Does anybody here have a Digital Radio? I know LiamK mentioned in another thread that he did. Also, which is the best one to get?

I am sick of listening to stations like Virgin with a crappy reception

Good point. I wouldn't mind a digital radio, but they are still fairly pricey. I often listen to FiveLive and Talksport when they chat about football, but the reception is appalling with a normal am radio. how much do these DAB doo-dahs cost?

I have a digital radio called 'The Bug'.

We got it for my Dad for his birthday, but I've completely hijacked it.

The sound quality is excellent, and as you say, listening to Virgin on a standard radio is such a pain in the arse with all the AM screeches ruining the songs.

Although I like the sound quality and pre-programmed stations (no more playing around with the tuner scroller for ages) I don't like the actual digital radio at all.

The main multi-directional button on the front is a nuisance to use and the screen display is shit. There's so few pixels on the screen and underneath where it shows which station you're listening to there's another line that normally tells you which radio show you're listening to 'Kelly drives you home' 'Chris Moyles Breakfast Show' etc... and then it shows you the song currently playing. But the radio stations chose to fill that field with so much rubbish, plugs for the website, the radio x stations top 5 singles, the telephone request line number etc... that you have to wait ages to see what song is actually playing, by which time it could've ended and you'll have to wait until you hear it again before you know.

They are really pricey though, I think my one cost £150 and I don't like it at all! There are a few on the market for about £60-80 which isn't too bank-breaking. But avoid 'The Bug' because it really is bad, if it was actually my present I would've taken it back ages ago!

Cheers for the info

I've been looking at this Hitachi digital radio hi-fi

http://www.radio-now.co.uk/hitachi_AX68D_large.jpg

It costs £199.99 but it also has a CD player, the only drawback is that doesn't appear to have a headphone socket

That looks pretty nice. Not a bad price considering its more like a proper stereo system. But, i would say never by anything like this without listening to the sound quality first. Some of those mini hi-fis sound really shitty because often the speakers supplied are toss.

DAB Hifi's are a good choice if you're looking to replace your old system, which it seems you're trying to do. I've only got a digital radio that sits next to the computer, no CD player or nothing, because when I'm at the computer is the only time I listen to the radio. I still use my non-digital Hifi for CDs etc..

Yeah I am wanting to replace my old hi-fi as i've had it for a while now, the most I that am prepared to pay would probably be £199.99, I should be able to pick up a good one for that price.

One of the advantages of digital radio is the amount of stations, according to http://www.ukdigitalradio.com/coverage/search/postcode.asp i'll be able to recieve about 37 stations, although I more than likely won't listen to quite a few of them it's still handy

Have you not got cable, I'd hazard a guess there'll all the channels you'll get, just scroll through them on your TV and see which ones you'd actually listen too !

I finally bought a DAB Hi-Fi for £149, it's the one currently being advertised by Currys on TV.

http://www.radio-now.co.uk/hitachi_AX68D_large.jpg

I've got 47 stations programmed in, the main stations I listen to are:

Virgin
TalkSport
Five Live
Arrow
Planet rock
6 Music
XFM
Century

The only slight problem is that I can't recieve all the stations at certain times, stations such as Kerrang or Magic are only available at night.

I agree that is a nuisance, it happens the most on Virgin, although the info about the song usually shows up eventually.

Overall though, i would definitely recommend it.

I have one but its a really bricky ugly design. However the coller newer designs look great and i can assure you the reception is fantastic very clear and the radio is very easy to use. Shame mine has got a gigantic aerial.

Yeah, they are so much more depressing with crystal-clear sound quality!
