Hey guys

I was going to get a mp3 player for christmas frm argos and its only E50
and i thought it would be a good bargain :D it is a alba and it has 64Mb space and it says it includes a usb cable but it doesnt include software

was i right in thinking that you can put your mp3 files from your pc onto a mp3 player ? How?

Surely you need software to export it and stuff

What do i do?

Ok, I've had my MP3 player for a year or so now, and it's very simple. You install a driver that comes with the MP3 player enabling you to put music onto it. It is usually compatible with both MP3 and WMA files. WMA being Windows media audio, meaning that you can copy music onto your pc, then transfer it onto your MP3 player. MP3 just means downloads off the internet.
My memory is 256mb, but I haven't got round to filling it up yet. Hope this helps a tad.

64 megs sounds a bit small, I'd prefer something bigger, I've got gigs worth of ripped cds on my pc. I was thinking about an mp3 playr for crimbo, but I wouldn't mind a digital camera, anyone know anything about them ? I don't want a real professional one, just the best mid-range if anyone knows ? I want photo's that are good enough to manipulate with graphics packages.

Hmmm, I might be able to find you one, what price range were you thinking - £100 - £150?

64 mb is poor really. I was going to suggest getting the pocki mp3 player which I bought for £29.99 from ebuyer and holds 128 mb which is ok... got to the site and its gone up to £72.99 and its completely out of stock. I'm guessing that this years big christmas present is gonna be mp3 players. Look around tho, £50 is poor for 64 mb.

64mb is nothing. My brother wants this 128mb one for christmas and that's £50.

Just get a 20MB one or something like that, it's far better value for money, and it'll last you properly.

I'm purchasing a Creative Zen Touch for christmas, 20GB, 24 hour battery life and £179.99, thank you very much.

£50 for a 64mb MP3 player is atrocious. Go for something akin to this (http://www.goaudio.co.uk/14715).

What to look for:
- 3-5 megapixels, there's no point going above that.
- Atleast 3x optical zoom.
- Try to get one that takes SD cards.
- Canon lenses are the best.

If I was to recommend a camera go for a Canon Powershot 85, you're looking at £160-ish for one of those, or if you want better than that go for the Canon IXUS 40 which would be £250-ish.

Good Luck.

The "what to look for" I knew, but thanks. Its just when you look around(especially on the net) it's all propoganda man, ie. You never know whether the company has paid for their "good" review, so names of good cameras is what I'm looking for. I'll have a look at Canon cameras now.

Oh yes, I've just got my Creative Zen Touch and I must say it is a beautiful thing to behold and to actually hold! Though unfortunately it shall not accompany me on the trip to work as it needs to charge for four hours before using it for the first time.

I know a thing or too about mp3 players!! Ive had 3 in the past and currently own an ipod.
With this 'great ipod' i get to:
*Charge it for 4/5 hours and then i have the pleasure of listening to it for 1 hour! :|
*See every ipod accessory brake, speakers from the bottom teared away... usb adabter (plastic thing fallen off) Preety strange for somethin which costs soo much to bee so fragile. Esp when it aint been used much. Also the ipod gets scratched VERY easily.

Complete waste of money, ive had it almost 2 yrs and for about a yr and a 1/2 its been shit!!!
Good sound but not worth the money. Just MY personl experience for those who are lookin into gettin an ipod.

I too am lookin into gettin a new mp3 player, altho having 15g was nice, i still couldnt store ALL the songs from my pc, yet, i thought why do i wanna store ALL my songs on there
My playlists consist from 40 to 100 songs.
Soo this year im going for an 512mg (50-100 songs varies from quality) and it will take batteries. It may not be as flashy, people may not say oooooooow or wow, but atleast i'll be bloody happy!!

O and another thing, if u do get an ipod and be 1'a the unfortunate one's like me to get a faulty one, whatever you do, DO NOT ORDER IT FROM apple.com. At the time i purchased mine, they didnt sell them in stores, neither did they have a good customer service as I emailed them in several ocassions, and not once did they reply back...

Sorry to hear of your troubles.

I currently have a Zen Touch, I originally had a Creative Zen Jukebox but it died on me, it still played music ok but the screen remained blank.

I've had no complaints about the Zen Touch so far, the scroll bar works really well and it didn't take long to get used to the player.

You have something special there, 'Zen touch' is a grade A for me... My cousin has one, n i rate them highly. Compact & reliable! Also better sound qual then apples ipod. I like the style of the Creatives Zen Micro, n MAY purchase one. Funny how mp3 players have developed over the last 2 yrs...

Altho the sony vaio is quite big, its still something flashy that most wont have regardless off hateing mp3 players with eternal batteries, I'd still think about buying it.
Just luv the style off that and after all its Sony. http://reviews-zdnet.com.com/Sony_VAIO_Pocket_Digital_Music _Player___VGF_AP1L/4505-6490_16-31107442.html

Probably a good thing, as all that metal music may provoke a murderous rampage on your part and cause the death of all the other commuters on the train with you.

Best leave it at home or fill it with Lennon I say.

It's not me buying it, im getting it for Christmas, anyway, im happy with it, as i not a massive music fan! thats partly why i didnt want an IPOD 40GB one, as i would never have that amount of songs to fit in it! So 1000 is more then enough!

I've never been interested in a mp3 player before, though getting sick of toting a CD player and CD case around, have decided to purchase one. Since I have no knowledge, could someone recommend me which one to purchase out of these:

Creative Zen Micro 5 GB (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00067TTZO/qid=1103951194/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1_etk-electronics/103-0814617-6759838?v=glance&s=electronics&n=172282)

Creative Zen Touch 20 GB (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00028DJTY/ref=pd_ecc_rvi_1/103-0814617-6759838)

Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra 30 GB (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002BRMNA/ref=pd_ecc_rvi_3/103-0814617-6759838)

I've narrowed it down to those four, I want one that it reliable, I don't plan to be jogging with it, just walking, and I have a rather large music collection and I would like to keep most of it, though I'd be willing to compromise.

Thanks.

I've had a Creative NOMAD Jukebox 3 (20GB) which I've had for two years and is still going strong. If I ever had to change, I'd go for a Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra which is similar in features and much smaller. I tend to go for the player which will give the best sound quality - and has sound features i.e. EAX. The menus don't bother me too much - the Jukebox 3 menus aren't considered nice but I find them easy to use.

Gary G
25-12-2004, 12:59
There isn't a great deal of difference between the Zen Xtra and the Zen Touch apart from the size, they are both top-notch players.

The only reason I got the Zen Touch because my Zen Xtra was faulty, and I couldn't get a replacement as the 40gb Zen Xtra had been discontinued. Whichever player you choose you won't be disappointed.

Got the Powershot A85 for £160 today with a free case, I found it by luck in this little computershop everywhere else it was £200+ in sale, I don't know where you were getting the pricing from ?(probably from the web but I couldn't be arsed with the hassle) It's a sweet camera, I'm really impressed with the image quality, the manual controls, zoom and the little movies you can do are good quality, going round to my girlfriends tomorrow might try out the movie feature, if you know what I mean (nudge, nudge, put it up on the web, wink, wink.)

Sorry for the revival of an old thread but my Zen Xtra stopped charging the other week, so I've had to buy a new mp3 player.

I originally was going just to get a Zen Touch, but this caught my eye

http://www.generationmp3.com/images/News/hd5%202.JPG

It's absolutely tiny for a 20GB and can last for 40 hours from a single charge. Needless to say, once I heard that it was sold. Currently going through the arduous task of putting all my music on there from CDs/Zen Xtra/computer but I tested it a while ago with just 30 or so albums on there and the menu is as good as the Creatives and the sound quality is even better. Also has the unique (but novelty) advantage of a screen that senses whether it is being held horizontally or vertically and can adjust itself accordingly.

I'm on my 3rd mp3 player. The first being a 5gb zen micro which froze after a month and no matter what i done it woudn't play any music. The 2nd was a Philips GoAudio, which i had for 2 days and the problem this time was that the software was rubbish and took ages to transfer my music onto the player(unless i upgrade and download new software for £20). I've now ecided to play it safe and get an iPod mini(6gb), which is great. It has the best sound quality and the 'click wheel' is easy to use. However, Zen is the easiest and quickest way of transfering music to your mp3 player - drag and drop - but iPod is quite quick too. The iPod is the best out of the lot, but the most expensive.

Sony vaio pocket (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9k dWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=76264&_LOC=UK)

Seems alright for a 40g mp3, plus do ipods support ATRAC files ?

LiamK
21-07-2005, 01:09
I'd not seen that before, but that looks good. 40GB, 20 hour battery, LCD display and supports ATRAC files.

Reminds me of the Cowon iAudio (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0001ZN83U/qid=1121902824/sr=8-7/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i7_xgl/026-6963856-9601220) - but better value.

The battery is built in though, which is sometimes a problem, and as with all earphones that come with mp3 players, you should throw them away immediately and buy some half-decent ones.

The software you'll use will be Sony SonicStage (the same software as I use for the HD5) which is pretty shit, Sony also make it so that there can be no other alternative softwares to be used - which is pretty inconsiderate when you consider how bad it is in comparison to Creative MediaSource or iTunes.

Gary G
21-07-2005, 01:28
I remember using SonicStage, as before I bought an MP3 player I had a Sony Net MD Minidisc player, I don't really recall having too many problems with it, although at the time I didn't know of any other software that could do the same job.

I notice the iRiver was mentioned before, I actually owned one of these a few weeks ago, albeit very briefly, as my Zen Touch became unusable due to debris gathering underneath the buttons, meaning certain buttons such as skip track and play/pause were rendered useless.

Having become accustomed to the Zen Touch, and previously the Zen Xtra, I found the iRiver overly complicated, it took a while to get used to the navigation and i realised i didn't really require a player with so many options (Music, text files, photos). The multicolour screen was impressive but I prefer the Zen Touch layout, it's simple but effective. My opinions will obviously differ from someone who doesn't just want to play music, but like I said above I didn't really use all of the options available. Another point when discussing the iRiver is that memory space is took up by various sources and not just MP3's, meaning I might not have been able to fit as much music on it as I would have liked. The iRiver is a fantastic piece of kit if you're after a multi-functional, colour-screen media player, but it just wasn't for me.

So it's back to the dependable Zen Touch for me, although having seen Liam's new player i'm not sure I made the right decision, although I didn't see that particular MP3 player when I was in Currys, as I had to pick a replacement from there which kind of limited my choice.

LiamK
21-07-2005, 01:44
One disadvantage of the HD5 is that there's no scroll device. If you know what I mean.

The iPod has the touch wheel, Zen Xtra the plastic wheel down the side and the Zen Touch has the touch pad on the front, the HD5 only has buttons - which can be irritating because when you've got entire music collections on your mp3 player scrolling is something you need to do a lot of, and it's just easier with a touch-sensative device like you find in the iPod and the Zen Touch.

Yeah I see how that would be a problem, generally when i'm using my player and want to find a particular track i'll scroll though all the tracks, I find this makes locating individual tracks easier when I have the player on random setting. The scroll function makes finding tracks easier.

It took a while to get used to the touchpad, but I soon got the hang of it, the sensitivity of the touchpad can be altered, this helps alot as upon first use of the player the touchpad can seem rather too sensitive.

The only slight problem with the Zen Touch is that it occasionally crashes, this can become annoying as if I want reset the player i need to find a pin or something similar. The reset button is located on the bottom left corner of the player, as you can see in the photo above.

That happened occasionally on the Zen Xtra as well, I always used to just take the battery out, I take it the battery isn't removable on the Zen Touch?

That was another irritating thing about the Zen Xtra, that flimsy plastic cover just wouldn't stay on. It would just pop up occasionally of its own accord until you couldn't place it down on a flat surface or softly touch the cover without it popping off. In the end I had to stick sellotape around it

Aye, bringing back memories there like, the cover on the Zen Xtra used to piss me off no end, eventually the cover bent slightly aswell, which made it nigh on impossible to place the cover back on the player. I could barely listen to it when it was in my pocket without the cover popping off.

The battery on the Zen touch can only be removed by unscrewing the back of the player, this is a good thing when you take into account the problems with the removable battery on the Zen Xtra, but as you mention it is also a problem when the player crashes, although not a problem that can't be worked round.

This seems to be a common problem with big memory Mp3's. My iPod seems to crash just random, it can happen anytime, but luckily it's pretty rare. Just hope they can fix this to following models, as it is very annoying.

Otherwise I've been very happy with my iPod. It's very quick and easy to use thanks to the touchwheel the menus which are both easy and fast to use. Also the iTunes program is great, to me it's the best music player I've ever used. I can recommend it to anyone who's about to buy a Mp3 player, but as I haven't had any other player in a long term use, I can't really compare iPod to other players.

Right, getting myself a proper MP3 player! Need some help deciding. Sorry for bringing back an old thread, just thought it'd be better than creating a new one...

Anyway, can anybody tell me if this is a decent MP3 player? I mean does it crash, etc, etc...

Got a 1GB player for 90 euro's 4 months ago, which isnt bad although I had money for an Ipod, but maybe I wanted to save some for other things.
My earphones are now broke, and only by twisting the wires in such a way you'll be able to use them.

Imagine someone in the train with his hands holding those wires in a strange way.

Wouldn't touch an iPod. Always go with Creative as I'm used to the functionality of their players and despite what people say, they're not difficult to navigate.

Creative zen xtra 60 GB. Mine can hold 16000 trax. I know it seems a lot but at the mo ive only got 3000+ on the Zen. I have listened to the Ipod and im not impressed. I think the sound quality is not as good as the creative. But thats my opinion tho. The good thing about the bigger memory is that you dont have to worry about deleting old tracks to make way for newer songs.Believe me, if you only had 100 songs on yor jukebox u would soon get bored with them. Honestly, if you want to buy a jukebox its best if you know someone who has one so u can listen before you buy, ppl have different views and tastes. You can also change the audio sound on the Zen as well, ie garage, jazz club, cathedral, bathroom just to give it different sound. Also it has another function where you can slow the song down without distortion or speed up. I dont know if the other jukeboxes do the same.

The Zen Sleek is the MP3 player I want but won't buy because a) I don't want to spend that much money at the moment and b) my current Zen Touch is working perfectly.

The Sony one does look excellent though. I wouldn't expect there to be much between them, all I know is that the sound quality on all three Creative MP3 players I've had was always excellent, something which I keep hearing can't be said about the iPod, though earphones also having a significant bearing on that.

Zen everytime mate. Must admit the sony is nice. When i got my Creative i think the Ipod was the only other option a couple of years ago. Now theres so much competition these days ppl are spoilt for choice and they are a lot cheaper.

I'm on my 3rd mp3 player now - the iPod mini.

The 1st one I had was a Zen Micro. It was shit. The sound quality was auful. It crashed on me after 2 weeks and I tried everything to fix it but nothing. When I got my refund, the guy at the shop said that the Zen Micro gets returned a lot. The only good thing about it was that you could put tunes on to it very quickly.

My 2nd was Philips Go! something-or-other. The sound quality was good, but the software was so crap. It took ages to transfer songs on to the mp3 player, and when it finally did, the album tracks were all in the wrong order. I took it back after 2 days.

The only reason I went for these two and not an iPod was that i wanted something different from everyone. I like individuality and uniquness - but not SHITNESS!!!!! So I finally got the iPos mini, and it's brilliant. It has the best sound quality, fast to transfer tunes, great and simple software in iTunes, the "Click-wheel" is so simple to use when navigating your way through the iPod and, unlike any other mp3 players (too my knowledge) it also has games. It's lasted me since June and nothing has gone wrong. Not even a hint.

Brilliant.

I can't help but find my own holes in the reasons you've stated. Zen Micro was never a great option. It was a different sort of player to the Zen Touch or Zen Xtra - and also the Zen Sleek.

The sound quality of the Jukebox 2, Jukebox 3 and Zen Touch I've owned over the last four years has always been excellent. Also, the AAC file format tends to have a lower sound quality than MP3 files do, though I don't know if Apple have switched away from the AAC format.

I wouldn't even use an iPod if I was given one free, but that's my own personal preference I guess.

i have an 20gb ipod and a sony ericson k750i with a 1gb card, if i crunch the mp3s to 80k they still sound good and i can about 500 songs on it. propper bo! if you have a phone that takes cards, just buy for for about 80 quid. no need to carry an mp3 player with you as well as a phone

iPod's, they look good and are easy to use but feel shoddy, poor battery life and there are mp3 players with better performance, features and value. A good example is the Sony HD-5 has a whopping 50hr battery life and plays attrac which means you can fir 13,000 songs compared to the 20gb iPod AAC format 10,000. Ok then you may not be able to get a Sony HD-5 DJ station but it is a mp3 player, it doesn't need pointless accesories to make you look fashionable and a muggers target. Ipod's are the ONLY choice for noobs.

Anyway the cheapest price for a iPod 20gb is £169.49 from www.ebuyer.com (includes P&P)

They have stopped making the HD-5 and replaced it with the NW-A3000. It has a different look to it but still the same features. The cheapest price is £158.38.

Both have similer prices but the NW-A3000 is far better.

Remeber to check sites such as www.cnet.com for reviews on the latest gadgets and mp3 players. It's a good site with videos and pictures etc and tells you the good and bad of each mp3. Although the rating system I think sometimes is a bit biased.

I hope this was useful to you!

Apple's strength is marketing. They don't have to make the best goods - and don't - but they have strong marketing. Unfortunately, people think "iPod" instead of "mp3 player". It's a shame really but do I really care if people want to waste their money? I'm glad Sony have said they want to take Apple's mp3 market (in a possible joint-venture with Microsoft) with superior players and clearly the ones they've brought out so far are impressive.

You want this.

I have the sony NW-HD3, its fucking brilliant smashes the iPod in every way, the battery life is 30 hours and i can store 13,000 songs on it, I understand its around 5,000 on an iPod(20GB). I've had mine for a year, had no problems with it whatsoever, except for when my brother stood on it and cracked the screen, but my mum gave sony a call and they sent me a new one for like £20, so now i have 2. It's a sexy machine the only bad part about it is the lack of accessories available, however I have some 200W speakers in my room so its sounding great on them. Also that is cheaper and far sexier than an iPod, and it doesn't look like a Venus leg shaver.

Very few people, but you can keep these mp3 player for years to come, adding music as your collection grows, there are many people in my school with 4,000 ish songs on their iPod's. So they don't have long before they have to start deleting some or buying a new player.
