Razor the IT I did the exact same thing: Couldn't be bothered to try with the coursework and got a C/D (The practicals were very good it was the write ups that were lacking :D) However I must have aced the exam as I got an A overall and the coursework was 60%.

Yes, but we're talking about averages, here. The average pass rate is way higher than it was 10 years ago. The % amount of people getting the top grades A*-C, is also increasing practically every year.
We've established that the human brain can't be evolving that quickly, so that leaves 4 main options.
1) The teachers are teaching better; ie practically telling the students what to expect during the final exam, not teaching around the actual exam questions, as they used to.
2) The students are trying harder across the board. I actually think this is least likely. You'll always have people who will try harder than others - you'll always have people who don't give a shit about academia. Remember the 80's? Everything was about outdoing everyone else, I'm sure parents were just as pushy then as they are now with there kids. I was there!
3) The exams are easier to pass & easier to achieve higher grades in. This, along with no.1 is the most likely reason for me. The government says it wants over 50% to go into higher education. Hey presto - all of a sudden it looks like it's gonna happen. A lot of the University staff ain't too chuffed. The increase in funding from Government isn't going to cover the massive increase in places at most Uni's.
4) More emphasis on coursework. It makes up much of the final mark these days. Wouldn't want our poor liddle kiddie-widdies having too much pressure of a final exam making, say 80% of the final mark, would we?
If you can do the research in your own time, copy stuff from the Net or whatever & change it slightly, then it's clearly way easier than coughing up the goods in a final written examination.

I use the internet mostly for coursework. I only used it for homework on a few occasions last year whereas for coursework I used it alot so as to have as much information as I could.

Stevie, I think the point about coursework is a bit off the mark, most of my exams carried about 60% on the final exam and I think Maths was 75% on the final exam. Plus, subjects like English still need ability to pass, not just a computer (well at least if you do the right thing and hand in your OWN work) As for the other points, yeah maybe your right.
