Ok people...you asked for it!

Who, in all of your worldy opinions, is THE best (not the top three) STRIKER in world Football since Jan 1 2003?

Let's judge these guys on thier performances this year, forgetting past performances and we'll see if we can determine, thru sheer weight of numbers, who our # 1 Striker is.

This could be great thing to have every year. We could post on the site the current # 1 ranked player for each position or area based on the member's votes...what do we all think!

Just something to provoke some healthy debate. I live for it, in case you haven't noticed!

Oh, and by the way, I still think Ronaldo is head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to this postion. RVD and Henry are worth considering...but my Numero Uno...Ronaldo!!!

(and I'm a Man U supporter!!!)

Have fun!

Alex Del Piero or Henry or RVN.

Henry, overall.

Why is everyone saying Henry? dont get me wrong hes class but what has he done since Jan 1st 2003 to make him the best striker? come to think of it, no Strikers really stand out that much. Suppose ill have to say Ronaldo for his goals at Old Trafford but i really dont see that much difference in all the worlds top strikers, RVN, Henry, Owen, Del Piero, Shevchenko and Forlan :D

I feel that RVN and Henry are not playing all that great... they are playing good but not great... and i would say mutu or crespo.. i feel that they ahve been playing brilliantly for chelsea...

Thierry Henry

It was a diificult choice between him and Raul

Gifton Noel-Williams  ok Raśl. I think if Raśl played in England more people over here would rate him highly so Henry, Roy van Nistleruud, Mutu etc get more votes what they wouldn't get if they played in Spain or Italy.

shevchenko7
14-11-2003, 14:15
Um... I'd have to disagree with almost everybody.... Shevchenko is the man this year.
RVN has a great team behind him is all. His celebrations after scoring in the Man U v Rangers game were disgraceful. The ball hit him, and he tears off like he's the greatest of all time!

MatPhillips
14-11-2003, 19:28
he was celebrating scoring a goal, whether he scores a penalty, a 25 yard rocket or the ball bounces off his arse, he's just scored a crucial goal! what do you expect!!

"Henry is just a prick, he celebrates like hes scored in the champions league final every time he puts one in (Wenger's arse that is)."

Conflict of interest between Man Utd. fans there. Must say, the above statement is laughable.

On the user asking what Henry had done this year. Well, let's take into account that he got the most amount of goal assists last season, beating his nearest competitor, Giggs, by ten plus he was one goal away from being joint Golden Boot winner with RVN.
In the summer, he excelled with France in the ill-fated Confederations Cup. And, so far this season, he is top goal-scorer.

Hang on a minute mate, i cant hear you properly, whats that noise? it sound like someone scraping the barrel :p "most amount of goal assists" "confederations cup (WTF is that about anyway)" WHO CARES? Ronaldo won the World Cup, Shevchenko won the CL cup, RVN was top scorer in the CL (how many was Henry away from that one?) AND PL top scorer which aint easy, oh he also won league as well, so what exactly has va va voom done of note this year? married a minger, thats what. And if RVN is arrogant, there isnt a word in the dictionary to describe how arrogant henry is. :D

PicturePerfect
22-11-2003, 00:56
Who started making comparisions? I detailed what Henry had accomplished in the past year since you enquired. When did I say RVN had a worse year?

Nobody cares about goal assists? Err...what? Considering nearly every other person on that list is a midfielder and he, Henry, has ten more assists then any other player, that's a mighty fine accomplishement for a forward, who is also scoring plenty of goals and was just pipped (one goal) to the Golden Boot award by RVN.

Ronaldo won the World Cup

Calendar year = 2003. The World Cup was in 2002.

Darth Daft
22-11-2003, 01:18
I asked what Henry had done to be compared to the other players being mentioned as the best in 2003 like shevchenko, RVN, Ronaldo (ok sub World Cup with La Liga its still more than henry has done) and you came up with some gayness about assists and the Confed Cup which i dont think stands up against any of the other top strikers achievements in 2003.

Im not saying Henry isnt fantastic, but he could teach MI5 a thing or two about going missing in Europe.

Im sure Thierry Henry & Arsenal fans will love it if he can keep up his remarkable assist stats come May 04. Everyone else will be looking at who the champions are. Maybe one day the penny will drop for Thierry & Vieira and they will understand why they are pair of only a few world class players to play at Arsenal at the top of their game, most players want to win trophies in Europe.

PicturePerfect
22-11-2003, 01:44
What more do you expect him to do? Essentially, the Premier League and FA Cup were the only competitions Henry was involved in and he did exceedingly well in both, going on to win the FA Cup with Arsenal. Arsenal were abysmal in the CL unlike Real (Ronaldo), Milan (Shev) and United (RVN), so how do you expect Henry to excel in competition he's hardly in?

Considering many people chose Henry, I think my opinion is shared.

MatPhillips

even though i'm a united fan i actually love Henry, i think he's a great player!! and i hate to say it but i dont think he would have converted from winfer to striker in such a fantastic way if he'd signed for united!!!! but i think he would be so much better if he did play for another team now, (Real, Ac Milan, United etc...) i think he would be better without the pressure of being "Arsenal's only threat", okay they scored three without him yesterday, but didn't he set them all up????

He's still a great player though, just not the best striker this year.

I don't think it would work if Henry played for United, personally, because his style wouldn't suit. I agree with you that it would take pressure off him if Arsenal did sign another world-class striker and they intend to. With some luck, maybe even in January. We've been linked to Kluivert but I'm not too optimistic. Still, if we could bag someone like Nihat (Sociedad) I would be more then pleased.

Saying that, I do realise a lot of big teams do rely on one dominating striker force. Teams such as Inter, perhaps.
Although, they are exceptions, the two most notable probably Milan (Inzaghi & Shev) and Real (Ronaldo & Raul). You could probably add Juventus to that equation too although most of their strength comes from their midfield and defense. Is it any wonder these are the top three in Europe?

MatPhillips
25-11-2003, 01:14
all true! Although i have to Arsenal would do VERY well to Sign Nihat. isn't he worth something daft like £20million???
got a chance of Kluivert though, if he leaves Barca that is

PicturePerfect
25-11-2003, 07:02
I've heard there's a buy-out clause of 30 million pounds on his contract. Ouch. However, if he's willing to leave, Real are willing to sell him for somewhere around the region of 10 million.

MatPhillips
25-11-2003, 19:26
fair enough, but Arsenal haven't got that with out selling someone first have they?

f3n1xtx

arsenal need to wait till its stadium is ready to have some funds.. cant imagine how strong they will be if they have cash!

I didn't think Henry was the best. But now I do. He has always been the best in the Premier League (statistically Van Nistelrooy fares well, but not entertainment wise). But the only competition he seems to have failed in was the Champions League. Now, after putting in a blistering performance against some top quality defenders, he's my outright pick. Just look at the way he skinned the likes of Cordoba and Zanetti.

And don't forget his form for France, where he got the golden ball at confeds cup and was the outstanding player during qualifying for Euro 2004.

I thought Vieri was a top striker as well. But he was pretty ordinary against Arsenal. Otherwise, I think Raul is a top striker, Ronaldo on his day with Van Nistelrooy the best goal poacher. Don't leave out Schevchenko either.

After yesterday's utterly amazing performance against Inter, Henry has moved up in the bid for FIFA World Player of the Year. Reports suggest he will win it this year with Nedved and Maldini getting second and third place respectively.

I don't think Thierry will win (not enough Europe exposure) it but I think he could edge into the second or third place slot.

I hope maldini wins, he deserve it! but defenders hardly have glory compared to strikers

The guy acts like he has PMS when he palys for Inter. A move seems inevitable unless he or Zach can work him out. Pity because earlier this year he said Inter was THE club (referring to how much he's moved during his career and his desire to have some stability.)

MatPhillips
27-11-2003, 00:06
how much would they want for him at this stage of his career. 15, £20 million, more? who'd pay it? (do chelsea need him) does he speak english??? as he grew up in austrailia i assume he does. that would mean he could settle in well...get him United! lol ;)

is he still on that "self imposes silence" where he doesn't celebrate or anything?

has HE said he wants to leave?

Not to mention Crespo plays at Chelsea, and his departure from Inter is one of the main things big Christian is peeved about. He speaks very fluent English, I've heard. Could teach the foreigners at Chelsea something.

Self imposes silence? He even shrugged M.Materazzi off him when the defender tried to hug him. Although, I wouldn't want that cheating git on me either. No, he doesn't celebrate at all these days. In fact, he looks on the brink of crying everytime the camera closes up on him.

I think Valencia might get him (swap deal). Inter have been eyeing Aimar for ages now.

Vieri will sign for an english club. Chelsea being the favourites. Man Utd should go in for him as we need another clinical striker for our attack. Which ever team that buys him will be at least £20m out of pocket.

Schevchenko. Henry may be a slightly more complete player, but Schevchenko scores them when they really matter. Henry was so useless in the CL games against Chelsea that Arsenal should have let Kanu take his spot and RVN is silent this season. Ronaldo is close to top, but he needs to learn to coexist with another striker. honorable mention has to go to Ronaldinho. 17 goals from a very withdrawn/sometimes midfeild role (Kaka eat your heart out)
