Pac never crafted a top 25 album, none of his albums displayed the type of consistency and cohesion that most of the albums on that list have.
The list I feel overrates both ATCQ albums and it missed out on a few musts, particularly AZ's Doe or Die and Gang Starr's Moment of Truth. I'd also put The Infamous up a few spots. Can't disagree with #1 though.

Has anyone looked into The Coup or Brother Ali?
The Coup are quality. Brother Ali's Shadows On The Sun is pretty good, too. Haven't heard his new one.

I know Outkast were good hip-hop artists...my point is, that they've sold out... I mean come on they dress up like complete tits in some of their songs now and dance about (Hey Ya for example). It's not the 1st time on this thread someone would be discarded as a 'good rapper' for this sort of stuff.

One of the newest rappers to emerge on the underground and Hip Hop scence, Joell Ortiz. He resides from New York and just like most east coast emcees, he has good lyrical ability.
Just downloaded his album The brick. Solid production and definitely worth a listen.

Indeed, the remix is hot, especially Saigon's verse.
"Chicago Runs Shit" is not just an opinion anymore. Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco and Pharrell have joined up to form a new super-group named exactly that. Lupe and Kanye both call Chicago home while Pharrell is a Virginia Beach native himself. A more fitting group of Chicago artists might have been Common, Lupe and Kanye. Regardless, the group (which isn't about fashion) is quite possibly the top secret project Lupe Fiasco referred to in an interview with Billboard magazine earlier this month.
In that interview, Lupe was said to be working on a "top secret project" with "another superstar rapper and someone who is a rapper/producer." It was not revealed whether or not this would be for an entire album or just a few songs.
The 'CRS' group was revealed over the weekend when details surrounding the "Can't Tell Me Nothing" mixtape were released. The first song the group released is the track "Us Placers" which uses a sample off of Thom Yorke's (of the group Radiohead) "The Erasers."

Was going to come out everywhere around the same time anyway. It'll just be pushed back so he can actually release some good singles to create a buzz because the 3 he's released so far have been dog-shite and created zero radio buzz. He has no choice but to push it back, and make more singles in order to succeed.

My apologies, thought you were allowed, especially with the several references to download threads in the Elite section lately. I just believed that the PES series wasn't to be posted, meh. Still, can't afford £5 for a membership and I highly doubt anyone in the Veteran area will appreciate such music taste. Anywho, you downloaded them before deleting them didn't you ? By JANA WINTER, TOM LIDDY and ANDY GELLER
June 12, 2007 -- An up-and-coming rapper was ambushed and killed yesterday when he returned to his Queens housing project after a night of clubbing in Manhattan, cops said.
Rayquon Elliott, 25, who went by the name "Stack Bundles," was shot in the head and neck by two men in the lobby of one of the Redfern Houses buildings in Far Rockaway at 5 a.m., cops said.
He died a half-hour later at Jamaica Hospital.
Police and a friend said Elliott partied at the Chelsea club Stereo until 4 a.m., then stopped at a White Castle with a pal, Wanique Washington, before going home.
Elliott had just dropped off Washington at his building when he was shot.
"They shot him! They shot him!" Washington screamed after running back to his friend and calling 911.
Elliot always wore a gold chain with a black skull medallion. Both are missing, police sources said.
He began rapping eight years ago, said Brian Wilson, who just released a CD with Elliott called "Riot or Die" on Bird Gang Records, a unit of Diplomat Records.
"It's jealousy. It's a hate thing," Wilson said of the slaying. "
Elliott's aunt Davida Wooten, 40, said the word "Stack" in her nephew's rap name was his father's nickname, and the word "Bundles" referred to the fact he was his parents' bundle of joy.

Budden's been raping the mixtape circuit with some real classics. He's got so much talent and could easily become a quality rapper if given the chance and promotion. People simply see Budden as the "Pump It Up" man, but anyone with an ear realises that he's far greater than that, and he shouldn't have to release such club hits. Mood Muzik 2 is arguably the best mixtape released in the last 5-10 years and some of the songs on it, I've been playing back every other day for many many months.

That's faker than Milli Vanilli. According to Porter in the group, Eminem hasn't even spoken to them for months, let alone helped create an album. Apparently D12 have pretty much finished a CD, they're just waiting for Eminem to actually throw in some input.

Do any of you actually listen to proper rap?
I'm talking about real mutherfuckers like Immortal Technique, Ill Bill, Sabac Red and the Jedi Mind Tricks clique. (AOTP and Outerspace).
JMT do spit a lot of crazy shit - particularly Vinnie Paz - but Stoupe's production is by far one of the best out there and the guy doesn't even get any props from the industry. Not that he gives a shit, i'm sure.
Has anyone here heard any Papoose tracks? That A to Z track is incredible.

Depends as people define "real" or "proper" rap very differently. But I do enjoy a bit of Immortal Technique, although he needs to brush up on his flow. Vinnie Paz is great too, I don't think he's that underated amongst the internet but in terms of the actual circuit I'd say so.
But if you class "proper" rap as just underground then I'd have to disagree.
Papoose's "Alphabetical Slaughter" is quality, not as good as the Blackalicious version though I don't think but still.

That was what he did when Kay Slay gave him his chance on the air, live.
Like i've said before Immortal Technique as " Real " as he is, is boring to listen to and has a truely ugly flow. Common is a nicely rounded version of Immortal Technique IMO.
JMT are tight though no doubt.
  @ "proper rap." Immortal Technique is still nothing special, JMT are good though, mostly due to Stoupe's production. There are plenty of better underground rappers than Paz, though.
What i mean with proper rap is just that the ones i mention tend to spit about real shit, not just clubbing, thuggin' and pimping. Many of them cunts that get so much exposure because they've met the right people, have undeniably good skills in some area or another, but they still talk about silly shit, IMO.
As for Immortal Technique, i do agree that he is one dimensional and does not deliver like R.A The Ruggedman, but he speaks truth and wisdom, most of the time, and his lyrics are always good and on point.
He may not have an amazing flow, but i respect the fact that he tries to enlighten people. Plus, his man's production, Domingo, is fucking great. Listen to tracks like The Cause of Death, Crossing The Boundary and Peruvian Cocaine and then come and tell me that he is boring.
  @ "proper rap." Immortal Technique is still nothing special, JMT are good though, mostly due to Stoupe's production.
I like Paz's aggressiveness but, as you say, it's Stoupe's brilliance that makes them shine. He is by far my favorite producer.
There are plenty of better underground rappers than Paz, though.
I want names. If they are good then i must listen, but they better not be talking about hoes and bling bling.

I want names. If they are good then i must listen, but they better not be talking about hoes and bling bling.
I hear what you're saying, hearing that does get boring. What do you wanna hear about though?
If you're interested in checking out any of the artists I listed here's their best albums IMO.
OneBeLo - SONOGRAM
Sean Price - Monkey Barz
Buckshot - Chemistry
Killah Priest - Heavy Mental
Murs - Murs 3:16 The 9th Edition
Brother Ali - Shadows on the Sun
Jeru The Damaja - The Sun Rises In the East (classic album, highly recommended.)
AZ - Doe Or Die (also classic)
I hear what you're saying, hearing that does get boring. What do you wanna hear about though?
I wanna hear about current world affairs, revolutionary rap and militant-down-with-the-system-and-The New World Order-shit.
I wanna hear about real problems, oppression, and tracks that talk about obscure historical facts that have been covered and turned into lies and taught to our youth as truth. I want to hear about the truth and, i want it to sound good as well.
Here's an example of what i like:
Immortal Technique - Cause of Death
[Talking]
Immortal Technique
Revolutionary Volume 2
Yeah, broadcasting live from Harlem, New York
Let the truth be known..
[Verse 1]
You better watch what the fuck flies outta ya mouth
Or I'ma hijack a plane and fly it into your house
Burn your apartment with your family tied to the couch
And slit your throat, so when you scream, only blood comes out
I doubt that there could ever be...a more wicked MC
'Cuz AIDs infested child molesters aren't sicker than me
I see the world for what it is, beyond the white and the black
The way the government downplays historical facts
'Cuz the United States sponsored the rise of the 3rd Reich
Just like the CIA trained terrorists to the fight
Build bombs and sneak box cutters onto a flight
When I was a child, the Devil himself bought me a mic
But I refused the offer, 'cuz God sent me to strike
With skills unused like fallopian tubes on a dyke
My words'll expose George Bush and Bin Laden
As two separate parts of the same seven headed dragon
And you can't fathom the truth, so you don't hear me
You think illuminati's just a fuckin conspiracy theory?
That's why Conservative racists are all runnin' shit
And your phone is tapped by the Federal Government
So I'm jammin' frequencies in ya brain when you speak to me
Technique will rip a rapper to pieces indecently
Pack weapons illegally, because I'm never hesitant
Sniper scoping a commission controllin the president
[Hook]
Father, forgive them, for they don't know right from wrong
The truth will set you free, written down in this song
And the song has the Cause of Death written in code
The Word of God brought to life, that'll save ya soul..
Save ya soul motherfucker...save ya soul..
Yeah, yeah, yeah
[Verse 2]
I hacked the Pentagon for self-incriminating evidence
Of Republican manufactured white powder pestilence
Marines Corps. flack vest, with the guns and ammo
Spittin' bars like a demon stuck inside a piano
Turn a Sambo into a soldier with just one line
Now here's the truth about the system that'll fuck up your mind
They gave Al Qaida 6 billion dollars in 1989 to 1992
And now the last chapters of Revelations are coming true
And I know a lot of people find it hard to swallow this
Because subliminal bigotry makes you hate my politics
But you act like America wouldn't destroy two buildings
In a country that was sponsoring bombs dropped on our children
I was watching the Towers, and though I wasn't the closest
I saw them crumble to the Earth like they was full of explosives
And they thought nobody noticed the news report that they did
About the bombs planted on the George Washington bridge
Four Non-Arabs arrested during the emergency
And then it disappeared from the news permanently
They dubbed a tape of Osama, and they said it was proof
"Jealous of our freedom," I can't believe you bought that excuse
Rockin a motherfucking flag don't make you a hero
Word to Ground Zero
The Devil crept into Heaven, God overslept on the 7th
The New World Order was born on September 11
[Hook]
[Verse 3]
And just so Conservatives don't take it to heart
I don't think Bush did it, 'cuz he isn't that smart
He's just a stupid puppet taking orders on his cell phone
From the same people that sabotaged Senator Wellstone
The military industry got it poppin' and lockin'
Looking for a way to justify the Wolfowitz Doctrine
And as a matter of fact, Rumsfeld, now that I think back
Without 9/11, you couldn't have a war in Iraq
Or a Defense budget of world conquest proportions
Kill freedom of speech and revoke the right to abortions
Tax cut extortion, a blessing to the wealthy and wicked
But you still have to answer to the Armageddon you scripted
And Dick Cheney, you fuckin leech, tell them your plans
About building your pipelines through Afghanistan
And how Israeli troops trained the Taliban in Pakistan
You might have some house niggaz fooled, but I understand
Colonialism is sponsored by corporations
That's why Halliburton gets paid to rebuild nations
Tell me the truth, I don't scare into paralysis
I know the CIA saw Bin Laden on dialysis
In '98 when he was Top Ten for the FBI
Government ties is really why the Government lies
Read it yourself instead of asking the Government why
'Cuz then the Cause of Death will cause the propaganda to die..
[Man talking]
He is scheduled for 60 Minutes next. He is going on
French, Italian, Japanese television. People
everywhere are starting to listen to him. It's embarassing

Muad, I know it's not American rap but there's some UK stuff you might like going by this. To dig out an old post of mine:
New World Order consists of Lowkey (Poisonous Poets) and Logic (Poverty Driven Children). Sorry if you are a Hip Hop fan and don't appreciate what they're trying to do then you're just ignorant or stupid.
UK Hip Hop is making moves, but this type of thing is on a whole different level.

so you like being preached to in rap? (thats not me taking a dig btw Im just asking)
so you like being preached to in rap? (thats not me taking a dig btw Im just asking)
I like listening to good production and rappers who spit about knowledge, politics and righteousness. What does it have to do with me liking to be preached at?
I like to bob my head listening to mutherfuckers rhyme about how governments are raping us all, and that we should invest our energy in healing the planet instead of going clubbing, spending money on bitches, drugs, cars and jewelry.
Preached at, you say? Technically, them 'gangstas' are 'preaching' as well.

Everyone has different opinions on rap, I reckon most people in here would like to think they're more into 'real' rap. I also don't mind this, listening to people like Common from time to time is very refreshing. But I also like listening to the 'club bangers' - some 50 Cent, The Game, Jim Jones etc.
I'm the best rapper on earth. youtube "mark in da park" to see my rhymes, yo.

Jeru the Damaja.
*gets down on one knee and prays*
The Sun Rises is a classic indeed.Come Clean and Ain't The Devil Happy are my favourites:
"As devils search for the secrets to immortality
I alter my physical chemistry
Walk through the valley of the shadow of death
I exist even when no things are left
Vibrations transcend space and time
Pure at heart because I deal with the mind
That's why I compose these verses
Audible worlds, my thoughts are now universes
Written on these pages is the ageless
wisdom of the sages, ignorance is contagious
So I hope you keep your focus
There's no hocus-pocus, in the end, it's just us
Devil got brother killin brother, it's insane
Goin out like Abel and Cain
Wisen up and use your brain
There'll be no limit, to the things that you can gain
In positivity, balance it with negativity
Until then, ain't the devil happy"
I like that mysticism in rap.

Yea I was expecting that, I know Jim Jones can't rap... but a couple of his songs are alright in terms of a decent beat and listenable-especially in a club or that. Eg. We Fly High, Pin The Tail, and Summer Wit' Miami isn't bad either.
For anyone who is interested in old school hip-hop, check out DJ Kool Kids new mixtape.

Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt

Nice, both in my top 10 favorite hip-hop albums.
Okay here is another set for anyone who is into old school hip-hop from the 90s.
It’s a rip from funk flex july 4th radio show, where he plays all the classic joints from the 90s. I’ve had this mp3 for a few days now and it’s a really good listen! I recommend this to anybody who like to be enlightened with some old school hip-hop.
You can download it from DJ Strech Armstrongs site here http://konstantkontakt.blogspot.com/2007/07/90s-flashback-with-funkmaster-flex.html

Dead Prez - Hell Yeah, Get Up
Atmosphere - (Can't think of any at the moment)
The Coup - Favorite Mutiny, 5 Million Ways to Kill a CEO, Ride the Fence, Ghetto Manifesto

Worked for two years in a job, got what to show?
Twenty years of life experience and no dough
A slow flow, I'm rugged with no hopes
A gullet with no tokes, no money for po' smokes
Bun it I'm so broke, it's no joke
Stiflin' depression 'cause durin' a session my bones croak
An average-Joe bloke, sick with the shame
Not a quid to my name, you don't know what I'd give for a change
Or give for some change, and maybe a score note
I'm raw broke, without change? Never score no poke
My lyrics? They're big, clever and so dope
My critics? Take digs say there ain't never no hope
But the flow provokes me to cope and show scope
My mind's full of thoughts that are blacker than crow's coats
My lines kick like the sound on first and fifth notes
So spare me the snares and your quote unquotes
I live on an island they named frustration
Where pellets of pain rain keep pelting the pavements
I hustle among the grim reaper's gang of gravesmen
The stained terrain echoes these insane statements
It makes minds redundant
There's a strong presence of emptiness in abundance
But bun this
I put pens to beats as I know I can shun this
I don't rely on the sun's kiss
This is a point that even the nuns miss
I access my own avenues and pathways
And in the sun's rays I raise my own Carthage
My arms rage at the sight of others the same
Who wish to behold that heroic fame
And when they're slain at an early age? "Just some brother"
Who left behind some hopes, some sins, some friends - and one mother
That is all.
sounds like something Pharoahe Monch would spit.

To answer the questions - yes, I do produce music. I make beats in my spare time, as a hobby - but I haven't had much of that time in which to do it in months.
I've always written lyrics as well, but again - haven't had time/not been feeling creative in months. Finally had a chance this weekend, and so got something done. I've rearranged my room this afternoon (and given it a lick of serene green) to try and inspire myself out of this creative lull.
But no, I haven't recorded anything in about two years.

I've tried both and they both function a bit differently, but (and this seems to be general opinion as well, not just me) they're both about level in functionality and it really just comes down to personal preference. There's trials available of both on the net i'm sure

Fruity Loops is the best for beginners
I'd say that's a common misconception. FLStudio looks like it should be the best for beginners, because you can get a sound out of it relatively easily - but to actually do something that sounds even remotely listenable, you need to invest hours upon hours learning the program.
I've always used Fruity Loops, and for two years I didn't really "learn" the program. Now, I can do everything I need to within FLStudio (although I do use Audacity for wave editing, there is actually a wave editor that does the job in FL) - and, as I've become accustomed to the interface in FL, I find my way around it extremely well.
I do also know how to use Cubase and Reason, as well as Logic to a lesser extent, and (as Joey rightly pointed out) in terms of functionality they're all virtually identical. You can give a Llada a Ferrari paint-job, but it's still a Llada.
The truth is, to make good beats, you need to be creative above everything else. The technical side you can learn (although be warned, this is not something you can learn overnight - whichever program you use, you'll be investing hours figuring stuff out), and realistically the majority of your "work" will be done in your mind - what it comes down to is which interface allows you to transmit your thoughts into tangible results the most efficiently. FL Studio, for me, is the simplest of the interfaces - and, as such, is considered the "easiest" to use, and I think that at a push it's easier to get by in FL Studio using only the first layer of features than perhaps the other programs.
Music-making can be an expensive hobby, just so you know. I'd recommend picking yourself up a MIDI keyboard/controller at the very least - as without one of these you're not actually "making" music - simply programming it.

Yes, but those can be very expensive.
Question:
AOTP - Gorillas or Sabac Red - Urban Gorillas?
They both feature Vinnie Paz.
That's the kind of production that i like and will be aiming to create.
Nifty1Pound50

They can be, but you can pick up a real basic one for about £20-40. Just a 25-key controller with about 8-12 knobs on it, it will have a pitch and a modulation wheel.
The beauty of FLStudio is that it comes with a little add-on called the FPC - which is like a virtual MPC drum machine, which allows you to program any sample you have to any key on your controller. Inside of FL you can then program any function to any of your keyboard controller's knobs, as well as programming the modulation wheel to control a further more advanced control, giving you endless combinations on what is a cheap piece of equipment.
I mean, yes - you can buy a proper Korg Triton for £1,500 which comes with some super sounds and everything already pre-programmed, but then you can download all the sounds you need (or even sample with a microphone or create from scratch yourself) and then assign them to your £20 keyboard. More work, but same result. Especially once you learn how to master your levels and add effects "live" as it were (yet more assigning of functions to buttons/knobs/wheels) - and you can't tell the difference between the sound quality. It's all about the sounds you use, and how you use them - not what you use them on. The only thing I spent money on in my production set-up was the speakers - as the true sound can't be emulated with programming (obviously).
As for what kind of production - it matters not. You can produce whatever's in you in any of the sequencers.
can do everything I need to within FLStudio (although I do use Audacity for wave editing, there is actually a wave editor that does the job in FL)
Do you have FL Studio 7? I used to use Adobe Audition for the same reason you use Audacity, but the inclusion of Edison (the new FL wave editor) IMO makes things much simpler.
Nifty1Pound50

I do have FL7, I simply prefer the Audacity interface.
It just marginalises the time I spend clicking, which maximises the time I spend producing - and for me, in such a spontaneous past-time, this is vital.
My latest technique is to get all the hits/samples I wish, put them together in Audacity (with a bit of silence after each), and then send them to the slicer. Then, if I have to, I define the slices and voila! I got an MPC2K on my keyboard.
More importantly, Talib Kweli's "Eardrum" drops today. It's fire. Go get it.
Been waiting for that for quite a while now. It wasn't there today in the shops, damn it. Anyone had a listen of Common's Finding Forever? Not much publicity around it here so far.

Lol but they had an arguement who would sell more and they both decided to sell their albums on 9/11 for some strange reason
just out of curiosity, who has sold more currently 50 cent or kanye west
So far, Kanye West.
They're overrated cunts.
Not really, I mean, 50 Cent may be in the spotlight a lot but it's not usually for the right reasons. Many knew his Massacre album was a shambles, and he doesn't get much credit for making music nowadays anyway. He's still an average rapper, but just with an awesome business mind.
As for Kanye, calling him overated is like calling Elton John straight. Doesn't work. Kanye West is bringing something new to the table with every album he releases, and every album he's released includes flawless production. He helped mould one of the greatest Rap albums ever (Common - Be) and his creativity is above nearly any other artists today. He may not have the lyrical ability and flow of Mos Def or Talib Kweli but all his attributes combined make up for that. He's an unbelievable musician, entertainer and has gave Hip Hop mouth-to-mouth in recent years.
Finding Forever is a disappointment, a few good songs, but too many too-corny-for-even-Common-to-pull-off songs.
And no one knows who'd sold more yet, I know on amazon.com Kanye is outselling 50 by 70-30.
edit- btw, Kanye is the most interesting figure in mainstream music in a loooooooonnnnnggggg time.

Finding Forever was a solid album, but it was never going to touch "Be", I guess it's the same scenario as Nas and his hype of "Illmatic" which he'll never exceed.
But yeah, Kanye has sold more so far, according to reports from all over America.
Kanye easily outsold 50.

I've been waiting for a new Joe Budden (not with a s at the end) album for about 3 years now.
Buddens is an immense rapper on his day, I'm still trying to get hold of Mood Muzik 2. I had The Growth before, rare and all, but I can't find it anymore, so I'm rather devastated. But I think everyone is anticipating a Joe Budden album, I could see him selling well, but obviously nothing in comparison to the likes of Kanye West etc. He's probably just best leaving the label as he's not going to get much of a free budget or momentum at his current one.
Long time no see  if you remember me lol
Chamillionaire's album is brillant by the way, ashame it ONLY sold 20,000 units in its 1st week :realmad:
He shouldn't of released it a week after 50 and Kanye, also Hip Hop Police isn't 1st single material.
O'well
I prefer chammionalires album to 50's and kanyes, still his album will do well.
20,000 not good enough first week.
Sorry, he sold 79,000 not 20K, my mistake.
Thats still very poor though.
Chamillionaire's album over Kanye's? No fucking way.
I think Kanye's album has been the best in 2007, but Chamillionaire's is defiantly up there in the top 5. Its just ashame that the record sales wont reflect the quality of the album.
1. Kanye West - Graduation
2. T.I. - TI Vs TIP
3. Common - Finding Forever
4. Chamillionaire - Ultimate Victory
5. Talib Kweli - Ear Drum

I liked Be, but it's not even Common's best album, Resurrection is a league above it.
I liked Be, but it's not even Common's best album, Resurrection is a league above it.
I'd have to disagree, whilst I like Resurrection, I just think Be is more consistant and solid. With production from Kanye, the partnership works wonders on the album, and Kanye probably produced some of his best beats to date.
Common himself said BE is his best album.
Meh, Jimmy Page thought Presence was their best as well, I can only firmly disagree. Not a great Common fan though so I cannot judge properly.
For a short album Be had too much filler. Testify, Go!, Real People, and They Say are all skippable and Love Is... is just cringeworthy.
wrigh2uk
28-09-2007, 14:56
I believe BE was better for the fact that it was realeased in the era of music were you cannot put out a hardcore rap album on a major label.
Resurrection was in that area where figures weren't important. Now you have the pressure of moving big numbers, appealing to different people, making money etc..
So for Common to do BE and have it as succesful as it was without selling out etc, i think it such a hard thing to do.
Even Nas's has watered down his style. Common's style might not be as raw as it once was, but lyrically hes still on that near untouchable level.
I'll PM you the link to get Mood Musik 2 in good quality.

Indeed. HHNF was without doubt one of the best albums released in the past few years.
Sorry, he sold 79,000 not 20K, my mistake.
Thats still very poor though.
Poor? Maybe. You have to remember that nowadays it's hard to sell many records due to the amount of illeagal downloading.

Some Of The best news all year
Rapper Joe Budden is no longer signed to Def Jam Records after being heralded as one of its most promising acts in the early 2000’s.
The rapper said he was pleased to be leaving the label and looked forward to the next steps in his career.
"I'm just happy we were finally able to cut all ties. I feel like I have all the talent in the world, but for some reason was never able to showcase it there,” Budden told AllHipHop.com. “I'm looking forward to whatever God has in store for me, and Joe Budden fans should know - today is a beautiful day."
While Budden’s self-titled 2003 album sold over 500,000 copies, he never released another album on the label. He also scored a hit record with “Pump It Up,” which was used in an NBA Campaign. In 2005, Def jam held a listening session for Budden's second release, The Growth, but the album never materialized.
Even without a second album in the market, Budden stayed relevant by releasing several popular mixtapes via the internet and the streets, most notably Mood Muzik 1 & 2.
Def Jam president Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter recently told AllHipHop.com that he wasn’t exactly sure how to release Budden as an artist.
“If you just want to throw an album out there then next week, [fine]… [Then] you’re recording [songs] about how we didn’t support it. We could do that,” Jay-Z said. “We could do that tomorrow. I don’t think that what he wants. I don’t think that what he needs. Maybe…I don’t know.”
Urban legends and gossipers speculated that a 2003 lyrical sparring session might have led Jay-Z, who eventually became Def Jam’s president, to harbor resentment against the younger rapper.
When Joe Budden’s “Pump It Up,” began to gain popularity in 2003, Jay-Z recorded his own version of the song, which began to get significant radio play. Shortly, Budden recorded a verse and added it on to Jay-Z’s. In each’s verse, it seemed like they were sending subtle lyrical jabs at each other.
Jay-Z insisted that notion was completely false and backed up his statement with present examples.
“That [lyrical sparring match] had never influenced my decisions. You see Beanie has a record with R. Kelly (one of his adversaries). Juelz Santana has put and album out. I’m way too big of a person to [do that]. I would never block anyone’s blessing, because of anything personal. If I didn’t want to deal with him, there’s other people there,” Jay-Z said. “I mean, why do we have a problem, I freestyled on his record. He probably made his career off of freestyling over other people’s records. If I start freestyling over other people’s records…Lord forbid.”
Joe Budden has yet to reveal his next move, but the third installment of the Mood Muzik series has been highly anticipated, especially on the internet.

This is not soo much aimed at you but I have to say I hate it when somone brings up the old argument about not being a real hip hop fan because you didn't listen or like the old schoolers.
Me myself I respect Rakim, and I know were his place in history is. But end of the day I've been brought up in 1996 era of hip hop. I find it hard to get past the awful beats of times past when I listen to an old school album. I love lyricalism but a it goes hand in hand with a nice beat. Bad beats ruins any track and just the opposite with lyrics..
I understand that beats were made to the best of abilties back in the day. If you were brought up back in the day I'm sure you have no probs with them , but im brought in in this day and age

you're not implying that the artists I just mentioned don't have excellent madskill beats do you? Try and find "They remenisce over you" by "Pete Rock and CL Smooth" on "Mecca and the Soul Brother"... Or "Nosebleed Section" by "Hilltopp Hoods" on "The Calling"
And it's not that I don't like any beats produced in the 20th century or anything:) Have to agree on Rakim by the way.
My problem is that many people who listen to *not getting too specific* the artists from today never try to see what else there is. It's a shame.

That's what I mean. That's bullcrap. As I mentioned, I just dont like people who think they're saying what they think they're saying wihout paying attention to what's out there... Which is a LOT!!! There are SOO many people who like hiphop (or what I like to call people who think they like hiphop) but would like it a LOT more when they've listened to the music I just mentioned or just have to admit they like a good beat and average lyrics. Everybody should listen to it, if they dont like it; ok, but be aware of providing your opionion with GOOD criticism.

In addition, it seems to be cool to be listening to Old Skool but to me it's more important to like the music. Like Aesop Rock's new album which isn't oldskool; it's innovative and it rocks :)

New Eminem Single "Pushin" in Jan,Album Due Early 08
It is actually hard to say which album fans are anticipating more, Detox or the label’s second album scheduled for release in early March. After rumors of retirement it seems Eminem has decided to step back in the booth with his fifth solo LP “Living Proof: The King Mathers LP.”
“Living Proof” will feature much heavier tones than Mather’s last outing, 2004’s “Encore” which left fans and the industry confused. Aftermath plans to release the albums first single “Pushin’” in January as well as the street single “King Mathers” featuring Eminem protégé Ca$his soon after. Following in the footsteps of Eminem's friend Nas, “Living Proof” is Eminem’s attempt to save his passion in the name of his fallen friend Proof.
A rare occurrence for Eminem, the album will also feature outside production from Scott Storch and J.R. Rotem as well as Eminem, the majority of the production ranks will be handled by Dr. Dre as well as the album’s first two singles.
Hope this is true. I was on a few websites.

Homicide detectives are now at the Mondrian Hotel investigating the death.
Pimp C, real name Chad Butler -- and one half of the rap duo UGK, was found dead in a hotel room this morning. He was 33.
L.A. County Fire responded to a 911 call at the Mondrian Hotel, located on trendy Sunset Strip in Hollywood. They arrived to his sixth floor hotel room to find him dead in bed.
UGK is best known for appearing on the Jay-Z track "Big Pimpin'" in 2000, and more recently with Outkast on the song "International Player's Anthem (I Choose You)." Pimp C had just performed with fellow rapper Too Short at the "House of Blues" in L.A. on Saturday night.

CAN SOMEONE PLEEEEEEASE get me this?! I had it along time ago but deleted it.
A very interesting piece from AllHipHop, should cause debate amongst everyone. It's the "20 Dopest Verses of All Time", I'd rather post the link as it's quite lengthy but for some reason it isn't working at the moment so I'll just quote the article.
How do you quantify dope? Is it the most lyrical? Is it the most emotionally raw? Is it the best delivered? Where does flow come in? How quantifiable is something so subjective? Sometimes a verse looks way better on paper than it does when you hear it. For this exercise, the dopest verse typically involves when an emcee abnormally blacks out on a verse. Sometimes it’s a highly lyrical performance. Sometimes it’s a relentless assault far beyond the walls of the 16 bar box. With such a list, you’d probably get a different 20 verses depending on the day of the week (we sure did). But we sat down and hammered out this list based on the first 20 that came to mind from each of us. Then we tallied up the ones with the most votes, and then battled continuously over which ones would be whittled down to the final list (in random order). Hate or love it, without further ado, AllHipHop.com’s 20 Dopest Verses of All Time!
“King of Rock”-Run DMC - King of Rock (1985)-First Stanza DMC Followed By Run
“I’m the King of Rock, There is None Higher!” Think about that. Yes there were 4 Beatles (Sorry Run). Only Jay could play an instrument, but the DJ aborted them as the group made a proclamation that would change the world and our lives forever. They didn’t wear costumes like most of the acts in the '80's. There weren’t even any non-MiJac Black people on MTV, much less Rap/Hip-Hop. The minimalist rock drums (You crazy for that one, Rick). The reverb on DMC's booming voice, copied by so many afterwards. The rush of those guitars that pretty much deaded any disco powered Hip-Hop related music. The power of DMC. The swagger of Run. It’s iconic. It’s everlasting. It’s the greatest verse of all time in our eyes.
“Winter Warz”-Ghostface - Killah Ironman (1996)-Cappadonna Verse
Before he was a cabdriver, Cappadonna was a serious contributor to both Only Built 4 Cuban Linx and Ironman. On "Winter Warz," he lost his mind and assaulted the pounding drum powered beat. Rhyming for over two minutes straight and seemingly out of nowhere as a cleanup hitter, 'Donna switched from the Stapleton lingo ("1-6-0 4-9-3-11") to the gutter and back. He doesn’t pause for a breath, he’s just relentless. He may not be on top of the overall emcee list, but Cappa’s "Winter Warz" verse is like Sleepy Floyd’s 53 Point NBA Playoff game: An all-time performance from a footnote player.
“Victory”-Puff Daddy & the Family - No Way Out (1997) Notorious B.I.G. 1st verse.
There are so many reasons why this verse is here. The last virtuoso performance of Biggie. The first salvo from a top selling, yet underrated album. Puffy’s suspense building intro combined with Rocky Balboa’s Championship pedigree, and then B.I.G.’s explosive abandonment of the slow flow that made him king. Arguably better than any verse on his last album, the power of the verse can be summed up in one stanza. “Warm nights I perform like Mike/Anyone, Tyson, Jordan, Jackson.” ‘Nuff said. We don’t know what’s on his tombstone, but no greater epitaph exists for his music career.
“Live At the BBQ” –Main Source - Breakin’ Atoms (1992) Nas Verse
The Streets Disciple was still nasty with no sign of Escobar. Just hearing it evokes a feeling of 40 oz’s, bodega heroes and blunts. Nas’ entry to our lives was full of the power of youth. Rich with imagery ("Shoot slugs from my brain just like a rifle") irreverence ("I went to hell for snuffin' Jesus") and young rage ("Nasty Nas is a rebel to America"), Nas was definitely causing hysteria. While Main Source was NOT forever, and Akinyele went from dropping rhymes to bumping rumps, Mr. Jones would go on to greater heights as arguably the premiere lyricist of his generation. This verse was his entry and calling card.
“The Headbanger”-EPMD - Business Never Personal (1992) Redman Verse
Rough, rugged, and raw. Politically incorrect (clowning cerebral palsy!) hood pop culture referential ("Lullaby your stupid ass - Rockabye baby - shout to Keisha from "New Jack City"), and just flat out bugged, Redman was as raw as it got for a lyricist in his era. The cherry on top of a hardcore chocolate sundae, the cleanup verse was frenetic, comical, violent, and everything about Hip-Hop in that era, complete with the metaphors and similes. Respect is due and this verse keeps collecting.
“The Message”-Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5 - The Message (1982) Grandmaster Melle Mel 1st Verse.
Post-Civil Rights. Post Disco. Product of Reaganomics. Urban. Gritty. “Broken glass everywhere, people pissing in the corners, yo they just don’t care.” Mel took us from the parties in the club and took it to the mud. Mirroring Stevie Wonder’s abandonment of Berry Gordy-flavored bubble gum, Mel took that disco rap and slammed it in the grime. Yeah, he yearned for the color TV to watch the Sugar Ray fight, but “The Message” was the truth from the mouth of the Grand Master. Not from the Klan, but representing the Clan. The Furious Five. The world would never be the same.
"Puffin on Blunts and Drankin’" Tanqueray-B-Side to Dr. Dre ‘F**k With Dre Day’ Single (1992) Kurupt Verse
It was supposed to be a throwaway record. 7 Minutes which began with Dre poppin off of a G-Funked up "Impeach the President." Nobody told that to the Dogg Pound. With apologies to Rage, who got the rhyme of the month when the bible was still sacred, Kurupt BLACKED OUT! Just relentless mic slaughter with wordplay, delivery, even spelling. It was brutal and unforgettable. It was Kurupt’s message to the East Coast: Death Row was for real on the mic. He edges Rage due to emotion and length, but the female lyrical murderer gets honorable mention for her own lyrical tornado on this.
“Raw”-Big Daddy Kane - Long Live The Kane (1988) 1st. Verse
You got a small taste of him on “Just Rhymin’ With Biz.” Cameo, Afro, Virgo, Domino. Well this verse on "Raw" brought another word virtuoso. Hardcore. That voice, so dominant. If you never saw Kane, you’d think he was 9 feet tall with the force of the terminator. Words were simultaneously smooth and rough. Subtle and powerful. Kane perfected both sides of the spectrum so well that the balancing act was in full effect. You got up and danced…cause Kane said so. The skill to ill and break and take. Long live the Kane.
“Straight Outta Compton”-N.W.A. - Straight Outta Compton (1989) Ice Cube
The shot heard around the world. ”When I’m called off, I got a sawed off, squeeze the trigger and bodies are hauled off.” There were others who were more outlandish, and others who were more authentic, but not many were more convincing. Ice Cube entertained and terrified those who were close enough to see, and enthralled those who were so far away they could only live vicariously through his verse. Down, with a capital CPT. This verse is the reason your parents hate rap music and is the progenitor of mainly everything we argue about concerning the life and death of Hip-Hop.
“The Symphony”-Marley Marl - In Control, Vol 1 (1988) (Kool G. Rap Verse)
Batting cleanup on a song with the Kane wasn’t easy but the Kool Genius delivered what many hail as the greatest verse of all time. Twice as horrifying as Vincent Price, D-evil (Before Hov) in a spell of a sleep, and while he’s counting his money you count sheep (Sleeping). It was verbal assault in its purest form. You couldn’t replace him , ice him or ace him. Base him face him slice him or race him. Indestructible on the microphone and rumors say he initially rhymed the verse until the tape reel popped. G rapped for so long the video had to cut a portion of his verse. The only rapper to have ever rendered Kane in his prime as anti-climactic on a track.
“Beast From The East”-The Lost Boyz - Love, Peace, & Happiness (1997) Canibus Verse
From nowhere, newcomer Canibus destroyed this track like the Knicks destroy the dreams of their fans. Even with a dope Redman verse, you don’t remember anything from this song but lyrical devastation. The fire in his voice. The raw lyricism. It was almost like the next stage of evolution. “I existed, in the Garden of Eden getting’ lifted, sticking d**k to Eve before she was Adam’s mistress.” All you could do was cover your mouth and go “Ohh, did you hear that!” 50 bucks says we can tell you exactly where your tape popped. Thank God for CDs.
“Triumph”-Wu-Tang Clan - Wu-Tang Forever (1997) Inspectah Deck Verse
Rhyming over the drums of war and blanketed by string instruments, Deck heralded the triumphant return of the Clan, passionately referencing Socrates, atomic bombs, forensic science and just about everything but the kitchen sink. On a double album with 8 other emcees with different styles, The Inspectah Deck had perhaps the most memorable verse of them all.
“U Don’t Know”-Jay-Z - The Blueprint (2001) 1st Verse
No more admiring the Jiggaman “from 4 fiends away,” The Blueprint represented Jay-Z’ s first real attempt to let us in. Even in an attempt to be more soulful, Marcy’s finest showed he’s at his best when he’s bringing the grit and the game at the same time. “U Don’t Know” is almost “Where I’m From” part 2, but with more passion and more force. Just Blaze on the boards gives Jay just enough fuel to blast off about the place where the hood’s swallowing (pause) and there’s so much coke that you can run slalom. Even when talking on the hood, Jigga throws in something like skiing to show he wasn’t your average hustler. Now you know.
“Time’s Up”-O.C. - Word…Life (1994) 1st Verse
The first call to arms of the Keep It Real Brigade. Previously seen batting clean-up on Organized Konfusion’s “Fudge Pudge,”O.C gives a stern warning to “those who pose lyrical but really ain’t true,” delivering a caveat to posers and rappers who present themselves as gangsters and thugs when their actual lives deviate from their rhymes. While skilled, O.C.’s career wasn’t been mainstream, but he spearheaded the underground vanguard and put fakers on notice: their time was up!
“Lyrics of Fury”-Eric B & Rakim - Follow The Leader (1988) 2nd Verse
He’s got more classic songs, and he’s definitely got more popular songs to reference, but the original god mc rarely showcased lightning fast mic crushing flow such as he represented on Lyrics of Fury. “Funky Drummer” powered, guitar enhanced, no hooks or funny business. Rakim switches flows, and rhyme schemes effortlessly with a punishing array of line after line. The second verse gets the nod over the other two for the energy, the pace, and “capable, breaks the unbreakable series that leaves you breathless. You don’t have time to clap to this. Just listen and let the rhythm hit you.
“Respiration”-Black Star - Black Star (1998) Mos Def Verse
B-Boy intro and melancholy beat segue into a robust Mos Def delivering his version of “The Message”. No longer Reaganomics, but the post Bush, Clinton era America highlighted by Giuliani dystopia masquerading as Disneyfied New York. Mos describes a Rotten Apple encapsulated by higher costs of living, a stock market tempting brokers towards dishonesty, and evening news casting urban as villain, and overall the everyman’s attempt to sift through the garbage and survive. The city was alive and breathing and Mos Def had his finger on the pulse.
“Dream Shatterer” - Big Pun - Capital Punishment (1998) 1st verse
“It’s Big Pun, the one and only son of Tony Montana, you ain’t promised manana in the rotten manzana.” So true in light of Pun tragically passing away due to complications of his massive gerth. Providing gargantuan lyrics every time he touched a mic, Pun was the beacon for Latinos in Hip-Hop who for too long were relegated to second string status in the rap game. The Boricua’s flow stole many a show [“Off The Books,” “Banned From TV,” et. al] but on “Dream Shatterer” he’s going for self, asserting skills knows no color in the process: “I’m the first Latin rapper to baffle your soul, master the flow, n***as be swearing I’m blacker than coal.”
“Elevators (Me & You)” – OutKast - ATLiens (1996) Andre 3000’s 2nd verse
Mr. Three Stacks was already flowing something crazy since he and Big Boi laid that Southernplayalistic music for your trunk. There is nothing too outerworldy about the track or the flow, but the beauty is in the simplicity of it all. Illustrating his position as a layman that has a superior rap ability with tongue and cheek chutzpah, [“True I got more fans than the average man but not enough to loot to last me/To the end of the week I live by the beat like you live check to check, if it don’t move your feet then I don’t eat, so we like neck and neck”], his job security is since no longer an issue.
“Born Killer” – Scarface - Mr. Scarface Is Back (1991) 2nd Verse
For the budding psychotic, Scarface provided the soundtrack of a lifetime. For the uninformed, he offered a glimpse in to the mind of a man tettering on the edge of insanity. Combine that with one Brad Jordan’s penchant for being one of the South’s finest and you have a verse for the ages. “My momma did her part / But it ain't her fault that I was born with out a heart / In other words I'm heartless duke / I don't love me, how the f**k I'mma love you?” With lyrics like these and a bar none mentality Mr. Scarface received a universal ghetto pass.
“Renegade”-Jay-Z - The Blueprint (2001) Eminem 1st verse
Absent the antics. Minus the mom mashing. No Hailey in sight, Mr Mathers' lyrical gymnastics outshined S. Dot’s verse over the melody of the beat he himself created. The verse that made Eminem all good in the hood on a critically acclaimed album, and gave a true blueprint on how to flow yet deliver a message. Dropping with the bassline and rising with the background strings, then breaking the pattern for onomatopoeia, Mr. Kiss My Ass was certainly the Renegade on this joint.

Anyone?

“Respiration”-Black Star
This is one of the best hip-hop tunes I've heard. Verse-wise, Mos Def has a better effort on "Hater Players" on the same album though.
Visions occupy my synaptic space. I'm pretty sure I've posted it earlier in the "Best verse" thread.

Glad someone's debating the list finally.
I was quite surprised not to see AZ's famous verse on Life's A Bitch to be honest, I thought it would be a certainty.

Listening to Capital Punishment as we speak, Dream Shatterer is fucking raw. Big Pun is definitely that dude.
Would've maybe liked to see Biggie's verse on Notorious Thugs with Bone Thugz make the list. That was fucking ground-breaking for me.
Pretty random list. Take any verse off of Illmatic and it'll be better than Live at the BBQ. Similarly, Jay's spit plenty better than U Don't Know. #1 choice pretty bad too.
