View Full Version : What formation do you use?
I wonder which formations you guys use. And do you make any changes depending the team your are playing against, for exemple playing a 4-4-2 instead of a 4-3-3 because the opposite team is playing with 3 strikers, like Holland or Norway.

my formation is 4-3-3. I never change it no matter who I play against cause I've learnt it very well and I find it difficult to use another one
I usually also play a 4-3-3 formation, with one defensive midfielder (who doesn't take part in the attacks), 1 tall striker and 2 fast wingers. Whenever I can, so when I have the players for it, I use the system because it's very effective to me. You can score pretty often. And... Attacking is the best way to defend :D. But now I'm playing with Bulgaria, and I don't have the players for that system. So I play a 4-4-2 formation. Solid system, though I'm always having troubles playing against 3 attackers. When the opposite team is using a 4-3-3 formation, it's always difficult for me to win the game (on the Extreme Level). Lost 2 times in a row from Holland, and 1 out of 2 from Norway. That damn Carew :D.
Carew missed a penalty against me today as Wales today so he's in my good books at the moment :D
Anyway, I nearly always create a new formation depending on the team i play with - their strengths and their weaknesses taken into account.
I like playing the 442 diamond with 1 DM and 1 AM but im experimenting with a 3412 formation later today which I think is going to be unstoppable
Also i made a really good 31312 formation which is a balanced attacking and defensive formation cos uve got 2 wide 'full-backs' who bomb forward but also work well defensively.
On a side-note, how do you use 'attack attitude'? Lately i've been putting my 2 strikers on forward runs along with the midfielders who i want to go forward with the DM on the normal setting and my back four on the normal setting also
3-5-2, with two def mids and one attcking mid. i just use it as my players fit in to the positons easly and am realy used to it (14+ seasonds)

I mostly use 3-5-2 with 2DMFs too. But I can also play 4-4-2, 3-4-3 and a modified 4-3-3.
3-5-2, with the positions modified to make it more of a 3-2-3-2, with the three midfielders behind the strikers all on attacking attitude, as are the strikers. It seems to work best if I try to use the two defensive midfielders to "shepherd" attackers into wide positions as I seem to lose most goals to a fast attacker bombing right through the middle of my defence. I used to leak loads of goals, now in 35 games I've had 23 clean sheets, and only lost 2 games (on 4* difficulty...is it time to move up?).

Yes Spike. Go to 5*!!
---> Robinho
About the attacking attitude: I normally put my back four, and my defensive midfielder (in a 4-4-2 or a 4-3-3 formation) on backward runs. So they do not take part in the attacks. Very effectively when playing against top teams like France, Holland, ... because you can't be surprised by counter attacks. Let the attacking players do their job. They don't have to think about defending, and that keeps them sharp in front of the goal. Normally my strikers are on normal setting, so they aren't to deep and can ask the bal, create space for wingers,... But when playing 2 attackers in front, try giving one attacker (like a Hartson, or a Koller)a backward attacking attitude. They will play closer to the Midfield. You can give them the ball, keep it, and they pull some defenders towards them. So they create space for the other attacker, which is many times one-on-one or two-on-one. Then it's up to you. Just do what a striker has to do. Make a great move, use pace and score that goal!
On a side note: I play with Wales on a 5-3-2 formation. 5 defenders, with one libero, all an a backward attacking attitude, because Wales isn't that good in defence I would say. Then 3 players in the midfield, with Giggs on the left, Speed the playmaker, and Blake on the right. In front, Hartson behind Bellamy (which in my opinion is a great striker. He has it all: pace, technique,... and he scores goals with great ease! Scored 24 goals with him, in about 17 games on the Extreme Level)
Zygalski, Spike, Mick03, a 3-5-2 formation can be very effective indeed, when playing with two fast wingers, who don't only care about attacking. You have many players in midfield, so you can take control. And that is, in my opinion, the key to win the game.
But I don't think it's a good idea playing that formation against teams playing with 3 attackers, like Holland, and Norway. Once the attacker passes your defender, you are in big troubles. It's not easy to take an Overmars back for exemple :D... Against such teams, I mostly play the same formation, 4-3-3. 4 defenders to handle 3 attackers, one-on-one in the midfield and 3 strikers. You can put their defense under pressure, and it won't be easy for them to place a sharp counter attack.
Whenever I can, I use a 4-3-3 formation, with 4 defenders on a line, 1 defensive midfielder, and in front a tall player with two fast wingers next to him. Great formation, solid, attacking,... Only need suited players for it.

Nice formation, I don't use it though. I like attacking, but that is a litle bit to much of the good :D. But when playing Brazil, Argentina, Holland, ... it's very effective. You don't need to think about defending with those brilliant players, that's for sure :D.
Which players do you use? Dida in goal I suspect. Then Lucio of course. But what about Roberto Carlos, and Cafu? Do you place them in the defence, or on the wings in the midfield? Emerson defending midfielder? And Rivaldo, behind the 3 attackers or as left winger? Because Denilson is also pretty good...
Always having 'troubles' when playing with great teams like Brazil, or Argentina. Just don't know who to put in my line-up. Brilliant players, everyone of them.

you unlock him in we7 from the shop, him and romario and a few others
I don't use those players, in the normal teams I would say, because I think that's cheating. But hey, It's no big deal others use them. They are just ordinary players, and the developer puts them there to be used, so...
Playing the International League with South-Africa at the moment. I'm using a 3-5-2 formation, and it works amazing. I'm playing with 2 defensive midfielders. Always having control over the midfield, and creating plenty of chances. 3 defenders, with a backward attitude: Radebe, Issa, Mokoena. Dangerous when playing against 3 attackers though, but they do very well. 2 defensive midfielders, Ngobe (backward attacking attitude) and Buckley. 2 superb 'wingers' (believe me :D), Fortune on the left and Zuma on the right. My offensive midfielder is Nomvete. And 2 brilliant strikers, McCarthy and Masinga. McCarthy is such a great header!

I use the diamond formation 4-4-2 with a slight twist. I put my right-winger right out wide and the furthest forward you can have in midfield. By doing this -
1) My right midfielder is sometimes unmarked so I can attack with him
2) I can use him to spread the play and break down the oppos defense.
3) It gives the opportunity for my right back to attack.
You may think this leaves me vulnerable on the oppos counter but because I play with quite a deep defensive midfielder I have enough defenders to close it down.
I also adjust the position of my wingers, but I put them wider, almost near the side-line. They are often alone, and that is a big advantage. When there are to many players in the midfield, I pass the ball to one of my wingers. They have a lot of space in front of them. Just deal with the side-back of the opposite team, and you can make a free run. I always try to reach the goal-line, and then swing the ball in front of the goal (by doing that, the goalies can't intercept the ball often because the ball mostly falls between them and their defenders). My attackers do the rest.

I like to play 4-4-2C with a little twist, when I am Real Madrid.
I use: Casillias,Salgado, Bravo, Helguera, Carlos
Zizou Figo
Becks Munitis (haven't fixt munitis
Ronaldo Raul
Then I let carlos run turn it over to becks and he crosses into the box, works perfect.

I also use 4-4-2 with a little twist. Its a style that I've become acustomed to.
Say if I'm England for example I have the left (usually Sinclair or Dyer) winger out by the touchline practically and a little bit forward, then have Scholes attacking, and Gerrard sort of holding with his attack style balanced, and Beckham out on the right almost against the touchline. Owen I have furthest forward out of the two strikers.
I always have my two central defenders defending while the left and rightbacks are balanced. I usually have Ferdinand covering and the rest of the team zone marking.
I've recently created Rooney for the England team, and have been debating on trying a 3-4-3 with Rooney playing in the hole.
But the 4-4-2 I've described is the one formation that I do best at.

4-4-2 custom just like man u use with scholes just behind van and with neville, silvestre, ronaldo, gigg s pushing foward and butt and keane pushing back
I use a normal 4-4-2 but with the DM running back and the rest of midfield running up as well as wing backs, but i don't stick to that for a whole game i just use it to see if i can notice where the other team are weak cause i've got different formations as my stratagies like 4-3-3 with two strikers dropping behind middle one and also a 4-3-1-2 with wingers wide and OMF free role
Hi fellas, newbie here...
I've heard a lot about the "free role" and libero modes. Is it possible to assign players to free roles in WE6:I? I haven't yet found this in the tactics section...
BTW, I use a 4-4-2 with a flat midfield. I just feel more comfortable with it, as I feel that I've got the entire pitch covered.
hi
To make a formation work u need to know what is your squad is capable of, anyway i use 3-4-3 ( changes to 4-3-3 and can change to 3-5-2 or 4-4-2 in the game depending on the RMF and RWF or the opposite side -for me i use the R side- ). What formation u feel really workin for u and comfortable with that would be the one. Play and Enjoy first then Win. ;)
hi
i use 3-4-3 with sweeper
cech
A.Cole(CB) Terry(CWP) Del Horno (cb)
duff (RWB) Gerrard(cmf) Lampard(CMF) J.Cole (LWB)
Rooney (RWF) Torres(SS) Podolski(LWF)
if oponent plays 442 then i change rwb&Lwb na lmf&rmf
4-3-3 formation using chelsea
its easy to use long ball
and btw,im using another 2 formation that is super offensive and super defensive

My favourite is the classic 4-4-2 diamond

4-3-3 Here. A-3 I think. It looks like this.
------------------GK---------------------
-RB-----CB----------------CB---------LB-
-RM--------------CM-----------------LM-
------------SS------------SS------------
------------------CF--------------------
Usually, I play with Lyon. So, In order of positions. Coupet, Reveillere (RB), Cacapa (CB), Cris (CB), Berthod (LB), Govou (RM), Diarra (CM), Malouda (LM), Juninho (SS), Wiltord (SS), Carew (CF). Works just perfect for me.
I use the same formation as nikos

I don't want to slate the 4-3-3 formation, because I sometimes use it, but it's the easiest formation to play with. I like to challange myself, so I play a various number of formations. 4-4-2 is my favourite because it suites my passing style.
I've been using a new 4-4-2 formation:
-----------GK-------------
-------CB------CB---------
SB----------------------SB
---------------------------
-----------DM-------------
---------------------------
-----------CM-------------
---------------------------
----AM-----------AM------
-------------SS-----------
---------------------------
----------CF--------------
When defending, the above formation changes to 4-5-1, when attacking it becomes 2-4-4. Great for counter-attacks.
Sure does;) Thats probably my favourite position but I do vary it alot.

EDIT: I forgot to add the backwards arrows to the SBs, like I did for the CBs.
I play most with these formations:
FOR INSTANCE FC BARCELONA

---CB--CB----
SB---------SB
----CMF-----
AMF------CMF
--SS-----SS--
-----CF------
FOR INSTANCE BRAZIL

This way, without a DMF, you have lots of players participating in your attacking play and you'll always find a free player to pass to when trying to find an opening. When in possesion you'll have almost every player available to receive the ball.
You should have all players' defensive arrows on high playing a zonal pressing game where every player including the strikers takes part in defending when not in possesion. Try to really play zonal pression instead of moving defenders forward to stop opponents running with the ball. Relax, your defense is still there, try to defend with your forwards and midfielders.
Especially, when not in possesion do not let the opposition lure your side backs forward chasing opposition players. Let midfielders and attackers take over pressing when they try play 1-2's on the wing so you'll have your side back covering when your opponent's winger breaks through. In fact, he will not dare break through because your side back is still there covering and will be ready to win the ball or at least block any dangerous plan.
When attacking try to vary with SS players coming through the centre and running deep on the wing (put SS attacking arrows like this: one forward, one to the centre), use short through passes straight forward when space opens up, or long high trough passes when your SB is in possesion far enough up the field to unleash a winger run. Most of all, search for combinations and openings with direct quick passing on the opposition half, you'll have enough players there. ALso put your AMF attacking arrow diagonally to the CF.
The inclusion of at least two CMF players is crucial because they can both attack and defend far up the pitch, these guys will make your game flow smooth. Best players for this position are obviously the strong allround guys like Gerrard, Vieira, Emerson, Cocu, Deco, Xavi, Nedved, Pirlo, Lampard, Cambiasso, Veron, Stankovic, Seedorf, Juninho, Riquelme, the list goes on. They do not even have to best very fast because of the fact they are CMF and will position themselves well.
Last but not least be patient. Don't use R1 too much, on or off the ball. Use R2 a lot.
Playing this way, you'll find yourselves playing dominantly, on the opposition half, creating lots of chances. In real life football you'll always hear people talk about using a '10' or playmaker, but strong dominantly attacking teams like Barca and Brazil really play with four or five 10s, coming from every possible angle.
Like we all would like to play...
