What are your views on cover versions? Do you think they are a good thing? Or are they just ripping off someone elses work?

Personally I think that cover versions are great, as long as they aren't just a lazy cash-in i.e Westlife, Gareth Gates, Atomic Kitten

Some of my favourite cover versions are:

Joe Cocker - With A Little Help From My Friends (The Beatles)
Nirvana - The Man Who Sold The World (Bowie)
Tori Amos - Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana)
Ryan Adams - Wonderwall (Oasis)
Foo Fighters - Baker Street (Gerry Rafferty)
The Byrds - Mr Tambourine Man (Dylan)
Nirvana - Where Did You Sleep Last Night (Leadbelly)
David Bowie - God Only Knows (Beach Boys)
Noel Gallagher - Help (Beatles)

I don't mind respectable artists doing them, but its also because they are usually live rather than the A side of a single. I love Oasis' version of "my generation". Also I like it when good artists/bands use other peoples riffs melodies like The Flaming Lips using "father and Son" and Tricky using Marvin Gaye, people (especially old people) mon about this but I think it shows appreciation.

I think cover versions are good performed live. Pearl Jam and Oasis I know perform many covers of the whO and Beatles. Pearl Jam performing Baba O'Reilly is great and Oasis - My generation.
What I cant stand is little pop groups who cant think of theyre own songs and just steal otherr songs, slightly change it a bit and makes loads of money off it.

Yeah, and some girl says its a good song and you go "course it is it was written by Burt Bacharach, anyone could sing it well." Although I was playing some Lou Reed and this bird said U2 had done satellite of Love, and she queried who had done the original  I went mad.

The only good cover versions I have heard are:

Oasis - I am the Walrus (The Beatles)
Oasis - My Generation (The Who)
Nirvana - The Man Who Sold the World (Bowie)

Everything else has been shite.

Leave them as they are and write some material of your own man!

?try me first and gimme gimme?

They're just called - 'Me first and the gimme gimmes'

I think cover versions are good as b-sides or as bonus album tracks but never as a single. you're just getting money from someone else's work which is a form of stealing. Write your own songs, if you can't do that, form a covers band!

I think covers make rock and roll, everyone when they pick up a guitar plays someone elses song, I'm not gonna bother with comercial teeny crap too me its a non-entity so as long as noone says its better than the original and they stop doing Beatles covers I'm not bothered. But proper bands can sing anyones songs its cool, my Mum told me she saw Hendrix down South somewhere and he did a version of Sgt Peppers, she said it was quality but the thing was the Beatles had only released it a week before so some people didn't realise it was a cover. Covers rock !!

EDIT: Just listened to an MP3 of Oasis live "daytripper" with Paul Weller singing, covers rock !!

Cover songs can be nice. I really like Rush's latest work: Feedback. It's an EP packed full of covers (no original Rush songs whatsoever). Along the tracks we can find the canadian boys playing The Sekker (The Who), Crossroads (Robeert Johnson), Heart Full of Soul (The Yardbirds), Summertime Blues (Bluee Cheer/Eddie Cochram) and a few others.
By the way, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes perform some great covers!
And the honorable mention goes to Dream Theater playing Metallica's Master of Puppets album live. Now THAT'S somthing!

I think you can only appreciate a cover if you were not around to see it done the first time. There are some really good covers out there, but if you know the original really well they just dont sound right.

I totally disagree with people making a load of money from someone elses work.
