Facts
- FC Porto win the UEFA Cup and the European Champions Clubs Cup in sucessive seasons.
- Seventeen years after the great victory against Bayern Munchen (27-05-1987), goals by Carlos Alberto, Deco and Alenitchev wrote another proud chapter in our history.
- Carlos Alberto is the third youngest player ever to score in the final.
- Goalkeeper Vítor Baía is one of the only eleven players in football history who won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup (Barcelona), UEFA Cup and Champions League, i.e. the UEFA three trophys.
- Alenitchev scored both finals (UEFA Cup and Champions League)
- Ironically, FC Porto will return to Monaco's Stade Louis II for the UEFA Super Cup final against Valencia, next 27th August 2004.

I dont feel that porto will win big n europe this season, but i think they have a great chance in their own league, there are too many Big Clubs in europe to let the Portuguese win the cup again

I think they could do well again if they can find a good replacement for Carvalho because Diego is a brilliant replacement for Deco. But do you think the new managers tactics will be as good?

I have the same opinion as you Djz ! :D
They'll win everything domestic, but so long as the big guns show up in Europe this year, they won't get anything else.

they played pretty well against Liverpool and Galatasaray during their US tour, but I still don't think they could take on the strongest teams like Milan, Arsenal, Chelsea, or Real Madrid
You would have said that last year but look at what happened.
Plus in my opinion Porto are better than Arsenal Man Utd and Chelsea based on last season's performance.

Thats a big statement m8!!!
I bet there will be some people disagreeing

Nop.They won't win everything domestic.Last year they didn't and this year they won't I can guarantee it to you.Benfica is much stronger this year and Porto lost some of their most influential players. And Sporting as well as other Portuguese teams have a word to say also!
wI heard that Maniche could be going to Arsenal, I wonder who they could replace him with.

Jose Mourinho's replacement, Luigi Del Neri, has been sacked already.
That must be one of the quickest footballing hirings and firings of all time surely?
On yer bike (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/headlinenews?id=306348&cc=5739)
I saw that this morning. Apparently he took too long in Italy and his timekeeping was useless so they just gave him the sack.

Benefica are quite strong. They played very well against Real Madrid about a month ago. Tieing 2-2. SO I think that Porto are gonna have to up their A game.

I can't believe Inspector Clouseau has been sacked on the basis of a poor pre-season.
It's pre-season!!!
He hadn't even tucked into the main course yet. Talk about premature.

Mr. Del Neri in happier times
It wasnt just cause a poor pre season.. everyone hated his tactics and ideias. Porto's Board and the fans.. also his dismissed list included Derlei, McCarthy and others.. the man is a lunatic

How can you be of that opinion when most of Portos best players have been bought by other clubs?

Porto has now a better time than before, now they have much more velocity and technique, even losing Deco, Paulo Ferreira and Ricardo Carvalho, the defence is now a little bit lower without Carvalho but this is not important.
I think they will win the Portuguese league again and may be goes to the quarter’s finals in champion’s league.
Sorry the very, very bad English, I’m Portuguese as you can see and this is my first post in here! Sorry.

Ok m8 i agree fully with your points but i think the will miss carvalho badly in the chanpions league if they don t replace him with a top defender
are there any young promising defenders in portugal just now???

Just Miguel from Benfica and Miguel Garcia from Sporting, i think!
Porto always had a great school to create top defenders like Carvalho, Paulo Ferreira, Fernando Couto and the “Dragon” Jorge Costa.
But now… I don’t believe they could find some player like Carvalho, that in my opinion is the best defender of Europe now-a-days.

Paulo Ferreira came from Vitoria de Setúbal. And Miguel Garcia is not that good. Good Portuguese youngster defenders are João Paulo of União de Leiria, Bruno Alves(he was loaned to a foreign country I think) and Ricardo Costa from Porto, Amoreirinha from Benfica, Paíto from Sporting,Tiago Gomes from Benfica and no one else I think(maybe João Pereira since he can play as right midfielder or right defender, also from Benfica.)
Now, first 3 matches in the 04/05 Superliga and 3 draws for Porto. 3 draws in a row!!!Neat. Benfica has 3 matches and 3 wins. About Sporting I won't even comment...The good news are União de Leiria who drawed tonight at Estádio do Dragão 1-1 and are playing very well as well as Vitória de Setúbal who won against Sporting. Not the first time though, a few years ago Vitória won at Estádio de Alvalade.Simply hilarious.
So has you can see, this season Porto won't win many things.Too bad.
Maybe I'm jumping into a foregone conclusion since we're still in the beginning of the season. We'll see...
Sorry if I was going a bit off topic, in fact why not name this thread the Superliga thread from now on?
Ah! Porto lost again...Like I said this year they won't win much things, even though it's the beginning of the season and they did not play that bad against Chelsea. In addition I think the loss of R.Carvalho to Chelsea was crucial to Porto. That Pepe hasn't got the quality to play for Porto, they should've bought an excellent replacement but no....
I thought Porto weren't too bad actually, they just didn't create anywhere neaer enough chances to worry the Chelsea defence.
Diego looks very special. He was all over the place and everything went through him, just Porto lacked real quality up front to combine with his work in the midfield.
"We've got your manager...." :)
Lol. Yeah, Porto weren't that bad but their defence is awful without R.Carvalho.Also when McCarthy came in, Porto created some chances so I think that their defence was worst than their attack in this match. I don't know why Fernandez doesn't use McCarthy more often...it's a bit stupid....but I hope it continues like this since I support Benfica. :D
erm......
"We've got your long-haired, goal scoring mid-field-err" ?
I wanted to see more of Carlos Alberto as well, didn't think much of Derlei or Luis Fabiano. Helder Postiga, do me a favour!

Diego was the star of the side, I always rated him highly
Lol LiamK. By the way, I heard that Chelsea supporters have a song/chant for Tiago...Is it true?If it is, could you tell me how it goes?If you know it of course....
Porto should play with Diego, Carlos Alberto and Quaresma behind McCarthy and with Maniche and Costinha has defensive midfielders. That Derlei simply hasn't what it takes to play for Porto. And this comes from a Benfica supporter!
Tiago, woah oh oh oh oh
He comes from Portugal
He hates the Arsenal (repeat until bored)
It's a take on Arsenal's 'Vieira' song, to the tune of that Volare classical song.
Did Tiago have a song at Benfica?
No, no he didn't. Unfortunately, chants for players aren't a tradition in Benfica. I think Simão had one and also Roger. Apart from them no other Benfica player had a chant.
Damn. Porto today was a bit lucky...If it wasn't for that sending off...Belenenses was playing very well. But Porto deserved to win and I still don't know why does Derlei play instead of Carlos Alberto.Thank god!
And Benfica....now that was class!Guimarães played to draw which was disgusting and that referee shouldn't be refereeing in the Superliga. The portuguese small clubs need a new mentality, they shouldn't play to draw, they should take the examples of Vitoria de Setubal, Belenenses, Maritimo and Boavista who play to win...
2-1 Simão and Geovanni scored!
By the way, I forgot to mention, if you haven't seen Manuel Fernandes play you are missing one of the most promising midfielder youngsters in the world! Last year he came from the youth academy to the Benfica first team with just 17 years of age. Last night he was the man of the match for the second time since he played for Benfica's first team. He's just 18 now!!He's class...in a few years he'll be better than Tiago. No doubt about that. His performances are always brilliant! What a player! My god...At least I'm not going mental about Cristiano Ronaldo..LOL :p

Anyone know if Bruno Gama is still at Porto?
I thought he played for Porto B nowadays?
Porto were real bad last night.. Lucho looks very bright. Quaresma is also a great addition. But last night, they suffered a lot. For me, i think they should change Vitor Baia, who is their reserve keeper? They could even try to get Ricardo, from Sporting.. Possible..

Porto have shoked me now, as teh group was drawn i would have said it would be between us and Porto for the 2nd spot in the group, but now it looks more likely to be between us and Bratislava, their next two games against Inter i reckon the'l lose which will probably put them out of europe completely since they will have played 4 games and lost 4. We'll just have to see then.
Anyone see Quaresma's cross for the first goal? Pure class
Victor Baia looks very poor from last night and against Rangers.

Now that's what you call a cross!
Rangers Fureva, I agree, the race looked very much between Rangers and Porto for second spot and Porto probably would have the better odds, with losing there first 2 games, then back to back against Inter, I think the maximum of points they can get this season is 6 if the beat us at home and beat Artmedia Bratislava away, very much I think there out of it and I have to say Bratislava may have done us a favour, but I am getting more worried about their ability.

Aye, well hopefully we can win our home matches and that will give us passage through to the last 16 as we only really need about 9 points to advance.
Vitor Baia has been showing his age lately..Quaresma's cross was magical. I also believed Porto were the main contenders against Rangers for the second spot, but it looks to be Artmedia now. Although, we should not write Porto off just yet. Last season, they also had started off real bad, but at the end of the group stages, they qualified in a group that contained PSG and Chelsea. But this may be a bit different, Inter will be all class against Porto in both games, atleast i think so.

Diegos goal was cool. But full credit to Artmedia for battling back and not dropping the head.
Ricardo from Sporting? are you nuts? you guys got a nice impression from Ricardo in Euro i guess but he's really bad
Baia's reserve is Helton (a lot better than Baia) but since Baia has a strong influence in Porto...sigh
And do you really think Sporting would sell a player to a rival?
(And a year later what did Porto win last season?) :D

So Porto has sold Bosingwa off to Chelsea and it looks as though Quaresma is set to depart as well. Should be very interesting to see who they pull in this season to replace them.
Apparently Porto has players of high caliber prepared to step up to the challenge, but they are also quite young.
After another Championship season, there is no doubt they will have the cash to bring in a quality player or two, but only from around the league. :)
Have to love how Porto picks up these players cheap and then turns them around for record profits.
They will probably buy our João Pereira to replace Bosingwa. If he leaves, we're totally screwed :(
