View Full Version : Benfica
My God, how can this be? A thread about Porto and no thread about Benfica. Don't be ridiculous. I should've known of this sooner..
So, how is Benfica doing this season? We're playing nice attractive football and pulling off some nice performances. The start of the season wasn't that fantastic but Koeman finally arranged a good system. Although sometimes I don't get the guy. I mean, we could've won against United. Why on earth did he have to put Beto and not Geovanni from beginning? And why were we defending the draw when he said that we were going to play to win? What is he afraid of? If he's afraid at least don't tell the supporters and the players that we'll play to win. Against Villarreal here at Lisbon it was the same shit. Against Braga, yesterday the same thing. Damn you Koeman.
Now even though we were champions last year with Trapattoni, I didn't like the guy. Benfica was playing shit with him. It was horrbile to watch.
We were very lucky to win the championship, I tell thee. I don't get it. After Trapattoni left why didn't we sign Camacho? He was doing an excellent job at Benfica before going to Madrid (He won the Portuguese Cup against Mourinho's Porto champions league winner). But Koeman is alright, at least we're playing nice, attractive football and winning matches.
Today Benfica will play against Lille at Stade de France. This is crucial for us. Benfica needs to win. According to A Bola , portuguese most important sports newspaper, Miccoli will play but Simão won't! I think Simão needs a rest because he's not at 100% so it's no use playing him.
Léo will probably play as left winger and Ricardo Rocha on the left. I just hope he doesn't put Beto. We should play like this if we want to win:
---------------------R. Néreu-------------------------------
Nélson------Luisão--------Anderson----------R.Rocha--------
-----------------------Petit---------------------------------
-------------------------------M. Fernandes-----------------
Geovanni----------------Karyaka-----------------Léo---------
--------------------Nuno Gomes------------------------------
Or maybe Geovanni as left winger, Miccoli on the right, and Nélson would play on the entire right flank so that Miccoli could go to the middle...I don't know...We'll see.
I just hope Koeman plays to win from the beginning! We need this win! And we're Benfica for f*ck's sake! The opponents are Lille! Let's wipe them out! What is Benfica afraid of? Our team is far better!! Let's see if Koeman has the balls...:realmad:

Simão is leaving soon anyway. ;)
You've got a good manager in Koeman, I imagine you'll do well this season.
I sincerely hope not. He's the symbol of Benfica. I mean you think of Benfica and (nowadays) you automatically think of Simão. If we sell him we should ask at least for 20 million euros otherwise it's not worth it. It'll be very difficult to replace him, not only because he's a symbol of Benfica but also because he's our best player. We'll need someone better.
Yes, I'm happy with Koeman.
they will get about 13 million pounds for him
koeman is a good coach i also think the loan saigning of micolli was a good signing
we all hate porto but i am a man utd fan so i hate them even more

Does this mean there should be a thread about Sporting Lisbon? ;)
Just kidding, I know there is quite a few Benfica fans on this site.
Must have been a great game against Braga, would have liked to have seen it but unfortunately the Portuguese game of the week was Panafiel and Sporting.
Anyway, Benfica have a great chance of qualifying for the next knockout phase as the others in the group, Man Utd will be tough but in Champions League I can see Benfica overcoming them.
the way my team are playing its gonna be a close match i think it could be any one of the four to go through the game against benfica should be really good though as long as rooney ronaldo and simao are all playing

I dont think Koeman is a good coach at all. First of all, he's a defensive coach, who is too scared to risk a big loss, so he won't take any chances and rather play for safe, instead of going for the win with attacking, fast football.
Second of all, he will have fall-outs with players. He doesnt seem to be a very ncie or good personality.
3rd of all, in his years at Ajax, pretty much NONE of the players improved. Actually, most of the greatest talents fell into a form-crisis, like Van der Vaart, Sneijder, and many more. He doesnt give the players the freedom, confidence and responsibilities they should be given when they're playing, which makes them too affraid to make their own actions and decisions on the pitch, while trying desperately to remember and follow all the instructions the coach had given them before the match...
At Vitesse he was also nothing special...
A coach like Koeman just gets the coaching job because he was a great footballer. But not all good footballers make good coaches. So I'm wondering how long his coaching carreer will last. Ofcourse, people can learn from their mistakes, so perhaps Koeman will be a very different coach 10 years form now ... but the koeman that was at Ajax and Vitesse, was pretty mediocre...
Simão is supposed to be on the way to anfield ive heard they (Benfica) have struck a deal with Liverpool over him, it just depends on if Benfica get past the group stage which is a doubt now. So come on Simão let's be havin you. And let's hope the mank's help us get him as they need to beat Benfica to go through.
Daz_Rangers51 thank God you didn't watch Braga - Benfica. It was not that good even though it appears so because of the result. Benfica played awfully. All we did was defending the result, since we scored first and then we lost. I don't know what the fuck is wrong with Koeman. He's afraid of taking risks. It's prefrerable to lose a match but play to win it instead of losing one and doing nothing to win. If he doesn't want to take risks then he's not a coach for Benfica! We want Camacho! Con gañas, hombre! Qué mierda! For the second time I don't understand why didn't we sign Camacho after Trapattoni...
And then after Lille - Benfica Koeman was saying that he was very happy with his players and with the result. For God's sake. How can he say that? Against Lille? If the game was against Juventus I could understand...BUT LILLE? I don't get it honestly...And now against United I'll like to say how we're going to play...With 65 000 people in the stadium...I don't think he has the balls to play defensively...I hope that we win. I think that if we play our game we can win. I think we can beat him. We just have to play football. It's simply simple.
By the way, Koeman is only an offensive coach against shitty teams. I have to agree with Yi - Long. But he ain't as defensive as Trapattoni thank God.
personally i think any result in europe is a good result as it is the hardest cup competition in the world
Benfica are a great club, no doubt. Simao is a world class leader too. ;)
Lol, thats the only thing i could think about right now. Lol.

Defensive coach...yes. But Portuguese fans wants results, maybe even more than good football. He brought Ajax championships, brought us to the quarters of the CL(only to be halted by Milan, but thats a whole different story). He still has to learn a lot, he has his flaws of course.
The defensive, not all out style fits into the Portuguese competition, without condescending to that league of course.
mufcno1 against Lille a draw ain't a good result. If we had played with an attacking formation we would've won. Our team is far better. I know it isn't that simple but we would have more possibilities of winning!

The thing about the game against Lille is that he had to build a formation to win. It'll be more difficult to win against Manchester, even though I believe we can. We'll see...Simão won't play...:(
Oh Dorval, Sabrosa is not small, its just that referee is huge! I know him, Dutch i think. Bad luck tp us when he referees our games, i dont like him really. As for Simao, he wont play against Man.U? :(. Thats a big let down, but then again, a team is consisted of 11 players. With or without Simao, Benfica stand a strong chance, at the end of the day, they have their passionate home crowd behind their backs. I believe they can make it, and cause a huge shock.
Yer ive seen that ref before i thought he was from Sweden. Frigin massive he is. Makes Peter Crouch look small... joke by the way.
That fuggin referee!

Well nikos24, you seem to be very keen on Benfica. I appreciate that. Simão won't play for 4 weeks if I'm not mistaken. So we won't be seeing much of Simão...
Our next match is tomorrow against Belenenses at Estádio da Luz. Belenenses aren't doing very well at the moment so I'm hoping we can get a good result to lift up the morale.
Moreira won't play until next season so, seeing that Quim is injured our goalkeeper right now is Rui Néreu who did pretty well against Villarreal at El Madrigal.
Now, concerning new talents, apart from Manuel Fernandes (the new Coluna, as I like to say  ), we have Hélio Roque, Tiago Gomes and Nélson. Hélio Roque is a winger, Tiago Gomes is a left defender and Nélson our brand new right defender.
Hélio Roque on the left, with Tiago Gomes and João Pereira.

Right now it is the Orange Playlist, then a program starts at midnight called IRB sevens Series: Dubai.
Once they never showed the highlights and I'm wondering if they aren't showing the highlights, if not then you will have to stay up late and watch CL goals on SkySports News or wait until Monday for Champions League weekly, or that might not be on since it was the last games before Christmas.
EDIT: I dunno about you, but on STV it's Wiers Way after the programme I mentioned above, looks like we are not getting highlights.

does the benfica players usually conduct themselves in such a manner??
You were missing key players and yet managed to get through whilst facing a formidable opponent that was in full force. A great victory for Benfica.

No offense to the portuguese people in here but it's what they are known for.
That is true Daz_Rangers51. And I hate it. I hate it when players do that, either portuguese, brazilian etc..But I most say that even though we're known for that, brazilian players are worse. Remember when Porto won the Champions League (Carlos Alberto etc..)
LosGalacticos, Benfica players don't usually do that. But we needed it.

Great atmosphere last night it seemed. I watched most of the game, as the pub I was in had split the bar so Arsenal were on one half and United on the other. Needless to say the Arsenal half was pretty empty...

Well in about 2 and a half hours, Benfica will be playing Boavista at Estádio da Luz. Hopefully we'll win. Let's see how the players will play after the victory against Manchester.
I think the tactics will be the same:
Quim
Alcides
R.Rocha(Luisão is injured)
Anderson
Léo
Beto
Petit
Nélson
Nuno Gomes
Nuno Assis
Geovanni
I think it´s the best formation with the available players.I hope that they win today because Boavista is the team that is going to fight with Braga for UEFA.

That's right. This is not the thread of the team that crashed in Europe this year. This is the thread of the last year Portuguese champions. Because we all know who are going to be the champions this year. The mighty SC Braga!
maybe im a bite late to post this but "well played Benfica". i admire the win against Man U. even I didn't expect this result. I was thinking more of a Draw or a win for Man U. Hope they will get further in UCL! as a team they are very capable of achieving great results in UCL, even with those big teams waiting for them. gd luck guys
It is always nice to see people in other countries supporting a portuguese team.
Yes. We won against Boavista. 1-0. The scorer was Anderson from a corner. We dominated the whole match, but other teams goalkeepers seem to have wings whenever they play against Benfica.
Dorval, can Simao play on the right?
Great past two results! Excellent, Benfica just may be rising again! ;)
Yeah. Of course. But he plays better on the left.

Benfica won again. 1-0 against Nacional da Madeira. The scorer was Nuno Gomes. It was a difficult game since Nacional were playing very defensively. Damn these shitty teams, it ruins all the show. I mean if they're going to lose, at least try and attack maybe they can score a couple of goals. Anyway, we managed to win. Nuno Gomes is the top goalscorer of the Superliga with 12 goals. :D
Nuno Gomes has 11 goals, one more than Meyong.
we won against nacional but the goal shouldn't have been allowed :P luisão clearly charged the keeper. i'm worried that the team will lose their confidence once the better players return ( simão, manuel fernandes ) because they will try and pass the ball to them more often and we could become more predictable.
against man utd we played very well, and almost none of the "stars" were playing.
i also think simão has a tendency to shy away from important matches, like he's a bit scared, so i don't think he's our best player.
in my opinion, manuel fernandes is better ( they can't really be compared because they play in very different positions, of course ).
oh and simão is still a great player, make no mistake. he's just "not all that", imo.
anyway...

Simão doesn't shy away from important matches. He scored the 2nd goal when we won the cup against Porto, when Mourinho was still Porto's coach;he scored against United;he scored against Sporting...etc etc. He has given us so much that I don't think that comment of yours is fair. Anyway it's your opinion.
Also that thing about the team losing its confidence when the important players return, I don't think it will happen. What could happen is that the team will be more confident and less predictable since we'll be more balanced. If you remember, we also played well against United at Old Trafford, but then Koeman decided to defend in order to maintain the draw.Pussy coach!:realmad:
Manel Fernandes is world class. No doubt about that. He and Simão are my favourite Benfica players. Simão has played a lot more important matches than Manel, so I think they're not comparable at the moment.
But I'll never forget Villarreal 1-1 Benfica...Manel is king!

 My third favourite club in the world are in fact Boavista (thanks for beating us last week :realmad:) but we've just drawn 1-1 at home to Vitoria Guimaraes on a weekend when Setubal and Nacional both lost allowing Benfica to close in on second place.
As a Boavista fan, I can't stand Porto. My question is....now that Porto have begun to pull away and are playing with consistency, do you think Benfica and particularly Sporting, with their sketchy form, will be able to mount a serious title challenge? I know its early on in the season, but Sporting, for me the weakest of the big three, look unable to string a series of wins together.

First of all, and more important than anything, nice girls you have there.
Secondly, it was a nice goal by Anderson. We deserved to win, sorry mate but we need the points:laugh: . And may I ask a question: Why Boavista?
I kinda like Porto because they're a much similar club to Benfica than Sporting are. Sporting fans are all very rich and arrogant and are always whining because they don't win and then they blame it on the ref's..It's just stupid:( . But Porto and Benfica have lower class fans who really feel football, who enjoy football. Not to mention that Porto's team is amazing.
Sporting is the weakest of the three, no doubt about that, and now that they've changed the manager I really can't say if they're going to mount a serious title challenge or not. We'll have to wait and see. Moreover, they're going to sell , now at Christmas break or whatever, Edson, Beto, Rogério, Wender and I don't know who else and buy some new players in January, so I really don't know where they're heading. On the other hand, João Moutinho, Varela and Nani are three new fairly good Sporting youngsters. They just keep on coming!:realmad:
Benfica, will mount a serious title challenge, I'm sure of that. I think that our early stupid mistakes are over. And we already won 2-0 at Estádio do Dragão so Porto will still have to visit us, as well as Sporting.
It is still very early to say who is going to win the championship. Porto are no longer in European competitions so they have more advantage. Sporting I won't even comment. If Braga keep up the good work I think they can scare the big teams! So, I think it'll be between Benfica, Porto and Braga. We'll see  !(Obviously not with sunglasses..)
I don´t think Braga can win Superliga this year. They have an excellent goal-keeper and defence, a good midfield but they don´t have good forwards.Joao Tomas is a crappy player and Maxi only scores every now and then.
By the way: nice girls on your sig Sweey.

I don't know, I was just drawn to them back in the mid 90s. I knew they didn't have the resources of the big three but were trying hard to break their strangehold, and with time that Loureiro had his strong desire of doing it. They've never come across as a rude or arrogant club either, unlike Porto. Obviously when they/we managed to win the title in 2001 (matching Belenenses' record of one title, I believe) I was ecstatic, though it would've been nicer not to have lost the final match of the season 4-0 away to bloody Porto. Karagouni was been doing well ever since joining Benfica. But he is currently injured now.

Boavista played very well that year. And yes they matched Belenenses record. That loss against Porto was undoubtedly very embarrassing for Boavista. I remember it quite well. Ricardo was still your keeper.
Zagorakis7 - Karagounis hasn't really shown anything. He played against Sporting and then got injured. Then he played against Lille and got injured. So, he's not doing very well. Tomorrow against Vitória de Setúbal he's going to be on the first eleven, so we'll see.

Lucky bastard.
Today Benfica will be playing against Vitória de Setúbal. Karagounis will play as left midfielder, Nélson as a right defender (since Alcides was sent off on the last match) and Mantorras will probably be in the first eleven. Let's go Benfica!
I hate when teams like V.Setubal use the "autocarro" tactic.

Benfica got off to a bad start and clawing back, although can't see Porto losing to Guimaraes. Might still be second if Boavista do you some good.

Playing with Guimaraes in their home is always complicated. Also,Guimaraes is playing better with the new coach Vitor Pontes, managing to get a draw in Bessa with Boavista last week.
What a goal by Nuno Gomes! Karagounis played really well, although, according the newspaper A Bola Geovanni was the man of the match. He also played very well but it is a tough call.
I'm liking the way Benfica is playing! :D Watch out Liverpool..eheh

I think that Benfica didn´t start the game with the same pace as they did with Boavista and Manchester U.They only started to play well on the last 15 minutes of the game.

Not on the last 15 minutes but the whole 2nd half, as far as I'm concerned. The first half was very difficult for us because Setúbal was defending very well.
Doesn't that show how important we are??. Sold out already, were a big club. By the way am going to get the new champions league top next week and guess who am going to get on the back SIMAO. Haha were getting simao.
No you're not. Simão is ours. Our own...our precious!
You can´t take Benfica's best player so easily. I don´t think Vieira is going to let Simao go to Liverpool this winter.Maybe on the next summer.
I guess Vieira is your president?. And i was only jokeing mate but do hope we try and atleast get him because he is an excellent player and would do wonder's on the wing for Liverpool Football Club.
Yes, Vieira is Benfica's president.
Hahaha o well doesn't that show the ace player calibure in your team. How much do you guy's rekin we could get him for?. I know in the summer you wanted 12mill for him but their were reports of that pricetag crashing too 8.

Silva is indeed going to be released by Sporting. He's not playing much at Sporting.
As for Mantorras, I think that he's not fully recovered from his injury since he's only been playing 10-15 minutes per match.

Good to know that we're at least playing well. It's better than playing badly and losing. I just hope we can finish in the top five this season - which will be difficult considering Porto, Sporting, Benfica and Braga would generally be the top four.

Lol. Nice one.
According to the newspaper a Bola, Benfica has just bought Manduca from Marítimo. He's a versatile midfielder, since he can play on the left, middle and right and sometimes as a striker.
In my opinion, he's good for Marítimo, he's a good Superliga player but I don't know if he's good enough to play for Benfica. He will be useful, no doubt about that, but lots and lots of players who were touted as very good, once they arrive at Benfica they didn't handle the pressure and played shit. Just look at Carlitos from Estoril. He played for the under 21's Portuguese squad etc etc and when he came to Benfica he simply didn't handle the pressure. Anyway Manduca is 25, I think, so I guess he'll manage, he just has to play like he does at Marítimo.
Here he is:

The Benfica board is also looking for a goalkeeper, a midfielder (I don't understand why don't we call Diego Souza back from Flamengo....) and a striker. We'll have to wait and see.
According to the the same newspaper (a bola),Nuno Assis can leave Benfica this January and Braga are the main candidates to buy him  .

Maybe he'll stay, according to the same newspaper. Seeing that he's not that bad, the Benfica board is willing to give him a second chance.
I kinda like him. He's not that bad, but he's not to be in the first eleven. He's a good player to have on the bench.
According to today's newspaper a Bola, Manduca is confirmed and we bought José Fonte, a 21 year old central defender ,who can play as defensive midfielder, and is touted to have a great future. Honestly I've never heard of him, but hey he's portuguese and young, that's the most important. He's going to be loaned the rest of this season but he'll play for us the next one.
Here's he making a sliding tackle.

Well I know that José Castro from Académica is one of the best central defenders playing in Portugal. He's also 21 I think and he's class! I think that he was to go to England in the beginning of the season. He's very very good.
http://img369.imageshack.us/img369/1364/ze20castro8up.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
And here's Moretto, the goalkeeper we'll almost for sure buy. He's very good, at least when he played against Benfica. Damn it looked like he had wings! He would catch all the balls, but we managed to win anyway....

Scored is second goal of the night making the final score 3-2.
That should give our Red and White boys an extra boost to win todays fixture agaisnt Paços de Ferreira.
Moretto, Robert and Manduca are in the 18 squad list for today but they will probably start from the bench...and what a bench it will be: Moretto, Nélson, Manduca, Robert, Manuel Fernandes... whoa.

I think Wender has to be in the top 3 wingers in the league... I would say Simão > Quaresma > Wender.
It was a petty for Sporting that they didn´t make better use of him while he was there, they don´t even have a better substitute for him right now.
Silly mistake by young coach Paulo Bento.
I think that Wender didn't handle the pressure. Not anyone can play for Sporting, not that they're that great, but some players just don't manage to handle the pressure when they sign for one of the top three portuguese clubs.

Deivid is playing ok but he wasn´t convocated to play with Braga because he arrived one week later from his holidays.
Nuno Gomes is the best scorer, with 12 goals, followed by Meyong with 11.
Yes! We won. 2-0 against Paços de Ferreira. An owngoal (the ball was deflected by his leg..) by João Duarte (or José not sure...) after an excellent play on the left by Nélson, resembling Ricardo Quaresma. The second was scored by Geovanni, after a Simão's cross from the RIGHT. Unusual.
It was an average performance by Benfica, since we couldn't link the midfield with the attacking players because f*ck*ng p*ssy Beto was playing. He's horrible. The defenders were very good, especially Alcides!, playing as right defender. Nuno Gomes deserved to score a goal, but he couldn't make it. Robert played but I can't make a judgement so soon since he played only 15 minutes, although I didn't like him that much(let's give him time.). Manduca played even less but almost scored, twice. I won't even comment Miccoli and Geovanni was ok. Ricardo Rocha was a solid rock.

"little"? just so you lot know I am the reigning champion of PES4 (in the little championship me and my brother maintain) and yes I am behind in PES5, but hey it´s still early I have plenty of time untill PES6 arrives!
On to more serious subjects:
Benfica played well tonight despite what has been said. We didn´t link the midfield well with the attack because that´s just not the way we play! Normally Koeman makes the team play a high paced direct passing trough the WINGS (not the midfield) game. We make use of Nélson´s God given pace and Simão´s high dribling and speed to get the ball to the penalty area.
Beto made a good game defensivly speaking and a bad game offensively...but he tackles really well and he won a countless number of balls in the midfield battle. He has heart and commitement to the team and we need players like that. Yes I prefer Manuel Fernandes anyday but we have to rotate our players!
Nélson was man of the match for me, he just doesn´t stop surprising me! Tonight he played has left back and was incredible! He can play left or right back, and in both wings! I even read that in the youth squads he was a "number 10" kind of player! pure class.
About the new arrivals:
Moretto: only one real oportunity to test himself and he passed (great save in the final play of the match)
Robert: made the cross from where the second goal was born, altough the assist was by Simão
Manduca: nice passing in midfield, good technique but very few time to make a serious judgement.
Just to finish it´s the 4th game in a row with 50 000+ assistance in stadium of light!
Regardless of what you've said, we need a good player on the midfield. Manel Fernandes or anyone else but Beto have to play. Why did we loan Diego Souza? I p*ssy rest my case.

have you ever seen Diego Souza play? How can you say he is better then Beto? It´s amazing how easy people forget the past! Beto was determinant for our win agaisnt Man Utd, scoring one goal and winning the midfield battle alongside Petit. He is an important team member and it would be a stupid mistake to let him go.
Sometimes I think Benfica fans are just to self absorved with their own opinions and start to whistle and "booing" players just because they don´t like their style of play. This has proven to be very bad for our club in the past! A great example is Van Hooidjonk, "booed" out of Benfica by our own fans for a nickle and a half and went to Feyenoord where they welcomed his goalscoring qualities, winning the UEFA cup that same season!
Yes we need another midfielder. Yes Beto isn´t a magnificient player. But he has proven his utility to the team! Get off his case already!

You know that I don't "boo" Benfica players. And you also know that we need another midfielder. And you've seen Diego Souza. I don't care if he played very well against United. He's being payed so he did what he had to do. I don't care if he's useful. Benfica needs quality players, not useful players, if we want to win anything. Benfica has always been about winning every game! No matter what! Our team is there to win not to entertain, if you look at our history you´ll see lots of examples of players who gave it all for our Glorious red shirt (despite not having a lot of technique): Alvaro Magalhaes, Toni, Thern, Veloso...maybe not the kind of player who will win a match on his own...but the kind of player who wins championships!

Alcides: 21 year old brazilian central defender and right back. he is very tall but really pacey. chealsea had their eye on him for quite some time but an injury one year ago saw that interest fade away...he played for shalke 04 before joining Benfica. He has been playing some quality football for us, and his enjoying a well deserved run in the first team right now.
Geovanni: 25 year old brazilian, on a good day he is a match winner on is own either scoring or assisting. Has this strange ability to always perform at his best in big matches, one could say he even exceeds himself on big ocasions. Has a great long shoot. If he was more consistant he would be one of the best players in europe! Plays his best as a second striker or as a striker but in a partnership.
Ricardo Rocha: 27, local hero! a tremendous centre defender, he doesnt play often for our national squad because of ricardo carvalho and jorge andrade but he is class! can also play as left back, he gets forward whenever possible (even as centre back ehehehe) drives the team forward, the fans adore him! he is a great tackler and the best man marker in the league.
Manduca: 25, brazilian also, left winger but can also play as second striker. Still early to know if he is going to make it in a big team like Benfica, but in CS Maritimo he was good. Good technique, not very fast but with good dribling skills, hope he copes well with the pressure at Estadio da Luz.
Dorval will probably post some pictures of them later, hope it helped!

yes he did. He was one hell of a right winger! towards the end of his career played more like an attacking midfielder in the "number 10" role.
he started in FC Famalicão the club of his home city, a small town in the north of Portugal, he then proceed to become the manager of Famalicão after he retired...without much success though.
Don´t know who he is managing right now.
It very much did man! Thanks so much for that, now i know who these players are, they seem quality, good batch from Benfica. ;)

no problem mate ;)
There are rumours going on today that Benfica will sign Young Académica striker Marcel. He is tall and powerfull and doesn´t lack in technique either. I´m just a little bit worried about the price tag of 3,8 million euros...but he was Académica´s must expensive buy ever.
He currently has 9 goals scored and is an incridible asset for Académica.
Here he is battling for a ball with Benfica left back Dos Santos in last year´s Benfica 3 Académica 0 fixture

What happened? I never get the chance to watch Portuguese league highlights anymore although EuroSport show them.
Well, today is Taça de Portugal (portuguese cup) and Benfica is going to play with Tourizense(II division) in Tabua.I don´t think it´s going to be an easy game. Two years ago Benfica played against Gondomar in their stadium and lost 0-1 and last year they played against a lower division team(I think it was Marco)and missed 2 or 3 penalties and went through injury time to beat them.

Wasn´t it indirect free kick? I heard the match on the internet and they sayed Simão passed to Robert who shoot to the back of the net...
It wasn´t an easy match for Benfica. These small teams are getting tougher and tougher! all over europe, just look at Man Utd having to play a replay match agaisnt some amateurs...
It was Roberts first goal with the glorious Red and white shirt. Hope he continues to adapt well to our club.
Another one for our boy Nuno Gomes :)

You´re right.I saw on the net that Robert scored in a free kick and I just assumed it was direct.
Looks like we're going to buy Borgetti. He's 32! For God's sake! Why don't we buy Cavenaghi?(It's the other option.) Or Marcel from Académica..But Borgetti, just for one season..
Last night, while i was watching Lyon, news breaked out that Sporting Lisbon defender Beto is about to sign for Bordeaux. Id imagine this to be true, what can Bordeaux expect from Beto? But if you dont want to discuss him because this is a Benfica thread, i'd understand.
Well, it's ok to talk about Beto. :D Beto isn't that bad, maybe a bit too temperamental sometimes, with lots of out of time dangerous tackles. And strangely has a tendency to score own goals against the arch rivals..he has already scored two own goals against Benfica. In the same match! So, when Bordeaux plays against their arch rivals it's better to leave Beto on the bench!

He is a good defender, could be a very good defender if he was more humble. He thinks he is the portuguese beckembauer so he likes to join the attack and start the offensive manouver, and he just doesn´t have the technique to do it ALL the time...it leads to errors far to many often in my opinion.
Looks like borgetti is out of the equation now. Hopefuly its true I also think he is past his best now...
I don´t think we need anymore players but it seems Koeman desperatly wants another striker.
Hope it doesn´t unbalance the squad.
Good news on Simão today, noone seems to want to pay the 20 M euros that Benfica asks so he stays. I applaude this decision of our directors! It´s about time that foreign clubs stop comming here and take our best players for bargains, they have to pay what his right, and Simão his worth at least 20 M.

Two important news today, one positive and one negative:
On the negative side: Andersson and Miccolli got themselves in a fight during the trainning yesterday, after Luisão and Beto it´s the second event in one week! Looks like the huge amout of new signings (6) is starting to disrupt the harmony in the squad. To this I say: Act like the outrageus well payed professionals that you are and stop embarassing our club!
On the posivite side: In a surprising move Benfica has signed Kaz Patafta, the 17 year old Australian is tipped to be the next be thing comming from the country of kagaroos after Harry Kewel. Like his fellow country man he is also a left footed Attacking midifielder, but more of a number 10 kind of player. He has already one cap for the senior australian national team, wich for a boy of his age is remarcable.
Best of luck for you Kaz!

Woo this is just in...I know Dorval is going to love this one! I could´ve edited my last post but this piece of news deserves it´s own space:
Daúde Machude (nickname Rivaldo) 15 year old Mozambique U-17 international has signed for Benfica! He was trainning with Manchester United but Benfica managed to get him to our ranks. He played for Benfica of Mozambique and has already trainned with the senior Mozambique Squad!
Plays has a striker, left footed and acording to the senior national mozambique squad manager "has good dribbling and vision". He scored 3 goals in last years u-17 tournament (when he had just turned 15!) that was played in Portugal (with Sportings youth squad, Angola and some other team I can´t recall...).
Could he be the long awaited new Eusébio?? Remember Eusébio is also Mozambican.
Im very pleased with the work António Carraça (youth departement) has been making for Benfica. We have some very decent prospects for the future in or "b" squad, and we have deals with the most important clubs of Angola and Mozambique so that any time a new hot prospect appears he is sent to train in our facilities in Portugal.
Keep up the good Work Mr Carraça!
And to you Daude (Rivaldo) Machude I say best of luck! If you turn out to be half the player Eusébio was you will be one of the best in the world...

Tomorow is an important match agaisnt Académica, and Benfica will want to build from his prior 7 wins in a row, to start the second turn of the league winning. Académica has a very well organized team lead from the bench by one of the leagues most experienced managers (Nelo Vingada). They usually play 4x5x1 our 3x5x2 either way with a fighting packed midfield and a tough defence. And of course they have one of the best centre defenders in the league, young portuguese José Castro. He is class.

Fair enough. But I also heard that he was transfer-listed because of it...or has that all been blown out of proportion/sorted out?
No. He wasn't transfer listed because of that. He wasn't transfer listed at all. Some russian clubs were interested in him and seeing that he's not doing very well at Benfica, Koeman thought it would be a good opportunity to sell him. However, it never happened. This thing about the interview is sorted out already. He was banned from training for a few days but tomorrow he'll be training again.

I think Wender and Abel are loaned till the end of the season.
Benfica has won again! 7 wins in a row I think! 3-0 against Académica at Estádio da Luz. The first goal was scored by Simão from a penalty. The second was a brilliant header by Luisão after a nice Nuno Gomes cross. The last one was scored by Nuno Gomes after a nice play from Manduca with a fabulous cross to the second post!
Moretto played very well making 2 crucial saves in the first half. Ricardo Rocha and Luisão were solid rocks. Nélson had a nice performance with lots of dribbles upfront. Léo was alright. Petit was Petit. Beto was pussy Beto (I couldn't care less about commentating about this guy).:realmad:
Simão wasn't too flashy - regular performance. Nuno Gomes missed a goal scoring one on one with the keeper opportunity. Miccoli was ok, but nothing special. Robert has added nothing to our team. Nothing. N-o-t-h-i-n-g. Manduca (on for Robert) should be on the first eleven instead of him, he's really good. I don't know what's all this hype about Robert. Geovanni (on for Miccoli) was ok, very commited. Could have assisted Nuno Gomes to a certain goal, but he preferred to shoot. Oh, and Manel Fernandes (came onto Beto's place) was superb. No he wasn't. I'm overreacting. Manel Fernandes was alright, seeing that he was injured and is not yet match fit.
In the end it was a good performance by our players.

They did both beat you earlier in the season, although you weren't as good or consistent back then.

It´s true. Our Home record agaisnt Sporting is ridiculously unbalanced. I don´t recall the exact number but Sporting has never won more then 10 times in our home ground. While on the other hand the balance in Sporting´s ground is very close to 50%-50%.
The atmosphere at our stadium as always been special. Even when we had really poor teams, we still had a huge edge over our adversaries at Estadio da Luz.
Last year is a good example, we really had great support trough out the whole season and that decisive Benfica - Sporting (1 - 0 Luisão from a corner) with only one match left to play was the game of the year! All media pundits were saying that Sporting would never lose and they would win UEFA cup, Portuguese cup and league...ends up they didn´t win ANYthing and that match was won with great help from the constant support from the stands! (I remember crying for the remaining 10 minutes of the game...)
Gerrard and company better prepare for "o inferno da Luz"... translation: Stadium of Light´s Hell.
I like all of this positive attitude you Benfica fans have at the moment. As soon as that ball get's kicked off on the ground which is Anfield we shall show you how good we are and how we won the cup you are trying to win. Do not underestimate us like Juventus, Chelski and A.C. did. Peter Crouch will destroy your defense they wont know what to do with the man. And stevie will just show why he is one of the best centrel midfielders in the world. O yes just to add we shall purchase Simao in the summer.

Peter Crouch? Peter "horse face" Crouch? Not with 2 peter crouches you would beat Luisão in the air!
Steven Gerrard? Yeah he is great no doubt, but he will encounter Petit "the pitbull". After the first tackle he has 2 options: wheter asks Benitez to be replaced or faces his destiny on the field...when he looks Petit in his eyes again all is courage will disapear.
Anfield used to be a very dificult ground...in the 80´s it was probably the most dificult ground to play in, the atmosphere created by the Kop was unbelivable...after the stadium was remodeled and all the seats have chairs, and the ticket prices are very expensive it just became a sad shadow of what it used to be...
Anfield scares noone, and Liverpool´s team has the spirit of a crazy spanish cow.
Seeing that we'll beat Liverpool, I don't see why Simão would want to change to such a low-standard club as Liverpool. An historical English club with just one or two Brittish players...It's kind of embarrassing. I bet that with Benitez you're living la vida loca, hey? Full of foreigners who couldn't care less about the club. Just because of that you don't deserve to win, and probably because of that you will lose. Face it man.
I bet Bill Shankly turns on his grave whenever Benitez's Liverpool is playing.
First of all we shall see with Crouch and this player you call Luisão??who.
Second of all Stevie G wont have to encounter this ''pitbull'' as you call him because he will be too busy being on the end of Momo Sissoko knee crunching tackles. The guy would take on your whole squad if he was aloud to and he's only 20.
And Anfield a shadow of it's self you must be joking because you was there at the Olympiakos, Juve and the Chelski games, especially at the chelsea game lot's of people said that it was the best atmosphere at Anfield for a very long time. Me and everyother person standing in the Kop got shivers while singing You'll never walk alone. Your talking utter rubbish my friend. Also the ticket prices are expensive ??, what when they have been the same for years mate. There most proberly alot more expensive than your teams prices because they knwo there going to get a near full stadium for everygame, unlike the stadiums in your league half empty.

Anyway time will only tell and i wish Benfica all the best in their league and cup comp's that they are competing in. I'll clap you back off to Portugal when we kick your ass at Anfield though :D. Sorry didn't mean it. I can't help it. Peter Crouch!!!!!!!!. Sorry.
Anyway, we won against Gil Vicente (3-1) at Estádio Cidade de Barcelos. I can say that we started the game losing since at the 8th or 9th minute Carlitos dived and we suffered a goal from a penalty. But at the 18th minute, I think, Simão scored also from a penalty. Then Geovanni scored a spectacular goal after a cross by Nuno Gomes. And the third one was an own-goal, quite stupid by the way.
Our defense was ace during the whole match. Alcides plays really well on the right as well as on the centre. What a defender! Nélson is mythical! Luisão and Anderson are kings on the back. Petit and Manel we're very good also. Manel is still lacking match fitness, however he's still Manel. Geovanni scored one goal, nothing more to add. Simão was ok. Manduca should be, in my opinion, always in the first 11. He's really really good! Nuno Gomes missed 3 in front of the goalie chances to score! But we're used to it. Robert, Karagounis and Marco Ferreira also played.
Porto won 1-0 against Naval , at Estádio do Dragão and Sporting drawed 1-1 with Marítimo at Estádio de Alvalade.
Next target, Liverpool! :D
