Hell yeas. Lyon are amazing and are always under rated with other teams. I know they will go far this season in CL. Nous sommes la meilleure équipe, et rien ne peut nous arrêter de prendre un autre championnat. Et que quelque chose que nous méritons véritablement! Juninho Pernambucano a jamais! :) Thankfully, I've got french blood aswell. Infact, I was born in Lyon.

Mwoah, it was more due to Real being crap than Lyon being brilliant, although there were phases were they showed Real all corners of the pitch.

They couldnt even beat PSV last year ;)

nikos24

No, Lyon were brilliant. Madrid était absolument la Foutaise. Lyon was amazing at most of the times. Though, the first 10 minutes, they were looking nervous. But after the first goal, it was all Lyon. And they could have afforded to have missed that penalty and still win comfortably. Thats just how good they were. Brillant Lyon. Allez Lyon!

PSV Eindhoven. On penalties too. It was 1-1 after extra time. 2-2 on aggregrate. I would have loved to see Lyon tackle Milan. Anyway, its PSV.

He will became a future star of world football. :)

He was the best player in the Montaigut Cup, and he scored 7 goals. He is the star of France U17 with Jérémy Menez. Ben Arfa is already in the first team of Lyon. He has a perfect technic, beautiful shot on goal, a very good vision of game and a good pass game. At only 17 years old, he will become a very great player of football. Lyon would challenge for a top 4 spot in England at the very least. Abidal, Malouda, Diarra, Arfa, Juninho, Pedretti, Fred, Wiltord, Carew and Govou are all excellent players who would make an impact in the Premiership. Shame Paul Le Guen decided to call it a day at the end of last season though.

I saw one game Lyon vs Marseille, and for the first goal (it was either 1-0 or 2-0) he skinned about 3, or 4 players before slotting it into the bottom corner, pure brilliance.

Charlie

Scholes isnt injured. But you are right, he is coming to an end.

Honestly, I don't see Juninho leaving Lyon. Iff you watch him, after every goal he scores, he holds and kisses the Lyon badge with all his heart. and he does that purposely, he loves the club a lot. Juninho is so loyal. And i wouldn't want to see Juninho leave, I respect the guy deeply. I'm tired of "small clubs" players move to big clubs. I think Lyon shuld be considered as a big team.

Juninho wouldn't cost as much as he is in his 30's now and Essien is about 22.

Juninho wouldn't be a replacement for Scholes as he is a right-winger. He has many great attributes, aswell as being the best set-piece taker in the world, he is good at dribbling, crossing, passing and shooting. One of the top 5 right wingers in the world in my opinion, alongside the likes of Joaquin and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Some of you are talking about their players going to great clubs while you forget that Lyon is a great club, actually the best club in France at the moment, and one of the forces to beware in the Champions League. If they win the french league again, which is very likely, and do well in the CL many players will be looking forward to being signed by this club.

It IS a great club, but not to the eyes of teams like Chelsea or United. I don't think so. Lyon is like a benefiter to those kind of big clubs, they will produce one hell of a talent, and then one big club just comes and want to sign their big players. Always been like that. If only Lyon wins the CL, then thats when they will be reckoned as a dangerous force. And I hope it happens trust me mon ami, it's exactly like that.

Lyon is a big club, but they'll never get up to the level of teams like Chelsea, Barca, Real, Juve, Milan because of the league they play in. The French league is obviously a decent league, because Lyon are very strong and Monaco got to the Champions League final only last year, but it is not as well respected as the Premiership, La Liga or Serie A, and probably never will be. They will probably never have a better chance of winning the Champions League than this to be honest.

Lyon 2-1 Olympiakos.. We are on the brink of qualifying. We just need one more point to achieve this. Juninho Permabucano once again scores a delightful freekick 17 yards out. Pantelis Kafes' dink shot was class and it managed to beat Coupet and his cleansheets for this season. Although, Govou had the final laugh. As he latched on to a Juninho Pernambucano cross and volleyed it over the on rushing Nikopolidis, with one minute left. Hurting for Olympiakos, as they could have gotten two draws both away at Madrid and last night. Anyway, Lyon, three points.:)

FC Metz 0-4 Olympique Lyonnais

Lyon earned a comprehensive win at FC Metz to maintain their unbeaten start to the season and open up a seven-point lead atop Ligue 1. Florent Malouda was the inspiration, teeing up first-half goals for John Carew and Sylvain Wiltord either side of Juninho Pernambucano's 36th-minute strike. Malouda then sealed an impressive victory five minutes after the restart with his first goal of the season.

It was a clinical display by a Lyon side without regular wing-backs Eric Abidal and Anthony Réveillère, both of whom were rested by coach Gérard Houllier. The former Liverpool FC manager also started with Sidney Govou, whose late goal earned the French side victory against Olympiacos CFP on Wednesday, on the bench.

Houllier said: "I'm satisfied because we avoided complacency following the Olympiacos win. We remained focussed and the players that came into the side played well.

Both teams have secured spots, Lyon 1st and Rosenborg 3rd, so this should be a pretty laid back match.

Rosenborg are missing their 3 starting mids. Lyon will probably field a reserve team. In case of injury.

That Carew goal was amazing and new to the eye. Well, atleast for some time. Like I said before, all the quality goals for this season till now, have been in Group D. I must praise Carew for that, simply breathtaking goal, made it look so easy, and Casillas was humbled yes. Juninho could have scored again with a freekick from 28 yards out i think. Half the ground and commentary thought it was in, I can only see bright things for my beloved Lyon.

Alright, time to update this. Lyon's last Ligue 1 game was against Lille OSC. Despite playing at home, and having a slight advantage, Lille scored first through Odemwingie, the Nigerian starlet. 0-1 at half-time. Second start, roughly 20 minutes on, Lille scores again! Through Debuchy if I can remember clearly. Although few more minutes later, Govou (5 goals now in the season, and is likely to earn a new cap when France play Slovakia) hit one back to make it 1-2. Instant reply though from Dumont condemned us to our first defeat since that elimination from AS Nantes in the French League Cup. But no worries, still very much clear, a good Christmas present for Lyon. :).

Anyway, next up, away at RC Strasbourg in the Ligue, Wednesday January 4.

RC Strasbourg 0-4 Lyon

We are hot. Simple as that. Im sure we are going to win the Ligue 1 once again. Strasbourg were meant to be fierce opponents, and considering they were at home, they had a formidable record. But, Lyon, destroyed them. Haha. Wiltord, who scored against them last season in the corresponding fixture, scored again this time, a hat-trick. Sylvain was simply great during the whole game. Berthod's efforts were rewarded with a goal, sanwiched by Wiltord's hat-trick. Fred hit the post twice man, tsk. Anyway, didnt matter. We got off to a strong start, and in the sixth minute, Wiltord already scored. Check that goal out, was fantastic. Berthod got on the scoresheet few minutes later. 0-2 at halftime. 15 minutes after the restart, Wiltord put Lyon 0-3 ahead. And to complete his hat-trick, his third goal was 15 minutes before the end of time. Top of the Ligue 1.

Next up, away at Grenoble. Coupe de France. January 8.

By the way, Happy Birthdays to Benhamida who celebrates it on 18th January. And Coupet who celebrated his on December 31st. ;)

Grenoble 0-4 Olympique Lyon

Coupe de France result. And now Lyon are in the final 16.

Wow. A terrific match and an even better performance from Lyon. Watching Lyon domination from start to end is simply great. Benzema, the youngster, gave us an early two goal lead which really set out the tone of the game. He had a fabulous night, and his two goals reflect it. Early on, at the 23' and 30' minutes, he had his goals. He then turned provider for Mahmadou Diarra to score his first goal in the French Cup on the 52' minute. Then 15 minutes from time, Benny (Hatem Ben Arfa) made a fabulous run, and a simple finish to demolish Grenoble and knock them out of the French Cup. Grenoble really looked like never threathening at all. Govou, Wiltord, Reveiller and Berthod were rested. Bravo boys, Bravo Lyon.

Next up. Home to Marseille, Ligue 1 (Big game), 11th January.

Lyon - Marseille.

Tonight.

Its 1st meets 7th. 15 points separates these two. At the moment, both teams have a their strongest squad and will play them to full effect. Gerrard Houllier though is thinking whether to start Ben Arfa in place of Malouda, but may be risky. Ben Arfa played very well last time against Grenoble, whatever happends, both will definitely have a part in the fixture. Kalid Benzema is also included in the squad after his two goals against Grenoble. I see Fred and Carew starting again. But Frau is not included, i really dont think Gerrard Houllier fancies him for Lyon. Anyway, Lyon will be looking to win (as usual) to extend their lead on top of Ligue 1 to an incredible 14 points. Let's go! :)

Lyon 2-1 Marseille

Tiago 53', Govou 82' - Lamouchi 18'

Before i report, i want Newcastle fans to know that Abdoulaye Meite played so well and almost, just almost wouldn't let us win for the first time at our home this season. Great performance by him, i applaud it. ;)

Now to the report. That was one great match. Especially the second half, very exciting. I was a bit worried though, Lamouchi gave Marseille the lead early on. It was a good goal and i wont say it was fluke, they deserve it after they were taking the game to us. But come second half, we were different. Class performance we gave. Tiago equalized with a neat finish after a layoff from none other than Juninho on the 53' minute. Then after that we completely controlled the game and i felt that Lyon dont want to give up this game too easily that they were playing with all their spirit. Marseille and Meite were so solid! Couldn't break them down, until a very big piece of fortune fell on our side. On the 82', Juninho found space on the right, he managed to cross only for Dehu to head it away, but it proved to be a deadly mistake as Govou hit a stunning volley well outside the penalty area to earn us the three points, and an incredible 14 points ahead. It was outstanding, and Stade Gerland were very happy with the result and performance, performance of champions. Lyon, Allez! Allez! Allez Lyon! :D

How i wish we play the big teams in Europe even Barca if we get to beat PSV that is. I want them to go to Stade Gerland! ;)

Next up, away to Nancy on January 14. They are the 11th side in Ligue 1 and they beat Lens away from home last night,. I expect a tough game, but still i feel, we can come up with another victory. ;)

Nancy 0-2 Lyon.

Wonderful, once again, Lyon wins and are unbeaten at the moment for this year. Four out of four, incredible stuff. Nancy this week, the victims. You could see that Nancy were really pushing Lyon to the limits for their fans, but couldn't find the magic to break Lyon down. It was a rather lacklustre performance from Lyon in the first half. The second half though, we took only 5 minutes to score for in the 50' minute, Claudio Cacapa scored the first goal of the game. After a neat pass from Benzema (Who is getting better every game tbh), Claudio just finished things off with a sweet kick into the bottom left of the goal. 7 minutes before the end though, when Nancy were really trying to get that equalizer, we scored against the run of play. Benzema attempted a long drive which deflected off Chretien which resulted into a corner. Wiltord (instead of Juninho who was out injured) took the corner and Fred finished the game heading in the second goal and his 6th goal if the season. Bravo Lyon! Allez Lyon! Allez, allez Lyon!

There are three more games to go before Matchday 23.

Next up for the mighty champions who are aiming for the 5th straight title, is home to Auxerre who are third placed and did well to beat Lens in their last game. Interesting it should be. I expect 3-1. ;)

This needs some revival.

Lyon 0-0 Bordeaux, Matchday 25.

.Oh well, that cuts our lead on top of Ligue 1 to 9 points but with a game in hand against Monaco. But hey, atleast we haven't lost. For once, a team managed to hold to a goalless draw, and that's the first time that we haven't scored at home for all season. Anyway, game was very nice. Though the result I didn't enjoy. Like I said, if we continue to work and develop in getting that goal during the first half, then I believe things will go our way, no matter what. Unfortunately, It didn't happen last night. But I was happy, Wiltord was bloody amazing last night. Hitting the post twice, and playing so good, almost perfect passes. Juninho led the way and attack, but somehow couldn't get past through Bordeaux. Talk about tight defences. Since Juninho has been captain in place of the injured Cacapa, we haven't really been getting the results we want. Like a draw last night, a hard-fought win over Ajaccio that even went to extra time in the Coupe de France and the dissapointing 1-1 home draw with Auxerre. Can't wait for Cacapa to come back. He is one hell of a captain, we need our defense back, Reveillere, Abidal, Berthod and Monsoreau! Anyway, it's away to Lens next time out. Lens have been on a rather poor form due to most of their stars being at the African Cup. Allez Lyon!

Latest News

Lyon RB Sylvain Monsoreau for up to six weeks. :(. Now, it's Abidal, Berthod, Cacapa and Reveillere all injured. Although Berthod is nursing his minor injury. Cacapa is cooming back soon to enforce our defense back together and get back positive results. I hope they all recover in time to play PSV, I am starting to worry, :(. Only Cris is now our starting regular, the rest are youngsters.

Ligue 1 leaders Olympique Lyon will be chasing their first league victory for a month when they visit Racing Lens on Saturday.
The four-times champions are top of the 20-club table but their lead has been cut from 14 to nine points by Bordeaux over recent weeks.

Lyon, struck by a string of injuries, were held to draws in their last two outings against Auxerre and Bordeaux while their match at Monaco scheduled for Jan. 29 was postponed because of a flooded pitch.

"There is no need to start panicking," said goalkeeper Gregory Coupet. "Our recent results have only confirmed that we are merely human beings.

"We have had to deal with a couple of problems. Some training sessions were disrupted by the bad weather and several players got injured. It has only confirmed that the title race is far from over," Coupet said.

Defender Sylvain Monsoreau tore a thigh muscle during a French Cup match at AC Ajaccio last week and will be out for up to six weeks.

Monsoreau joined captain Claudio Cacapa, international defenders Anthony Reveillere and Eric Abidal, and Jeremy Berthod on the casualty list.

"We'll soon believe we are cursed," said midfielder Florent Malouda, who is likely to start Saturday's match in an unaccustomed defensive position.

In their first meeting in September, Lyon salvaged a 1-1 draw, Portuguese midfielder Tiago hitting a late equaliser for the champions.

"I remember the match pretty well," said Coupet. "Lens gave us a hell of a lot of trouble. They were strong.

"We look at the match on Saturday as an important step on the road towards a fifth title," Coupet said.

Bordeaux will look to narrow the gap on Lyon further when they host troubled Stade Rennes.

Bordeaux, who have leaked only 12 goals from 24 matches and only one from their last seven outings, are unbeaten this year while the Brittany side are on a four-match losing run.

PSV Eindhoven 0-1 Lyon :D

Juninho strike leaves Lyon on top
Tuesday, 21 February 2006

A second-half free-kick from Juninho Pernambucano put Olympique Lyonnais on course for a place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals after a 1-0 victory against PSV Eindhoven at the Philips Stadion.

Govou dismissed
Following an even first half, the French champions stepped up the pace after the interval, and eventually got their reward on 64 minutes when they won a free-kick 25 metres from goal. Inevitably it was Brazilian midfielder Juninho who stepped up and he did not disappoint, striking a fierce, swerving drive that completely deceived compatriot Heurelho Gomes in the PSV goal. The visitors looked to press home their advantage but were forced to defend for the last ten minutes after Sidney Govou was dismissed for a second yellow card.

Defensive honours
The win will go some way towards avenging last season's quarter-final defeat by PSV, and was largely down to a fine performance from a makeshift defence which saw recent signing Patrick Müller make his 50th UEFA Champions League appearance alongside Brazilian Cris. They helped subdue an attacking lineup of Jefferson Farfán and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, as Arouna Koné was confined to the substitutes' bench.

Coupet acrobatics
PSV almost took the lead in the first minute when Ibrahim Afellay's cross was met with force by the head of Vennegoor of Hesselink and only an acrobatic save from Lyon goalkeeper Grégory Coupet kept the scores level. Minutes later Coupet's opposite number Gomes was forced to scramble off his line to prevent Govou latching on to Michael Reiziger's weak back-pass as Lyon slowly established territorial advantage. But PSV remained dangerous on the break, with Afellay particularly menacing on the left.

Blistering strike
In Juninho, Lyon have one of the best free-kick exponents in world football, but PSV revealed one of their own on 15 minutes when Farfán was brought down. Up stepped Alex, and the Brazilian defender's blistering drive grazed the crossbar as the helpless Coupet watched on. The set-piece was one of a series awarded to either team in a scrappy period in which André Ooijer received treatment for a head wound, and Cris for a knock.

Chances created
Lyon midfielder Florent Malouda screwed an effort high and wide when well placed midway through the half, before PSV's Belgian international Timmy Simons saw his cross-cum-shot slip narrowly past the post as both sides created opportunities. With half-time approaching a bustling run from John Carew ended in a well-struck shot from the edge of the box that flew across Gomes's goal. Moments later Vennegoor of Hesselink went even closer, but not close enough, with a flashing header.

Lyon pressure
The second half started briskly, with Carew and Phillip Cocu missing chances at either end before Sylvain Wiltord, a half-time replacement for Cris, drilled an effort well past Gomes's right-hand post. Lyon continued to press, and Gomes had to stretch to keep out Mahamadou Diarra's rasping drive. PSV substitute Ismaïl Aissati then cleared a Carew header off the line just before the hour mark, and eventually the mounting Lyon pressure told.

Juninho attempt
Juninho's free-kick bamboozled Gomes but the goalkeeper went some way towards atoning for that error when he beat out a fierce drive from another Brazilian, Lyon substitute Fred soon after. By the time the French team's attacking impetus had been curtailed by Govou's dismissal, Koné had replaced Afellay. The Ivorian had a gilt-edged opportunity late on when sent clear by Vennegoor of Hesselink's header, but hit the post as Lyon took a significant step towards the quarter-finals.

Stam has an injury so is unlikely to play. Maldini doesn't seem fit enough to start. Defence looks like:

What do you expect the starting line-up to be?

Ours should be: Dida; Costacurta, Nesta, Kaladze, Serginho, Ambrosini*, Pirlo, Seedorf, Kaka, Shevchenko, Gilardino.

*The choice is between Ambrosini and Vogel. I get the feeling Ancelotti considers Ambrosini the more solid player of the two and, being away from home, will choose to start with him in a defensive move.

Bishop, yes Juninho is suspended tonight.

Ah, but still power in Lyon. We won at Munich, so we can get a result against Milan, hehe.

Sweey

I think you should be more confident. Milan looked extremely impressive against Munich and Juninho being out makes a big difference. Most of Lyon's goals this year in europe seem to come through him in some way

Sweey
29-03-2006, 11:11
But he's missing the home leg. It would be nicer if he was out for the away leg as one of his free-kicks couldn't lead to a precious away goal in that event.

Would you be confident with a 39-year-old less than two months from his 40th birthday playing at right-back when the goalkeeper behind him keeps making stupid mistakes?

Replace who? Juninho? Whenever he doesn't play, they usually rest Diarra and Juni and put on Clement and Pedretti. Houllier has been doing that for almost a month now, he really wants those youngsters to get ready just incase they would be needed, maybe even tonight. Anyway, it's thought that Fred and Carew is to start, Wiltord on the right. Juninho Tiago middle while Malouda is one the left flank. Houllier is undecided on whether it's Cris or Muller. I prefer Muller though just for now, I think he can do a good job against Sheva. Cacapa, Clerc :D and Abidal the other part of the defence. What's your prediction guys? As for the league and French Cup, if we get the double, I'll ofcourse be happy but it won't be enough to cover up this night. Anyway, bravo x1000000 Lyon, bravo! You did me proud. Ferguson will also be scouting Gattuso. Inzaghi deserved to score at least one - he got two in the end as we know. Despite what people think of him, he's a very good striker. Annoying to others, yes, but he's damn good at what he does and the only member of our strikeforce who could've scored that second.

A bit below 25 man. This is just a rough sketch. 10 times in the league since Reveillere was injured, and 4 times in the Champions League starting with PSV. So around the 15 mark. Lol - last minute goal against them at the weekend. No wins in the League this year and knocked out of the cup ?

Whats up with the defense ?

Yes exactly.

O7 has not been a good year so far at all!

1 draw, 4 (3 in a month) losses.

It all started with Toulouse were we lost 2-0. Then losing at home for the first time this season to Bordeaux. One week later, drawing at home to Nice.

The that was followed by..

Losing to Marseille in the French Cup. 1-0 to us until the 88th minute when they equalized, they got the winning goal on the 90th minute! Out of the French Cup.

And just a few nights ago, losing to 17th placed Troyes. :shocking:

Oh, they scored in the 94th minute. =/

If it's anything to do with Carew departing, oh well, Baros has not been that great. 1 goal in 4 games and he was really poor in the Marseille match.

Tell you what, just give us time, we'll bounce back. ;)

On the other hand, I take it Carew is doing well at Villa yeah?

What on earth is Houllier thinking in signing him.

The fuck? Is that a sure thing? Duscher coming over? I'll check on that, either way, I don't know anything about him apart from being a defensive midfielder. We already have Toulalan, Diarra, Santos and Tiago, now we are deciding to bring this guy over?

Diarra and Toulalan are injured but should be back soon, while Santos looked impressive in his first game for Lyon against Lorient.

@Devil, it looks a possibility (because Kim is already a sub, briging in Duscher will just make it worse for him) but I don't think it is going to happen and I certainly don't want that.

To better news.

Juninho signs one year extension till 2009

Juninho Pernambucano has extended his contract with French champions Lyon until 2009.

The free-kick expert, who signed from Brazilian club Vasco da Gama in 2001, may stay even longer according to club president Jean-Michel Aulas.

"[Juninho] had a contract until 2008 with an option," said Aulas. "We have just prolonged it until 2009.

"He [also] told me he would really like to stay until 2010. I said we would respond about that before the end of February."

Juninho, 32, has won five straight Championnat titles with Lyon, plus two Brazilian championships and the Copa Libertadores with Vasco.

And, can anyone teach me how to multi-quote?

I think Lyon will draw in Rome. Roma have been poor since the Christmas break and I can't see them winning this game. I think a 2-2 draw tonight and a 2-0 win for Lyon in France. Being a fan of Roma, I hope I am wrong, but for sure(I sound like Rafa Benitez) it will be a cracking match...unfortunately for me, stupid UEFA put the game on the same day as Porto vs Chelsea

Why is everyone so down on Baros - he has played well for every team he has played for except Villa, and obver the years there have been quite a few players with similar experiences at Birmingham's 3rd team (behind Blues and West Brom) eg Milosevic who scores for fun for every team he has ever played for except Villa

Had to laugh at another David Platt classic quote.

In reference to Juninho's 50 yard swerving free-kick which troubled the goalkeeper:

"He can strike the ball just like Cristiano Ronaldo can hit the ball!"

Hahaha. Brilliant.

The tie is left right in the balance now. An away goal could have been priceless, but I fancy Lyon to make it through, just.

What a shitty game to watch for a Roma fan... frustrating as hell. I didn't like the reffing much I must say, he showed too many cards around and so the players were hamming it up like crazy for most of the game. 4 freekicks in a row for Roma called for fouling in the box... good times.

Roma were not clicking, they were rushing the plays a lot and only looked fiery for brief periods. They looked excellent in the final third but horrible trying to get there. Roma are very good at one touch passing and movement but today it seems like that approach was negated by Lyon's excellent marking... correct me if I'm wrong but they seemed like a very quick team in the midfield (Lyon). Maybe Roma was just sluggish. Oh well. That game desperately needed an early goal to give it a kick in the ass :D

22-02-2007, 09:02
Who the hell was that ref?!? Who's this Mike Riley? Damn him, more yellow cards around that goal attempts.

What is important is that we didn't concede and above all, did not lose. However, I would still prefer to draw 1-1 instead of 0-0, it's still a tricky tie this. Roma only need a goal to make things bad for us at Gerland, but knowing us playing at home on European nights, hah. ;)

Im happy for the result but not the way the game went.. They were kicking Juninho all around!

Toulalan got a yellow card? For.. what? Totti is quite good in acting. Now he will be missing in the next game.

I thought that our defence was pretty good and the fact that Squillaci is starting to prove himself more and more now. A few more games like this, he is certainly worth the first team spot.

Cris was solid and marked Totti throughout the game, I was also impressed with Malouda and Juninho's efforts.

Closest we came to was the two free kicks from Juninho, including that 50 yard attempt!

The game's tempo was usually yellow card, free kick, yellow card, yellow card, free kick..

But I am happy nonetheless. A good result to bring back at home considering the form we have been in too, lately.

Allez Lyon! :D

Quick reminder peeps, Lyon Roma tonight, the decisive leg. We've somehow got our form again in Ligue 1 after beating rivals St. Etienne at their dirty stadium 3-1 last week. But before that, we needed two late goals to draw at home to Sochaux. :/

Obviously I want to win, but I don't think we will come blazing like we have previous CL games. 1-0 to the good. Allez!

Teams for both, us sticking to the usual 4-4-3, the same exact team that played Roma only that Toulalan is out of this game, and so Diarra steps up. Wiltord is also ready.

Lyon: Grégory Coupet.

Anthony Réveillère, Sébastien Squillaci, Cris, Eric Abidal.

Tiago, Alou Diarra, Juninho Pernambucano.

Sidney Govou, Florent Malouda.

Fred.

Roma: Doni.

That first hour against St Ettiene looked amazing. I only saw the highlights but what a performance to go 3 up, including a free kick by Fred that Juninho would have been proud of.

If they play anything like that Roma wont know what hit them.

Interesting comments by Baros as well - he says there are many things in England that the referees let go unpunished yet in France they are called as fouls. Glad to see that at least the French referees are better than ours - They may not be great but still better thans ours

That was an absolute disgrace. He should receive a minimum of a 3 game ban and fine. He tried to elbow him once or twice before he eventually succeeded.

Horrible challenge by Juninho too, but fortunately he didn't make as much contact as he might have.

What a sad sad morning. :(

Ok, disregarding the challenge from Fred/Juni (which I know was disgraceful), we were just simply outshined by Roma. We had more of the chances and possession but it was 2 situations always. 1. Their defence especially Mexes was brilliant or 2. Doni was there to rescue them, not just once or twice, but many times.

I also think it's fair to say without Doni, Roma wouldn't keep a cleansheet.

When Wiltord came in the second half, I had hopes re-ignited again as he is always in the thick of our memorable games, but not this one.

Benzema did OK but why not try Baros at this stage? Couldn't say much about our midfield as we were restricted to just passing long balls to Fred who was very much ineffective on the night. Sub Kallstrom even performed better, and like I said earlier, if it wasn't for Doni Kim would have gotten a goal. Super save.

The oppositions goals, especially Mancini, that was really nice although I hated seeing it go in.

Cris seemed to have a hot temper last night and if it was another referee, he'd probably be sent off much earlier. Squillaci was the defender that stood out for me despite conceding, he always did his best marking Totti which isn't easy for anyone..

We all played well, it's just that Roma were fully prerared for us and especially Juninho as they weren't looking to give away any fouls at all.

Still proud.

I think some people are being a bit harsh on Fred. Ok he deserved to be sent off but in his defense his arm was straight when he swang it back. When people use their elbow to hurt someone they seem to bend their arm to catch someone with the point of the elbow, Fred seem to catch him with his whole arm.

Unfortunately this is the type of thing that in my opinion is caused by the referee. The defender was obviously leaning all over Fred and in the end he realised that he was getting no protection from the officials so swung out in frustration - yet another player being punished because the referees didnt do their job.

A lot man, a lot.

Speaking of a lot, this thread needs a lot of updating. Lyon are still top of the table with 66 pts, high-flying Toulouse with 52, Lens with 50 and on-form Sochaux below the top three with 47 pts.

Matchday 31 had some interesting results. Marseille 4-1 Lille! Civelli got two goals in the game along with Niang's double. We drew Valenciennes 0-0. They become the fifth team in the whole season to stop us from scoring. Le Mans lost at home to PSG. Luyindula and Diane were among the scorers.

March was the month for Betafimbi Gomis. He's quite a prospect, and even without Ilan and Piquionne's departure, he's sparked up St. Etienne oh and he won the Player of the Month award. Mark my words.. he'll be big. April is hotting to be a tight contest. Marseille duo Civelli and Niang are candidates along with Saifi (Lorient) and Diane (PSG). My money on Diane, he's been brilliant lately. He has either assisted or won the match for PSG these past few days.

Honestly, I wouldn't like to PSG relegated. They're starting a major push that could see them escape. For a start, Landreau and as I have mentioned Diana are in the team and they don't deserve this punishment. Just aslong as they do no qualify for Europe, it'll be cool. It won't happen anyway. ;)

Matchday 32 saw Valenciennes draw Marseille 0-0 too.

Matchday 32 was cursed, there were only two games that goals in them; Lille 2-0 (Fauvergue, Mirallas) and Toulouse 2-0 (Emana, Mansare).

Lens dropped two points and failed to maintain that second spot (which Toulouse now occupy with their win) after drawing with Nantes 0-0. Dimitri Payet, check him out, looks to one for Nantes' future. Exciting player.

The other result worth mentioning was the 0-0 draw with Le Mans and Rennes. The impressive trio of Thomert, Briand and Utaka led the way for Rennes, but another impressive performance from Le Mans keeper Simon Pouplin helped his team climb up to the 11th position on the table. Rennes remaing 9th.

Games currently in progress

Nice - St. Etienne (Big game)
Lyon - AS Sedan

Newsflash

We are five points away from winning Ligue 1 a record of 6 times. If we beat Sedan tonight and another three points at Auxerre on 22nd April, history will be made. If not, this is how we are going to end our season.

Auxerre (A), Le Mans (H), PSG (A, Oh I'd love to win the title here! :w00t), Lens (H), AS Monaco (A), Nantes (H).

Games to watch out for towards the end of this season.

Matchday 33 PSG-Nantes
Matchday 34 Bordeaux-Lens, Toulouse-PSG
Matchday 35 St. Etienne-Lille
Matchday 36 Toulouse-Le Mans, Nice-PSG
Matchday 37 St. Etienne-Marseille, Lens-Toulouse, Nancy-Sochaux
Matchday 38 Sochaux-St. Etienne, Toulouse-Bordeaux

Top Goalscorers:

1- Steve SAVIDAN (13 goals, Valenciennes)
2- Ismael BANGOURA (11 goals, Le Mans)
3- Aruna DINDANE (11 goals, Lens)
4- FRED (10 goals, Lyon)
5- Bafetimbi GOMIS (10 goals, St. Etienne)

Now we have to wait for 21st away to Auxerre. We only need two more points to secure the title, which means we can lift the Cup in Auxerre if we beat them or we can draw/lose providing Toulouse lose aswell.

AH! No problem, we'll get bag this s.o.b at their stadium. Allez Lyon.

This is a tremendous b-day gift for me, couldn't ask for more and has just simply made my day. Now just waiting till the end of the season to get those priceless trophy-team shots. :)

Following the 0-0 draw with Auxerre we became officially champions not through this game but via second placed Toulouse losing to Rennes 3-2, that loss confirmed our championship.

Other results this round:

PSG 4-0 Nantes (Pauleta double along with Rothen and Luyindula)
Lens 2-0 Le Mans
Marseille 2-1 Troyes
AS Monaco 3-1 OSC Lille (Have been Lille been in one shit form lately)
Nancy 1-0 Valenciennes
Rennes 3-2 Toulouse (Bravo!)
Sedan 1-1 Nice
Sochaux 1-1 Lorient

Relegation battle is still on fire with Nantes (who dropped three precious points) on 20th spot (30 pts), followed by Sedan (31 pts) and Troyes occupying 18th (32 pts). Nice are 17th 5 points ahead while PSG climb up to 15th level on points fellow strugglers Valenciennes (38 pts), telling times are ahead for the bottom three clubs.

Next round:
Toulouse - PSG
Lille - Nancy
Lorient - St. Etienne
Lyon - Le Mans
Nantes - Rennes
Nice - Auxerre
Troyes - Sedan
Valenciennes - AS Monaco

Bordeaux - Lens
Marseille - Sochaux

All that's left is to determine who gets relegated and the final 2 spots for CL next season. Very very tight between spots number 2 - 13 (Just shows how competitive this league can be).

RC Lens are 2nd with 53 pts while Bordeaux and Toulouse are both on 52. Marseille are 5th with 49 and Rennes, Sochaux share 48. Lille are 8th with their 46 pts. St. Etienne and Lorient have 45 pts. And finally Auxerre, AS Monaco and Le Mans are all on level points with 44.*

* In order

Like I said, very tight and we still have no idea who is going to get these final spots and who will take the UEFA Cup entries. Promises to be a good race with 5 rounds left to go.

Anyway.... Great job guys! I'm very proud of this achievement. We have the tag of being the big fish in a small pool but I say it's down to our spirit and mentality getting all these championships. To think, we were once relegation favourites not too long ago. Allez Lyon! Bravo!!:w00t

Interesting piece. :w00t

With Lyon having wrapped the 2006/07 Ligue 1 title up with Rennes’ help over the weekend, there are still a number of records in sight for Gérard Houllier’s side this season.

Out of the continent's five major leagues (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and England), Lyon are the first to capture six consecutive championship titles. In doing so, they have beaten the record of five held by some of Europe's best teams:

Real Madrid: 1961 – 1965 and 1986 – 1990 (5, on both occasions)
Juventus: 1931 – 1935 (5)
Torino: 1943 – 1949 (5, league interrupted because of the Second World War)

Out with the five major leagues, several teams have dominated their championships with the following winning up to 14 consecutive league titles:

Skonto Riga: 1991 – 2004 (14)
Rosenborg: 1992 – 2004 (13)
Glasgow Celtic: 1966 – 1974 (9)
Glasgow Rangers: 1989 – 1997 (9)

In winning the championship five 'rounds' before the end of the season, Lyon have broken another record. In 1968 and 1970, Saint-Etienne won the French first division with four days to go, a similar feat achieved by Nantes in 1977, exploits now consigned to the history books.

With 12 victories away from home accrued so far this season, Lyon need win just one more away from the Stade Gerland to set a new Ligue 1 record. In season 1969/70 Saint-Etienne won a dozen away from home, the same number achieved by Marseille in 1971/72. In fact, should Lyon win one of their games against PSG (Matchday 35) or Monaco (Matchday 37), 'Les Gones' will break their own record of away victories in one season set by themselves last year.

Another record in Lyon's sights is the number of points won in a single season (84). Set, once more, by themselves (in season 2005/06), Gérard Houllier's side need to win all of their last five matches to do so, an effort which would see them finish the season on 86 points. Indeed, should Lyon complete a 100% finish to the season they will end the 2006/07 campaign with 26 wins, equalling another Ligue 1 record set by Reims (1960), Monaco (1961) and Nantes (1966 and 1980).

Lyon's Six Titles

2001/2002 66 pts
Top scorer: Sonny Anderson (14)
Biggest win: 4-0, v Marseille (h) and Rennes (h)

2002/2003 68 pts
Top scorer: Juninho (13)
Biggest win: 6-1, v Sedan (h)

2003/04 79 pts
Top scorer: Peguy Luyindula (16)

2005/06 84 pts
Top scorer: Fred (14)
Biggest win: 8-1, v Le Mans (h)

2006/07 ??

Title-winning thoughts:

Gérard Houllier (Lyon manager)

"I'm really pleased. Last year we set a new French record and this year we've set a European one. I'm also proud because of the fact that it is 20 years since Jean-Michel Aulas arrived at the club."

Florent Malouda (Lyon midfielder)

"After the season we have had, this title means a lot. People were criticising us when we were 18 points in front but it's like that, we knew. This title is one of which we are proud and means the same as any of the others. It's the sixth one in a row and we are in the process of re-writing the history books."

Juninho (Lyon midfielder)

"It's incredible to have won six championship titles. It confirms the greatness of the club and also of the French league. I think it'll take a little while for it to be appreciated by others. To be involved in six title wins is a great feeling."

Next week again mes amis (Let me go celebrate! :w00t)

That would be a "coup de foudre", the man is our "crème de la crème" and he's on a "tour de force" this season :ninja:

If Ajax wins I will definitely hop on the train to Amsterdam. There's always riots and busstops being smashed but I'm not the violent type.

Who knows, with a few good signings Lyon style it might well be next year.

Skysports.com can confirm Hull are set to hold talks with Juninho over a possible move to The KC stadium.

Hull are lining up an ambitious swoop for the former Middlesbrough hero as they look to signal their intent in the Championship under new owner Paul Duffen.

Juninho is looking for a new club after leaving Flamengo last month and he is considering a return to England.

The Brazilian's agent Jonathan Hassall confirmed Juninho was set to meet Hull to discuss the possibility of moving back to England.

"It is true that we are planning to meet Hull to have talks over a move," Hassall told skysports.com

"Juninho is expected to fly into the country in the next 48 hours and we will then meet with Hull.

"We will go to see what Hull have got to say and what they have on offer.

"Juninho is keen on a move back to England as his heart has always been in England."

Hull could face a fight to sign the World Cup winner with clubs in Brazil and Qatar also chasing the diminutive playmaker.

What Martin_cranie and "God" already said is that THAT'S NOT LYON'S JUNINHO PERNAMBUCANO, but another player, called Juninho Paulista. He doesn't even look like Pernambucano.

Had to check, though, Pernambucano is one of my favorite players.

one goal was unfortunate, but the 2nd and third were due. Benzema looked rather tired by himself upfront, only when Baros came he started goin on his runs and taking on chances.

Yeah I know, amigo. I watched the game. He was pretty much invisible and so much for his trade mark freekicks.

What makes it worse is that Rangers are a painfully average side.

This has to be one of Lyon's most embarrassing results in recent years.

Q: How do you end a period of domestic dominance and european improvements?

A: Appoint someone who couldn't even get it right at Portsmouth, even with the help of a sugar-daddy.

That 3rd goal was just poor poor poor poor poor goalkeeping. If he'd just come out like he SHOULD HAVE, he could have picked the ball up with his teeth.

What a shocker.

Man after Liverpool, I was really hoping that a French club would take the CL this year. I really want the French League to be as popular as the other big leagues. I don't favor Marsielle to make the quarterfinals and well Lyon............ complete shit today.

I'm trying to give a post match analysis... but I can't. I too am shocked about the result and I don't know what to say. Today’s loss to Rangers was not just unexpected but also disastrous. It was like we went out there to lose.

First off, well done Rangers. I could say you were the underdogs coming into the game and so losing badly to you lot was hard to swallow.

Now to the team problem.. That was the worst match I’ve seen at Gerland - worse than Roma. Losing 3-0 at home to Rangers is bad, bad, bad and maybe we really don’t deserve to progress. In fairness though, up until the second half we were very dominant but just could not get through the Rangers defence, and then after the second goal we just gave up. I couldn't even spot a man of the match, just candidates for worst man of the match (Baros or Vercoutre probably).
Even worse after the third goal, most of the fans were just booing the team and they left early. This is not the OL Team we know. I heard Toulalan was sick and unable to play (the man who has played the best so far for Lyon along with Benzema) but then why keep him on the bench?? And why not put Fabio Santos the DM to help the defence tighten up?

In the match for us, I think Juni was easily our best player. Hit the post three times and made McGregor (?) save two excellent shots. But he said this after the game..

“Now we must ensure we finish third (for a UEFA Cup place). We can still qualify for the knockout stages but one has to be realistic.. we have conceded six goals in two matches and not scored one.”

:shocking: He's captain and he's not suppose to say that! It's like we've lost our winning mentality at all costs.

I think we can bag the UEFA Cup spot but hell no it's not over. We have back to back games w/Stuttgart and Barca w/Rangers. If and I hope this happens, we win both games and Barca win theirs too, then we are right back in it. And I guess those two wins will give us enough confidence again when we play Barca at home. (By that time, Coupet and Cris should be back).

We are still a really good team but we lack direction. Aulas was being a cheap bastard when he made Perrin the coach. We replaced our players pretty well over the summer but the coach sucks balls. Perrin you dumb ass. I think even w/out his "direction" we can win games on our own.. OK, I like the fact he tries and rotates the team but don't do this in the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE! where all the opponents are miles better and we only have 6 games not 38 to do this right.. I'm honestly fed up w/his favoured 4-4-2 formation. He's been doing that all season long and then come last night immediately to 4-3-3.. We need to time to adjust to this formation!

Having said all that.. I think at a point in the game, all the players gave up aswell. I don't know if we're not ready to play in big games or whatever the hell the reason was. We have to play well together and enjoy it.. then the results will come. Still, that's no excuse to give up the way we did last night.

We are not playing like the French champs we are supposed to be. Yes there was a lots of bad luck, but the good teams rise above that and triumph. OL 2005-2006 was a team of that...

But finally, I don't know if I even can complain too much. Thinking about it.. 6 years ago, what we have now.. we'd be over the moon. We are winning most of our Ligue 1 games, competing in the domestic Cups and playing with the big teams in the Champions League. This is how much progress we've made in the previous years. Let us just keep a cool head, get the necessary results to make it past the group stages and even if we don't win this CL.. atleast fall together for it.

Oh.. and I hope we get this Perrin "shitehole" out! Even Houllier was better!

From a Lyon standpoint, alot of things have to happen in order for us to reach The Champions League next season...currently 4th and all that gets us is a chance to rub shoulders with Liverpool and Manchester City in the Europa League -___-

Hopefully ye do, this years CL run has took its toll though and your squad needs to be strengthen if you are to compete in both the CL and domestically.

Lyon's squad is strong enough maybe they could use another defender or two but thats it. Hold on to Pjanic, Lloris and as long as Lisando keeps healthy than maybe just maybe next year you could challenge OM for the title. I sincerely doubt it though...
