If you change stats for a player and go into ML mode, his stats will be the same as they were on the default option file. The appearance will be as you put it, but the attributes (apart from special stars I think) will return to default. I don't know why this is, but I tried to buy my Dream team player for Barca and his stats were from the keeper I'd replaced with my player. Pants.

If this isn't the case for everyone, I've been ripped.

I'm afraid it is the case mate. I think the fact players can be improved during the ML, Konami thought whats the point of making stats editable for it.

It's good in a way, but I used to have me and my mates playing for our fave clubs, and I can't do it now as it causes duplicate players if I buy an edit player version of myself. etc. you know what I mean
For now we have just banned each other from playing for clubs and limited it to using our own created payers in our ML teams. I think it'll just have to do, it makes it fairer using clubs aswell.
Also it means that I don't have to keep updating players stats, which saves a lot of work.
So I'll just be leaving my option file near default (apart from kits and stuff)
