Man, you brothers heard about Rick Ross? The guy's health is looking real ropey right now. He's had 2 seizures today, on his jet. Here's the details:
The First Seizure (http://www.tmz.com/2011/10/14/rick-ross-passed-out-plane-emergency-landing/#.TpjQlXKyA8o)
The Second Seizure (http://www.tmz.com/2011/10/14/rick-ross-passed-out-plane-emergency-landing/#.TpjQlXKyA8o)
Ross has been progressing each year, and been getting better each album. This would suck if anything bad happened. He needs to lose some weight and slow down his schedule for real it seems.

I'm awaiting this album.
One of my all time favourite 50 songs for sure. I've been on a bit of a 50 binge lately, and his earlier work is just brilliant to be frank. So thankful for what he's contributed to gangsta rap over the years.

Didn't know there was a video for this, it's gone under the radar I guess. Quite eerie stuff, fittingly so given the murky, swampy track.

My pick of 2009:
Asher Roth - Alseep in the Bread Aisle
Rick Ross - Deeper Than Rap
Slaughterhouse - Slaughterhouse
Jay-Z - Blueprint 3
Kid Cudi - Man on the Moon: The End of Day
Wale - Attention Deficit
Eminem - Relapse
2010:
Wiz Khalifa - Kush and OJ
Nas and Damien Marley - Distant Relatives
Drake - Thank Me Later
Currensy - Pilot Talk
Rick Ross - Teflon Don
Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Currensy - Pilot Talk II
2011 (A bit more fresher in the mind):
LeCrae - Rehab:The Overdose
Talib Kweli - Gutter Rainbows
Lupe Fiasco - Lasers
Wiz Khalifa - Rolling Papers & Cabin Fever
Tyler, The Creator - Goblin
MMG - Self Made
Big Sean - Finally Famous
Kendrick Lamar - Section 80.
Jay-Z & Kanye West - Watch The Throne
There are loads more, plus mixtapes. A lot of this stuff is commercial so I don't know if you'll like it.

How did you miss 'Cole World' and 'Take Care' for 2011? Also, Evidence's 'Cats And Dogs' is probably a top five album this year.
Lupe's "Lasers" was a massive disappointment. I was genuinely gutted when I heard it. I've just watched this video review of Lasers, and I think it sums the album up very well to be honest:
Cy67iqBfdws
Anyway, ones not mentioned that are worth listening to:
2009:
J. Cole - The Warm Up
2010:
J.Cole - Friday Night Lights
Fat Joe - The Darkside Vol. 1 (you will be pleasantly surprised Nifty)
Mac Miller - K.I.D.S.
2011:
Lil' B - I'm Gay (I'm Happy)
Game - RED Album (inconsistent album, but there's still some gems on it)
A$AP Rocky - LiveLoveA$AP

Did not like Finally Famous, Lasers, Rolling Papers or Take Care at all really. I'll try and make a list of recommended albums by the end of the year.
I've not heard Finally Famous yet, but Lasers was so frustrating that I sold my copy within days of buying it. I just couldn't face looking at it in my collection, knowing that it wasn't really a Lupe Fiasco album, but more so an Atlantic Records album. Therefore to save myself the frustration, I sold it before it's value dropped (and I "never" sell albums I buy).
Rolling Papers was quite good, but it definitely could have been better based on what Wiz has produced in the past on his mixtapes for sure.
As for Take Care, I've only heard the first half of it, but I've been a little let down. The first song was really quite great I thought, but after that, it doesn't seem to peak too much. It's still an album worth listening to, but perhaps not worth buying for the collection based on what I've heard so far.
Which reminds me, I'm just downloading Fat Joe's follow up now: The Darkside Vol. 2. I'll probably give my thoughts as to what it's like in the next day or two. If it's anything like the first volume, then I'm going to be in for a treat. Darkside Vol. 1 was perhaps one of the most pleasant surprises that I've had in terms of Hip Hop in the last year or two. I just didn't expect much from a Fat Joe album, I don't think anyone did, but he really delivered with great production and fitting rhymes. He kept the theme running throughout and it was really quite a solid effort, and one I definitely own proudly in my collection.
How did you miss 'Cole World' and 'Take Care' for 2011? Also, Evidence's 'Cats And Dogs' is probably a top five album this year.
Yeah I know. I actually have only listened to those two the past month or so. Great albums.

I only like a few songs on Lasers but my feelings on the album kinda softened.

During your time away, I've been trying to convey to him my appreciation for some music from the South. I'm not sure if he's bought into it, but I think he understands that it's quite a unique scene in terms of culture, and the fact that the music is so unique makes it quite special - at least the decent stuff anyway.
But Lasers was just a shame. Sure there was one or two good songs on it, but the album was just painful. I find it so difficult to look past the politics surrounding the album because I just get the feeling that Lupe himself doesn't really like the album, he merely put it out to get it out the way, so he can get his career back on track with his next project. "All Black Everything" is probably the highlight of the album, but I still wouldn't recommend the album to be honest.

That's a miserable statement there and you know it. Those three albums simply sound mediocre as fuck. There are quite a few different-styled wordsmiths around, Khalifa and Big Sean don't really strike me as being one of the most noteworthy.
Returning to the album topic, I'm disappointed Jay Elec trolled us again over his Act II coming this year.

Nifty
Diamond District - In The Ruff (Old school, east coast, 90s boom bap shit. Nice)
Pac Div - Church League Champions/Don't Mention It/Mania! (Smooth West coast sound with a sprinkling of southern sounding sht)
Freddie Gibbs - Str8 Killa No Filla/Cold Day In Hell (Versatile, yet gangsta. Nice)
Danny Brown - Detroit State of Mind 4/The Hybrid/XXX (Weird sounding Detroit cat, with a lot of humour)
Roc Marciano - Marcberg (Gully NY sound, reminicent of old RZA. Nice on the bars to.)
Curren$y - Pilot Talk/Pilot Talk II/Covert Coup/Pretty much anything post This aint a Mixtape (Money, Bitches, Weed. All day. Nice.)

http://theerraticnortherner.blogspot. com/2012/01/top-50-hip-hop-albums-of-2011_31.html
My top 50 of last year. It was originally a nifty little post with colourful pictures and all that, but thanks to blogspot being a cunt and shuffling the pictures around every time I posted I took most of them off.
Damn that's a long list Mjall. The vast majority of which I've not heard yet (and therefore cannot really comment on their placement).
No "Lasers"? :joel: Wise decision though, I was also massively disappointed with the album bar one or two songs. I think it's safe to say I've already wiped the album from my memory and have let Lupe off the hook.
I'm surprised to see "I'm Gay (I'm Happy)" so far down the list at number 32. I believe the album to be really great, and one of my favourites from last year - however, as I've already mentioned, I'm yet to hear a lot of the choices on your list.
Goblin did make a few waves last year, however on the whole I think the album was a bit of a let down. It was 'quite good', but I wouldn't give it much more credit than that. But there's only so much of the vulgarity I can listen to, especially when it feels forced for the sake of it in my view.
I'm definitely making notes of some of these albums though. I'm very intrigued by "The Wonder Years", as I'm quite a fan of Little Brother. I still regard "The Minstrel Show" as one of the most overlooked/underrated albums of recent years. It's almost magical, it's that good. So "The Wonder Years" is one I think I'll be checking out real soon.
Other albums from that list I'll be making sure I check out; PL3DGE, All 6's and 7's, Rhythmatic Eternal King Supreme, The Greatest Story Never Told, Charity Starts At Home, The Dreamer/The Believer, Return of 4Eva, Black Up and of course 'undun'.
I've many Roots album sitting in the collection, still waiting to be listened to! I think it's about time I put all those CDs onto my iTunes, before then making my way onto "undun".
I definitely want to say well done on the Top 50 list, as it's quite an achievement, and there's no doubting how much listening time and effort went into it. The written descriptions underneath are very intriguing as well - in that while they describe the album, they also tease you, which is wonderful as they leave me curious. We all know curiosity 'has' to be explored, so good job man. Give yourself a pat on the back, and have some rep too!

Guy's I need help on a song i've been trying to remember for the longest.
The music video has Rakim in it and some slutty women rapper.
The story of the music video is about some girl catching her boyfriend in a strip joint.
The girlfriend is driving down the street and spots her boyfriend is in the strip club. Rakim is sat down rapping towards a stripper and then the slutty rapper who is the stripper is rapping while on the stage in a strip club.
It's been pecking my head for ages.
If anyone can remember the song you are a legend.
I'd say the song was about 2003'ish but that's a guesstimate.
C'mon heads don't let me down.

This actually seems to be coming!
Beanie Sigel's heading off to jail in about 2 weeks time on his tax evasion case (sentenced to 2 years). So what does he do? He goes and gets pulled up during a traffic stop just before going in, and is caught with possession of a gun and a controlled substance (bottle of lean). Now, in relation to the former, while Beanie was a passenger in the car, both he and the driver are already convicted felons, so that rules out any permission to carry a firearm. And the latter? Perhaps reckless, but I wouldn't consider lean too far from alcohol in terms of damaging substances. Looks like we won't be seeing Beanie Sigel for many years now. Reminds me of the following song, of which I happen to like:

Latest mixtape from RiFF RaFF aka Jody HighRoller, along with the free (legal) download link and review:
http://cdn.stereogum.com/files/2012/08/Riff-Raff-Birth-Of-An-Icon1.jpg
"There’s a very good chance you’ll hate Riff Raff. In fact, if you’re reading this, there’s a decent chance you already do. For a certain breed of rap fan, Riff Raff is a kind of exaggerated boogeyman version of everything that’s wrong with the genre: Embrace of novelty, voracious consumption, bad tattoos, Soulja Boy affiliations, shamless earworm addiction. And he certainly plays the village-idiot part with rare elan: The MTV reality-show origin story, the on-camera cocaine consumption, the willingness to ink the logos of MTV and BET and Worldstar into his skin. It took me months to get from “holy shit this guy’s an idiot” to “holy shit this guy’s amazing.” Plenty of others will never make that leap, and that’s fine. Respectable, even. But Riff Raff is amazing. He’s what happens when free-associative Ghostfacian riddle-brags worm their way into swag-rap neon, when ridiculous nonlinear punchlines become halls of mirrors, when questions become more important than answers. He’s the evolutionary Paul Wall, a self-created palefaced rap cartoon character whose mouth-diamonds sometimes obscure his ability to craft lines that bounce around in your head for days. He’s Lil B if he had a sense of rhythm and an idea of how funny he is. He’s the guy who brings the credibility to Andy Milonakis’s rap trio. He is a euphoric conundrum, and he’s better at getting me lost in YouTube wormholes than anyone else in rap today.
Birth Of An Icon is Riff’s debut for Mad Decent. He’s signed to Diplo’s label, as far as I can tell, the same way he’s signed to Soulja Boy’s SOD Money Gang — in some vague capacity that presumably won’t impede his ability to drop infectious YouTube hits whenever he feels like it. The elevator pitch on Birth Of An Icon is that the tape was supposed to collect a vast handful of Riff’s past YouTube jams, except in professionally-mastered form, and with a little new material sprinkled in, all intended to maximize Riff’s appeal to the whole new generation of Diplo fans presumably just now catching on. Well, on its own terms, it’s a glorious failure. The tape is rich in old YouTube gems — “Larry Bird,” “ICU,” “Jose Canseco” — but they don’t sound any less digitally distorted here than they do on the vast numbers of unofficial (and great) Riff Raff collections that populate DatPiff’s seedier edges. And the finished project is a sprawling mess, programmed with no sense of flow or narrative. But all that is fine, since Riff Raff has to be a mess. It’s his nature. If those old songs aren’t particularly well-mastered, I don’t think it’s because Mad Decent’s engineers did a shitty job. I think it’s because Riff Raff is unmasterable.
In that sense, then, Birth Of An Icon really does make for an ideal Riff Raff introduction, since you have to deal with all the moments of deep annoyance and low bitrate to get to the jewels of awesomeness. This being Mad Decent, the tape has more of a dance-music bent than I’d prefer, since Riff’s more comfortably rapping over slow, tinny, winding synths than jacked-up BPMs. But that dance-music side means we get to hear some delirious pieces of absurdity like “Only I Can Hear Your Broken Heart,” in which Riff raps surreal loverman talk (“Don’t limit me, I’m limitless / Diamonds on my neck, diamonds on my kiss / I really hate to be quaint / Questions on my Anne Frank”) in a fake British accent that reminds me of the Pet Shop Boys’ Neil Tennant. Or like the glimmering, pounding “Rice Out,” which has been stuck deep within my brain-matter since the moment I heard it. I keep wanting to post lyrics from it on Twitter, but I’m worried people would think I was having some kind of stroke: “Don’t you know I iiiced out my liiiightouse / Don’t make me bring the rice out.”
And anyway, even the best Riff Raff tracks have moments where he trails off mumbling, or where he seems to lose any track of where he is in the world. Riff reminds me of prime-era Lil Wayne in ways that go beyond his deeply strange sartorial choices; in floating from one subject to the next so effortlessly, he can often lose the thread completely. And that sense of perpetual highwire is one of his great gifts as well as his drawbacks. When he’s just moving freely between ideas, he’s at his best: “See, I know to propaganda / Your boy’s at Rucker Park with improper handles / The paint is egg nog, the seats is butterscotch / The flow irregular, freestyle unorthodox.” After Action Bronson bodies the fuck out of the floaty beat on “Bird On A Wire,” he doesn’t try to compete for pure firepower; instead, he turns in a Tourettically weird verse that jumps all over the meter and never quite settles in, fragmenting a regular guest-verse through a verbal prism.
Riff Raff will probably eventually move on to making planned-out albums with set collaborators, because that’s just the way the world works. But for all its glaring flaws, I love how Birth Of An Icon — and its unlicensed cousins like Summer Of Surf and The Rap Game’s Larry Bird — capture a rapper who exists as much as a spectral YouTube presence as an actual human being.

Rza's Soundtrack for his new movie is quite good. Currently there is a free stream available: http://soultemplemusic.bandcamp.com/album/the-man-with-the-iron-fists-soundtrack
Check it out, I was impressed.
I think like brother futsal above here, it's time we all really breathe life back into this thread, with regular debates, discussions, classic topics, hot relevant topics, sharing thoughts upon new albums/mixtapes etc.
DISCUSSION #1 - HOT TOPIC: GUCCI MANE
Anyway, I'll get right in to it. Some of these discussions may relate to the mainstream, and others more so the underground, but I think it's important that we all at least listen to the material or inform yourself upon the topic in order to be able to express some valid points. This particular opening topic, is certainly red hot at the moment from the various different global Hip Hop websites that I've visited in just the past week. That is, Gucci Mane's "Truth" record, closely followed up by his newly released and strongly promoted Trap God (http://www.datpiff.com/Gucci-Mane-Trap-God-mixtape.391802.html) mixtape.
If you're somewhat unaware of Gucci Mane, and in particular the issues surrounding himself and Young Jeezy, I'd recommend having just a quick read up upon the situation and his legal issues (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gucci_Mane#Legal_issues) in order to fully understand/appreciate the magnitude of the "Truth" record within this post.
For those of you who've not yet had a chance to hear the record and see the video, here it is below:
FDK9bsGpdW0
I'll of course open up, sharing my thoughts upon the song to help kick start the discussion. The video and song dropped simultaneously, exactly a week ago now. My first experience soaking this all in, was as hard-hitting as it could possibly be. It was as if I could feel the tension simply through the screen, and that in itself is quite a scary notion. I won't go into quotables, as to not spoil it, but Gucci really brought the rice out on "Truth" with some excessively harsh lines. It will most definitely be interesting to see if Young Jeezy responds, or alternatively ignores, however this is a particular occasion in which Jeezy needs to respond I feel.
What further engrains the viciousness of the verbal attack, is the simplicity of the video. The song itself carries solid weight, but having a simplistic video of which primarily focuses upon Gucci's face and mouth, works wonders and absolutely drills home the intent behind the message.
I've just downloaded the Trap God (http://www.datpiff.com/Gucci-Mane-Trap-God-mixtape.391802.html) mixtape, so I'll give some a listen tonight, finishing the rest off tomorrow.

Thanks for the heads up brother, I'll definitely go out of my way to give it a listen. I've just viewed the track listing, and it seems fairly solid, with minimum features - something I believe is important is you're intending to carve your own lane within the music scene. By refraining from features, it gives both the album and the artist a stronger identity, so I have to commend Kendrick Lamar thus far. Next up, is actually listening to the album.
I've been transferring many albums onto my new iTunes, so that's taken a fair while. Anyway:
DISCUSSION #2 - THE RESURGENCE OF A SUB-CULTURE: CHOPPED AND SCREWED
It's no secret by now that I am indeed a big fan of the Chopped and Screwed sub-genre within Hip Hop. For those unaware, it's essentially the art form of slowing down a song (Screwing), whilst also often quickly repeating (Chopping) certain aspects within a song. When done well, this ultimately creates a hypnotically mesmerising song, especially when accompanied by a video to match.
Here's a song that I just happened to be listening to and viewing about 10 minutes ago, and felt it was certainly worth sharing. It would probably be dismissed and overlooked within the general music thread, and as such, posting it within this Hip Hop thread can add to the refreshed attempts of discussion.
Enjoy (hopefully)!

Lil Debbie is incredibly green and new to the rap game, and is without question in the early stages of her career. But thus far, she's been quite good, and with the likes of Kreayshawn and RiFF RAFF there to mentor her, especially the latter, Debbie's creativity has been showcased through her music and clothing.
The above song is from Lil Debbie's debut mixtape EP Keep It Lit (http://www.datpiff.com/Lil-Debbie-Keep-It-Lit-mixtape.377291.html), which can be found by simply clicking on the mixtape title in bold.

chopped and screwed music has definitely experienced a noteworthy revival outside of the traditional texas scene in the past year or two. Even people who arent releasing explicitly C&S music are still very clearly tapping into the aesthetic (ASAP rocky, the Weeknd) which has kind of led to it becoming the "it" thing among the internet rap scene.
90s southern rap nostalgia as a whole has been at its peak for a while now. Spaceghost Purrp, Big KRIT, and tons of other lesser knowns have been jumping back to a decade ago to find there own sound. i feel like it's often detrimental for some artists (KRIT) because they use it as a crutch more than as an influence. I like hearing somebody talk about swisher sweets and big body cars over some bluesy guitar as much as the next guy, but ultimately if you fail to actually write good songs then no amount of Pimp C shout outs can really save you.

Apologies for not responding to this sooner. I definitely agree with everything you said though Joey brother. I've been quite a fan of southern rap since I was a kid (Asko's probably fed up of all the southern songs I've sent him in the past!), but upon discovering Chopped and Screwed thanks to Big Moe, I've been in love with the sub-genre since.
In a society where we are moving so frenetically on a daily basis, I believe that C&S music is just as relevant now, if not more so, than it has ever been as a result. It encourages us to kick back, relax and really savour each song. Not to mention it's wonderful to see DJ Screw finally receiving the worldwide praise and credit he's so very much deserving of - there's not many who could do what he did back then, and even up to this very day. I'm just listening to a Big Moe tribute at the moment from some of the Screwed Up Click (S.U.C.):

I was about to post this nice little freestyle session in the 'What are you listening to?' thread, but remembered my previous post in here was related to the Screwed Up Click, so that I'd continue that trend of probably my favourite group from the south (yes, I enjoy them even more so than the great OutKast):

I'm just listening to this right now, of which I first heard thanks to the "Screwed In Houston" documentary. The song is beautiful. Is it just me, or does it also sound like it would be incredibly appropriate and fitting on Dr. Dre's "Chronic 2001" album...

Earl Sweatshirt coming with something a little different to what we're used to from him - can't get enough of this at the mo. This guy's so sick - so many intricate schemes & multisyllabics, reminds me a bit of Em back in the day. Good to see him living up to his potential. Definitely the best thing to come out of Odd Future, imo.

To me the pick of the bunch is Frank, but Earl's the most interesting emcee of the Wolf Gang, I can agree. His verse on Super Rich Kids was also mint, fit the "complacent-swimming-in-so-much-money-that-nothing-really-gives-a-kick" bill just perfectly.

When I watched Chum the other day (courtesy of World Star), I instantly loved the song. There's just a gritty, almost sinister aura radiating from the the song and video. I usually find it difficult to listen to Odd Future, primarily because of the negativity and overly extreme thoughts put forward. It makes them hard to listen to for prolonged periods of time as 'unwinding' to it seems almost impossible. Solid video post though Keyser.
I'm just listening to Chief Keef's "Love Sosa" track after being given the Slim K Slowdown treatment. It works really well with the song I think, but then again, Slim K can seemingly make any song sound excellent.

On another note, it looks like Chief Keef could very well be heading to prison in a matter of weeks. He's apparently violated his probation stemming from an incident last December when 16 years old, in which he drew his gun on a police officer  Since then, he's appeared on camera a few times wielding firearms, including a machine gun. Safe to say, that's probably sufficient evidence to lock him up, so at the moment, he's looking set to have a poor Christmas! Lesson learned hopefully.

Ah, Frank Ocean is really nice - haven't gave that guy a bump in a while actually. Tyler's really talented too; his production is well on point.

Definitely agree on the video, that eery vibe suits them down to the ground. Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of them either - I can appreciate what they do though, and they've definitely coined a prominent style of their own. Technically/lyrically though, Earl Sweatshirt is a beast. If he gets into his stride, I think he could be up there with the best out there.
Has there been any posts on 'Good Kid M.A.A.D City' yet? Really well constructed album; Kendrick's one of my favourites, man. His discography is looking very nice right now.
edit: just seen Mjällharth mentioned it further up. Very intricate, for sure. Like Section.80, I could still listen to it the whole way through and catch something I didn't before, it proper resonates. Really fucking good.

I do love a bit of ratchetness when it comes to Hip Hop. I think I appreciate a fine balance of more thought provoking music, and ratchet music that you can just bob your head to.
I find it difficult to resent someone like Chief Keef, purely because he obviously knows no better - I just can't dislike someone for it. I assume you mean his music for the most part, as opposed to him as a person though. Sure, Chief Keef is undeniably ignorant, which is reflected within his music, but at the same time, I find many of his songs catchy. As I say, it's that balance between good and ratchet that I most enjoy.

I can understand (and appreciate, on occasion) provoking aspects in one's persona and body of work; I suppose I can only really say that there's provoking and then there's - you guessed it - provoking. He just comes across as a huge cunt.

Thanks Mjällharth for furthering the discussions within this thread, even if the opinions of those involved differ greatly. It still often provides alternative perspectives, thoughts upon new mixtapes/album releases.

I can understand the viewpoint that Chief Keef comes across as a bad person a lot of the time, but he's the epitome of a youngster raised within a hellhole of a city. This shows through his attitude and Drill approach to his music. Which is why as I say, I find it difficult to dislike him, because of his surrounding environment whilst growing up - something of which undeniably shapes a person's character and demeanor. Perhaps more so than enjoying his music, I find the process in which has made him the person he is today; fascinating.
Ultimately, if it wasn't going to be Chief Keef, it was going to be a Lil Reese, Lil Durk, King Louie or Lil Mouse. It's purely a representation of what has been - and still is - occurring on a frighteningly frequent basis. They're all reporting upon their environment, with Keef being labelled as the voice of his generation, which goes some way in identifying the chaotic nature of Chicago's south side, aka Chiraq.
I agree that a lot of the Drill and Trap music seems to glorify the 'gang life', but I still find it difficult to despise someone who perhaps knows no better. A portion of this growth in violent activity within Chicago's south side should be attributed to the parent(s)) as they have the responsibility of protecting their children - something of which many have clearly failed.
I just don't get this slowing tempo's on track's down. 99% of the time it's absolute garbage when it's done. Hopefully the tempo keeps slowing down and it dies off.
We're living in such a fast paced environment, that it's often pleasant and enjoyable to 'chop and screw' a record, whilst lowering the tempo in order to fully appreciate and capture the the assessment
PS: This song/video is for you Mak brother - it's mpt [articulary slowed down, just merely mellow and relaxing. I believe I even posted it up in the chatbox

I tend to lean towards liking the work of those who hail from the ghetto yet manage to overcome the fact they're living in a Mordor of sorts (a plethora of New York rappers could fit here I'd say). But yeah, to each their own. I did listen to Laughing to the Bank and it was amusing as hell, even if possibly unintentionally, so yeah, there's a good side to it

Cuban Linx really is one of the greatest rap albums of all time. Cinematic, kickstarted the whole mafioso rap movement Jay-Z, AZ, Nas, Biggie picked up (yes, Kool G Rap and Scarface did it before but he set the blueprint imo). Also a great album with a worthy sequel, how rare is that! Ha.
Received Game's "Jesus Piece" album for Christmas, so will be looking forward to giving it a listen either tonight or tomorrow sometime. It's no secret I've always been a fan of The Game, given his hard-hitting content, yet often vulnerable demeanor. There aren't many artists within the gangsta rap genre who share their weaknesses and soft side with the rest of the world, yet Game does, and it helps him to be viewed as a 'human' I believe of which people can identify with, as opposed to a flawless system-like machine. He wears his heart on his sleeve, and his emotions always seem to rise to the surface, often to boiling point, but that's what makes him more endearing to me.
As far as ability goes as well, I think over the years he's been heavily influenced by those around him in terms of his rapping style, and this is evident from the changes in his voice and delivery. Ultimately though, there is one particular aspect in which Game excels I think, and that is flow. He really is nice when it comes to flowing, and is more than convincing when aggression is laid onto a song.
Anyway, as usual, I never really listen to leaked albums, so from this new release, I've heard I believe just one song. I'm yet to hear the album, but I'm disappointed the song "Holy Water" isn't on there, as it is quite excellent, with the production being incredibly strong.

Has anyone else heard Jesus Piece yet, and if so, what are your thoughts? If not, what are your thoughts in general on Game as an artist/entertainer etc...

Albums leak all of the time, usually well in advance of course, especially since the switch to a reliance upon technology.
I was merely stating that when I'm a fan of a particular artist, the chances are, I will continue to buy their albums. Now, given I know I'll be either buying the CD or receiving it as a gift, I usually opt to not spoil it, and rather listen to it all via the CD album itself. It's part of the overall 'experience'.

In my opinion, Game still couldn't get back on the right track in the sense that JP is his second album in a row that has some moments of greatness but is weighed down by some absolute bollocks. Good tracks are more dominant in quantity though, as opposed to R.E.D., so that is a positive.

I'm yet to actually listen to Jesus Piece, but on the note of The R.E.D. Album, I thought for the most part, it was solid. I'm quite positive you were even impressed upon listening to it following its release.
I would say the good songs outweigh the bad, and there's also a few great tracks on R.E.D. Some of the songs I'd consider genuine highlights would definitely include the likes of; Ricky, The City, Martians vs. Goblins, Born in the Trap, The Good The Bad and The Ugly, and even Red Nation, Pot of Gold and California Dream.
Sure the skits are unnecessary, and a good 5-6 songs feel like filler, but overall, I'd say 2/3rds of the album is good with some standout tracks.
Anyway, I'm just listening to this at the moment, and thought I might as well post it up:

I was impressed by the songs that were good, yes, but delivering an album that's a quality work of art seems to be out of his grasp for a good while now. He's a pale shadow of the man who did The Documentary and Doctor's Advocate. Of course, as I said, he drops a lot of pretty good tracks as well, so he's aaight in a way, but I just have much more admiration for artists who can drop focused products.

True. Like Lupe Fiasco and "Lasers".
We all know there's more at play than just an artist's choice, sure big hitters get a strong say in what happens, but when you're working with major labels, then there's usually a compromise of sorts - probably one of the reasons why mixtapes are still so important.

It's just who he is really, a passionate artist who isn't afraid to share his heartfelt emotions. That in itself is quite an accomplishment and I believe demonstrates just how far we've come as a Hip Hop community - to the point where a lot of artists are obviously now more secure with themselves and who they are, which is quite wonderful.
Anyway, just been listening to this song for the first time in years, thought I'd throw it up in here for the sake of it. It's always worth a listen:

Brief thoughts on your Top 50 releases in 2012 Mjällharth :
• Joey Bada$$, in at number 39 with his “1999” – this is a release I really enjoyed, so surprised it didn't chart slightly higher.
• It’s good to see Action Bronson’s “Blue Chips” charting respectively at 36. I think you were spot on referencing Bronson’s work as a heavily influenced 90s New York music scene backdrop. When listening to Blue Chips, and other Bronson records, it feels as if you’ve warped the time-space continuum, a nice feeling at that in a way.
• I myself have been sceptical with Lupe Fiasco’s “Food & Liquor II”, as I think most are when the titles of the albums are simply considered to be a follow on from what is usually a previous classic, as if a plot to push marketing and promotion. I’ve not listened to the album yet – given my doubts as I said, but based upon your review, I think I’ll go out of my way to give it a solid listen through.
• Seeing Big KRIT’s “4 Eva N a Day” and “Live from the Underground” so highly regarded by yourself is no surprise, since I believe you recommended him to me originally, and for that I’m really appreciative. I’ve been listening to Big KRIT regularly since then, so a big thumbs up brother. I have to agree that from the top 50 list, from those that I’ve listened to, Big KRIT is an artist who would rank highly also for me.
• From reading through the descriptions of several of the albums/mixtapes given that I’ve not heard of, one that perhaps intrigues me most is THEESatisfaction’s “awE naturalE”, so that’ll be given a full play through thanks to YouTube.
• “good kid, m.A.A.d city” being at number 1 is something that I simply can’t disagree with. I enjoyed Section 80, but felt ultimately that it was quite overrated – but that could simply be due to the hype that surrounded him as it dropped. With his latest effort though, it exceeded my expectations to be honest. It’s great to see Kendrick flourishing, demonstrated by the string of hits breleased from the “good kid, m.A.A.d city” album – alongside videos for these singles which just helps accentuate the story painted by Kendrick for his work on this album.
• Overall, from the pieces that I’ve heard from the list, which is probably around 50-60% now, in terms of placement, I tend to actually agree with you on this. Further on the plus side, I feel like I’ve an additional reason to explore the other music releases, especially thanks to the overviews provided for each mixtape/album –as it allows me to opt for music to match my mood at any given time.
Great work Asko, I'd recommend all reading to give the list a read and share their own thoughts on it: http://www.theerraticnortherner.blogs pot.co.uk/2013/01/hip-hop-2012-retrospective.html
I'm just watching through this again, as it's been quite a while - but this time, I'm watching it in 1080p full screen.

Mjällharth - I think it could be quite interesting to see several of us collating our own lists of all time favourite albums from each region, so for example, a Top 5 list of our personally favourite albums/mixtapes from the east coast, south, mid-west and west coast. Hopefully you all see what I'm getting at! Or even some personal favourites from specific genres and sub-genres within Hip Hop.

Hunter why not! The mid-west would be a tad difficult though  (though if Chi-Town and/or Detroit would be included it'd be a whole lot easier!)
Thus far in 2013, three great projects:
ASAP Rocky - Long.Live.A$AP
Czarface - Czarface
Yelawolf - Trunk Muzik Returns
(just felt like mentioning these)

Is it just me, or is Kanye West becoming more and more of a music 'icon' as each year or so passes? He pushes the boundaries and seems to have such uniquely distinct and special qualities.

I'm getting sick of it. Like, no one cares about the shit he raps about these days.
