Had me Ipod just over a year, and suprise suprise, its packed in on is.
So now Im looking for an alternative. I had about 8gb on me Ipod, so I'll be looking for something with a capacity of around 20gb. I've heard good things about Irivers and Creative Zen's, but I dont really know much about them... Can anyone help?
Cheers
I love my Zen Touch, had it over a year and, thankfully, its worked fine all along. iRiver are meant to be good but may possibly be expensive. Sony MP3 players are also highly rated.
Mate i looked around for you and Currys and Dixons don't have the i rivers on their websites????? Argos are selling it for £180 i think it was. I'll check out ebay for you now. But i have heard off alot of people that the i river is very good, i may get one my self. Theres also them Sony ones they look decent. Those Sony ones are selling for £140 £130 6gb i think it was any good to ya if so just check them out on Currys and the Dixons website.
Well i've got a Zen Touch, and would recommend it, sound quality and battery life is excellent. It may not be as trendy or attractive as the iPod, but it doesn't break, or scratch, as easily either, mine's been dropped plenty of times, not from a great height, but it still works fine.
There's a new Creative Zen out now though, the Zen Sleek (http://www.trustedreviews.com/article.aspx?art=1991), I can't vouch for it's quality but I imagine it will have similar qualities to the Zen Touch.
Of course I can't speak for the iPod, but there are enough members on here who own one.
I had a look on ebay and theres jack there but i looked on ebuyer and theres this the i river silver one or somethin 6gb check it out, you have to scroll down the page a bit to read the info on it aslo check out the rest of the site.

Forgot to mention, careful as I am, I did once drop my Zen Touch and, as Gary G said, not a scratch or any sort of performance defect. The new Creative earphones I bought (lightweight but cheaper than Sony's Fontopia) work superbly well with it too.
Reading all of this thread might help too (particularly the latter pages):

That Zen Sleek looks absolute quality. Cheers for pointing that one out. If I had any money, I'd be buying one right now. I like the Zen's, my mate has had one for ages and it is still going solid. None of this iPod lasting for one year shite.
i have a I-river, great player, easy to use and some great fetures,(pictures/video).
why dont you try THIS (http://www.advancedmp3players.co.uk/shop/guide.php) its a questionnair that helps pick the prefect mp3 player for you.
No MP3 players match my criteria
i didnt say it was perfect
The headphone jak on my Jukebox Zen buggered, and would cost like £100 to get fixed and sent back to me. I bought a Song NWHD3 I think it is. It's an older model, but is very good. Also you can get it in PINK!

I've got a 15gb vintage iPod, one of the older ones - and it's great, but if it's battery life you're going for then get a Zen Touch, as they have by far the longest lasting battery power of any MP3 player/jukebox I've known. My friend has one, and they're fantastic!

I've had an iPod for about a year and a half now. Actually the first one's battery died, and I got a new one, even though the warranty had ended. Nice service from Apple. For me it's the perfect mp3 player, easy to use and looks great. The battery life is the only downside.

I still have a NOMAD Jukebox Creative Zen Xtra, which I bought almost 2 years ago, and it's been great. The battery hasn't even died out yet, and I use it regularly. Creative Zen's sound quality is untouchable.

Don't go anywhere near any Philips.
I'm considering this (http://www.play.com/play247.asp?page=title&r=ELEC&title=867365&p=321&g=409&pa=sr) for my birthday in May. I want atleast 20gb, don't want an iPod because I loathe iTunes and a compact size would be good too.
I expect I'll go for a Creative model, possibly that one above or the Sleek which Gary posted earlier.
What's wrong with iTunes? :D
Bravoboy
04-03-2006, 16:38
Indeed. I didn't want an iPod at first, as I had GBs of music stored in WMP, and I didn't like the look of iTunes, but now I've got it all set up - I love it! Very simple to use, and takes a lot less time to load.

I got an 20gb ipod photo/colour u2 edition. I only have it cause i found it :) After that I chucked in my mini. There aint no point me buying another music player since i cannot fill that space already. I think apples product are slightly overarted. I like the ipod but it dosent have any features (except design) that justify its 80% market share. However I aint really fond of creative/sony current offerings, they are a bit bigger and I dont find them attractive.

What's wrong with iTunes? :D
I hate iTunes cause of the dreadfull DRM, cause of this I cant put it any of the few legal tracks I purchased from them on my psp. I used to use a program called jhym that got rid of the protection, but they can't crack the latest protection on itunes 6.
So i found this russian site http://mp3spy.ru/en/ The prices are AMZING you can buy albums for $1. Non of that DRM. This is the only thing that keeps me purchasing some music legally.
I love iTunes it's great, nice interface and easy to use. I have filled all my space on my Nano and I am saving up to buy an iPod Video in the summer.
How many times do you want to post the same message?

Just delete them then.
I've deleted them. Sorry about the confusion. That Creative Vision looks good but it is more expensive than the iPod Video and that to me looks better.
But their specifications don't match, surely?
My mp3player recently...euh..imploded( ), so Ill be needing a new one, hearing some good things about the Zen Touch from people here, I see.
nah its all about the sony hd5

may find it harder to find now the new sony mp3 is out but this is still the nuts. plenty of room to store songs, battery life is awesome (pisses all over the ipod) had it for a good long while now and you can fall asleep with it on and still get another week out of it.
its also super reliable, hasn't ever frozen or anything and is extremely hard wearing compared to other mp3 players. i've dropped it a fair few times and its in perfect condition still

I've got the Sony HD5, the unit is brilliant, I can't fault it and the battery life is unbelievable.
The software ruins it somewhat though.
But I need to shop around soon for a bigger mp3 player, I'm upto 17GB/20GB at the moment. Ideally I'd look for a Sony unit with iPod software and Creative's sound quality, but alas, it doesn't exist.

I've have (had) a Creative Zen Micro but the headphone input broke so i had to take it in for repair, that happened after 6 months and i took it in on X-Mas eve and i still havent got it back yet even when they said it would take 4-6 weeks!
But the Zen was great.
My ipod 60 gig photo was replaced by PC World (yes, you heard me right!!!) after 3 months because the play button didnt work and the lock switch didnt either. Since i got my new one, about 8 months ago, it has been perfect.

I've got the same problem as you.
I've currently got 2.5gb left, and will be looking for a new player soon. The Zen Sleek looks like an excellent peice of kit, but the capacity is only 20gb, and ideally I want to get a 40gb player.

i've never been a fan of any of the Zen players though, even though technically they are good kit. theres just something in the way they look that puts me off all the time! i think i'm just an old skool sony lover!
Archos Gmini XS202s. 20GB, £130(ish). It really is good too, it might not have the colour screen or any other gimmicks, but it does it's job damn well.

I've had a Creative Zen XTRA Jukebox the past 2 years, and i've been delighted with it, but I now want to buy a new mp3 player. Having done a little research, the Creative Zen Vision looks the most attractive option. I'm aware there's only a 30GB model available currently, but does anyone know if there are any plans for Creative Labs to bring out a 40 or 60GB model? With the thousands of songs and videos i'd like to transfer, I think i'll need more than 30GB.
My one holds 80 songs.I have'nt even got 25 on there yet .Anyway, I had itunes and i put the songs from there onto my MP3 player and that worked fine, until itunes messed up.I then deleted itunes and kept with Windows Media Player.Problem is when i put it in the computer and get songs from WMP to my MP3 player, the itunes ones dont play.I'm really annoyed about that as i can now only listen to about 13 songs :realmad:, any help?
I'm still on my Sony NW-HD3 and loving it.

Judging from the fact that only the 30GB model is available in the US at present, I doubt we'll get any other sorts in Europe any time soon if at all.

Same here. Only troulbe is mine's a bit scratched, but that's because I'm a clumsy fucker. Mine's black, white looks shit-hot though. Got it for about £220 from a local PC modding shop, you can order it online from them though.

I've had a Zen Micro and Philips Go Gear (I think that's the name). Zen broke down after 3 weeks, and apparently, that the norm. The Philips software was shit (unless you buy the upgrade for about £20), and the menu was pretty poor. The sound quality was pretty good though, unlike the Zen. However, I hear Creative are supposed to be very good now. My mate's got a 20gb Creative Zen, and he says it very good, so if I ever decide to get another MP3 player, I might go for that, since they're a lot cheaper than iPods.

I've already transferred Kolo Toure, Cesc Fabregas and Joaquin Sanchez compilations onto it, along with a Jennifer Walcott, Briana Banks, Crissy Moran and Victoria Silvstedt video, but that'll do for now, as i'm mainly concentrating on transferring music at the moment. The visuals are great ;)

Well, it's that time again, yet another MP3 player has died on me, farewell Zen Sleek Photo :( . It wasn't connecting to my PC anymore, and general performance was very sluggish to say the least.
So, popped along to Currys to see what they say, they informed me that I could pick a replacement, I fancied a different player so had a look. Noticed the Zen Vision:M and remembered seeing some canny reviews for it, so picked that. Only cost £189.99 aswell, £30 off, which is good considering my Zen Sleek was £219.99.

Got the Zen yesterday and updated it all finally. Jeeez, updating it is a bitch man - the software is a bit shitty, would be a lot better layed out like iTunes or if you could update the MP3 via iTunes as with this you have to scroll through thousands of songs in no order if you need to find a certain track. I just highlighted all of my songs through the iTunes libary and pasted them which worked fine, but then to make a playlist takes ages to find each song, so I copied my iTune's playlists now I have two of each song. :realmad:
Beautiful piece of equipment though, loving the fact you can record radio aswell. Great buy really, I've whacked a few South Park's and Peep Show's on there too. Thank you guys.
Don't buy a Zen. I have two friends with them. They look shite, thicker than a breeze block, the buttons just don't work at all and the interface is poor. I have had my 30 gig iPod Video for just over a year and it has never gone wrong. Suprisingly, the battery life hasn't decreased either.

Over a year on and aye, agree with pretty much all that. Surprised at how durable it's been anarl, seeings as I normally roll in mortal, think, wahey, I'll stick some tunes on, then fall asleep and wake up with it hanging from me ears.
Suprisingly, the battery life hasn't decreased either.
Damn straight surprisingly, they are overpriced pieces of fashion accessories

I get that sometimes, watching a movie before I go to sleep (ritually, I used to HAVE to read before sleeping until I got the Zen) then the next day it I'd turn over and find I've been lying on top of it.

Are you talking about the Creative Zen XTRA? That does look poor (but it is outdated, to be fair) but the Zen Vision is an attractive mp3 player. I've had it for around 10 months now, using it most days, and have never had any problems with it. I've had the Zen XTRA for 3 years with no problems either, despite dropping it from height a few times.

Agreed. Of course taste is a major factor but I don't see how it's a brick. Interface is roughly the same as the Ipod.

The problem I had with them is the screens. They are just too weak and easily dent/scratch. Also the battery seem's to get shorter and shorter as you go on.

Just bought a 30GB iPod today and was wondering how you add videos to it? When i go to Add To Library on iTunes and double click on the video i want to add, nothing happens....it doesn't apear in the iTunes library. Anyone got any ideas?
Click and drag? Make sure you've set iTunes to manage videos manually in the ipod settings.

I haven't got a Zen Micro, but if there's a 'Synchronise Media' or 'Import' feature, you should be able to freely transfer files from your Zen to your computer.
Hmm...just got a new white Zune off of ebay for $185 (retails for $240 over here). Anyone had any experiences with it?
My iRiver has started to crash so I decided that I will invest in a new mp3. I am looking for somethingthat is relativly small in size but can play videos. I'd like 20gb minimum storage and also not to be an ipod as I have issues with the money stealing cunts.

Creative Zen! Quality piece of equipment.
I don't know what was wrong with it, I left it for a day or 2 and it's working again so all is good. Thanks for the tips anyway, lads.
I'm just a little annoyed about the software as I've re-named all the songs/artists etc. with iTunes but I have to upload the songs onto the Zen they go from the file name which would usually set it as track 1 etc.
So basically, is there any way of using iTunes (or similar) to upload the songs onto the Zen?

Use the Creative MediaSource it's as good as iTunes, however the latter is crap so it's not saying a lot. WMP is pretty good to be honest.

I've got an i-pod video 30gig, had it 'bout a year now I suppose and had no problems so far..and its easy to use on the computer...I had a sony mp3 before but it wouldn't record any cd's that were even slighty scratched. I mainly just use mine for music but lately a load of podcasts, there are some good free ones on itunes
Thinking of purchasing a Zen Vision as I've heard a few good things about them. Either that, or can anyone else recommend anything else than the said player? :/

Erm.. most MP3 players can unless your car doesn't have a cassette player.

The Sennheiser CX300 are excellent, if you can get used to the in-ear phones concept. It cancels out a lot of sound, but at first you don't really notice the difference as they are uncomfortable but after you get used to them they work like a charm.

That's one of the main reasons I'm going for in-ear phones this time. You can't have a decent musical experience with standard earphones due to their lack of isolation.

For the non hardcore music fan I recommend the iPod Touch. The posers choice!
Yeah, I would class myself as a hardcore music fan tbh, as even constantly downloading music, I could still find many albums I would want to listen to. Also the fact I haven't been on this earth for too long, in music terms anyway, means I have quite a lot of catching up to do on older artists and working my way through different genres deciding on what I like.
My iTunes library currently sits at about 25gb and is still growing, plus I have a beatles discography I haven't added to it, with a 16gb Ipod Touch I really don't have a problem though. Smart playlists allow me to manage my music well in iTunes and to keep varying my music so that I can stick about 10gb of music on at a time, leaving space for video, but still having plenty to listen to. A quick resync using different smart playlists is all it takes to change around my ipod library. Imo, smart playlists are one of the best parts of itunes and hopefully that keep getting improved with new feature in the future.
That and the fact my ipod touch looks sexy, ofcourse

the only stumbling blocks I can think of is that its very expensive (althogh I just missed out on one on eBay for a decent £175 inc. p+p) and that there might be a larger capacity next gen ipod touch coming out in the next few months

I got it for £170. I was at Heathrow airport and wanted the 60gb. And that was £170, but when I opened up the box it was the 120gb version. So I was delighted, becuase the 120gb retail for around £320 online.
