An album I can't stop playing right now is Boss Hogg Outlawz's "Serve & Collect", it really is damn great. There's genuinely so many Texas classics on there that it's like defining of the south's music and culture. I'd really recommend it to the Hip Hop heads out there who've not yet heard the album. It's amazing how shit they are today ( I don't like BEP) and how they actually had talent back in the mid to late 90's. I'm not a huge R&B fan but this sort of funk and groove I can deal with.
It's also shocking to see how some of their lyrics have come back to prove hillarious
"I see you try to diss our function,
By stating that we can't rap,
Is it because we don't wear Tommy Hilfiger or Baseball Caps
We don't use dollars to represent,
We just use our innocence and talent"
Might have been true back then before they became the money/cash generating sell out machine they are now.
Ultimate777
10-07-2011, 22:39
They sold out, simple as that. The main stream is where the money is at so they took that route.
I just want to punch every member in the face every time I see them now. Someone just needs to pour gas on each and every one of them and just blow them up
Jonno394
10-07-2011, 22:44
I've been listening to their first two BEP albums quite a bit over the past few weeks and I was really impressed, from what I heard though their execs basically said either change or die. I suppose they felt selling out was better than fading into nothingness.........shame really, as they seemed to have a great sound and style and Kim Hill/Macy are superior to Fergie.
CjWXWTKa5kI
Damn, I hadn't heard the first song you posted Jonno, it's definitely got that funky sound, it also kind of reminds me of Arrested Development.
I don't despise them for 'selling out', I just don't like their music, that's all. If we were all given the choice of sleeping on sofas for the rest of our lives, or travelling the world, being chart toppers, rich and dare I say it in the case of will.i.am - well respected. To be honest, I've always thought as long as the artist(s) involved have given us a decent catalogue of music prior to 'selling out', then I'm not hugely annoyed. Sure I'd like more excellent music, but we should be thankful for the good music given to us previously by said artist(s) and understand that they want to finally make some money in the music industry and even feed their families well in some cases.
But thanks for the original video too Jonno, I'll be putting some of their earlier albums on my iPod I think. I did hear about Fergie essentially being thrown into the group in order to give them mass appeal, but I never heard much about it all if I'm honest, that's pretty much my extent of knowledge on the subject.
Repped for the video.
IronCity

^I think selling out, sold out, when these artists were not able to sell albums anymore because of file sharing. They need to do everything they can to make the same money the could have 15yrs ago. Showing up on American Idol is almost a must. And touring is the only way to make money - perhaps that is why concert prices have tripled during the same time frame.

Sweetness as usual Mak brother.
Currently listening to Fat Joe's "I'm Gone" from The Darkside Vol. 1. The Premier beat is fucking epic, pure classic, and it's just such an awesome song. The only possible downside is that Joe doesn't go in for a second verse in the song, but instead decides to just speak some truth. It still is good though, makes the song seem even more old school in that respect, almost as if Joe's just going off the top and speaking his mind to close the song. I like it.
"Premo on the beat, yeah I know it sounds different
But his man's just passed, yeah his soul's just risen,
Cold, cold, world is the word that was given
As he see me fifteen with the burner out of prison,
Gangster - fuck that, I'm Gang Starr,
Tell Nas 'Hip-Hop's dead' now, my man's gone..."

But I'm not listening to that right now. I'm listening to this instead. This thread needs an injection of good music:

What's great about this is the amount of pain Joe is clearly in as he's playing. How come guitar players don't look like they're in pain anymore? The mentality of 'It may kill me to get this riff out, but I'll do it anyway' only added to the performance.
I don't want to get off track but this is a phenomenon worthy of further study. Joe is arguably in the prime of his career here, yet we see a more logical development in the career of Doobie Brothers frontman Tom Johnston. Compare the early performance of their classic 'China Grove' (one of the best) on Musikladen, played with relative ease, and a version done over thirty years later at the Wolf Trap (when the first guitar part kicks in, about 40 seconds or so), with Johnston clearly in some distress:

Stuck in non-moving traffic for half hour and i decided to listen to the Roadrunner United album. Don't like much of Cradle of Filths stuff (barring one or two tracks) but I love this, especially about 1.50 onwards

Use to listen to cradle Back in the 90's when they were in their prime with the old members with nick on the drums and they brought out Cruelty And The Beast. They didn't sell out with their house of horrors gimmicks and posing goth metal back then
Now nothing beats the Goat of Mendes in terms of brutality, blast beats and vocals

These hoes so excited so they catchin' every drop

Hov is the fucking King. Put him in the same bracket as John Lennon, and any other great music writer you can think of. Tupac may have been the most influential rap artist to have ever lived, and possibly likely to ever live, but Jay no doubt still has a claim for the G.O.A.T.
