1 - Andreas Isaksson

http://img45.imageshack.us/img45/9623/aisakssonlz4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Isaksson's rise in the game was a rapid one. He made his league debut at the age of 17 and proved to be one of the top Scandanavian goalkeepers. He was then snapped up by Serie A side Juventus for £1.1m where his opportunities were severly limited. The 20-year-old did not even make an appearance as a substitute but grew in stature training alongside Gianluigi Buffon. When he finally returned to the Swedish league with Djurgardens he proved his maturity and looks certain to be the future of goalkeeping in the national side.

Currently one of the most promising young goalkeepers in Spain country, Antonio Doblas has blossomed since being called up unexpectedly early in 2004/05 by Real Betis Balompié. Doblas joined Betis in 1999 when he became the first-choice goalkeeper for the reserves in Segunda División B. He spent a brief stint on loan at Xerez CD, making a handful of appearances before returning to Betis in 2004.

2 - Carlos Marchena

http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/5766/24828ta0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Seville-born centre-back Carlos Marchena has proved himself one of the Spanish league’s toughest, most composed and most reliable defenders.
Measuring 183cm, the Former Valencia man is extremely powerful in the air, with Spain coach Luis Aragones a confirmed admirer. Marchena repaid his coach’s faith with a last-gasp equaliser against Bosnia-Herzegovina which saved a vital point for Spain in qualifying for Germany 2006. However, his struggle to stay in the Valencia starting line-up during 2005/06 could work against him in the battle for a starting berth in Germany. Marchena was a member of the Spain U-20 side that strode to victory at the FIFA World Youth Championship Nigeria 1999 and also the U-23 team that took the silver medal at the Olympic Football Tournament in 2000.

http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/9049/untitledfi1.png (http://imageshack.us)

Having first represented his country on 30 April 1997 in a 2-0 victory in Ukraine, he went on to play in qualifying for the 1998 FIFA World Cup, but not the final tournament. Nowotny featured at UEFA EURO 2000™, only for injury to rule him out of international football for 19 months before he returned in November 2003 for a friendly against France and subsequently won a place in the 23 for Portugal.

5 - Anderson Luisao

http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/4913/luisao20copyrc0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The central defender moved from Cruzeiro to Portuguese side Benfica in the summer of 2003 and last month picked up a Portuguese league championship medal with the Lisbon club. It was not the first honour in the career of a member of Brazil's 1994 Copa America-winning squad. In February 2005, Luisao - who came close to joining Real Madrid last summer - signed a deal with Internazionale to pave the way for a transfer to Italy this summer. His former coach at Benfica, Giovanni Trapattoni, certainly thinks highly of him, likening him to the former Roma stalwart Aldair.

39 - Joris Mathijsen

http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/4292/mathijsenjoris2lz3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Dutch boss Marco van Basten has shown a willingness to give fresh blood a chance in his squad over the last couple of years and Mathijsen's selection in his World Cup squad is proof that he is a keen observer of current form.
In fine touch with Alkmaar this season, this former Willem II star provides a touch of additional steel to Van Basten's defensive options. Solid, reliable and always a threat breaking forward, he has earned his chance on the biggest stage of them all. AZ Alkmaar have never been one of the more fashionable clubs in Dutch football, but their solid defensive talent commands respect.

Léo won Brazilian titles with Santos in 2002 and 2004, scoring 21 goals in more than 200 appearances for the club. His performances prompted a call-up to the national side and he went on to help Brazil win the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup in Germany. Léo said: "I'm ready to do my best for Independiate. It's one of the biggest clubs in the world and I have signed a dream contract."

20 - Daniel Agger

http://img126.imageshack.us/img126/5/384364mediumsquarext9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The left-footed Agger had been out of action since September after damaging knee ligaments during a training session with Brondby, but was back to fitness to pass an Anfield medical. The injury halted his rapid progress with club and country, making an immediate impression during the World Cup qualifiers. The defender began his career with Rosenhoj BK before moving to Brondby's youth programme in 2004. Within months he had been promoted to the senior squad following the sale of Andreas Jakobsson, making his bow against OB Odense. Agger slotted into Brondby's defence as though he'd been playing for years and his performances helped the club to the 2004/05 Superliga title. And he was subsequently named Denmark's Players' Player of the Year. He eared his first full cap for Denmark in June 2005 against Finland. Despite being ruled out through injury in September, his form again earned him the Players' Player of the Year award for 2005/06.

http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/1080/taccpj4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Part of the Italy team that won the 1996 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, Tacchinardi has found it hard to impress Italy's senior national coaches: having made his Azzurri debut against Slovenia in 1995, Tacchinardi missed out on selection for UEFA EURO 2000™ and the 2002 FIFA World Cup. He also sat out the 2004 UEFA European Championship after tearing ligaments in his right knee.

http://img306.imageshack.us/img306/7946/untitledzc2.png (http://imageshack.us)

Experienced midfielder Albelda was part of Spain’s squad that reached the quarter-finals of the 1997 FIFA World Youth Championship, and he won a silver medal at the 2000 Olympic Games before representing his country at senior level. Albelda, who is mainly used in a holding role, played twice at the 2002 FIFA World Cup™ and he featured in all of Spain’s matches at UEFA Euro 2004. His major triumphs have come at club level, as he helped Valencia to league titles in 2002 and 2004, as well as consecutive UEFA Champions League finals in 2000 and 2001.

16 - Yildiray Basturk

http://img370.imageshack.us/img370/4849/1975149basturk150jz0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

In a team packed with experience, Basturk is the brightest young star in the ranks and having enjoyed a fine season with Leverkusen, he heads into the World Cup finals in good heart. Speed is not a quality that is plentiful for coach Senol Gunes, so he was quick to bring him into the side as the qualifying campaign progressed.By the end of the Group 4 effort, he was a national team regular and much will be expected of him this summer.

18 - Darren Fletcher

http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/5702/351906mediumsquarehd5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

For many years, Darren Fletcher was regarded as one of the best of the current crop of Manchester United youngsters, catching the eye to the extent that Scotland coach Berti Vogts was even monitoring his progress. He was held up a couple of times, firstly because he was still a schoolboy when Sir Alex Ferguson originally tried to give him his debut - which would have been against the rules - and a couple of injuries threatened his rise through the ranks.Fletcher finally made his big splash for United against FC Basel in the Champions League in 2002/03, and the expectations grew even higher. He followed it up with another fine performance away to Deportivo La Coruna. In 2003/04, he made huge strides, emulating the rapid rise of John O'Shea a year earlier. He took advantage of David Beckham's departure to play many times on the right-wing, though it soon became obvious that his best position was in the middle. A brave and hard working performance in the FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal earned him plenty of praise and he was rewarded with a starting place in the Cup final, not to mention his first medal. On the international front, he scored a crucial goal in Scotland's Euro 2004 qualifiers and was even handed the captain's armband for a summer friendly.

He made his debut for France in March 2003, coming on as a substitute in the 6-0 UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifying victory against Malta and was part of the France squad which lifted the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup. Rothen completed a three-year scholarship at Clairefontaine, France's renowned centre of excellence, but struggled to make progress in his early career due to his slow physical development. He grew stronger during his three years at second division Stade Malherbe Caen. After playing 98 games and scoring eleven goals at Caen, the Paris-born player was whisked off to first division side ES Troyes Aube Champagne in the summer of 2000.

13 - Peter Luccin

http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/6827/bigmdi197428cl3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

At 25 years, Peter Luccin always has his virgin prize list of titles, just two finales missed with the Of Gironde ones of Bordeaux in 1997 and 1998. To date no selection in team of France, considerable mediums of grounds managed to be destined for its place, the selections are very expensive at Bleus. In spite of that, Peter Luccin is a very good element, after beginnings in Cannes, it integrates the manpower of Of Gironde of Bordeaux at the beginning of year 1996, it carries out there then two promising seasons. Endowed ball with the foot and enduring on the ground, Peter Luccin carries out a very good season in 1999 with the OM, even if its club fails of one anything at the time of the 38ème day of Division 1 in May 1999, letting spin the title to Bordeaux at the end of a mano to mano and a finish to suspense between Bordeaux and the OM. Marseilles succeeds in being qualified for the final of Cut UEFA but largely loses (0-3) vis-a-vis Parma with in particular Boghossian and Thuram.

9 - Julio Cruz

http://img372.imageshack.us/img372/7295/361135mediumsquarett0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

An excellent 2005/06 campaign for Inter Milan, during which the experienced frontman scored 21 times and even out-gunned his illustrious team-mate Adriano, earned Cruz a late call-up to Argentina’s 23-man squad for the 2006 FIFA World Cup™. Cruz’s height, positioning and goalscoring instinct make him the perfect alternative to Chelsea star Hernan Crespo in attack. Originally from Santiago del Estero in northern Argentina, the man they call El Jardinero (The Gardener) was given his national team debut by Daniel Passarella, although El Gran Capitan chose not to take the striker to France 98. It was a similar story under Marcelo Bielsa, with Cruz struck off the list for Korea/Japan 2002 despite featuring prominently in his side’s friendly games leading up to that year’s finals. The gifted goal-poacher would have to wait 44 months for another chance to pull on the famous blue and white shirt, marking his return with a goal as he came off the bench in Argentina’s win over Qatar in November. Cruz finished the domestic season on a high, scoring goals in both legs of Inter’s Italian Cup Final win over AS Roma.

40 - Roy Makaay

http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/1971/roymakaayimbayerntrikotfd9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Discovered by BV Vitesse, Makaay scored 42 league goals for the Arnhem club before joining Spanish side CD Tenerife in 1997 along with team-mate Ferdi Vierklau for a combined fee of €10m. Tenerife were relegated in 1998/99 but RC Deportivo La Coruña took Makaay straight back into the top division, and his 22 goals fired the Galicians to their first Spanish title in 1999/00. Injuries hampered his next two seasons before he struck gold in 2002/03 with 29 league goals, winning the ESM Golden Shoe. That persuaded FC Bayern München to pay a fee in excess of €17m for his services and his goalscoring prowess did not get lost in translation to the Bundesliga. He was in daunting form in 2004/05, scoring 22 league goals as Bayern claimed the first of two consecutive domestic doubles. He scored 17 in 2005/06, but it was not his best season as his place in the first team came under threat.

http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/9084/410879mediumsquareeh4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Like a predator seeking his prey, Inzaghi’s instincts are all set to scoring goals. The prolific striker is hoping to feature in his third FIFA World Cup™ after playing at the 1998 and 2002 finals.
‘Superpippo’ won top scorer honours and the young player of the year award in 1997 while at Atalanta. He then moved to Juventus and won the league title the following season, but lost in the final of the UEFA Champions League.

11 - Bonaventure Kalou

http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/1114/kaloupsgmaxtm6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Bonaventure Kalou is without a doubt the most gifted Ivorian footballer of his generation. His impressive career to date has already made him one of the stars of the African football scene, and at the 2006 FIFA World Cup GermanyTM, he has the opportunity to showcase his incredible talent on the world stage. Kalou is rare among Côte d’Ivoire players in that he first made a name for himself at home, in Oume, to be exact, on the west coast, some 400 kilometres from the capital Abidjan. Young ‘Bona’ first cut his teeth here, sneaking away from his father, a local school teacher, to go and play football with his friends. Once his parents found out, they made sure that he applied himself to the game, with talk of the lad’s prowess with a football spreading around the region.

The forward was awarded his first professional contract with Leeds in March 1998 - earning a lucrative, extended deal just a year later. He scored with his first touch in senior football as Leeds beat Liverpool in November 1998, going on to to establish himself as Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's first choice striking partner for the rest of that season. Smith couples a deadly eye for goal with a real aggression and a desire unusual in one so slight of stature. A fearless competitor, he had some high profile run-ins with the likes of Arsenal's Tony Adams and half the Roma defence.

The young forward is mostly used as a substitute there, since he has to compete with Croatian Ivan Klasnic and German Miroslav Klose for a place in the starting line-up. Valdez won the domestic double with Werder in 2004.

He represented his country at the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship and the 2004 Copa America. He also scored the vital qualifying goal against Venezuela which took Paraguay to the 2006 FIFA World Cup™.
