With the approval of "mr. Administrator" Zygalski, Ill start this thread here for everything rugby. Whether it's union or league you're into, talk about it here.

So to start this thread off, why don't we all say who our top five teams in the world are?

1. New Zealand
2. Australia
3. England
4. France
5. South Africa
6. Ireland
7. Wales
9. Scotland

New Zealand are the top team in the world just now in my opinion. The All Blacks showed twice a few weeks ago that they are a better side than their World Cup semi final showed. They completely destroyed and demoralised an admittedly slightly understrength England team and just this Saturday were able to beat the hard hitting Pacific Islanders.
They have the perfect combination of speed and power, with a super winger in Joe Rokocoko with 24 trys from 18 test matches and so many powerful players at their disposal. Tara Umagh, their skipper and outside centre, is regarded by many, including myself as the best centre in the world at this moment in time and with his partner, a youngster known as Daniel Carter, showing amazing ability and composure already, they look great favourites to have a very impressive midfield for many years to come.

I know they havent been doing well recently but they should be able to pull back together and get a good strong team!

Scotland just aren't good at any sports, and it'll take a long time, and a lot of money before we are. Losing Chris Paterson is a real setback, he was probably our best player, but he's just one of our losses, after the World Cup, Gregor Townsend and Kenny Logan retired from international rugby.
Scotland did fianlly show some positive signs against Australia, although we lost, we lost to a team that the very next week, beat England; the "World Champions" by 51-15.

I wouldnt go that far like we're ok at curling and the footballing future looks bright.
Do u know how the claymore's are doing?

wr50l
11-07-2004, 01:12
The claymores are (doing) shite. Last I checked, they were yet to win a game in their league.

Rangers_FC
11-07-2004, 02:10
Claymores are SHITE! FULL STOP!
Back 2 the rugby....
Not really into it, i think the aussies are the best and the english show off's will see the next time they play them and get hammered. They think they are so gr8 coz they won a world cup but they were so lucky and jammy it was unbelievable!! wales and ireland bothe have good players in thier teams whereas scotland dont and thats why we are so pish at the game.

By the way who is 8th in the list??

-=[101st]=-

1. New Zealand
2. Australia
3. England
4. South Africa
5. France
6. Ireland
7. Argentina
8. Wales

After that it is not really worth commenting on.. as the skill levels drop to amatuer ones.. undisciplined rugby...

who do people think are the best Forward and the best Back?? and i want a reason.. none of this "jonny, coz he kicked the winning goal!" i want a proper reason...

I will add mine soon.. but i want to wait to see what other people say...

wr50l

The best forward...Kevin Meealamu the All Blacks hooker, he is a real challenge for teams to bring down, and he's quite fast for a forward.

The best back....Tara Umagh the All Blacks' outside centre. He's fast, powerful, and he tackles hard. Their isn't a player better than him in my opinion.

Brendan Cannon, Serge Betsen, Robinson(All Blacks' lock forward) were contenders for the best forward.

Other great backs include Wallabies' centre Stirling Mortlock, All Blacks' winger Joe Rokocoko, English fullback Jason Robinson and his team mate Ben Cohen. As well as French trio Yannick Yauzion, Frederik Michalak and Nicholas Brusque.

well the result was 16 - 7, in a game that felt like it was played in the middle of a lake.. it was that wet.. i will post a little match report when i get a chance.. as well as the best forward and best back in the world at the moment

-=[101st]=-
19-07-2004, 07:04
okay initially i would like to appologize for being too lazy to write a match report..

okay.. one to best forward:

Richie McCaw...
What can i say?? his fitness is the first thing you notice about this lad he is at ever ruck, ever maul giving 110%, next thing you will notice almost everytime he makes a tackle more than 5 metres from the last ruck, he comes up with the ball. His ability to turnover oppostion ball is unmatched in international rugby. He support play is awesome...

Close 2nd: Chris Jack

Best Back:
Justin Marshall...
Every team needs a Justin Marshall, yesterday's bledisloe opitimised how much NZ value him, he manages to get man of the match in a game where forwards dominated, he really stood up and took the game by the scruff of the neck.. his darts from just around the side of the ruck are unmatched...

Best Back not reguarly playing International Rugby
Andrew Merhtens..
he the worlds best fly half, and will be until he retires don't gimme this jonny shit... and if you say spencer, i will be getting my pimp hand out.. he got selected for the all blacks on 45 minutes of rugby he played... that is it.. that is all he needs.. he can change opposition defensive patternsby just stepping onto the field... and he did that in the super 12 final...

france above the aussies??? hmm.. interesting decision.. i am not disageeing.. yet.. but can u post your reasoning.. like the strong points of each team.. and the weak points of each team.. and why you rate them higher than Australia.. because i think they are two of the more evenly matched team in international rugby at the moment...

New Zealand are in quite a bit of trouble for their game against South Africa this Saturday.

Gibbes, Robinson, McCaw and Dan Carter are all out, although they're is a chance that Dan Carter will recover from a virus in time. If he doesn't then he will be replaced at inside centre by Tuitopo(?).

Match Report:
From the outset everyone knew this game was not going to be like past encounters. South Africa took the lead in the 23rd second through Jean de Villiers when he capitalized on an All Black mistake. The Springboks come out with a similar defensive style to that employed successfully by the Wallabies in the 2003 Rugby World Cup Semi-final against the All Blacks. It involved their midfield defence rushing out of the line at the All Blacks 2nd receiver, trapping the 1st receiver and making him unable to spread it wide, unless he wanted to risk and intercept. It was extremely effective, it forced the All Blacks to play predominately a forward game that saw the speed men not able to get the ball in open spaces.

It also put extra pressure on All Black Fly Half Carlos Spencer, who does not function well in tight spaces, added together with the All Blacks preferred flat style of attack, saw Spencer have a nightmare of a game. He was put under pressure every time he touched the ball.

The Springboks managed to find holes in a normally water tight all black defence, that saw them go in three times before half-time. Most of them came from All Blacks errors, whether it was in attack or defence. This however did prove to be their last scoring play.

Although it looked liked a new Springbok team, with new game plans, they still had their most renown trait, disruptive and undisciplined defence. Every time New Zealand go a sniff of the try line, it resulted in Dan Carter slotting a penalty.

It finished with a climax that was warranted by such a close game, the game was decided just seconds before the hooter. After 15 phases on the South African line the All Blacks finally managed to crack it with South Africa not willing to give away a penalty this time, because the All Blacks were only 3 points behind them and a penalty would have meant that they would have walked away sharing the heavily sought after points. Carlos Spencer spotted space out wide after he beat Brent Russel with the pass it was all Doug Howlett who strolled over to put New Zealand 2 points in front with only seconds remaining. As Doug Howlett was getting to celebrate the try the hooter went off, to signal the end of the game. Spencer missed the conversion but it didn’t matter New Zealand with the perfect start to the Tri-Nations having now won 2 from 2.

Tri-Nations Table:
.........................P.... W....D....L....BP....Points... .+/-
New Zealand:.......2....2.....0... .0.....0........8.......11
South Africa:........1....0.....0... .1.....1........1.......-2
Australia:.............1....0. ....0....1.....0........0..... ..-9

P = Games Played
W = Games Won
D = Games Drawn
L = Games Lost
BP = How Many Bonus Points Earned
Points = How Many Points Earned
+/- = Points Scored Minus Points Conceeded

In an attempt to revive this thread.

British teams in action this weekend and next weekend.

This Saturday Scotland take on Australia at Murrayfield and the Welsh Dragons host Tri-Nations Champions South Africa.

Next week, England, under their new manager, take on Canada.

Predictions -

Scotland 13-29 Australia

Scotland'll give them a game, but the Wallabies will be far too strong for their Northern Hemisphere opponents.

Wales 14-23 Australia

As with Scotland Wales will play well and challenge the Tri-Nations winners, but will be outclassed eventually.

England 40-7 Canada

No real contest, even for an England team without new captain Jonny Wilkinson (shoulder injury).

Anyone else care to predict?

I for one cannot wait for the world cup. I reckon the Kiwis will choke again and it will go to the Springboks or the Wallabies if I had to back a nothern hemisphere team I'ld have to go with the french, if they can find the consistency that is.

It does seem as if the All Blacks have maybe peaked too soon, but I wouldnt put money on it tbh.

Their main challenge, imo, will be from South Africa, White has his timing running perfect and has put so much emphasis on the defensive line during the tri-nations that they will be better for it come September.

The group of death has to be Ireland, France and Argentina - win and you play Scotland in the next round, but come second and you face N.Z. in Cardiff.......

zeemeister
22-07-2007, 19:16
Holy crap that is a toughie the Argies have what it takes to go a long way too, a good solid pack and very innovative backline, the defence is lacking though and that seems to be the focus point for this world cup, but you can never really tell.

nikos24
29-07-2007, 22:45
The All Blacks' mighty team are un-matched these days.

I was hoping the Sprinboks and Derick Hougaard would come out as winners of the Tri-Nations but alas, that's something I can only dream about for now. It's been a long time too since they've won it.

zeemeister
29-07-2007, 23:19
Derrick Hougaard cant play under pressure so when the pack is getting nailed he folds. His place kicking was well below par too. He all but played himself out of the WC squad at the Tri-nations. The Springboks need a consistent fly half, Butch James and Andre Pretorius are not consistent enough like Dan Carter is for the All Blacks.
I think that will be our demise in France.

-=[101st]=-
02-08-2007, 11:14
I don't think we've peaked too early, we may not be playing our best rugby, but neither are the poms/french/aussies.

We've spent the last 3 years rotating players, and now it's time to work on Combo's. Sure the Tri Nations didnt go as I personally would have liked, but we're far from peaking.

I'm worried about the Irish + South Africa (though they never travel well), the French havent shown the form that won them the Six Nations.

Also watch the Argies, but i don't think they'll progress in their pool, almost any other pool, they'd be the 2nd placed team. I think what the IRB want as the final (highest northern hemisphere team vs the highest southern hemisphere team) will happen first game into the 2nd around at cardiff. Ireland to top the group of death with France 2nd.

AgentZero
11-08-2007, 23:41

He cant tackle without shoulder charging.. he'll have to learn how to do that before he even thinks about being an all black

AgentZero

i think he has the goods. Perhaps not a 13 hed a be a great number 8

-=[101st]=-
02-08-2008, 10:31
Maybe.. he's kinda middle of the road.. he's really balanced.. but he either needs to bulk up.. or get faster...

And i dont know if he's agressive enough to be a forward...

dunno time will tell.. but he's definately not going to walk into an AB jumper..

and besides.. if he went for the $$.. he'll have to come back to NZ for his $NZ300k a year (which is unlikely seeing as he was crying over AU$400k a year) to be eligable

That was the best All Blacks Performance in years. We would have beaten anyone playing the way we played tonight.

I'm looking forward to the Brisbane game, it'll be a great game.

Also, i wonder if the Wallabies can travel under Deans. They have only won 1 of their last 23 games against the world's top teams on the road.

England's handling, passing and especially discipline around the ruck is embarasing at this level  We've been guilty of these continual unforced errors for a number of years & it never gets corrected. You compare to any other 'top' side and you'll see nowhere near as many silly penalties.

O'Gara was shocking wasn't he!? I don't think I've ever seen him so poor. In some respects it did the game a favour. If he'd got the first 9 it would likely have been over by half time.

O'gara had a right stinker but luckily it didnt cost us....As for Scotland they are always our bogey team and could cause an upset and ruin our chances of a Grand Slam.

Well I dont think that they find some form I think that England go back to the basics and it works for them in the big tournaments with everything going through the forwards and taking your penalties when they come.

Best of luck to ye though in the rest of the tournament.

I was with you up to the bold bit... France or Wales, yes. Ireland? Hmmmm. If you play anything like you did on Friday against Wales, they'll tear you a new one!!!

Wales have Italy next, then Ireland + France have England and Italy so are unfortunately looking the favourites to me.

Well we will play like France did against Wales, I was just saying that if Scotland beat us then I dont think we will win the Grand Slam but if we do beat Scotland then our momentum will take us past Wales in our final game and give us the grand slam.
We wont play like we did against England, that was our worst performance in a while and England defended well with a very high line and broke up everything with there constant penalties only for O'Gara to waste them, also the Ref should have done something earlier about the Penalties and if he had the game would have been more open and we would have beat England by more but thats Rugby for you and you play to your strenghts.

I hope you do as I'd rather the Irish won than the French. Problem is, I've checked my crystal bollocks and I just don't see it.

Well there are pumps and other equipment you can get for that sort of thing. :D

Wigan Warriors 12-19 St. Helens. Get in there! Pisses me off how Eddie Hemmings and Stevo shag every player because of there toughness. Wellens got banged on the last tackle of the game and all they said was "He got straight up, the toughness on these guys".

It was pretty impressive though mate. If a footballer had taken that whack he'd be down for minutes, Wellens was up before ten seconds.

Only saw the last 10 minutes as was watching City.

I aint disputing that mate, i agree they're tough men, far tougher than todays footballers but he's clearly just getting at football fans watching. It's clearly got to me .

Bratford beat Leeds last night :shocking:. Hull KR also beat Hull FC at the KC Stadium. Salford only just beat Warrington and closer to home, Leigh Centurions beat Widnes Vikings 10-8 .

bloody hell we thumped Souths good win, mon the raiders. If we somehow combine the atmosphere of Super League with the quality of NRL, then well have a great league on our hands. Need to get into some Guiness Premiership...
Also ive been hanging around and reliving 2007 by playing Ruggers 08..best rugby game by far, so much fun and exhilarating. Anyone got news on 2009?

Wilkinson had a nightmare. Very dodgy England team there.

Wilkinson did have some difficult kicks but he should be putting far more over and getting a lot closer with those he missed. That said though there are some concerns the roof made the ball behave oddly as both teams were missing so many kicks. Not sure I buy it but it will be interesting to see if this trend continues with other kickers in this stadium. A really poor performance but getting the result was important, we have two relatively easy games to get up to speed now. Drastic improvement needed.

Joel, rugby is great but it does need a certain level of intelligence to follow the rules. Football fans consider the offside rule complicated.

Now, I wouldn't say it is that hard to follow.

My dislike for it comes from actually playing it, rather than watching though.

I didn't expect a vintage performance against a competitive Argentina side. We got the win and now have to build for the next game.

The wallabies prefer playing FIFA as opposed to the rugby games out right now. Pretty miffed NZ/Fra are in the same group that QF in 2007 was amongst the most exciting games I've seen on telly.

What an incredible result for us today! Beat the wallabies 15-6. Our forwards kept up a great intensity throughout the match, and pretty much dominated the scrum every time (bar one occasion as far as I can recall).

Big thing now is to keep this up and top the group in order to face Wales/Samoa rather than SA. And then it would be England/France more than likely in the following round.

Great result for Ireland yesterday. England played better today but against a top side they will punish us easily with that amount of territory. Georgia have improved so much in recent years, a really solid performance. Gorgodze is an absolute beast.

Massive hit from Cian Healy.

Irish forwards were timewasting beyond belief, I felt some of the penalties from the scrum were well too soft considering it was slippery. but then Quade cooper played like a knob.

Our forwards fairly dominated around scrum time tbh. I think we got the pyschological edge from the very beginning and rolled with it. Australia were far too cocky going into the game on the back of a bad month for Irish rugby which was clearly a ridiculous attitude. We were always going to up our game for them, and considering how well Irish rugby has done both internationally and domestically in the last 4 years we always had the talent to do very well.

I think the final is a realistic shout for us this year. Although I can't see us beating the All Blacks. They are so good. Like the Barca of Rugby.

Australia, unsurprisingly, are not struggling in the same way against the USA... it's just not the same level.

bloody french played with a weakened team against the ABs, so theyll essentially play England in QF and either Ireland/Samoa for the semi. The other side is ridiculous Wallabies have to get past the boks, then ABs. I suppose when you have that path to the final it makes it more deserving.

chelsea11
25-09-2011, 20:13
It's looking great for us, and you lot (England). It's going to essentially be, the northern hemisphere going one route, and then the southern hemisphere and Argentina going the other. Meaning one big game against one of the Tri Nations teams will be all that's needed to win the WC.

Looking at it, it wasn't overly weakened, it just wasn't that good. The French just don't seem to have the same calibre of players they had five years ago.

To be fair Parra can play at 10, it's just that they don't have a world class fly half to put on. This is the main flaw in the recent teams, Trinh-Duc just doesn't cut it for me.

chelsea11
26-09-2011, 23:34
I just think they were playing for a loss there, so they could go down the 'easier' route to towards the final.

The French can be truly amazing on thier day, but that's just the thing, you never know when that could be.

Likewise for the Irish. Devastated we didn't put in a proper performance after all the hype of being potential winners. Fair dues to Wales though, they outplayed us and deserved it on the day.

France deserved to win. Flood and Wilkinson was a bad plan from the start, even the good aspects weren't utilised. The passing was poor, the decision making worse and the tackling (in the first half) worse still. The game plan, if there was one, was utterly wrong and played directly into French hands, literally.
