Like the title says, I hate MLS. I can't watch it. It's a total disgrase to real football, European football........ I just can't stand watching it, it's like my god damn high school team compared to Europe football. It's not the same sports, it's not even called the same, that's how much it sucks ass.... I can't belive people actually watch that.
God.... why isn't there more real football on tv in America? Why God? Why? Why are you doing this to me?

Watched it on channel five last year, and was amazed at how poor it is! And what the hell is a Pepsi Power Shot?

what the...???? :)

I have to agree the MLS is much poorer than the rest of the world, in quality. Improve your game, Yanks!

I agree MLS is poor and i hate it, more to the point i hate yanks. But it is getting better and better and i would'nt be suprised if they start to become a decent side, because look how big the U.S.A is. There must be some pretty good footy players, just look at Freddy Adu or That lad who was born in Finland and plays there, i can't remeber his name but he has a massive head.
BO SELECTA!!!!!!!!!!!!111111

College soccer is kind of a joke here. it's really considered division 4. above that we have the PDL which i could probably play in, and i'm horrible. above that we have the A league, and above that there is MLS. it's really not as horrible as you say. i think we would do a bit better than the french league, have you seen any of those games, and we are further above the scandinavian leagues as far as talent goes. Sure we're no premier league, but then, would the premier league be so good if all the other leagues are at such a high level? really there are only 6 leagues at the top, brazilian, german, english, dutch, italian, and spanish. MLS is one of htose second teir leagues like the french, swedish, danish, mexican, belgian etc...

certainly more talent than j-league and k-league!

with players like landon donovan, brian mcbride, carlos bocanegra, damani ralph, damarcus beasley, etc... We have a lot of talent. plus we are only a 9 year old league. give it a change to grow. the euro leagues have been around for decades and had chances to build. plus we live in a country where soccer is not as big of a deal as it is everywhere else (mostly because it's hard for tv networks to justify 45 minutes without commercials... bastards)

wow mls flamed by a brit...here's a shocker :D

i'm gonna have to pretty much agree with gutbomb on this one though. the league is still really young to even be comparing it to the top tier leagues in europe.

You got it right. For the game to take off you need the kind of infrastructure the more established footballing nations have got. I can only speak for Scotland but we have football leagues at primary school level, Secondary school level, the 'Juniors leagues' semi pro status, the Sunday leagues, Three divisions of professional teams and then the Preimer league. For a nation of only five million people that is a shit load of football being played.

If, or when, USA gets the momentum going you are going to be a major force in World Football. It's easy for the Europeans to scoff due to the wealth of talent in Europe but I see that as being short sighted. On a similar note, I'm just waiting for an African nation to take the World Cup and I do not think I will have to wait too long.

Jamil Walker of San Jose Earthquakes is he any good?

That is one thing that really annoyed me about American sport. The ads!!! Every bar I went to they were showing the college bowl games but there was a stat/ad/music break every 5 mins! We also went and saw the NY Rangers play and there again there was a break every 5 mins. Admittedly US sports & media have developed the sports hand in hand to incorporate max numebr of breaks but... I think that is part of the reason "soccer" is still not that big.

Thing is tho, I hear more and more kids take it all the way to high school but unfortunately then drop it to do something proper! You guys got to the q-finals in the WC of a sport you are not even that interested in. Imagine what would happen if you really cared!

reason why people stop playing after high school is blatenly obvious

college football in the states is good for 1 thing...paying for college

generally if you are an extremely good player, you are on a junior national/national/mls team by then, so rarely does college (now) prep you for professional football. if you are on one of those teams...why risk injury playing in college?

even if it does, there are what, 10 mls teams...thats not a lot of opportunity for top level football here. yeah we have semi-pro teams, but not many even know about them. everyone knows 'real' football is played in europe and i've had a few friends leave and go play in some lesser scottish leagues and a ukrainian league.

plus there is still lots of pressure from many family members/etc that dont understand/like football and just tell you to 'get a real job' etc. It's quite different than if you played baseball or american football/basketball...

I played football and american football through high school. i got offers to play both in college, nice scholarships too, so i ended up choosing the one that made college the cheapest...wouldnt you?

So I was a place kicker (field goals) in college, I was unable to compete officially on a football team or risk the chance of them pulling my scholarship. So I went 4 years with playing no more than 8 football games.

Here is where it is funny. I was good at american football, 55yd field goals, setting school records left and right. I got pressure to go play semi-pro american football, but didnt have the desire...i was done, wanted to move on. So now here I am working and playing football and getting told by those people that I should be trying out for semi-pro football teams.

What is funny is that I ONLY see that pressure from fellow football players...where as with american football...you get that pressure from everyone and their grandma.

Yeah we have youth leagues here, from age 5 up. And the US Soccer org. is always building up the youth programs. To a point where the youth programs take precedence over other programs. I think our problem is an inadequate number of coaches at the high school level. Let me rephrase that, an inadequate number of GOOD coaches at the high school level.

Many kids have talent...but they need help realizing that and reaching the fullness of that.

Next 5-10 years is going to be huge in American Football.

I think this thread (whoever started it) will offend some American PESInsight members which is totaly uncool to me. I do agree, MLS is nothing compared to European teams, and the reason is simple.. Soccer or football is not even popular here in the states sho why in the bloody hell would they try to make it better if nobody is watching it.. MLS is getting better, they are buying some European young talents which will become good players in the future, and in the next 5 to 10 years who knows what might happend.. But when you look at the things from your honest point of view, America (usa) is one of the strongest/ most powerful and richest nation in the world, isn`t that right.. Majority of baseball players and American football players earn more money than any football player in Europe, yes including Beckham. Rodger Clemens one of the best baseball players of all time could easily buy the entire English Premier League or something else.. and he`s in his near 40s. Talk about basketball, NBA or Tennis - GOLF etc..

It is also unfair to the MLS to compare the league to Euro leagues in that its there for a different purpose.

The MLS is mainly there to develop talent for the National Team. That's why there are all the stringent rules on who can be on a team, where they are from, etc. Its to build american talent...not compete w/euro teams.

Winning 11
30-01-2004, 13:27
And plus, USA doesn`t even have enough teams to compete with Euro in the 1st place.

SubCrawler
30-01-2004, 17:23
So we are agreed then?

1. USA is a huge untapped market of talent, that given the proper impetous will become a major player in international football.

2. That fact that they are as yet 'undeveloped' is not a sign of incompetence or lack of effort but a sign of 'culture clash'.

Well, I don't know about the other europeans on this forum but I'm 'rooting' for ya.

Who cares about MLS, not me for sure. All my life, I`ve been following European leagues and it`s teams. Sometimes, I get mad because here at the states they barely air any European football. Only some UEFA (important games, like semifinals or finals that`s about it..)

MLS being successful is important because it introduces greater competition and talent to the world marketplace. Need I mention the current Man Yoo Goalie?

You may not have noticed, because of the low level of coverage in the states, but european football is in a rut. It's the same old clubs winning the domestic and non domestic titles.

I, for one, have been watching the Africa Cup and loving it. Most of the teams have not heard of midfielders. It's fun footy.

If MLS can get it's act together then that would give us, the viewing public, greater choice. That's why I want MLS to work.

I greatly care about the MLS as it determines the future of the USA National team. Without the MLS we have no in house ways of training up our players. MISL (major indoor soccer league) doesnt count, and college doesnt prepare kids enough...AND we cant have all our talent go to Europe to play or else its too hard to get them back for training.

I'd have to agree 100% with SubCrawlers two points he made though.

Although we in the states to get games, you just need the right channels. Fox Sports World shows EPL games every week as well as lots of the other leagues.

yeah for those of you that want to see euro footty, just turn on fox sports world. Dutch league, German League, even the boring french league. As well as english league. Plus in MLS season they will be showing MLS matches as well. And then there is GOLTV which shows la liga and serie a. TONS of euro football on US TV. oh don't forget the argentine league and brazilian league is also shown on fox sports world also, and also the interliga tournament, copa libertadores (probably spelled wrong) on FSW as well. Champion's league on ESPN/ESPN2 (sometimes) and UEFA cup on GOLTV

MLS is light-years better than the football was in any nation's league's first eight years of existence, period. I live in Scotland right now, have seen football in England, Spain and France..MLS is not that far behind. It IS behind, no question, but for a league no young, MLS is doing just fine. If you can't stand watching MLS, you'd have NEVER survived the first few years of the leagues in your own nations, believe me. the Terence Stamp-narrated HISTORY OF FOOTBALL DVD archives, as well as some prorietary footage to which I had access at one point (I was Head of Special Projects 2001-2003 at CONCACAF), bears this out as absolute truth. MLS is following a fine tradition of starting out relative rubbish; hopefully, they'll eventually build into a fine world-class league. In the meantime, I'll stick by Division I football in the States, no matter what form it takes, thank you very much.

i think americans have been watching american football, basketball, baseball, and ice hockey... it need something special for soccer to be developed in the usa... well, usa is one of the best in the woman's game now. and their men's team are improving... if mls get rid of the playoffs and really establish a 20-team top division like the premiership, i think there will be more people watching and more foreign players will come here to the usa...

While alot of you have made good points about the potential of the MLS, I think you are still underestimating the MLS's quality.

The biggest obstacle to attractive football in MLS is the poor pitch quality. Many teams use 'football' fields or college fields. These are often the wrong size and aren't well maintained. I have only played on a professional quality pitch once and it made a HUGE difference. MLS teams have the talent to play entertaining football, and when they play in LA or Columbus (where they have their own stadiums) they often do. I would watch either of these teams play over that horrid Porto Depor series any day of the week.

IMO the MLS is the 7th best league in the world, and it is probably the only league in the world where over 50% of the teams have a legitimate shot at the title. Football is already the most played sport in the US, and we have 250+ million people here. Elitists like Beckham_always#7 better get thier kicks now, because things are changing fast.

i agree with u celtic420. the teams here netta have their own stadiums... even the players are confused when they are playing on the american football field... got a few hundred lines on the pitch and really struggling to recognise which line is which...

i think it is doing really well for a new league. it is folloeing the traditions of american sport with the drafts. this means in about 10-15 years the league will be set. i cant help but think that a country as big as the united states which dominates almost every other sport is not going to be dominating football in years to come. look how much the national team has improved. look at the bright talented players they have.
