After Werder Bremen's shock defeat and also dropping points to Bayer Leverkusen last week means Schalke overtake them for the Champions League qualifier. After Hamburg's 2-1 win over Bayern Munich, and overtaken Werder Bremen for second spot, Bayern for the second week running fail to win and now the lead has been narrowed down to 6 points.
Koln remain bottom of the Bundesliga but not all is lost as there only 6 points behind Mainz and Kaiserslautern, the relegation battle is on with Mainz just out of the relegation zone on goal difference.

Very very good Daz, nice job on this one. I also like the format. Well, not the keenest on German football, but definitely have a great style and are mighty strong when it comes to Europe. The only real team I like is Bremen. Mainly because of Charisteas that I've tuned into German football, but even with his departure, I watch it sometimes. I just love Miroslav Klose and his stuff he produces. Klose and Klasnic are such a joy to watch, best partnership in the Bundesliga for sure. Really good. But pretty shit to see them lose last time out. But they should win against Nuremberg, I would LOVE to see them more in the Champions League, even next seaon and the ones after. Ahead of Schalke please! And also particularly on what they've managed to with Juve, good spirit, If Juve were playing away next leg, I bet they'd lose.
Anyway Daz, who is your favourite German club? Or do you support any?

Well, I've always had a soft spot for Borussia Dortmund, maybe it's because a big club falling down the league, but this season I have kind of warmed towards Hamburg, they qualified to the Uefa Cup through the Intertoto Cup, that's the difference between this season and last season, also I would like to see them (or Werder Bremen but Hamburg are closer) to catch Bayern, that's the only negative part as they usually dominate the Bundesliga with the odd team winning now and again, and the last time Hamburg won it was 1982/1983. since then Bayern have won 12 leagues, the other 9 go to Werder Bremen (3), VfB Stuttgart (2), Kaiserslautern (2), and Borussia Dortmund (2). Would like it to see another team win it, sometimes the race will be close but Bayern are too superior to the other clubs.
So to answer your question, I will be cheering on Hamburg. :)

That's the spirit. You know your German football for sure, and absolutely spot-on regarding the way Bayern dominates the league. Dortmund were once a great team, money problems that's all. Could have been in Europe competition consecutively by now. Who do you think will win it this year? I hope Bremen take it, but ofcourse that would mean that Bayern will have to lose some games, Hamburg doing a double over them is something magic. Wonder why they've been so good? Except the inclusion of VdV ofcourse, any other clue? Is Benjamin Lauth playing well for them anyway?

Well, Bayern have been dropping points but they don't drop points often, although this would mean Hamburg, and Werder Bremen would need to be careful not to drop points, Werder Bremen losing 3-0 to Hertha is a big blow.
Obviously, Rafael van der Vaart has been a great exception to the team, and now having Nigel de Jong fro Ajax aswell but I can't say I would know, me being stuck with only freeview finds it hard to watch football, and at midnight they only repeat French, Portuguese, Dutch and Argentine/South American football, but I try as hard to watch the highlights. The bonus they have is with big players like Sergeij Barbarez, doesn't score enough though, and Nigel de Jong scoring against Bayern aswell, as far as Werder Bremen, they need to work on getting that Champions League spot before thinking beating Bayern. ;) Heart breaking for them in mid week but they need to fight to be there next season.

Yeah, and just image if they did knock out Juve, great accomplishment. Heart break.
Oh yeah, Barbarez, the Bosnian guy, despite his age, he still plays well and scores. Yes, de Jong, how can I forget??
I think Bremen stand a realistic chance though, they are not far off too. But certainly will need help from the enemies themself by dropping points. If Bayerns wins the league again, it will be the ____ time?

Hamburg are also my prefered German team. You will be surprised at how many Rangers fans support Hamburg and vice versa. I've seen a few of their games this season and i have to say with the new additions they have really impressed me, Van Der Vaart my favourite player. Hopefully they can catch Bayern and cause an upset, it's about time they lost the throne in the German league.
It is clearly going to Bayern
I don't like them, but I can't see them screwing up enough under Magath once they've gained a lead.

I still can’t believe Werder lost 3-0 to Hertha. :S
As Sweey said, I’d look no further than Bayern for the title.
Good work Daz, I had an idea of starting this but that would mean quite a lot of work for me which I already have. Well, work isnt the right word, I enjoy it.
Im leaning towards Hamburger SV, mainly because of VD Vaart, De Jong and Boulahrouz.
Ah, VD Vaart. Once hailed the new Cruyff, he actually came close to the man with his form at Ajax a couple of years ago. De Jong isnt playing well, he I think he still needs to adjust. So far he hasnt been very good for the SV, labelled worst buy of the season. Although he made up a bit with that Bayern winner.

Hamburg vs Rapid Bucharest
(agg: 0-2)
16/03/06
Schalke 04 vs Palermo
(agg: 0-1)
Both teams have it all to do in the second leg after losing to their opponents. Hamburg losing the first goal 2 minutes into the first half injury time by Daniel Niculae. On 67 minutes, Nigel de Jong recieved a second yellow card and was sent off and will not feature in the second leg. Just 2 minutes remaining, Mugurel Buga converts from a Daniel Niculae cross to give the Romanian side a 2-0 lead going into the return leg in Hamburg. Not much time on the clock but still time for Vasile Maftei to recieve another yellow card and will miss the return leg for Rapid Bucharest.
Schalke didn't have much luck either away from home, just 15 minutes into the game, Franco Brienza put the home side up assisted by Paul Codrea. 1-0 it remained and looking comfortable for the return leg in Gelsenkirchen. Both teams have it all to play for and going into there matches on a high, a comeback for either Hamburg or Schalke could be possible.

Halftime between Hamburg and Rapid and it's very much game on now, Benjamin Lauth on 24' and Sergej Barbarez on 36'.
Its going to be a very interesting second half...
Eric Clyde
15-03-2006, 19:52
I think we're into injury time now, it's now 3-1 to Hamburg which means they need to get another goal because of the away goals. Rafael van der Vaart scored on 62' while Mugurel Buga scored for Rapid on 51'.
EDIT: Hamburg are out of Europe, they fought back and got the 2 goals they needed to take to extra time but Rapid responded after haftime which meant they need another 2 goals, unfortunatley they could only managed one and missed a spot in the quarter finals. I am led to believe there was alot of time wasting, either that or Uefa's website got it wrong as it said injury time was "90+8".
Could've been a bad injury to someone ;)
Glad Rapid are through, hope Steaua can join them tomorrow and that Schalke crash to Palermo. I'm backing Zenit St Petersburg all the way after Palermo, Roma and Udinese (because they're Italian).
Just out of Germany curiousity , by chance does anyone know the most probable squad going to participate in the World Cup for Germany?
Oh, and how is Nowotny and Mertesacker doing at the moment for their respective clubs? Also, how do people rate Owomoyela and Manuel Friedrich?

1 Italian club has crashed out. . I think the Bucharest clubs have been a suprise in this years Uefa Cup, Dinamo Bucharest controversially missed out as they needed to beat Marseille to beat CSKA Moscow, scored a goal right when the whistle when therefore not allowed, they must have been gutted. Same as Hamburg, they got off to a great start but the second half was different, and they just couldn't get that goal and sad to see them go out. Schalke and Steaua are the ones I want to win the Uefa Cup now, and one of them are probably put a bet on them.
Great result for Schalke (the strongest team in the competition in my view). They thumped ten-man Palermo leaving all the Italian clubs in tatters :crymore:
I'm a Zenit man for the rest of the tournament, and interesting to note that Zenit, the two Bucharest clubs Steaua and Dinamo and Levski Sofia are all in the quarter-finals. It is nicer when these sorts of clubs get this far and hopefully they'll all avoid one another and Zenit can go all the way and make me proud.

Zenit eh? Well good stuff, atleast you were aginast Marseille. ;). Isn't that the club where Kerzakhov and the talented Andrei Arshavin (?) plays at, I'm sure I saw them during the highlights, unless there is another Kerzakhov. (I also think he should move to a bigger club, he is pretty good and caused Marseille lots of confusion amongst their defence)

Zenit have been a suprise, and Russian clubs not often get to European finals, Dinamo Moscow was the first losing to Rangers in 1972 and of course last season, CSKA first Russian team to win it, although I think Dynamo Kiev and Dinamo Tbilisi won a European trophy under the Soviet Union (can't say for certain). Anyway, I'm cheering on Schalke, Steaua and Basel. Schalke as I really like them, I was gutted they couldn't get past AC, although they came close to a shock. Steaua for some reason I like them but good result away from home against Real Betis, dunno why but would like to see them go to the final or Basel, liked Basel ever since there 2002/2003 (When they put out Celtic) and there domination the Superleague while putting out Monaco who aren't having the best of seasons.

Thanks for the line-up James. I would of thought Owomoyela would be included instead of Christian Worns, who has been in very bad terms with Klinsmann. :crymore:. Asamoah to be added is good, but he doesn't seem to come up big when they need him. Miroslav Hanke . Apart from that, it's just about the same squad I was expecting.
The rage between Klinsmann and Worns.
http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/060224/7/6573.html
I doubt Worns will be called up, they were supposed to meet and sort it out but Worns cancelled the meeting. Not the way to get the crowd behind you, certainly not when you are playing in Dortmund against the USA for t ;)
Im curious of who will be the 1st goalkeeper on the WC, now they have this rotation system, but surely they wont continue thaton the stage itself?

I hope Worns patches things up with Klinsmann, I much prefer him to Owomoyela.
Oliver Kahn will be the #1, although it should be Lehmann.

Third week in a row Bremen have dropped points and falling further behind Hamburg after there narrow win over relegation battlers Wolfsburg and have closed the gap on Bayern to put the pressure on them for there crunching tie against Schalke tomorrow. Hannover have climed 3 places up to 6th after they beat league strugglers Koln 1-0. They are now 2 points behind Stuttgart after they were held to a 1-1 draw with Monchengladbach at Borussia-Park. Other teams that have moved up the Bundesliga are Dortmund, moving from 10th to 7th, Eintracht moving up one place to 13th. Hertha, Leverkusen, Monchengladbach and Wolfsburg have all moved down the table. The bottom 3 clubs have remained in the same.
Fuck, Bremen keep on dropping points. Who was Bremen's keeper on that game? Wiese again?
Nice to see Amanatidis getting that hat-trick for Eintracht.

Bayern's victory over Schalke puts them 6 points ahead of Hamburg and Schalke remain 3rd, only 1 point ahead of Bremen, Hertha's 1-0 win over Arminia have put them up to 6th in the Bundesliga. Arminia drop a place to 12 swapping with Nurnberg.
Werder beat Bayern 3-0, goals by Schweinsteiger(og),Jensen, and Borowski.
Borussia Dortmund 1-2 Bayer Leverkusen
Duisburg 1-1 Schalke 04
Hamburg 2-0 Borussia Mönchengladbach
Arminia Bielefeld 1-0 Eintracht Frankfurt
FC Cologne 3-0 Wolfsburg
FSV Mainz 05 0-0 Hannover 96
Stuttgart 1-0 Nuremberg(goal by Tomasson, that has been a while)
Its getting thight, only 4 points seperate Hamburg and Munchen(Munich, if you must). Van Der Vaart scores again, this time a penalty. Vd Vaart for president!
Isn't it three points between Bayern and Hamburg Barry?
EDIT: Nope its four
Hopefully Hamburg can snatch the title away from Bayern (whom I don't like) although I can't really see it happening. Felix Magath would have Bayern set up well enough not to collapse in silly fashion.
So Bayern is champions, and won the DFB Pokal.
Other news is that Lukas Podolski wants to go to Bayern, both clubs are now trying to get to an agreement.
Has Podolski actually done much this season? Yes, Cologne were awful...but wasn't he sub-standard too? He barely scored all season and I'm unaware of him carrying any injuries.
New season and obviously Bayern are everyone favourites to win the Bundesliga, but there are teams like Bremen and Hamburg that will be challanging Bayern for title.
Bayern
With Ballack gone, there is a big viod to fill at Bayern as they have failed to replace Ballack so a lot will be expected of bastian schweinsteiger and they also missed out on Van nistelrooy, but they have bought Podolski and Van buyten.
Weder Bremen
Bremen were last seasons top goal scorers with Klose, Klasnic and Valdez reaching double figures. A few players have left the club such as Valdez due to no 1st team opportunities and Johan Micoud who moved to Bordeaux. Bremen have made a few signings with the arrival of Diego from Porto and the talented defender Per Mertesacker. Bremen should be Bayern's closest challengers and I can see them winning the title this year.
Hamburg
Hamburg have a Very talented sqaud and with the arrival of the highly rated defender Vincent kompany and Paulo Guerrero then maybe they can be more of a threat than last season. If Hamburg get it right this season and dont drop vital points then maybe they can cause an upset.
Dortmund
Dortmund have a young squad and hopefully Sahin can help Dortmund have a great season, he has performed very well for Dortmund despite his tender age. They have an all new strike partnership in Nelson Valdez and Alexander Frei and potentially could be the strike partnership in the Bundesliga. The fans will be depending on those two to shoot Dortmund up the table.
Schalke 04
Last season was a disapointing campaign and will be hoping for a lot better. They have bought Peter Lovenkrands and Halil Altintop to strengthen their squad.
My prediction:
1st Weder Bremen
2nd Bayern
3rd Hamburg
4th Dortmund
5th Schalke 04
German League Cup Final
Weder Bremen 2-0 Bayern
Both goals coming from Klasnic
Fixture 1:
Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 Alemannia Aachen
Borussia Monchengladbach 2-0 Energie Cottbus
Hamburg 1-1 Arminia Bielefeld
Mainz 2-1 VFL Bochum
Schalke 04 1-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
Stuttgart 0-3 Nurnberg
Bayern 2-0 Dortmund
Hannover 2-4 Werder Bremen
Wolfsburg 0-0 Hertha Berlin
Good start for Championship contenders Bayern and Bremen but Hamburg drop points at home which was there main problem last season, Schalke were held to a draw at home while the team of the week had to go to Nurnberg as they thrashed Stuttgart.
You didn't mention the best performance - Nuremberg's 3-0 win at hapless Stuttgart ;)
You didn't mention the best performance - Nuremberg's 3-0 win at hapless Stuttgart ;)
I know but I was busy at the time I thought I might aswell talk about the main teams I will do it later
btw Bremen's match was actually more entertaining came back from 2-1 down to win 4-2. Scored 3 goals in the last 11 minutes
I really like that new striker of Hamburg. Hamburg was in attack all 90 minutes, Bielefeld played it smart though.

Bayern, Bremen and FC Nurnberg keep their 100% record, Hamburg are already off the pace after dropping points again. Hertha Berlin thrashed Hannover, Schalke sneaked a 1-0 at Alemannia Aachen and a disapionting draw at home for Borussia Dortmund
Stuttgart did ridiculously well after crashing incredibly last week. Had two men sent off in the last half hour, scoring once with ten men and once with nine.
Result
Schalke 2-0 Bremen
A well deserved victory for Schalke, should have been 4 or 5 nil to Schalke
Results
M'gladbach 1 -0 Arminia
Bochum 0 - 1 FC Energie
Hannover 0 -3 Aachen
FC Bayern 0 - 0 Nürnberg
Bayer 04 1 - 1 Wolfsburg
Stuttgart 1 -3 Dortmund
Mainz 05 1 - 1 Frankfurt
HSV 1 -1 Hertha BSC
Hamburg dropped points at home once again but luckily for them so did Bayern and Nurnberg. Dortmund finally win their first game with a stunning display at struggling Stuttgart
Stuttgart are quite simply fucked. Even at this early stage of the season, their home performances have both been atrocious and after last season when Trapattoni was fired for drawing too many games only for them to go sliding further down the table, you have to wonder what they'll manage this season.

Hamburg have signed Juan Pablo Sorin from Villarreal. I don't know how many times I have said but Hamburg are putting a good team together.

Hamburg are putting a good team together, and I love the cockiness from the few Arsenal fans, I have a feeling Hamburg could cause, or cause major upsets.
Hamburg have definatly become stronger with Mathijsen and Sorin, they can trouble Arsenal but I wont be suprised if they beat Hamburg away. Hamburg drop too many points at home
Bayern Munich 2-1 Alemannia Aachen
Hamburg 1-1 Werder
Hannover 1-1 Bayer Leverkusen
Mainz 1-1 Hertha Berlin
Schalke 2-0 Wolfsburg
Stuttgart 1-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
Bayer Leverkusen 3-1 Schalke
Hertha Berlin 2-2 Stuttgart
Top 12 all Seperated by two points
Bayern must be pleased - lost twice and they're still level on points with the other leaders.
VFB Stuttgary vs Bayer Leverkusen has to be the most entertaining game I've seen in months in any competition.
Bremen vs Dortmund are playing for any one who wants to know. :D
