Fifa have announced a six-man shortlist for the Gillette Best Young Player award, with controversial Portugal winger Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentina wonderkid Lionel Messi both in contention for their performances at the World Cup finals.

Spain midfielder Cesc Fabregas, Germany hot-shot Lukas Podolski, Swiss star Tranquillo Barnetta and Ecuador's Luis Valencia are the other names in the frame for the prestigious prize in its inaugural year.

Fans have been able to vote from a list of 40 players since the start of the tournament, with Valencia, Ronaldo and Messi topping the poll, whilst the other three members of the shortlist have been nominated by Fifa's Technical Study Group.

Villarreal midfielder Valencia somewhat surprisingly topped the fans' list with a massive 331,087 votes after his country's run to the second round, whilst Ronaldo, currently hitting the headlines after Portugal's defeat of England, polled 241,775 and Barcelona starlet Messi 118,733.

The 14 members of Fifa's Technical Study Group will now deliberate over the final six, with a decision set to be made on Friday.

Fifa will choose the winner based on the criteria of "style, charisma, fair play and appetite for the game, as well as pure technical skill," according to the official World Cup website.

I'd say Ronaldo deserves it, apart from his deveous wink at the England game and whatnot, he's showed to be a right good player when on form. I reckon it will be close with him and Podolski.

Why the hell is Messi in for a shout?

I hope Podolski wins, Ronaldo has cheated far too much to deserve it. And why the hell is Messi on the list?

Podolski or Barnetta for me they've both impressed.

Ronaldo hasn't done enough.

Messi must've played about an hour and the other two didn't stand out too much

I think Podolski should get it, even tough I hate him.

1st Fabregas - When he came in did brilliantly and showed why there's so much hype about him
2nd Podolski - Started off slowly but still at 21 and moving to Bayern, he's gonna be some player in 4 years time.
3rd Ronaldo - Yes he's a cheating diving cunt but in all the other games has looked impressive, though he's still some way off becoming the player he's expected to be.

what age is Lahm? Ronaldo's had a good tournament regardless of what the haters say...I was impressed by Barnetta aswell I thought he had a great tournament. Although I cant see it going to a player that didnt get past the last 16...so I reckon Ronaldo or Podolski will get it...and for Messi to be in the list is just silly.

Lahm is only 21 i think.

Shocking that he isn't in that list. He'd be my no.1 choice.

How old is Rubery ? I think has has got better in every game and does a hell of a lot of work for France and isnt scared to try different things

06-07-2006, 14:21
Heh...Rubery Ribery is 22 I think...

Yeah...Lahm would be my choice...

Valancia - I wouldn't even had known he was a youngster..but he had a first team spot from the start...so he's defintiely due some credit.

Club loyalty aside...Fabregas made a lot of difference to Spain...and to be fair...C. Ronaldo is very influential at Portugal...

It's tough...but no way should Messi get it.

Lahm should but wont get the golden boot because hes a defender and FIFA like choosing midfielders and strikers that score lots of goals because they dont always consider defenders to be the next big talent when they should!

Podolski has been shit so far, once again damn you FIFA.

Valencia was surprising for me, so there.

Van persie? Messi?

Should be C. Ronaldo. Podolski is not shit, him and Klose linked up well. And i wouldnt bet against him scoring a few vs the Portugese.

Young player of the tournament award, eh? Zinedine Zidane should win it obviously.

Er... I actually meant Lahm. He has looked like a brilliant left back. While he appears to be attack minded, his defensive skills are top notch. He has been the most impressive fullback in the tournament along side Zambrotta.

I think later in the tournament Podolski improved a lot, but Lahm did very well in it aswell - so it should be Lahm.

He's 22.
Heh...Rubery Ribery is 22 I think...
He's 23.

I think that prize it's about under 22 ages for player, in that case neither of them could be the winner. I think should be Cristiano Ronaldo.

Rambo

Out of that list i think it should be C.Ronaldo

Messi is only there coz he's Messi.

I would choose either Cuntiano Ronaldo or Valencia.

Why is CHARISMA a criteria for deciding the best young player?

wrigh2uk
06-07-2006, 16:45
I'd give it Poldoski, for the fact every young player under the sun was talked about being the player of the tournament besides him. Damm i'd heard little about him until i saw Germany play

I was surprised when I didn't see Ribery on the list. Maybe he doesn't deserve to win it, but he needs to be on that list. Replace Messi please.

Podolski, I would have picked him but he is so selfish. Klose played much better than him in every game.

I'd go for Ronaldo, he's been really good during the games. Barnetta is good but with the opponents Portugal had faced, I'd pick Ronaldo ahead of him.

I haven't been particularly impressed with Ronaldo. His crossing has been diabolical, and he's been very greedy shooting from awkward angles rather than passing to a better placed team-mate.

From the list of nominees, i'd have to choose Lukas Podolski. He hasn't been in top form, but has done reasonably well overall, and particularly well against Sweden.

Cesc Fabregas or Ronaldo. Podolski didn't seem to be around at all, he did score, I realize that, but he wasn't too hot.

Very peculiar choices by FIFA...shocking.

Podolski for me.

07-07-2006, 05:28
Cesc Fabregas was my first thought when I saw the thread title, but Valencia probably more important ot his team so he will get my vote.
Podolski and Lahm also came to mind.

I'm thinking Cesc Fabregas, after all he has one of the best visions on team spain. His future is very bright imo, because he has vision like figo, zidane, beckham, maradona ( but not almost as good as them, yet). I dont see him winning this one though, It is probably lukas podolski, he did perform better.

I'm not even considering C.Ronaldo, as said, selfishly shoot all the time, constant diving. He has the skills the be a good player, but the way he played prevents him from becoming a great player.

Ronaldo all the way. Skill, pace and amazing shooting power+accuracy.

yaohan
07-07-2006, 08:10
shooting power okay, shooting accuracy...I dont think so. If he had the shooting accuracy, he'd become that old ronaldo, who can dribble past anyone then score, but no, C.Ronaldo dribble into the penalty box, where he elegantly make a dive.

Barry

Messi would have easily grabbed it....if he played more.

I'll vote like in the same manner as the Arsenal fans (vote for the player from my team and slate the player from my rival team). Therefore Ronaldo to win and Fabregas to finish last because he is wank

C. Ronaldo should have won the prize, but i guess it will be better for Ronaldo to get fifa award for best player in the world, which i think he will get eventually, and i cant see Podolski getting that high.

Hi,

I honestly admire Lukas Podolski, I think he's a great player with also great potential and I truly believe he deserves the chance his getting, playing in Bayern München and all that.

However, the criteria used for choosing him as FIFA World Cup best youngster were... well, doubtfull, to say the least.
I mean, I know he scored three goals, but I think Ronaldo should have taken the award. But it's like people in the forum say - he's way too hated!

Also - on that - I'm really not liking what they're doing to the kid - it's obvious that there is huge pressure and lobbies to spread a common hate towards him and it obviously took its toll on FIFA, which it's not fair at all.

But anyway, congrats to Podolski, hope he ends up being Bundesliga's topscorer ;)

Cheers

How is it that FIFA is able to determine a Young Player of the Tournament award if the tournament is still ongoing?

What if France youngster Ribery displays an outstanding performance and couple of goals in the final? What if all of a sudden Italy's Chiellini comes on a gets a hat-trick? Won't such actions be considered first before they decide who gets the trophy? Podoslki winning is OK with me, but surely they could have waited and see how the tournament goes. What if Podolski puts on a below average performance and young one Mertesacker puts on a class performance against Portugal? My only point is, FIFA should have waited until the end of the tournament.

Have to disagree with you there mate. Of all the nominees, i think that he was deserving of the award the most. He has had the biggest impact out of the nominees and has been one of Germanys best performers.

Plus Cristiano Ronaldo is a crying baby so he didnt deserve to win!
