Gazza may make a surprise mind....

GEORDIE football genius Paul Gascoigne says he wouldn't miss Alan Shearer's Testimonial night at St. James' Park for the world.

Gazza, who played for Newcastle United and Rangers - the arch-rivals of tonight's opposition Celtic - says the departing Toon skipper has the respect of the footballing world.

He said: "I will be there tonight and I would not miss it for anything. And as far as I am concerned it will be a big, big honour just to be on the same field as Alan Shearer.

"I have been all over the world and the words Alan Shearer are part of a universal language. I have never been on St James' Park with him before and it will be a honour to do so tonight even if it is when we are both talking penalties together.

"It's billed as England against Scotland and I will be wearing one of my white shirts. But I may have a surprise in store for Al!

"He really is the last of his kind and I do not know how Newcastle United are ever going to replace him.

"I really did have tears in my eyes when he was injured at Sunderland and I felt heartbroken for him and it's a big shame that he is not playing tonight but it is still going to be one of the greatest nights ever for all us Geordies and I am proud to be a part of it."

WAYNE Rooney was a special guest at Alan Shearer's Testimonial dinner at St. James' Park on Wednesday night.

And the most exciting talent in English football admits the departing Newcastle United skipper was one of big heroes growing up in Liverpool.

Writing in the Alan Shearer official Testimonial programme, Wayne says: "I am constantly asked who my heroes were growing up - and it is always the same answer.

"Duncan Ferguson, because I was an Everton fan and all Everton fans love Big Dunc, and Alan Shearer because he was England's number nine and that was what I dreamed of being one day.

"Both of them figured strongly in my desire and determination to be a professional footballer, but none moreso than Alan Shearer, England's centre-forward.

"My early memories of Al were during Euro 96 when I was 10. The whole country had gone football mad - I didn't have to as I was already - and England were outstanding during the tournament and none were better than Shearer.

"Me, my mates and families watched all the matches together, especially the England games when the atmosphere was fantastic.

"I particularly remember the match against Holland when England destroyed them and Super Al scored a great goal smashed in his customary style into the top of the net.

"I went out and practised Al's technique until it went too dark to se the goalposts!

"I have been privileged like all of us here tonight to watch some fantastic performances from him for both club and country, and I have also been privileged to be on the same pitch as him.

"Unfortunately, I have never been lucky enough to be in the same team as him, but I am pretty sure we would have bonded well together.

"Alan talked a few weeks ago about how he had been blessed and lived his dream. Alan, I would personally like to thank you for helping make my dream come true, for watching you made me realise all I ever wanted to do was be a professional footballer.

"I hope it's a great night Alan, and all the best to you and your family for the future." Go on Wazza :D

There were 16 arrests when Celtic were in Manchester two days ago for the Keane testimonial and there was a lot of hostility because Celtic fans were singing IRA songs in front of a building the IRA bombed in the 70's.

I know its only a testimonial, but I hope you lot hammer them.

Seen a few Celtic lads around today, didnt seem to much bother.

Our team looks a little shit to be honest, could have included some more legends, Beardo and KK would have been nice.
Bet they'll play a full strength team, with Keane and Lennon appearing purley for the irony.

We should've play someone more meaningful and better than Celtic. Plus, if we played a European team, there would be less away support and more of us lot could go.

Dont need to, its happened to my team. ;)

Missing the point though, wasnt this thread about Shearer, not Sunderland?

Just shows you though. Roy Keane's testimonial was a competitive, spirited game, with Keane leading the players on, having a go at the ref, and was desperate to win. Shearer had to have the first and last kick, and had to fix it so he won. ;)

Undoubtedly a great player in his time, but an absolute knacker as a person.

Best player of your era? I'm sure Roy Keane will have something to say about that. Or David May, who has a far bigger trophy cabinet.

I also like legends, I just dont like petty, whinging, dirty, elbowing, cheating bairns.

"I'll not play for England in the World Cup if you punish me for kicking Neil Lennon in the head". Aye, legend.

As I say, undoubtedly a brilliant player from 93-97, but an absolute cunt of a person.

Shearer is delighted Strachan has promised to field a strong side and is only disappointed injury will prevent him playing.
The Tyneside legend said: "It will be a great night and everyone in the club is looking forward to it.
"This has been my playground for the last 10 years. The only difference is, there have been 52,000 there and the noise they make when I've scored a goal has been incredible. It's been a great 10 years."
Shearer's future is still in doubt and could depend on Glenn Roeder getting approval from the Premiership to continue as manager.
The cult hero is expected to be named as Roder's assistant if he does get the job on a permanent basis.

Nee wonder nee other cunt wanted the job. Bigger than the club.

OK again I can only apologise for finding something funny, and to me a Legend isnt defined by a trophy cabinet I use other factors but obviously people will have differing opinions on the term Legend. I bet there are players you really like but I may not, that's the joy of the beautiful game mate, I dont wish to argue with you over this but next season I will discuss footballing matters between our clubs rather than somebody elses.

Ah yes, because having a ton of medals won mainly because of who you played with is a prequisite to being a great player. If I had the choice of winning 10+ medals with Man U and being betrayed and disregarded by Alex Ferguson or playing and scoring for my local team and leaving a legend, I know what I'd rather do. He's better than any player that had played at Roker Park and ever will play at the Stadium of Shite. Fact.

One thing that has been mentioned by DM and others, is the fact we paid £15m for Shearer, but didn't win any trophies, and how this means that he was a waste of money. We bought Shearer to score goals, and that's precisely what he did, 206 times, of course none of those goals won us any silverware, but the blame certainly doesn't lie with Shearer. He did his upmost to bring glory home, it's just a shame those around him couldn't do the same.

As I say, undoubtedly a brilliant player from 93-97

From 97-04 he wasn't too shabby either.

You're one of the few on here I respect mate, so I'll ask... What did you think of it all?

No doubt Shearer deserved a testimonial, but the whole thing just seemed puke-o-rama to me. Masks on seats, having to have the first and last kicks, fixing it so he scored the winner with his last kick, "black and white day" around schools, etc. As I said before, Roy Keane's testimonial was perfect - good competitive game, fighting spirit, all about winning, where as Shearer's was more about him lapping up the seal clapping-esq "SHEARER! SHEARER!" chants...

Perhaps it reflects the two personalities - Keane was a winner, Shearer has always seemed in it for himself.

I know what you are saying but I really believe that it would have been truly competitive if Alan Shearer had of been fit. Imagine having his testmonial without him playing at all. I think it was fitting, although contrived, that the fans got to see him - I'm a neutral and am glad he got to be on the field.

I used to hate him but recently I have come to admire the man. He is old school. You never read about him messing around in strip clubs or having affairs. Alan Shearer is an old fashioned professional, highly competitve and hard as nails.

Good luck to you Alan

I think the main difference between the 2 testimonials is the fact we haven't won owt for yonks, and signing Shearer stands out as a sucess in our recent history, however sad that may be. Man Utd have won so much with Keane, but there was never a massive reliance on him to solely deliver silverware, as at OT he was surrounded by world class players. Plus the fact Shearer is a geordie meant that he would always be seen as a hero, one of our own come good and that, if Keano was a Manc then it may have been different.

Keane's attitude has always been no-nonsense, it didn't surprise me that his testimonial wasn't a massive overblown affair, I doubt it would be what he wanted. As a club Newcastle tend to do things big, like the Shearer/Owen signings, the masks were fucking cringeworthy like, as is black and white day. It was always obvious that Shearer would come on and score a pen, testimonials are rarely over-competitive, the way Celtic were told to lay down and let us win was a bit dissapointing. I didn't think there was much wrong with him coming on for the kick-off like, it was his testimonial after all. I bloody knew Ant 'n' Dec would be involved somehow anarl, they do Newcastle no favours.

Before the match I thought the whole thing was going to be an embarrassment, but it actually went really well, the atmosphere was fantastic at times, and the whole scarfs thing worked really well. Plus there wasn't too many divs wearing masks.

Alot of fans don't match the stereotypical "Shearer is god" view that the media has of us, i'm not alone in thinking he retired too late, and that we could have moved on as a club, as proved when Owen got injured, we were stuck with Shearer and Shola.

I hope that makes sense, I'm knackered, that took a lot longer than it should have.

I give credit to Celtic, it was very respectful of them to "collapse" like that. Sir Les dive at the end was priceless. Luque finish was great as well and ramage was wank.
