Definitely Maybe

Kurt Cobain was a legend but Dave Grohl wrote 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'. One of the finest tracks off the finest Grunge album ever made.
If you like them, you'll love Pearl Jam.
A Perfect Gary

Firstly, Kurt wrote the guitar part for Teen Spirit, Krist told him to slow it down, and Dave put a drum part to it, hence the official credits listing them all as having written the song, as opposed to every other song on Nevermind, which are credited as Kurt's own work. Incidentally Dave Grohl's only composition that was credited as a Nirvana song is "Marigold", the B-side of Heart-Shaped Box i believe...
Anyway, as much as speo5 would like me to say that Nirvana are the best band "eva", it would be a very naive thing to do... This is mainly because Nirvana really don't have any virtuosic musical qualities...
Although Kurt was a capable songwriter, he never really strayed from a set formula, and frankly, he couldn't sing... Krist was, to be fair, distinctly average, although there was no faulting him at what he did really, and though Dave is a hell of a drummer, he's another who in Nirvana did nothing to push the limits...
Then there's the whole "Nirvana created Grunge" argument, which is completely unfounded, because (I believe it was) a year previously, Mother Love Bone, another Seattle band, playing music not dissimilar to that of Nirvana were ready to be launched nationwide, when the singer died of a heroin overdose and the band basically disintegrated at that point.
To summarise, Nirvana were an average-to-above-average band (you can't deny that songs like Teen Spirit and Heart-Shaped Box are modern classics) that came along at the right time to be promoted by the mainstream, and gained cult status thanks to a self-inflicted shotgun wound...
Any further comments/discussion on this would be appreciated, take it easy
Gary
(For the record, I'd say Tool are my favourite band of all time, just so people know where I'm coming from musically... Though I am partial to a bit of everything...)
What exactly have tool done for music?
A Perfect Gary
30-12-2003, 04:54
Well... I think you'll find I never claimed that they had done anything in particular for music, and merely used them as a reference point for people to try and give an idea of where my opinion on the matter came from...
However, I do admire and respect them deeply, with the following being examples of the reasons:
- The fact that they continually try to expand and develop their craft
- The fact that they choose to market ideas over image
- The way that they seem to have an ability to capture a range emotions within the music a lot better than most of their contemporaries
- Maynard James Keenan has possibly the most captivating voice I've ever heard
I could go on, but to be honest I don't want to... but hopefully you get where I'm coming from...
Peace out,
Gary

pearl jam > nirvana
i love both but thats the bottom line

some fans expect grunge from them, when vedder all along said he hated the grunge label
excellent band that has grown with time and still puts out great stuff and does awesome shows

I'm a rip-off of a collective? How's that work out, and in fact in what way could I be considered a rip-off? I made reference in my screen-name to a band... Wow, coz people referencing musicians in their name is such a bad thing to do... Ah well, that was one of the more interesting and amusing things I've seen today...
Also back on topic, I agree that Pearl Jam are a very talented band, and although they're not my cup of tea, you gotta respect them.
you ripped off their name. no big deal bitch.

I agree with A Perfect Gary. Nirvana were an average band. They have a couple of good tracks on Nevermind and that's it. Their entire rep is based on one song and one album.
Dave has done much better work in the Foo Fighters.
Nirvana have ceased to be a band and are now just a sweat shirt image for 13 year olds.
Kurt truly has died.

I know little about music but do enjoy the music gav plays in the car, nirvana included.
Nirvana was all about power chords, but managed to create brilliant songs. other than that, krist is an excellent bass player.
I hear Kurt went on to great things, re-decorate the ceiling with the contents of his head.
I hear Pig has the ability to mock a 10-year-dead depressed guy who influenced many people around the world.
A Perfect Gary
23-01-2004, 02:44
Also, the gun Kurt used (a home security model, which didn't penetrate walls to allow intruders to be shot, while not endangering other people in other rooms) meant that the "contents of Kurt's head" never actually left his head, they were just... non-functional...
Of course you knew this Pig, you were just being facetious, right?

Since no-one here has agreed with the original post I must say that IN MY OPINION nirvana were and continue to be the best band ever.
I dont think Kurk killed himself. That bitch of a girlfriend did that for him.
Munky, I meant no personal offense to him but if you read half of the crap I post you would realise that my jokes take no prisoners.

Corrections for Pig:
Kurt (or Kurdt as he often called himself) not Kurk...
Not girlfriend, wife, because as a girlfriend wouldn't have a reason to kill him, as she would inherit anything due to the lack of a pre-nup...
Enjoy...
Kurdt is fake, Kurt was just fucking around with the fans

I like the Foo's videos - Dave's sense of humour comes across really well. I have to say though, I find their music a little bland, something you could never accuse Nirvana of.
Foo doesn't interest me. Try Probot or Eyes Adrift. Especially Eyes Adrift, Krist's band.
Alright, what's everyones fav Nirvana song?
Probably Love Buzz.
Personally I prefer the Foos over Nirvana. I fucking love the Foos but that's a different matter.
Yesterday I heard something by a band called queens of the stone age, they seemed rather good.
Gaz, I appologise for the spelling mistake and for not knowing that the murderous bitch was his wife.
Probably Love Buzz.
Personally I prefer the Foos over Nirvana. I fucking love the Foos but that's a different matter.

27-01-2004, 01:43
The Queens are a good band though I personally prefer their older material to that of Songs For The Deaf, "The Lost Art Of Keeping A Secret" being my personal fave...
And it's OK Pig, I'm just letting you know who's the musical guru of Stanhope :)
And who was Love Buzz by originally? I know they're Dutch, but the name eludes me...
Oh, and my fave Nirvana song could well be Breed, or Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle (think that's the name of it...), coz Breed is always a song that gets my adrenaline going, and Frances Farmer... coz I just really like the way it's structured, with some high quality riffs...
Anywho, peace out,
Gary
Perhaps musically you are a big fish in a small pond(stanhope) gaz. Big fish in small ponds aren't hard to catch however.
Don't own any nirvana records. If I was to buy one which would you recomend?
A Perfect Gary
27-01-2004, 02:11
I'd recommend Nevermind for a first Nirvana album (that and it's likely what you've heard in Gav's car...)
Also, let's be fair, if we're making aqueous analogies, Stanhope's a lot closer to a pool of nuclear waste than a pond... and if that's true then I could well be a super-evolved fish, or a Teenage Mutant Ninja Haddock... so yeah... you think about that, while you're flying around with your wings that waste will, by the laws of comic books (for the purpose of a more interesting storyline), bestow upon you...
Pigs might fly.
Yer I like the one in gav's car.
I think stanhope isn't a bad pond. Its just full of the kind of scum you would find in a pool of nuclear waste or indeed the north of england.
A Perfect Gary
27-01-2004, 02:35
Pigs will fly (when placed within the confines of a plane) and I'm sorry, but Stanhope, and the rest of Weardale sucks, and I'm so ready to get out to Uni it hurts...
Anywho, if you like Nevermind, I'd also recommend Unplugged In New York and Bleach, but I can't see you liking In Utero... If you're down Daniel's at some point ask him for a listen of Bleach, coz he has it atm...
Imo, In Utero is the best Nirvana album
A Perfect Gary
27-01-2004, 02:56
I'd take Bleach over In Utero personally, though they're both great albums, however I get the feeling that Pig would find it too discordant on the whole, as he's... well... more of a fan of concordance... I think...
Well, I don't understand the Pig and gav's car thing, but In Utero is definately > Nevermind and Bleach
Bleach is ok too, but Kurt sounds really bad. I like Floyd the Barber and Blew tho
Gav has a car in which he plays music. I often ride in the car and listen to the music. Simple as that.
My musical taste is varied, I'd bet it is more cultured than most of the people here. Cant stand it when music is too heavy.

Nirvana changed the face of music in the 90's. Fail to see that and you fail to understand music history.
Yeah, in the Boston area.
Nirvana was part of a movement. The movement was not Nirvana.
Fail to see that and you fail to understand music history.
This thread is laughable.
What about .....
The Beatles
Elvis Pressley
The Byrds
Led Zepplin
Mozart
Beethoven
...not to mention the pioneers of the blues who basically created modern music. Christ, not to mention all the other bands that have had a more profound influence on music than Nirvana.
And don't get me started on the influence of Motown......
A Perfect Gary
28-01-2004, 01:39
Yeah, SubCrawler makes several good points here, firstly about Nirvana changing the face of 90s music, and the fact that they were part of a movement, or as you're more likely to hear on MTV, a "scene"...
Also if we're on about those who have influenced music, you can't forget Bach, who (I believe) brought to popularity, or created, can't remember which, the modern Western tuning system (Equal Temperament)
Then again, while we're on this subject you can't forget Pythagoras, who gave us our first tuning system (Pythagorean Temperament) from which all notated music originates...
And then there's all of the cultures of the world, and the development of their musical styles... and then there's Kurt... who in fairness was above average, but not hugely influential in anyway, and what he created was more of a version of something in existance, rather than an innovation, yet is still being touted by some as the greatest ever... (I know it was actually the whole band being called that, but it was kind of implied in the statement...)
Oh, and my reason for saying that Bleach is better than any other Nirvana album is probably as much out of preference of the style, as it is that it's the only studio album released that was truly what they were about, as Nevermind was their "Top 40 album", to quote someone, think it was Kurt, In Utero was the reaction to that, and so it was intentionally angsty and inaccessible, and Incesticide was the collection of B-sides and covers the record company released to tide the gap between the 2 aforementioned albums...
Anywho, take it easy
Gary

Can't say I agree with that comment. Some artist's continue to be popular after death, such as Evlis and John Lennon. I'm sure not everyone who likes Elvis was out of nappies when he died. Also many classical peices were written well before anyone alive these days were born.
The fact is although Nirvana weren't that great, they still wrote music that appealed to people in pre 94 and today.

All I can say about the whole "you're not old enough to know this band" type things is that how can people still know about, or like Mozart and Beethoven when anyone who was alive at the time when they were performing their compositions, as quite frankly they'll stand up for as long as the human race manages to not destroy itself on this planet as innovative and amazing composers, and not people who died young and can therefore only be truly appreciated by those alive at the time (Mozart died only 4 years older than Kurt if my inebriated brain remembers correctly)

All I'm trying to say is that Nirvana were just a superficial grunge band, and people that liked them did to be part of a scene, that scene was of the time and things have moved on from them(or I've just moved away fom that scene ?). I wouldn't consider a band that did minor things in a musical sense into the category of best band ever. And the liking bands when there dead, that was just a joke (all the greatest artists are dead or are gonna die some day), but it did seem at the time like there was a Princess Di affect, it seemed more people liked Nirvana after he killed himself.
Most of the more thought out posts in this topic are saying that they weren't the best band ever anyway...

Yeah they said that with the amount of heroine inside him he wouldn't have physically been able to pick up and shoot a shotgun. I can't stand Courtney Love cos all this points straight to her.
The book 'Who killed Kurt Cobain?' is written by her dad for god's sake!
She was probably jelous of Kurt because of how successful he was compared to how SHIT her music is.
Also on the documentary they interview a feller (carnt remember his name), but he says Courtney offered him money to kill Kurt.
BazHilder

Yeah that's a great track, it's the one Puff Daddy sampled for his hit 'I'll Be Missing You'

BazHilder
23-03-2004, 19:18
No don't get started on that. I love nirvana but its my opinion not fact.
if you talk about fact then its probably down to record sales so westlife are the best band ever or some shite like that.

23-03-2004, 19:35
baz you sound like a psychologist :)
BazHilder
23-03-2004, 19:53
Don't say that, I hate psychology!
I was just saying that it can't be fact even though i do agree with you.
According to some thing I watched the other night... Cliff Richard has the most UK record sales, better then The Beatles and Elvis. Also I think Brian Adams stayed at number one the longest with a song I think, plus Candle in the Wind was the biggest selling single I think.
Didn't Teen Spirit only get to number 7 or something stupid like that? I hate the charts...
Yeah i watched that program aswell, I think was called 'the 100 greatest pop stars' or something.
The charts have been in a shit state for quite a while now & I can't remember the last time I checked the top 40.
I remember Wonderwall by Oasis only getting to number 2 because of Robson & Jerome

Henry_IS_God

tomos sadly right abt the influencual bit but i reckon they're over-rated too!
Oasis, Travis, Coldplay are the best bands atm....

oasis ????????? there a gr8 band
but not atm
beatles rock the house
Travis Bickle
24-03-2004, 20:17
The Beatles aren't over-rated, what they achieved in such a small space of time is unbelievable, they changed music, 9 years I think, the beatles were together, name another band thats done so much. Personally I prefer the rolling stones at that period, more rock and roll.

If anything this thread show how ignorant most of the contributors are about music. The very fact that someone says one particular band is the 'best' shows a profound lack of understanding about the vast experience we call 'music'.
There is also a trend here where people think that having an opinion automatically makes it cool to express that opinion. An opinion is only any good if it is based on experience or knowledge*....but then that is just my opinion.
(*that's why TV/radio interviewers always give the name and qualifications of the intervewee so we can decide if that persons 'opinions' carry wieght)

There is no best band, well done. But even people with alleged knowledge have biased opinions, look at Joe Whiley she comes out with a load of crap is considered "cool" in certain circles, slags off manufactured bands but now she's judging the next fame academy.

It's also the 'opinion' of record sales, a couple of generations and, yes, music critics.
The opinion of a teenager sitting in his room wanking off to Britney is worth exactly zero so shut up and fuck off.
Come back when you know how to wipe your arse, and that goes for all you pre twenty somethings that think you actually know anything about anything.
I have yet to meet a teenager that was worth anything more than a kick in the balls.
Fact - Beatles have contributed more to music than Nirvana.

Fact - Beatles have contributed more to music than Nirvana.
Well was this thread started on the basis of contributions to music. The lad who started the thread has said that Nirvana are the best band ever. Thinking about it they could be, wide fan base, internatianal fame, obbsessive followers and catchy tunes that were taken into the hearts of a generation what more do you want from a band. I mean as for contribution to music you have to say the Beatles but that wasn't just the band that was the individuals, whose contribution's to music carried on even after the Beatles had split up. And also the Beatles best contribution was Let it Be, and that was only a defining album because it was produced by Phil Spector, I know they've released the original un'wall-ofsound'ed version and it is good but as for contributing to music the original was better.
tomo1811

well nivana still have a wide fan base despite being split for summat like 10years
nirvan are only famous cos cobain found a shot gun under his bed
If you would like to get technical he bought the gun to protect his home, that's why it was low powered designed not to go through walls.
I'd imagine if they were still around today and making music of the same quality they would be famous regardless...

They would but people say that Nirvana am only famous because Kurt killed himself, when they were famous because they were just a class band and he wrote great songs.

Er I had tickets for the Manchester gig in '94 which was part of their European Tour, then he shot himself so we couldn't go, they were big in the early 90's ............
Actually I'd say they were massive I think they'd done a couple of months in France Italy and Spain before coming to the UK.

Well it depends how old you are because if you're quite young, there notoriety now is that Cobain killed himself, and it seems to have made the public image of the band (lead singer commits suicide = teen-angst band)whereas I was going through my impressionable years (14 in '94) so I was loving it during there time and that Manchester Gig was sold out at the G-Mex if memory serves me right? and thats a big venue.

The best thing to come from Nirvana, (after the back catalogue of awesome tracks of course) was dave Grohl. They'll always be way up there but personally I'm a Foo Fighters man and love their songs, mainly their older more grunge-like tracks. Dave did a demo while he was in Nirvana called Pocketwatch. Check it out if ya can, if you like early foos stuff and Nirvana you'll love this.:D
