The site is Ashburton Grove, but Emirates are the sponsors of the stadium. It's a bit like Bolton's stadium being called the Reebok Stadium.

I'm not that keen on the name yet, but it might grow on me.

I really don't like that, doesn't matter as I'm still going to call it Ashburton Grove, anyway.

same here, i doubt many Arsenal fans will be calling it the Emirates stadium (I certainly hope not anyway), it just doesn't sound right. 'Right mate, im off down the Emirates'
It doesn't overly matter though IMO, they are providing us with huge sums of money and the stadium will still be great, more worrying i think is the fact we will have Fly Emirates as our shirt sponsor from 2006/7 until 2114! As the emirates logo is blue i don't see any hints of blue working on the Arsenal shirt. Just have to wait and see though, i haven't been disapponted by the quality of Arsenal's shirts in a long, long time so hopefully that'll continue.

Isn't it white on Chelsea's home kit though? They'll probably just put a white logo on our home, and probably white on our away kit as well, depending on it's color.

does that mean that Emirates r financing the building of the new stadium? or are they just sponsors? its sort of confusing, because they got their name on it, which means they own it? but, i they own it, then how is it a 15 yr contract only? so after 15 yrs the Stadium name changes? that would be weird...

Thierry14
05-10-2004, 16:09
They don't own the stadium. Arsenal do, It is called 'The Emirates Stadium' for the next 15 years.
The shirt sponsor is a seperate deal for 5 yeras starting in the 2006/07 season(the first of the new stadium)
Next year(2005/06) we will still be O2.

Fly Emirates and Chelsea agreed to break their ties, so Chelsea can get a bigger deal and Emirates can pump more money into Advertsing with Arsenal...

It's basically just advertising for Emirates, their putting their name on the stadium and paying Arsenal 100 million over the next 15 years for it. Arsenal still own the stadium.

oh ok thx for clearing things up. Eventhough i live in the Emirates (the country not the plane  ), they didn't provide us with any information whatsoever about this.

I really don't like the idea of sponsoring stadiums, although Emirates Stadium sounds infinite times better than the Nike Arena, especially as we were supposed to pronounce it yank (Nike-eeeeeeeee).

And when that 15 years is up - what happens then? The name of the stadium is changed again to the name of the highest bidder?

Sorry, stadium sponsoring is a horrible idea. Especially for a big club like Arsenal, are any other big European clubs changing the name of their stadium according to sponsors. Big clubs and good stadiums aren't sold out to coroprate companies (Bernabeau, Nou Camp, Old Trafford, San Siro etc...) leave that to Bolton.

Thats thrue Liam, I don't like to agree with you, haha. But It's true big teams shouldn't do this. Apparently we needed to. But we have been alright without Hundreds-of-millions in the bank before.
However, Ajax' stadium is called the 'Sony Amsterdam ArenA' and PSV's is called the 'Phillipstadion' and I believe PSV means 'Phillips Something V'...
One more, FC Bayern Munchen's new stadium is the 'Allianz Airlines Arena'...

Yeah selling the name of the stadium sucks but it's either that or no stadium at all and I know what I'd prefer.

can't arsenal just keep ashborton grove it has a good ring to it and makes sence when the finally move and yes 50! fly Emirates is the sponsor of chelsea but not for long that deal run's out at the end of the season when Abramivich will proably stick one of his companys on the chelsea shirt form next season

O hate the new name of arsenal's ground it's awful

Yea i know changing stadium names sounds wrong to me, specially that after 15 yrs the name would change again. Why can't hey just sponsor Arsenal without changing the Stadium's name? Sounds dumb to me. They can have their name written all over the walls and belongings of the club, if they're looking for more customers and fame, without the need of changing the Stadium name.

The fans are gonna decide the stadium name anyway, AFC can tell us what to call it but I think that if everyone wants to call it Ashburton Grove then they will(I haowever hate that name as for its WAY too long and I really don't want to call it the Grove or Ashburton) I would have prefered it be called Highbury, and even it is a new stadium how many stadiums look the same today compared to 40 years ago? Or maybe Wengerland or something I dunno....Although the amount of money we get for it suprises and pleases me coz this damn thing is costinbg us soooo much. Besides its only for 15 years anyway, I'll prolly be dead by then so I don't care.

In 6 years time you wont think twice about calling it Emirates Stadium and say, "That sounds wierd".

Just like when they change the name of it again in 15 years, you will dislike it, then grow to like it.

Money makes the world go round, we all know that.

The new name for the stadium is just plain crap its just so boring. I like stadiums to have a original name like Highbury,Old trafford and Anfield, not some advertising scheme so that company will get richer. I suppose that the money will be of great use in the summer :D

Yeah the name just doesn't sound right, weren't they saying it was going to be named after Wenger at some point? Anyhoo I agree with Liam on the fact that Stadium Sponsering is crap and should not exist, ok the Reebok stadium was succesful but I just can't see it happening with Arsenal...
I picked out a picture, and it could well look ok

At least away days to Arsenal will be a little more exciting now, a good enclosed stadium always adds to the atmosphere....then again, it is Arsenal ;)

Anyone know about ticket prices? As there's a bigger capacity are there going to be cheaper tickets? Or are they going to Chelsea style it and charge even more, maximising profits while excluding real fans who aren't managing directors?

God I hope they put the ticket prices down! I might actually be able to go and see a match..

They're gonna keep ticket prices the same.

I like Emirates though, I suspect Peter Hill Wood chose an Arabian company to annoy the Spurs Semitic ties!!!

Or just for the money!!!

I would have to agree with LiamK, the atmosphere at Arsenal is absolutely terrible.

Ah well, it's 3 years until I am off the season ticket waiting list, and then the roof of the Emirates Stadium will be raised.

LiamK
06-10-2004, 16:50
It used to be just Chelsea's ticket prices that were extortionate, now Arsenal and Tottenham have equalled the extortionate figures so much that £45-50 is now considered a reasonable ticket price. The most expensive seats at Chelsea are the West Upper (upper tier, stand opposite the dugout), at £55. I'd imagine the equivalent seats at Emirates Stadium would probably be closer to £60.

But I hope that's not the case, because then Chelsea would have another reason to hitch the prices up to compete with Arsenal.

Right, I'm off to scratch the Emirates logo off my Chelsea shirt :)

And should I ever go to the Middle East, if Emirates Airlines thinks they've got my custom they've got another thing coming.

Time to get out the old Autoglass and Coors shirts!

Arsenal play the best football in the Premiership. And along with Chelsea are the best team in England; so it's fair to say they can charge what they wish to.

No sponsor decided yet.

"...as the club embarks on a new global era, is a consumer brand. Ideally it will be an active marketing partner with similar strategic ambitions for the UK, North America and Asia, regions where we anticipate major opportunities for extensive growth in the Chelsea fanbase."

Bound to be Sony or something like that.

Just because a team is successful does not mean they can charge whatever they want for tickets. I'd imagine part of the reason Highbury is as quiet as it is, is because overpricing tickets has driven out all the passionate working class supporters, who are usually the ones standing and singing and creating the atmosphere and helping the team. Besides, all clubs have a duty to ensure fans from the next generation, how are they going to attract the season ticket holders of the future when most kids can't afford the train fare to London, let alone a ticket to a game.

That's how a business works. If your product is in demand, be it in this case, the Arsenal football team, you can charge the prices you wish, because people will still watch them. It's a basic business strategy.

And people like myself, who are 16, can easily afford a season ticket. I worked this summer after my GCSE's and made close to £1000. If you care that much for your team, you would sacrifice a few weekends of drunkeness in order to allow yourself to be able to finance going to Highbury.

If you go to Highbury, you will realise many rich people go there and hence the atmosphere is poor, or at least I think so. And as long as these people are willing to pay the amount asked of them, nothing will change that.

Ask yourself why Man United used to bring out three football kits a season. The answer was:

because people would buy them simply because of their success.

That's fine, if you want Arsenal Football Club to turn into an pastime, where few fans have any real passion for the club but go there during their corporate lunches for some sandwiches and champagne with some light entertainment in the form of a football game.

All football clubs have a duty to attract young supporters, that's how football clubs stay in business. You attract the supporters of tomorrow by giving them tastes of real football, kids whose parents can't afford to take them to Old Trafford, Highbury, Stamford Bridge will not have the same passion the club that people who can and do go regularly can.

Ah, like Old Trafford then?

It's an unavoidable situation. Arsenal are becoming the next best place to dine on a Saturday afternoon. How can you avoid that? You can't.

Nowadays, watching teams on the television is more than enough for some people. And my passion for Arsenal is immense, despite the fact I can rarely go.
