I found it hysterical the other day to read that new Chelsea signing Claude Makelele has come out and said that Chelsea are a bigger club than Real Madrid. Did the Chelsea medical staff give him morphine during his medical, or he is just delusional all of the time?
The sad fact is that he is probably not the only one who believes this to be true. The national media, which is based in London anyway, has hyped the club up for years. After years of having these false views spoon fed to them, it has lead Chelsea fans to believe that they are indeed a big club.
The ‘Mighty’ Chelsea has only won the League once, compare that to the 29 times Real have lifted the Spanish title, and the picture begins to make itself clear. Real has also been crowned champions of Europe no less than 9 times, whereas Chelsea have never won Europe’s top prize. There are several English clubs that have won more major titles than Chelsea both domestically and abroad. Out of all of the most successful clubs in England, Chelsea rank joint 13th with Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United. The most successful teams can be seen below:
1. Liverpool (30 trophies)
2. Man Utd (26 trophies)
3. Arsenal (20 trophies)
4. Aston Villa (16 trophies)
5. Everton (15 trophies)
6. Spurs (14 trophies)
7. Newcastle (11 trophies)
t8. Blackburn Rovers
Man City
Sheffield Wednesday
Sunderland (8 trophies)
12. Leeds United (6 trophies)
t13. Nottingham Forest
Sheffield United
Chelsea (5 trophies).
Hardly convincing grounds for the media hype they receive is it? And as for the hype surrounding West Ham, where are they when teams stand up to be counted, I can’t see them. Another media myth about West Ham is that they have the ‘Academy’ that produces brilliant youth teams. Who concocted that false reality, in their entire history they have only created 2 generations of good teams, in the 60’s when players like Bobby Moore came through and the 90’s when players like Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick were produced. Don’t get me wrong there were some great players in those two eras, but the academy itself is nowhere near as good as the likes of Ajax or even Crewe. The Hammers are about as big as Bolton and teams like Southampton, in terms of achievements and success.
Let us not forget that Chelsea was only two weeks away from going bust, and it was only Abramovich’s fortune that saved the club.
Sounds to me that Makelele has been left bitter by his departure from the Bernebeu, and is having to justify his decision by making ridiculous claims because he is unsure about Chelsea’s chances of winning any trophies this season. If Madrid really wanted Makelele to stay then they would have surely given in to his wage demands.
And to top it all off, if Chelsea do buy their way to the Premiership title this season, the hype and fan’s egos will only become more inflated!
