What a shame, eh?

I wonder what excuses Jose Mourinho will have.

Any thoughts on this wonderful occasion?

Unlike Arsene Wenger's usual, Jose Mourinho didn't have any excuses, in fact, he gave yet another impeccable and honest statement.

As for the game, Mourinho took a gamble resting various players, it didn't work out.

Newcastle were brilliant, as were Chelsea to be honest. Chelsea just didn't have the luck up front. Mateja Kezman's shot off the bar could have changed things.

It sounded to me that gung ho tactics lost the game for Chelsea. Bringing on three substitutions can shake up the team but in this case they were unlucky to lose Bridge. Duff and Gallas were struggling towards the end too. Still, Chelsea have lost just 3 games in 41 matches played in all competition. That's still a damn fine statistic. What will be interesting to see is how they react to the defeat when the take on Barcelona on Wednesday. They have to put it behind them. Sometimes, when a team on a winning streak slips up they can stumble to regain their composure. Remember United knocking Arsenal out of the FA Cup only to exit out of Europe a few days later to, ironically Chelsea and THAT Wayne Bridge goal.

As a United fan I'm not going to rush out for a fridge load of champagne. They're still on for three and any United fan can tell you what winning a treble feels like.

It was neither sarcasm nor ignorance. It is the opinion of him which I and many other unbiased football fans hold.

He told the truth, he didn't say anything about being cheated by referees, nor did he say that the injuries were the reason they lost, nor did he throw a pizza at Souness.

As a football-fan, I'm saddened to see Newcastle win this game. Chelsea play mroe attractive football, so I would have liked seeing them go through (since I prefer watching Chelsea-games, on TV, instead of Newcastle... )

It's nice seeing that Kluivert finally made a difference though. He's been having a lot of difficulty so far in England, getting his game on, and I doubt this one goal will suddenly change his whole form from OK-ish to spectacular, but it's a player I love to see play, and I hope he will get back in the form he had a couple of years ago. Sadly he is also dependent on the rest of the team to reach a certain level of class, and Newcastle in the current form doesnt seem very hopefull...

Kezman hitting the bar. Story of the season really for that poor fellow. In the dutch league he was blasting the balls in from each and every angle, but I think he has had a record now in the PL of hitting bars and posts and miracle misses etc. It's sad to see such a great forward having so much bad luck in so lil playing time... Ah well, I'm sure his luck will change and we'll see the old Kezman.

No quadruple... I guess that's not so bad. It's kinda weird cause on the one hand I'm an Arsenal fan so I am kinda glad Chelsea wont be winning the FA cup, but on the other hand, if I'm totally honest about it, Chelsea has been playing very good, and with Robben in the team, very attractive football, and just based on this year's play they deserve the title(s) more then anyother club in the PL right now.
I want Arsenal to win, but if Chelsea wins, I'm pretty at peace with that as well...

Ofcourse the usual bunch of Arsenal and Man Utd fanboys won't agree with me, but hey... that's probably best. :)

Unsurprisingly this thread has descended into the usual spam-filled shambles.

I've posted my views on the game in the betting section so i'll just put them in here aswell.

Canny shite game but it's the result that matters, we didn't seem to know what to do after we took the lead, although to be fair I thought Chelsea only really had one golscoring chance, through Kezman. Before the game I would certainly have taken a scrappy 1-0 win, I know it can't have been enteraining for the neutral, but with the way our season has turned out I'm certainly not complaining. We desperately needed to get results in our two cup ties this week, and that's precisely what we've done, the Hereeveen win was impressive, hopefully this can be the springboard for some decent peformances.

I wasn't sure about the sending-off, i thought a booking would have been fair, not that it made any difference to the final outcome though.

I was very pleased with the goal, the ball being calmly passed about before Robert made space for the cross, excellent header from Kluivert aswell.

Apart from the assist I thought Robert was poor, time and time again he had chances to cross, but he either went for the spectacular or failed to put a decent cross in. When Bridge went off Robert had the opportunity to really get at the Chelsea defence, but despite several positive runs down the left he provided very little.

I agree Chelsea were unlucky, but I was surprised Mourinho made the triple-substitution when he did, as Chelsea had been the better team for the majority of the first-half. Surely he could have just brought two on at half-time and see how things develop, his decision backfired quite badly.

I was pleased to see Mourinho gracious in defeat, a certain Mr Wenger could learn from that.

Also, did anyone see when the linesman gave Chelsea a corner when the ball rolled out for a throw-in about an inch away from him? Talk about incompetent.

talking of inconcsistancy Ronaldo seems to have picked up from his inconsistant form ... i think he has scored 5 goals in his last 8 United games which is extremely well for a midfielder...

Mourinho 's been critised by many for his sub decisions,i not the biggest mourinho fan but i agree with him with the team he picked he never said they were on for the four trohpies that was something the media hyped up he always said it was near impossible he also said that the barce game was his piority and it showed in his team selection
could he have waited till abit later on in the half ? maybe but maybe he also wanted them to have more time to have impact on the game and i'm sure that mourinho could not have imagined all that stuff would have happedned in the second half i.e. bridge injury and duff limping
thought i'd be glad if the quadruple dream was over but at the end of the day it was never chelsea who said they'll do just the media(and some over excited fans) so i'm not that bothered that they've lost(champions league will be a different matter though
can't believe i'm actually defending jose mourinho and chelsea

with bramble and o'brien when they are paird with someone of a higher regard such as a woodgate or boumsong... they are alongside them and giving them advice, telling them to do what... but when paired together they both are just a complete nightmare and havent a clue what the other one wants or is going to do

Ohhh I love Gooner bitterness. It happened against Monaco last year as well, but where the hell were they when a Champions League semi-final took place? In fact where were they when a Champions League semi final ever took place!?

Threads like these only serve to put a huge smile on my face, and confirm my thoughts about some of the other members of this forum, who'd publically celebrate the fact Chelsea won't win FOUR trophies this season! Honestly, take a step back and look how petty and embarressing you're all being.

Triple substitution - there's been a few fickle new fans on the radio saying how this was Mourinho's fault. I think Mourinho would've taken a loss over a draw today, obviously he wanted to win firstly, but a draw was definately third on the list. He started an under-strength, but capable team against Newcastle. They took the lead and Mourinho had a choice to make - either he went to win it, or he'd accept defeat. He went to win it, he had to make the three substitutions very early on - what's the point on making them with 20 minutes to go - it would only leave 20 minutes to get two goals.

So he put them all on early to give us as long as possible to win the tie, this could've worked spectacularly if we went on to win 2/3-1 - however quickly being brought down to 10 men soon put the odds against us.

Bramble really surprised me, although Kezman's not the most lethal of players, he was incredible against him. Let's see if he keeps this form going.

Bit on MOTD this evening re: Kezman: "What does this boy have to do to score?!"

Answer: move back to Holland where defences give him a 10 second headstart and time to chose where to put the ball.

Glen Johnson is better goalkeeper than Lehmann and Almunia.

I agree same thing happend last year sad that people get happiness over other people loosing a game.

This is what I would have expected Spurs fans to do as they have no chance in any cup however, were still in a cup final and 9 points clear with so little games too go ain't the end of the world.
