A dominating player.Someone who can game in game out create chances, score and basically just liven up the atmosphere.I am thinking Barca let us borrow Ronnie for a season. :p

A single player for a whole league....

Wouldn't work, football isn't always about Ronaldinho and Zidane. You'd be selling them a false view of football. They'll need to appreciate it properly for football to become a success. MLS needs to also stop singling out one player to hype up beyond all belief so that a sport and one person becomes completely synonamous. No prizes for guessing who I'm talking about it MLS!

The MLS needs increased coverage and if it doesn't catch on then it's America's loss.

Yeah But its America.Whole different society. Most team are built on individuals.Micheal Jordan-Bulls, Micheal Vick-Falcons, the list is pretty endless.

Calling it football for a start, and "Major" league Soccer sounds awful.

Hasn't the whole thing been put on hold over money a money dispute? If so, yay!

On a more serious note, it needs to be really American-fied, like refs with lasers or keepers on bungee cords etc. etc.

On second thought, America being the major footballing force would mke me cry, it's one of the few things us Brits are better at.

Quality post. The thing is we have alot of talent that just goes to waste because of the attitude people have towards the sport. The MLS lacks sponsors we only have 10 teams so its still in its infancy(i suppose).

That's bloody hilarious :D !

Anyway during the WC2002, ''Soccer'' was in alot of Americans' interest. It seems to have disappeared now.

The Mls must make the same that the mexican league or the premier league, sign a lot of foreign players that improve the league level.

You need some representative players and teams, or some big international(or intercontinental) tourney(i.e like the CL or UC)
Try to get MLS to show on European TV
But the main thing is it has to grow big in the USA itself, now i know its pretty big, but considering the amount of people that live in the USA there are too few footieaddicts. Maybe workshops on schools might help that conservative minded americans

No not a dominating player,...really that would just ruin everything that the MLS has spent so long to build up here. The MLS needs new stadia so that we aren't playing in 80,000 seat stadiums with no atmosphere, we need more technical play to go with the commited play. We NEED JUST A BIT MORE CASH TO GET BETTER PLAYERS.

I think before cash comes reputation. MLS could have all the money in the world and it still wouldn't attract a lot of players because of the current state of it. Maybe it could become a new Qatar for old players who are clearly past it (Roy Keane anyone? :)) but players in their prime who want to be successful and well-known will not want to play in the MLS.

MLS needs more publicity and more coverage in America to bring in the crowds. The increased standard of youth players will be coming through very soon as football is far more popular amongst children there at the moment than it was 10, 20 years ago.

Once you've got a good talented foundation and more fans and supporters with increased TV coverage then it'll take off properly.

What'll happen after that I've no idea, as you'd only have South American domestic teams to play, as away games to Spartak Moscow might be somewhat of an inconvenience.

The MLS is like another source for European Clubs to recruit players. Almost every good striker is leaving and moving on to European clubs. I think MLS should start expanding its League with other Continents or League for more popularity and publicity. Just imagine, a MLS team playing in the Champions League, it will be freaking awesome and more close to real football than plain old American soccer.

That said I think that americans will be more prone to staying in the US, which the MLS is primarily there to develop.

The idea is good, but then you have to expand the CL to more clubs, or you take some from shitcountries that never win(or won) the CL. They wont like it, but hey, life's a bitch.

Yes, it will potentially develope, but as it develope, it will also lose so many talents. People begin to tune in other football like EPL, La Liga, etc... because they want to see more action. For instant, German Budesliga, I know plenty of people that watch it for the pure reason of MLS stars being in it. Teams like Bayer Lever is replacing the media in American soccer. Its just so hard to build a football foundation when nearly 95% of the nation don't know what the MLS league is.

I think we just need to start keeping our stars.
Going to S. America and looking for good players and try to bring them up to play in the MLS. Getting more Americans involved would also boost the media attention it got.
Maybe even having a team in each state would be nice.
As there isn't one in Arizona. Wish there was....

Though soccer is getting more popular by the year here. More kids are getting into and we are starting with little 5 year olds. I coached a U6 team this year, it was a lot of fun.
Money should come and so should reputation. The US is ranked something like 11th in the world, but our league is pretty weak. And most of our players play in Europe.

The other problem is the Players Association and the Federation. They are in a bid dispute right now over the money players are paid. Kinda sad, but they won't pay them enough, and so they are on strike. I think if all the US players came back to the states to play for the NT we'd be a strong force, as many don't return because the pay is low and they'd miss out on chances at their club to prove themselves.

Only because the NFL used its power to suppress tha sport.

Its not just the NFL but also various sports like Baseball, Basketball, Tennis and even Golf is sweeping America. American Soccer have no chance unless it win some big competition like the Olympics or World Cup. I doubt it though, but in about 2 million years later they might. Then soccer will be the main sport every bar will show.

Also the fact that it requires a bit more work to be good at soccer turns off a plethora of Americans.

More and more people call football - soccer, which quite frankly worries me....
