Use photoshop, make a new document, set the size to 100 x 100 pixels. Make the avatar then select save for web...

Just save it as a different style. Jpeg is quite big but bitmap is poor quality but smaller Kbs. Or just change the colour scheme.

Cheers - Ok here are two things - how do you put smileys in yout post and secondly, how do you put a link but in a post but instead of the address you put something like "Click Here"

First to get a smiley go to User CP and then go onto options. A fair way down it says message interface and you have to change it to Standard rather than basic. For the second one I am unsure but think when you change from basic to standard you have more options available just like the smileys.
