View Full Version : Best goalscoring midfielder???
For me it's gotta be Pires.
Already 9 Premiership goals in 8 starts for Arsenal, and said to be out-of-favour. Plays on the wings yet scores so often from open play. To me he is Henry's strike partner more so than Reyes or Bergkamp. His 14 league goals last season wasn't bad either.
Few players can match him. Scholes got 20 goals in 2002-03 in all competitions, but he was playing as a centre-forward at some stage. Lampard's 15 goals last season isn't bad for a holding midfielder, but some have come from penalties, which means fewer goals from open play.
And the rest :p
What about.........
Kaka
Ronaldinho
Lampard
Del Piero (Unsure of exact position he plays in)
Zidane
Totti (Same as Del Piero)
Robben
Yeah I was doing a poll right after the post :p
Not sure if Totti and Del Piero qualify, they play as forwards very often. Same for Ronaldinho, but I guess you could call the Brazilian an "in-the-hole" midfielder.

It just has to be ol' Bobby Pires, I mean look at it, he's joint second top goal scorer in the Premiership. What a player.

Robert Pires. His record speaks for itself. He has been playing below standard yet is still joint 2nd top scorer in the Premiership, with 9 goals already.

"Paul Scholes, He scores goals..." Says it all really.
EDIT: Except for England
robert pires , he is the best goal scoring midfielder
Ronaldo 9

Pires, as you siad, he's Henry's partner more than Reyes or even Bergkamp.

I go with Lampard, he's more influencial as he play in central midfield. And I exclude Ronny since he played almost like a second foward, a Henry like position, drifting wide as well as back. Lampard is 100% midfielder and how come Gerard isn't in there? He's a close second for me and Scholes third when he's on form( as he is at the moment.)

Yeah, I was gonna ask about Gerrard aswell, recently he's been one of the best midfeilders in the world.
It's definatly a tough one to call since, as has already been pointed out, the difference between midfield and forward is sometimes ever so slight.
I voted Lampard as he is a clear-cut midfielder and has proven to be able to score from pretty much anywhere on the pitch.
Totti, I think has to be considered more of a forward nowadays.

I think Nedved myself.

I would go with Kaka.
Simão..He has 10 goals already. In his first or second season he scored 18.
Dorval, I watched a Benfica game the other night. It was really late and I can't remember much of it, but I remember Manuel Fernandes being sent off for almost nothing at all. Simao scored in that game too to make it 1-1. I think I fell asleep after that. Who would that have been against?

^I was gonna type that before I saw your message :D
anyway Julio Baptista for me aswell, almost 20 league goals last season, fair amount so far in the league and 5 in 4 in the UEFA Cup, and he is only 23!
Ronaldinho is a forward/monster.

Rivaldo he's the best man in Olympiakos and the team really depends on him nowadays. It's same as Barce depending on him and Figo in the late 90's.
Scholes was good he's like the Manutd's key player from watching the EPL these few games. When Scholes plays good then Manutd usually scores alot.

Lampard, Pires often scores these gay tap ins, from a sublime run form Henry, fuck i can stand at the back post and tap em in, Lampard earns his goals, and often scares defenders with his deft shooting skills from outside the box... Lampard by a country mile, (sorry to get all aussie on ur arse. :D) a striker can perform tap ins, not every striker is as dangerous from out side the box, that shot against Arsenal says it all, not much of an angle, or time to perform it, and still middled it, and hit it like it was a beachball
Gotta say Muchael Ballack is sort of a Frank Lampard for Bayern, he also plays in a holding position and strikes them in from outside the box with his own effort.
Have to give some credit to Pires even if he scores those tap-ins, why doesn't anyone else score as many as Pires has for the Gunners???

because he comes in off his flank to met an henry pass at the back post.. after henry has carved up some defender.. they score a heap of those kinda goals (well more than most)
Yeah but he has that predator instinct in him, and his understanding with fellow Frenchman Henry is second to none. They combine really well, not just for Arsenal but for France during good times.
Van Nistelrooy hasn't combined too well with Scholes, despite the pair scoring 64 goals between them in 2002-03. Neither have Ronaldinho and Eto'o.
Van der Vaart scores quite a few for my ML team, he just pops up in the right place at the right time quite often. Out of the list though I would have to say Lampard, did you guys change his stats though? At the moment they seem a little low and he doesn't play like his real-life counterpart =/
Kaka is the best goalscoring Midfielder on that list in my opinion :)

kaka, ronaldihno, lampard, figo all above pires. pires is a super poacher. poaches other people's efforts. i wonder why they call him a midfielder at all.
Baptista, Pires, Ljungberg and Nedved

It was against Estoril. Benfica played dreadfully that night but we managed to win 2-1 with two goals from Simão, one of them by penalty. And yes Manuel Fernandes was sent off for nothing. It wasn't an aggressive tackle. He even got a two match ban! Can you believe it? If he had punched or elbowed the opponent the 2 match ban would've been understandable but for that...

So, going by that logic, does this mean Ruud van Nistelrooy cannot be considered the best goalscorer in the World?
Pires can score all types of goals, he often scores some beautiful curling shots or a drive from inside the box, a nice finish after a team move, or a simple tap-in. If you look at Lampard's shots to goal ratio it is something like (going by this season) 3/4 goals out of 45-50 shots. Whereas Pires' is better. I am confident that Pires has more goals than any other midfielder mentioned so far over the past 3 seasons.
2001/02 13 goals (in half a season, as he missed the other half with an injury)
2002/03 16
2003/04 19 goals
So far this season; 9*
Add to that, the number of assists he has, and the fact he does score some amazing goals, I would say that is damn impressive, and if there is a midfielder in Europe with a better goalscoring record over the past 3 years I would like to see him.

They all count the same, atleast he has the positional sense to get where he is needed the most. I couldn't care less if Lampard earns his goals, you don't get double for grit.

Scholes is so underrated in this thread, when i first heard this topic i thought of Scholes. Scholes is the most versatile player no matter in defensive or attacking position. It has been said that Paul Scholes has one of the best football brains ever seen as Manchester United. He has been compared with greats such as Bryan Robson or Bobby Charlton for his ability to make late runs from deep positions. He can shot anywhere example slamming the ball from long distance or short distance. Scholes can do a volley and bicycle kicks which i never seen Pires doing. Also his heading is underrated because i hardly seen him missing a header.

There is no doubting that Paul Scholes is a quality midfielder, but this thread says 'Best goalscoring midfielder' and Paul's record hasn't been as great as perhaps it could have been. Didn't score for ages for England and before his recent 3 for United he didn't score for a while as well.

It's true Scholes is clearly underrated. Now isn't his good days, I'm sure if it was 2 seasons ago we would all be talking about him. His heading is exceptional as well, I think many of his opponents underestimate him because if his height.
Right now he isn't the complete footballer he used to be.

Grow up. You couldn't reply with a valid argument so you have to pull out a laughable, pathetic insult
Pires and Ruud are a little different, yes, but I have heard a number of times van Nistelrooy described as the greatest goalscorer in the world, and a huge number of his goals are these so-called 'gay tap-ins'.
Please explain my 'incredibly stupid comments'. I have to laugh at being accused of 'stupid comments' when you accuse Pires of scoring 'gay tap-ins', quite ironic really.

ive chosen pires from the above due to his 9 premiership goals this season so far. However i think that one of the best in the world at breaking from midfield and scoring goals is andres d'allesandro of wolfsburg hes truly world class and hes a lefty aswell ;)
At last Pires has the same number of votes for Lampard. I was getting worried Lampard would be your choice for best scorer, seriously I think it should be either Pires or Scholes, who have shown their consistency in scoring well over the years. Unlike Lampard who just woke up last season and started scoring penalties.
just got that this topic wasn't about Pro Evo (doh). Has to be Ronaldinho, he scores penalties, free kicks, open play goals and sets up shit loads as well

the amount of goals pires scores is fantastic, ballack doesn't score as many as he used to due to the fact that he plays deeper.

Lamps, both Scholes and Ronaldihno have been given license to roam by their clubs in recent seasons, whereas Frank has to play a disciplined role too.

He's gonna get Chelsea to buy them so Mourhino can do all his work for him.
Wishful thinking.
Mourinho could utilise them to become the most devastating central midfield partnership in modern football. Scoring loads between them, creating loads between and dominating every midfield around.
Yet Sven will still utilise them as middle-men who stand around the outside of their box as England get pressed back. Then be helpless as the defence hoof the ball up to Rooney and Owen.

I'm not saying Pires or Scholes are not good at getting goals, but to make a comment like that about Lampard, you really don't know anything.
Lampard has been developing and progressing for us over the last couple of years, so it wasn't just last season he became good, and as for the penalties comment, plain stupidity.
Lampard makes alot of goals by himself, like long range shots for example, and on many occasions he does get on the end of moves. He is also a real midfielder, he goes up and down the pitch, whereas Scholes and Pires, are more attacking midfielders, and rarely defend as much.
Speaking of Scholes, perhaps i should make a comment like you and say 'he only woke up 3 games ago'. Scholes hasn't been the goalscoring midfielder he used to be for a long time now.

I know Lampard is probably the best all-round midfielder in England, but in terms of goal-getting, it'll probably not be him. Many of his goals have come from penalties, whereas Scholes and Pires have plucked them from open play.
