Newcastle United snatched N'Zogbia from Le Havre in controversial circumstances in August 2004.
Le Havre lodged an official complaint with the French Football Federation and FIFA in an attempt to prevent him joining the Magpies.
Although the French FA did refuse to sanction the transfer, FIFA ruled in United's favour.
The midfielder joined Le Havre's training centre when he was 11 but, aged 19, turned his back on a two-year professional contract with them in favour of Newcastle.
Newcastle only had to pay a compensation fee of £250,000 to get their man.
United rate N'Zogbia so highly they felt within two weeks he would be in their first-team squad and looking to break into their Premiership side.
And he made his debut as a substitute in the 3-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers in mid-September 2004.
The left-sided midfielder had been training with United for a month but they kept him under wraps because they knew that several other leading clubs in Europe were also interested.
All the talk at Newcastle was that N'Zogbia is a better prospect than Hugo Viana - and he cost United £8.5million.
The signing was a tremendous coup for Sir Bobby Robson, his chief scout Charlie Woods and his scouting team.
Charles got the number 14 shirt from another famous Frenchman, David Ginola who played in the same posistion as him.
Newcastle United completed the signing of teenage French midfielder Charles N'Zogbia in August 2004.
The 19-year-old is one of the most highly rated youngster's in France, and had been training with the Magpies for a month after deciding against extending his contract with Le Havre and impressed Sir Bobby Robson sufficiently to earn a contract.
Although N'Zogbia was out of contract the Magpies still had to pay the French side a fee because of his age, but they expect the compensation package to be just £250,000.
The deal is similar to the one that brought Olivier Bernard to St James' Park from Lyon four years ago and the club will be hoping the youngster will follow his compatriot's example and go on to establish himself as a key member of the first team.
Watch out, Zogs about!
