Can be anything that carries a heavy message. I came across this again, what a classic...

Yeah, Quan is immense in that song. Last I heard from him he was apparently on his third felony strike, not sure if he's away for good or whether it was just rumours mind. Will have a look on Wiki soon actually.
Hopefully Jay-Z will respond, especially since Game's went at Beyonce. ;)

Looks like it will get deadly. The Beef to start all beefs is what I like to call it. I think he has to be beware that Jay has faced probably the most ruthless diss from Nas, he knows what to do with Game who he sees him as nothing.
Dear Hunter
Can you please wire me £22.50 excatly so that I can watch The Game in London tommorow. Im sure you can understand the despression I experienced when I read of the concert in the evening paper, and then to realise I have nothing in the bank. This gig should be epic because of what is going on with Rap's Ali vs Tyson.
:crymore:
Maybe next time then.

The Game never showed up at the Oxygen festival. Said he was sick.
If I had knew his gig dates in England earlier in the month, I'd definately have gone over.
Did he play last night in Liverpool?
Game's gig in Newcastle was pretty crazy, if you get on msn Hammerhead I could maybe help you out.
He did miss a gig the other day mind for fear of swine flu, but so did many of the artists who were due to appear apparently.

Na, not many missed tbh. Tinchy had his performance cut short though, as the organisers put him an a ridiculously small tent or marquee thingy, a big crowd turned up and people at the front were getting crushed.:faceplm:
He still rocked the joint though.

Looks like quite a small venue, but good fun though. Here's a little report I read yesterday anyway:
"Blur's Scots gig hung in the balance last night as Graham Coxon got rushed to hospital with food poisoning.
Snow Patrol stepped in to play 15 minutes extra as Blur's set was delayed.
Us rapper The Game caused a near-riot at Oxegen when the crowd was told he wouldn't be appearing.
The 50 Cent protege also cancelled his gig at T In The Park, while electro-pop singer Ladyhawke also failed to make her set - saying on Twitter she was "sneezing and coughing".
And goth rockers The Horrors cancelled at both festivals after lead singer Faris Badwan got bronchitis."

Blur played and were great. Don't know Ladyhawke or The Horrors so not bothered they didn't play. Faris Badwan got a dinosaur?

Surprised the scousers on stage didn't try to rob Game to be honest, they probably sent the little kid up as a distraction.
Either way, I think Jay-Z needs to respond now. Game may not get the same reaction in the USA as he's getting from the rest of the world during his shows, but the videos are obviously making waves around the USA, they're on AllHipHop etc.

Yes indeed.
It's actually far more interesting to me at the moment, rather than proper releases. I've lost track of retail hip-hop over the last 6 months or so.
Some of the guys who do those battles are seriously talented emcees.

Definitely. I've been followed the battling scene for years now so know most of the West Coast emcees pretty well. Phatman's quite interested in it too since I introduced a few battles to him.
Music-wise, Illmaculate's RainCheck Mixtape was superb - might have to cop his new one. Okwerdz makes solid music too, but there's tons of guys I'd check out if you haven't already. We'll have to chop it up a bit about some of them, interested to hear your favourites and whatnot aswell.

before the internet how did you guys hear about hip-hop overseas? I don't imagine they'd play it on UK radio..
Mjällharth
26-08-2009, 20:08
Well, in Estonia they started a radio station playing hip-hop in some 1996-1997, and my brother started listening to it. I was about 4 at the time and around that period I first heard They Reminisce Over You, and it's been my favourite song all my life really. So thanks to my brother I grew up on the likes of Nas and Black Moon in a place where rap wasn't really widespread at the time.

Puff Diddy, Will Smith, John Barnes, Eminem, Fugees, LL Cool J, Afroman, Nelly, Ja Rule and Jay-Z all had hits in the UK before the "youtube" generation.
Not only that but we've had Hip Hop DJs/Radio Stations/Radio shows who've been playing it since forever.
Not only that in the UK some artists have taken elements rap music and turned it into an entirely new genre (Trip-Hop, Grime, Drum & Bass, etc.)

I don't mean Youtube, thats fairly recent...
I'm talking about 1985 til early 1990s...how did people come to know & love hip-hop, especially people who weren't living in the USA
Personally I did what most people in the early-mid 90's did, watch TV. My first cassette's were of Eminem & Dre's "Guilty Conscience" song, and also TQ's "Bye Bye Baby" single.
This stayed quite the same until the internet became more accessible.
My first HipHop experience? The early Timbaland period got my, which I still enjoy going back to once in a while.

The Symphony is considered one of the seminal posse cuts (The lineup includes Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane, Masta Ace and Marley Marl as producer)
I'm surprised you don't know Slam, maybe you're just not familiar with the name, as it's quite famous (atleast I'm under that impression.)
Freestyle Fellowship is one of the best West Coast underground acts, very strong lyrically and this particular song also has a jazzy feel to it (the video on youtube will explain that though!)
Fuck Compton is quite infamous to sum it up. Interesting, and seeing I listened to it as a young one, I've never really embraced Compton-hailing music with open arms.
Diamond D I suppose isn't all that famous, but his strong point is that he can rap decently for a producer, and supplies himself with strong beats.
Sorry Hunter, I feel asleep
Yeah he's due in court soon for something idiotic, I think its armed Robbery.
I never liked him anyway, he seemed a bit too arrogant for someone who has done fuck all for himself and his career.

DJ AM dead.
Dolla dead.
Static Major dead.
C-Murder - life in prison.
Cassidy - escape life.
T.I. - banged up.
Fabolous - shot.
what is it with hip-hop artists?
You just have to wonder whether or not they are still involved in gang activities, which they probably had links to before the money and fame.
Mjällharth
29-08-2009, 09:24
I don't really consider the rap scene to differ that much from the others in this matter, the list of drug fatalities in jazz for example goes a long, long way whilst I also remember violence-caused deaths, examples Lee Morgan and Jaco Pastorius.

he's in Glasgow, SECC with Coldplay.
I don't fancy going to a concert in Glasgow, I can just picture all the strong foreign-like accents, that and I'm not travelling up there to see a gig. I'm sure if he's doing London and Glasgow, he'll do Manchester or Newcastle.
Looks like Jay-Z is out of question :( I actually would travel across England to see someone like Jay, especially if London was out of the picture.
Prices seem too high for me and only had a budget of £50. So i'll have to settle for Rick Ross and Lil Wayne next month. Anyone interested?
I can't see myself ever travelling to London for Rick Ross or Lil' Wayne to be honest. I actually quite enjoy Deeper Than Rap and Carter 3 but not worth the travel, I wouldn't even head down for Jay-Z I don't think, £50 is a lot, and then tie in travel costs, I'd be looking at £100+ for the gig easily.

Now I'm sure everyone's listened to Blueprint 3 by now. He's the kid who absolutely outshines Jay-Z on "A Star Is Born", with the last verse. He is also the first rap artist to be signed to Jay-Z's Roc Nation record label. Surprisingly I was told about J. Cole by a so-called female hiphop fan about 4 months ago but didn't really take her opinion seriously (Gunplay the sexist), but have recently been grabbing as much material from this dude as possible. His whole aura is hiphop his lyrical ability/potential is devastating. I have a feeling he is destined for greatness. If you don't believe me, then check to the following clip:

I think I would BarnDoor-ishly sodomize the bastard in many gruesome ways :ninja:
Just noticed today when in HMV, Dr. Dre's The Chronic has been remastered, and is now released with a DVD showing 70 minutes of behind the scenes footage and other stuff, as well as around 7 previously unreleased Death Row tracks. It was £15 or so in HMV though, I can't wait to buy it in due time though, when it nicely below £10.

Edit:
I can not believe I have found this on youtube!
This in my opinion is possibly the greatest freestyle verse ever. At the tender age of 10 I was obsessed with Canibus and till this day I still know this freestyle word for word, despite not hearing it for little over a decade! In 1997 there was an outstanding mixtape called "Canibus Vs DMX" which I think no longer exists that my elder brother purchased, it was hosted by DJ Clue and another DJ *insert name*, it was a compilation of rare freestyles and verses from both artists tracklisted in a head-to-head manner. This was one of the freestyles on there that I worshipped, please give a moment of silence for both instrumentals due to Canibus murdering them!

Anyone up for a new poll? Throw some suggestions this way of course, might spark some good discussion.
Give it the simple, debatable, but classic 'Greatest Emcee of all time'.
Is Hip Hop:
Dead
Dying
Recovering
Better than Ever
I'd go with that actually.
What rapper would you most like to punch in the face?
That wouldnt be a poll because everyone would either vote Kanye West or Lil Wayne. I know you and Arshavin77 have utmost love for Weezy though :shifty:
 I don't bum him as much as Arshavin77, but I do like him.
I wouldn't vote Kanye either. I'd probably vote for Snoop Dogg, or 50 Cent or someone. I could definately take 50 in a fight :duel:
Dont kid yourself . 50 is built like a beast and I dont think I have anything against Fiddy anymore, if I find his current music a bit shit, I just put on Get Rich Or Die Tryin or Power Of The Dollar
And your kidding about Snoop right?
Snoop's a legend. I'd beat the shit out of Kanye West.
Well, attempt to...
Haha I was joking. 50 would eat me for breakfast, shit me out, then do it again. All the while In Da Club is playing in the background
And yeah I was joking, I quite like Snoop Dogg.
I'd punch Soulja Boy, if he counts as a rapper.
Flo Rida, Soulja Boy and similar artists arent rappers.
Flo Rida, Soulja Boy and similar artists arent rappers.
I think the technical term for what they are is 'twats'.

How about best album of the 00s? Mine's are Nas' 'God's Son' and Jay-Z's 'The Blueprint'.
Love that idea, ties in nicely with the 00s thread in Off-Topic. I'm game for this one if people are willing to throw some albums out to put on the poll. I'll obviously add an "Other" option to the poll for ones not able to fit on, you'd just have to post later on and state which album you think is best of course.
I won't say my favourite(s) yet as I'd like to keep it all quite surprising, but I'll simply throw some album names out to add to the poll. People can agree, disagree on adding them etc.

Just checking to make sure you're not just basing that on the awful recent albums. Original Pirate Material is one of my favourite albums of all time, A Grand Don't Come For Free is nowhere near as good but still OK and the others are terrible.
Actually, I'm just not too fond of that particular English accent in hip-hop and rap. It is like Goodfellas, it just has things in it that I cannot put myself over, which is no fault of either Goodfellas or Mike Skinner.

Right, there's definitely too many album suggestions to create a poll for best album of the 00s. Not really a bad thing, we'll just discuss them instead as opposed to just listing them I guess.
It can only be a great thing that there's too many immense albums to fit into a poll.
I'll share my thoughts on my favourite albums of the 00s and why soon, possibly tomorrow.
So, there has been talk of a Hip-Hop Mixtape, like the PESGaming one done a few days ago. I think its a good idea, I wouldnt mind putting it together.
Me and Hunter briefly discussed what the Mixtape's theme should be and one idea that came up was compiling songs from every year from the 00s era. Any other ideas?

So, ignited by discussions with HH, here's my rap timeline/suggestion list: (Genre name in bold, proposed artists in italic)
*The pre-rap era/poetry (The Last Poets, Gil Scott-Heron)
*The disco and electro-influenced era around the turn of the 70s-80s (Afrika Bambaataa, Kurtis Blow, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Whodini)
*The rock-influenced sound starting from the mid-80s, around the time rap started growing rapidly (Run D.M.C., LL Cool J, Beastie Boys)
Then comes the golden age, which could be divided into different directions, some of which may be pretty close to one another:
*Political rap (Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions)
*The most straight-forward hip-hop genre (can't think of a better name :faceplm:) (Eric B. & Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Ultramagnetic MC's, Slick Rick, EPMD)
*More artistic hip-hop (De La Soul, Stetsasonic, Jungle Brothers, ATCQ, Brand Nubian)
*Gangsta Rap (Ice-T, N.W.A., Ice Cube) (if the West Coast G-Funk of the coming times is also taken into account, then it'd include (Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Warren G, Too $hort, 2Pac?)
*West-Coast Undergrond (Freestyle Fellowship, The Pharcyde, Souls Of Mischief)
*East-Coast (for the lack of a better term) (The Wu-Tang, Nas, Jeru The Damaja, Big L, Mobb Deep, Organized Konfusion, O.C.)
*Jazz-Rap (ATCQ, The Roots, Digable Planets, Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth, Gang Starr, Common)
*Southern Rap (OutKast, Scarface/Geto Boys, Goodie Mob, UGK, Arrested Development)
*Mafioso Rap (Kool G Rap, Jay-Z, Raekwon, AZ, Nas)
It's a rather shallow list, so anyone noticing someone noteworthy missing do point it out, and also I'd happily leave the late 90s and the 2000s to someone else.

*The most straight-forward hip-hop genre (can't think of a better name :faceplm:) (Eric B. & Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Ultramagnetic MC's, Slick Rick, EPMD)
*More artistic hip-hop (De La Soul, Stetsasonic, Jungle Brothers, ATCQ, Brand Nubian)
*Gangsta Rap (Ice-T, N.W.A., Ice Cube) (if the West Coast G-Funk of the coming times is also taken into account, then it'd include (Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Warren G, Too $hort, 2Pac?)
*West-Coast Undergrond (Freestyle Fellowship, The Pharcyde, Souls Of Mischief)
*East-Coast (for the lack of a better term) (The Wu-Tang, Nas, Jeru The Damaja, Big L, Mobb Deep, Organized Konfusion, O.C.)
*Jazz-Rap (ATCQ, The Roots, Digable Planets, Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth, Gang Starr, Common)
*Southern Rap (OutKast, Scarface/Geto Boys, Goodie Mob, UGK, Arrested Development)
*Mafioso Rap (Kool G Rap, Jay-Z, Raekwon, AZ, Nas)
It's a rather shallow list, so anyone noticing someone noteworthy missing do point it out, and also I'd happily leave the late 90s and the 2000s to someone else.
no KRS-one:shocking:
should put him in political rap and straight rap or whatever you called it lol he realy is that good

To coincide with the PESGaming Mixtape's theme of 'No Vocals', Im suggesting having our own one, quite simply our favourite instrumentals. I know its still a bit broad (this is how our planned one stalled last time :faceplm:) but with a bit of mutual agreement on what the sub-theme should be, the tape should be completed swiftly.
The theme should be Dr. Dre instrumentals. :shifty:

What do you guys think? The part about the Goat head thing is very interesting, you should watch the whole video...really interesting.
Oh and dont forget the fact that there was a Joker lookalike in the video, possibly having something to do with Heath Ledger's death in 2008. He may have been from another demonic group that Jay-Z didnt like, therefore killed him off.
:faceplm:
Seriously man, it may be true. I think people are becoming too paranoid over this shit. Jay listens to the media, he knows what people think of him. If they think he is a Devil worshiper then he'd like to poke fun at it. You look back at this video in 5-10 years and you ask him about it when he's old and settled, he'd tell you he did it to get that exact media attention he is getting now, it'll always be known as the 'Devil Video'. If he is, he is, we all got the message before the video and he'll keep on sending them out.
Mjällharth

Essentially, there's two things:
* I don't (as I assume a fair few of us don't) really think Jay-Z is some bizarre sort of world-conquering devil worshipper.
* But primarily I'm constantly bemused by people linking freemasonry to satanism.
Might not completely be in accordance with the subject currently in discussion, but I just felt I'd like to state this.
Seeing this reminds me of Michael Jackson in the 'Earth Song' video with his arms holding the trees (like Jesus on the cross) or Marilyn Manson in, er...., general. Personally, I like having controversial characters in the music industry.
He can't be a devil worshiper. He's an Arsenal fan.

I'm kinda new to this hip/hop thread, but I have been listening to hip-hop for quite a while. I tend to like today's "underground" artists and artists from the 90's. I was wondering if you folks have heard of these artists (which you probably have) and what you think of them. I consider them quite good, so I would recommend them. They range from hardcore to conscious.
Army of the Pharaohs, Blackalicious, Binary Star, Black Star, Blue Scholars, Cannibal Ox, Cunninlynguists, CYNE, MF Doom, Danger Mouse and Jemini, Dead Prez, Deltron 3030, Dilated Peoples, Fashawn, Wu-Tang, Gang Starr, Jurassic 5, The Last Emperor, OC, One Be Lo, Outkast, Panacea, Reks, The Roots, X-clan, Zion I.
If you want sample songs I can post them.

Definitely one of the most under-rated rappers ever for me though, Proof. Outshines most on most tracks I've heard, would have loved to hear some of his solo stuff had he been around today.

You should check out his "Back Like Cooked Crack" mixtape series leading up to the release of his album you've mentioned, should enjoy them if you liked the album. I personally thought the album was too filler, with only a handful of noteworthy songs. I'll forever listen to "Oh Yes (Mr. Postman)" and "Shottas" though, they're the highlights for me.

Yeah, think one of the most underrated ever is quite a bold statement, but I often make slightly exaggerated claims in similar circumstances, purely to try and draw attention to what I'm referring to - in this case in the hope more people check out Proof's catalogue. Besides Eminem (obviously), he was definitely my favourite D12 member, his Searching For Jerry Garcia double CD was pretty damn good, but unfortunately I remember it topping out at about 38 in Tesco or something and falling off before I could cop it. Now that you've reminded me though, I'll check Amazon etc, see if I can buy it for less than a fiver, well worth the money if so. On the same note, D12's Devils Night album was killer, still got that, so many crazy songs on there it's hard to believe.

Anyone familiar with Jazz Liberatorz? I'm quite liking the sound of their Clin d'Oeil album, especially for a 2008 standard, although the namedropping in between tracks is a bit annoying.
I've never had a problem with name-dropping to be honest, but then again Game has been heavily criticised for it and he's one of my favourite artists. I think if it's done to a decent standard in terms of flow and context, I'd happily listen to it.
Oh, and I've just got in from Digital (club), and was devastated beyond belief to see they didn't open the 3rd floor at all (R&B/Hip Hop area). Genuinely disappointed as the majority of the night inside consisted of Indie/Rock music, and while there are one or two classics that were played, it was rather tedious. The only real consolation was that towards the end of the night (2am-ish) I "mooched" to the 2nd floor by myself and began bobbing with a group of Hipsters to Wu-Tang Clan's "Nothin' to Fuck Wit'".
Mjällharth
05-03-2010, 14:59
Well, it was not name-dropping within lyrics as such, but simply every interlude sounded the same with a guest performer saying how much he loves Miles, Mingus, Monk et cetera...there's nothing bad to it, I love their music aswell, hugely at that, but I thought there's simply too much of that, as clichéd sentences never sound overtly good when in high quantity.

“And to tell you fools the truth, I don’t feel this is where I’m destined/ You can call it Hell, but I just say, bruh, I’m below the heavens.”
Among the freshman of the XXL class of 2009 there was one who stood out from the rest, but for many of the wrong reasons. He barely spoke in the interview and he fell back during the video shoot. He lacked all the get-up of a Mickey Factz, all the excessive confidence of an Ace Hood, all the college cockiness of an Asher Roth. On the other hand, he also stood out because he already had an album that was considered by many to be an instant classic– something many career rappers never attain. And he has a breadth of talent wide enough to take the throne that Nas leaves more open with every passing year.
Back in Los Angeles, a crowd of folks were salivating at the thought of this MC filling Hip-Hop’s hunger, yet his aura became clouded with a wave of insecurities as palpable as swirled smoke. Each new record he released was just as banging as the last, but walked so far on the edge of sonic progression that his sound nearly fell off. His toes dangled over the side. Pebbles of verses and beats released themselves into the great precipice and divide between internet and industry. He turned back to the stans and fans who begged him to stay and give them more music. To save this music. Breathe life back into this music — their music. And as quickly as he arrived–
He disappeared.

“I Get Loss For Words, It’s Like I Lost My Nerve…”
If KiD CuDi is the crown jewel of GOOD Music then Big Sean is the unfortunate black sheep. He’s been signed to the label for almost two years and hasn’t received the spins, sales and more importantly, recognition of his record label brethren. He has the potential to have a solid career via radio friendly songs that hit the same demo that Ye and CuDi reach. It’s just that he hasn’t had a solid crack at the spotlight.
While the subject matter behind most of his songs doesn’t stray from getting money, bagging chicks, or being “Finally Famous,” he does have a few flashes of potential greatness. Take “Minds Playing Tricks On Me” off of his UKNOWBIGSEAN tape. It’s an introspective account on losing everything you took for granted in an untimely murder. This song exhibits the young rapper’s growth in content and lyrical ability since his debut mixtape.
Spitting on a classic is a risky move to say the least, especially for a rapper without any considerable radio play. Sean held it down and gave people an idea on why he got signed in the first place. Let’s hope he lives up to his finally famous call sign in the future.

The newer breed of rappers have been refreshing, they all have their own set of fans too, appealing to all sorts of music fans. I'd happily stop hearing from loads of rappers to hear more of Tyga, Wiz Khalifa, J.Cole, Big Sean, Fashawn, Blu, Wale, BOB, Roth...

Hearing a new MC’s album being compared to Illmatic is not a daily occurrence; especially in the digital era where most fans treat albums as disposable as a club flyer. Fashawn’s 2009 album Boy Meets World, however, is one of the few that have been bestowed with this honor from a couple different outlets. My first reaction to this idea was that it was just hype to draw in listeners that might have overlooked his Exile-produced gem so I kept it moving.
That was until yesterday.
Now, I’m not here to sell the idea to anybody necessarily. Illmatic is one of those records that is a timeless masterpiece that remains a pivotal moment in Hip-Hop history. The reason that it extends further than that though, is the fact that it actually captures the essence of what it was like to live in New York City in the early ‘90s. The same way that Nas plays narrator for that period of time & geographic location, Fashawn does for the Central Valley of California in 2009 on his song “The Ecology.”
Over a haunting composition that Exile splices together with the precision only a master of the MPC could, the 20 year old Fresno resident spends nearly three minutes painting one of the most vivid and accurate pictures of my area that I have ever heard. California is about as diverse as the country it resides in. While there have been many in the Bay Area who have done a great job describing the coastal area they reside in and hundreds of L.A. rappers who have done the same for their place of residence, Fashawn is the first rapper I have encountered who has given such a perfect description of the place I grew up. “The Ecology” is one of the many reasons why Boy Meets World is a worthwhile listen, which is definitely a must purchase type of release for any fan of Hip-Hop. There is a reason he made that XXL cover.

Rest in peace Keith Elam, a true legend of the rap scene.
Apparently this letter was released by Solar as Guru's farewell letter, while we can't be certain he wrote it I think it's better off to post it anyway.
"I, Guru, am writing this letter to my fans, friends and loved ones around the world. I have had a long battle with cancer and have succumbed to the disease. I have suffered with this illness for over a year. I have exhausted all medical options. I have a non-profit organization called Each One Counts dedicated to carrying on my charitable work on behalf of abused and disadvantaged children from around the world and also to educate and research a cure for this terrible disease that took my life. I write this with tears in my eyes, not of sorrow but of joy for what a wonderful life I have enjoyed and how many great people I have had the pleasure of meeting.
My loyal best friend, partner and brother, Solar, has been at my side through it all and has been made my health proxy by myself on all matters relating to myself. He has been with me by my side on my many hospital stays, operations, doctors visits and stayed with me at my home and cared for me when I could not care for myself. Solar and his family is my family and I love them dearly and I expect my family, friends, and fans to respect that, regardless to anybody’s feelings on the matter. It is my wish that counts. This being said I am survived by the love of my life, my sun KC, who I trust will be looked after by Solar and his family as their own. Any awards or tributes should be accepted, organized approved by Solar on behalf myself and my son until he is of age to except on his own.
I do not wish my ex-DJ to have anything to do with my name likeness, events tributes etc. connected in anyway to my situation including any use of my name or circumstance for any reason and I have instructed my lawyers to enforce this. I had nothing to do with him in life for over 7 years and want nothing to do with him in death. Solar has my life story and is well informed on my family situation, as well as the real reason for separating from my ex-DJ. As the sole founder of GangStarr, I am very proud of what GangStarr has meant to the music world and fans. I equally am proud of my Jazzmatazz series and as the father of Hip-Hop/Jazz. I am most proud of my leadership and pioneering efforts on Jazzmatazz 4 for reinvigorating the Hip-Hop/Jazz genre in a time when music quality has reached an all time low. Solar and I have toured in places that I have never been before with GangStarr or Jazzmatatazz and we gained a reputation for being the best on the planet at Hip-Hop/Jazz, as well as the biggest and most influential Hip-Hop/Jazz record with Jazzmatazz 4 of the decade to now. The work I have done with Solar represents a legacy far beyond its time. And we as a team were not afraid to push the envelope. To me this is what true artists do! As men of honor we stood tall in the face of small mindedness, greed, and ignorance. As we fought for music and integrity at the cost of not earning millions and for this I will always be happy and proud, and would like to thank the million fans who have seen us perform over the years from all over the world. The work I have done with Solar represents a legacy far beyond its time and is my most creative and experimental to date. I hope that our music will receive the attention it deserves as it is some of the best work I have done and represents some of the best years of my life."

It's a shame about Guru, truly, I never really took the time to appreciate the full depth of his catalogue. The only saving grace I think is that it was somewhat of a natural death, something his family will have come to terms with over time, making the process possibly a touch easier than if it were an untimely and unexpected death.
On another note, I thought I'd take it old school, with the new school, if you know what I mean. Young artist from the Bronx I believe, by the name of Young Flame just kicking it and rapping about objects pushed in front of him by his crew. All in one dingy room, having a good time, the way it should be:

im going to be berated for this but i bought Asher Roths album after hearing it a few times, i find it a nice album to like listen to whilst in the car driving.
All the comparison with him and em are borderline racist but hes more Travis McCoy and GCH than Marshall. One for the kids
I thought it was alright. 'His Dream' is probably my favourite track. I think we like it because of its 'college' theme. Drinking, smoking weed, scoring chicks etc.

yeah, my favourite track would be Lark on My GoKart i also acquired his mixtape with all the 'cover' sampling he does and thats also quite good.
I think that album is class.
Theres some great summer tunes on it. Might have to stick it in the player later.

It'd appear there's some sort of classic-album-sequel-mania going on. I'm not going to complain, though :D

has anyone heard this about producer solar and guru:angry:[[
The death of rapper Guru on Monday, at the age of 43, would be tragic enough anyway. One half of prominent New York group Gang Starr, and a prolific solo artist, best known in the UK for his Jazzmatazz project, Guru (real name Keith Elam) was regarded by many as one of the great MCs. But the circus that has surrounded him in the troublesome last year of his life has rendered his death ugly as well, culminating in a bizarre message posted online this week, purportedly written by Guru himself from beyond the grave. What's going on?
This whole story began in 2003 after Gang Starr released their final album as a duo, after 16 years as one of New York's most critically acclaimed hip-hop acts (despite Guru being from Boston and DJ Premier from Texas, the two became standard-bearers for Brooklyn). The split didn't seem particularly amicable, yet fans expected them to get back together quickly, as feuding rap duos often do. Enter Solar. The self-styled "Super Producer" became Guru's new partner in rhyme in 2005, although the pair's releases together attracted critical brickbats and indifferent sales, prompting even more fans to wish that Gang Starr would settle their differences and reunite.
Rumours of Guru's death first circulated on 28 February, when he suffered a cardiac arrest and slipped into a coma (he eventually rallied before succumbing to cancer this week). While Guru was taken into hospital, the rumour mill ground into gear and Solar emerged as an even more divisive figure. He issued bedside statements on behalf of Guru and was then forced to defend himself when Guru's nephew, Justin Nicholas Elam-Ruff, issued a video claiming Solar was preventing Guru's family from visiting him, and was exploiting a sick man. Solar refuted the statement, and claimed that various members of Guru's family had been to the hospital. It was also pointed out that Guru had signed a proxy to allow Solar to make medical decisions for him, and part of this was that certain people – including DJ Premier – were not to be allowed access to him in hospital.
The hip-hop blogosphere remain convinced that Solar was issuing statements on Guru's behalf that the rapper would have been too unwell to deliver, something they're even more vehement about now that his death is marked by yet another press release from Solar. Carried on Solar's own PR website, the statement begins, as if written by Guru himself: "I, Guru am writing this letter to my fans, friends and loved ones around the world. I have had a long battle with cancer and have succumbed to the disease." He goes on to call Solar his best friend and medical proxy, then disassociates himself from DJ Premier:
"I do not wish my ex-DJ to have anything to do with my name likeness, events tributes etc. connected in any way to my situation including any use of my name or circumstance for any reason and I have instructed my lawyers to enforce this. I had nothing to do with him in life for over seven years and want nothing to do with him in death. Solar has my life story and is well informed on my family situation, as well as the real reason for separating from my ex-DJ."
This may all be true. But the material in the statement that insists not only on the purity of Guru and Solar's friendship, but also on the pre-eminence on their musical work together, doesn't read like the last will and testimony of a dying man, especially of a man trying to make peace with a partner, DJ Premier, who is beloved in the hip-hop community and has offered nothing but dignified support for Guru. Twitter has been aflame since Guru's death, and Solar's stock is not rising. ?uestlove from The Roots tweeted, "not trying to bring negativity into the situation. but i do NOT believe he wrote that letter. 1) he was in a coma. 2) HE WAS IN A COMA!"
Whatever the truth, it won't end there. Fans everywhere are turning to their Gang Starr and early Jazzmatazz records – where Guru worked with the likes of Roy Ayers, Donald Byrd, Chaka Khan and Isaac Hayes – to remember the man known as Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal. They're not turning to their Solar-produced Guru records. They're turning on Solar, and those closest to Guru will be demanding answers.

I'm not going to lie, I used to like Immortal Technique a bit, I've even got Revolutionary Vol. 1 & 2 (Vol. 1 signed by the man himself). But in terms of rapping ability, he doesn't possess much, with his flow being sub-standard and his continuous attempts to overcomplicate lyrics when it's unnecessary. I still enjoy Revolutionary Vol. 2 from time to time, but listening to Immortal Technique for more than about 15 minutes at a time can become more of an annoyance than a pleasure. Again, displaying his lack of natural rapping skill.
I'm sure most people will have seen it by now, or at least the "Making of" video which was released prior to the official release. But I think it's worth posting Ice Cube's "I Rep That West" video, purely it's immenseness. Rarely in Hip-Hop do we get superb videos, most consist of the artists simply rapping in front of the camera, with little effort made to produce a genuinely good interesting video. Here though, I think we can all appreciate that it's an iPod worthy video. Let's just hope Ice Cube's new album does relatively well.

Just thought I'd drop in to say Hov was incredible on Monday night. You really felt in the presence of a legend, and it was easy to see why. His ability to maintain flow, show appreciation to the fans and rock the set with Memphis Bleek was stunning.
Mr. Hudson started the show, but was quite average to be honest, I wasn't expecting much from him considering I don't actually like him as an artist. When Hudson started, the MEN was only about three-quarters full anyway so the atmosphere was a bit dead. The girls obviously went wild for Drake when he followed Hudson's mini-set. The arena was starting to get full now, so the atmosphere was building which helped Drake I think. Obviously it's difficult to vibe to Drake's live performances when they're solely directed toward the female audience, but seeing him perform "Forever" was good. He tried to show love to Lil' Wayne too by attempting to get the crowd to rap Weezy's verse on "Goin' In" but no one knew the lyrics so it failed miserably and Drake himself just rapped it . I was saying to my mate it was very poor judgement from Drake considering that specific song didn't do well over here, whereas if the band recreated the "A Milli" beat, I imagine the entire arena would have been rapping every word for him. Anyway, Drake finishes his set after about 40 minutes, it was fairly good, but not great. The build up to Jigga began...
There was a break between sets, and then bam, Notorious BIG's "Hypnotize" came on and seriously scared the shit out of every unsuspecting audience member (it was that loud!). A 10-minute timer appeared on the several screens as some classics played out (Hypnotize, Hail Mary...). The legend that is Hov took the stage and rocked the crowd. He had the crowd in the palm of his hand, and everyone in the arena was standing for the duration. Being primarily a BP3 tour, he played a lot of the newer songs, but also took it way back with classics too which was amazing to witness. The crowd were loud as hell too, and it echoed nicely around the arena although there was little noise during the "Can I Live.." hook! I couldn't believe a lot of the crowd didn't know the song, that was disappointing from them to be honest. "Big Pimpin'" had everyone amped celebrating, then he had the crowd swaying all throughout "Hard Knock Life". The crowd responded really well to "Run This Town", "Empire State of Mind" and definitely "Public Service Announcement" (this song in particular me and my friend were spazzing on, wanted to hear this one so much and he nailed it).
He was doing his thing of thanking everyone at the end and pointing out people in the crowd for praise. One person near the front had an England shirt held up with "Jigga #1" printed on the back, Jay obviously appreciated it and signed it for him/her and must've written an essay because it was a good minute or so he was scribbling for. A lass toward the front also had a sign saying "Hov's a Blackberry Bold, Lauren is his Sidekick" and he loved that, and even struck a pose for a minute just for her (while her camera was playing about ). Then he told her to record a video, because he got close and rapped into the camera what the sign said in the "Venus vs. Mars" rhythym several times - it was great of Hov and no doubt absolutely made the lasses night one she'll never forget.
Now that I've seen him live, I want to see him again, and again, and again. I'm praying he returns back to the UK next year sometime for a tour of all his classics, I'd pay big money for that.
I'll get some videos these next few days anyway (not mine since my camera's a disgrace):

Man, Birmingham will never be the same after last night. Jay Z absolutely killed it. I cant say much more than what Hunter just did because it looked like he did the same thing yesterday. Standing 4 rows from the front, I felt everything being touching distance to Hov.
I went with 4 mates and they were quite into Mr.Hudson so I guess it was okay for them, he wasnt too bad but Ive never listened to any of his music apart from Supernova which I somehow knew the words to the chorus (:ninja:), It mustve been the Kanye effect. Drake soon followed and he was very good, but like Hunter said, he was more directed towards the female audience. I saw a chick leave as soon as his set was done which pissed me off. You go to see the God MC, not Drake you stupid bitch. His performance impressed me, but his own band were even more impressive, they were amazing. The "Free Weezy" chants gave me goosebumps, they were so loud! Thats how much Lil Wayne is felt over here in England these days, a few years ago I wouldve been totally against it, asking why the hype, but now I understand.
Back to the topic, Jay Z was incredible from start to finish. Ive seen loads of his concerts on video, so I kinda half expected his set but it didnt matter when his songs are that great. Biggie's 'Hypnotize' blasted out and suddenly that got the standing crowd going wild whilst a 10 minute ticker came on the two screens, we knew it was time. I think everyone around me knew the words to Hypnotize which got me fired up, then 2Pac's 'Hail Mary' came on and even the standing crowd started moving to that, that was followed by 'Smells like Teen Spirit', cue the white crowd to sing that.
The curtains were drawn and his set was revealed and it was breathtaking, just breathtaking. He came out to a huge roar of "HOVA, HOVA, HOVA..." and started off with the Intro from 'Dynasty Roc La Familia' which I think I was the only person in my standing area to know the words to after I told my mates he'll probably start with 'Empire State of Mind'.
After that, it was a blur, I wasnt drunk or anything it was just too much to grasp and it'll all come back to me once I see the pictures. Of course I remember the stand out performances like 'Big Pimpin'', 'Hard Knock Life' and 'Run This Town'. But the rest of it was still so sick.
