View Full Version : The Official Bwin Liga Thread
This is the thread where you can talk about the portuguese league. I know it's not the best league in the world, but it's the one I watch the most, so if anyone has any doubts, feel free to ask.
This year's league is composed of 16 teams:
Porto, Benfica and Sporting (the favourites to win the title);
Braga and Boavista (the outsiders);
Nacional, Leiria, V.Setubal and Marítimo (the teams that can do some damage);
Estrela da Amadora, Paços de Ferreira, Naval and Académica (the crappy teams);
Beira-Mar and Aves (the teams that got promoted).
The last place in the league is yet to be decided, because of the "Caso Mateus". There are three teams involved in the case (Gil Vicente, Belenenses and Leixões) and any can stay in the league. It's a very long story, so if you don't know what the hell am I talking about, go to this site (http://www.footballportugal.com.pt/_news_/liga_news_index/liga_news_-_june__july__august/liga_news_-_june__july__august.html) to know "almost" the whole story.
As some of you may know, I support Braga, nowadays considered the 4th "grande" of Portugal. This year we count on João Pinto, Andrés Madrid, Zé Carlos, Nem and Paulo Santos to win our first title.

Poor Boavista :(
At least I understand the "Caso Mateus" now. Thanks for the link :)
How many teams are to be relegated this season? Two?
Not a big fan of the portuguese league

I'm not sure. Last year there were 4 relegated teams, to make the league smaller. This year I think there will be 3 again.
And don't worry about Boavista. They did a great first half, and the two goals were great (both by Zé Manel). They only lost because they were playing a much stronger Sporting, the main favourite to win the title this year IMO.
Here are the full results of the last weekend:
V. Setúbal 1-1 Académica
Sporting 3-2 Boavista
Marítimo 1-0 Nacional
Sp. Braga 2-1 P. Ferreira
Beira-Mar 2-2 Desp. Aves
F.C. Porto 2-1 U. Leiria
Naval 2-0 E. Amadora
Benfica - Belenenses/Leixões/Gil Vicente
Why did the Porto coach resign?
Disagreement with the management board. He wanted Vannegoor Of Hasselink, but Pinto da Costa said he was too expensive. But they have a much better coach now.

GhOsT, who do you side in the "Caso Mateus"? I think Belenenses should be allowed to stay up with Gil Vicente relegated. Leixoes should not get involved as they wouldn't have been promoted in any case.
The case is a bit confusing. I really don't know who is right. In my opinion, they are all half right, half wrong. I will try to do this in the place of the three clubs:
Gil Vicente - They showed to be a better team than Belenenses in the season, and Mateus only played 4 matches. Also, Mateus is considered "illegal" because he played has an amateur in the first half of the season (in a team called Lixa), and according to the rules you have to play one year as an amateur to play by a professional team. But Gil Vicente is arguing that he didn't have a contract with Lixa, that he had a contract as a doorman in a hotel. They also say that the Liga didn't find a problem in Mateus contract, and that they let him play.
Belenenses - They are trying to take advantage of the situation, and in their eyes they should stay in the 1st league because Gil Vicente played with an "illegal" player, and as they were the "first" of the relegated teams, they are the ones who should stay.
Leixões - As Belenenses, they think that Gil Vicente should be punished, but they think that Belenenses got relegated fairly, so as they finished in the 3rd position in the second league, they should be the ones to play in the 1st league.
Based in these arguments, I think that Gil Vicente is right and should stay (if they are saying the truth).

Bloody hell it isn't straightforward
And this is only the tip of the iceberg. The media are already saying that if Gil Vicente take this to Brussels this might be another Bosman case.

But surely if it goes on for too long there are going to be far too many outstanding league games to play in a short space of time in order to catch up?
I really don't know how are they going to solve this. And FIFA is threatening Portugal by saying that they won't let the portuguese clubs enter the european competitions. And I could sense that this was going to be Braga's year in the UEFA cup.

I'd love to see Porto excluded from the Champions League
Me too, but then Braga wouldn't win the UEFA Cup...

No! It's our year. The final is in Scotland and we have Le Gaffer.
I like the Portuguese league. Although only get seeing matches that they repeat mid week about 3.00 am. Sometimes they will repeat the same match the following week.
I'm not bothered who really wins it. Except for Porto, because they seem to always win it lately. And except for Sporting Lisbon since they where hoops. So I guess I like Benfica. I do like to see teams like Braga and Boavista do well.

Sorry to post in Portuguese but I'm too lazy right now to translate it
This is really true, Ghost? How is your federation react to that?

For a guy who was not a big fan of the portuguese league, you seem to post a lot in this thread  . Jorgensen was definitely the man of the match and I hope he plays like he did yesterday against Inter. But at least we discovered another talent, Nani, who made a brilliant debut and was the best portuguese player. Still, I personally don't like him, as he seems to be arrogant and he's also inconsistent.
This is really true, Ghost? How is your federation react to that?
I don't know if it is true. But if it is, Gilberto Madaíl is a bigger liar than I thought, because after the meeting with FIFA, he said that they didn't talk about the punishment, that they only said that this was a very serious case that must be resolved quickly.
And the decision is made: the FPF have decided that Belenenses are right, so they stay in the first league, therefore Gil Vicente and Leixões are in the second league. Gil Vicente will decide thursday if they take the case even further or if they accept the punishment. Leixões have already accepted the decision.

If Gil Vicente goes through with this, we have to kill their chairman. He's such a peasant....
And did you see his comments on Sic Noticias, where he said that "Caso Mateus" was known not only in this planet, but in the entire galaxy  .
Portugal will play Finland this wednesday. Carlos Martins and Hugo Almeida are injured, but Almeida will probably recover before the match. Deco can already play and will replace Moutinho in the starting eleven.

Now "Apito Dourado" has another chapter, it is said that some phone calls were made between the league, porto and Boavista chariman's to screw Benfica in 3 matches in the 2003/2004 season. Now imagine what we suffered in 10 years when porto won everything, with an "extra help"....
Don Sweey
05-09-2006, 14:18
Would Boavista really help Porto though?
I don't think that Boavista would help Porto. And I don't think that they had an "extra help" in all the league titles they won in the last ten years, they had a good team in the mid/late 90's, with Jardel, Drulovic, etc.

It's funny that in this case (about Benfica) a member of porto's board (a chairman's close friend) was caught calling the referee and saying to him: " You know who's the man here, and you know what to do. We have to harm Benfica!"
That was the phone call....that game we lost 3-2 against Nacional da Madeira, i still remember that in the 10th minute Nuno Gomes was tackled really hard in the box and the ref said: "play on!". As you can see, our football is very, but very professional....
Benfica is not the only club to be screwed. Last year, Braga were in the 1st place for 5 or 6 weeks in a row, but then came the consecutive "mistakes" made by the referees, and we eventually finished in the 4th place. Unfortunately, in Portugal only 3 teams can be champions, Benfica,Sporting or Porto. It's quite sad really.

Boavista  even though it was a season when none of the big three could perform consistently.
Braga won yesterday the opening match of the second fixture against Aves. It was a terrible match. The only goal was scored by Wender (penalty), and Cesinha (Braga) saw a red card for kicking an Aves player.
Two matches will be played tonight:Benfica (already with Rui Costa but still without Miccoli and Simão) will play against one of the best portuguese teams, Boavista, while Sporting will try to win for the first time in years in the "Choupana".

We won 3-0 :shocking: (and Benfica had two players sent off)
EDIT: Benfica had THREE players sent off! :shocking:
:shocking: . Three fantastic goals, two by Linz and one by Kaz. The three new signings (the previous two plus Grzelak) were just amazing. Nuno Gomes, Manu and Petit saw the red card, but in my opinion Mario Silva (Boavista) and Leo (Benfica) should have seen it too.
Sporting won for the first time ever in the Choupana. Nani scored the only goal of a boring match.
Tomorrow matches are:
Académica - Naval
Belenenses - V. Setúbal
P. Ferreira - Marítimo
E. Amadora - F.C. Porto
About "Caso Mateus": Gil Vicente have already decided that they won't show up tomorrow for their second league match, and that they will keep going to civil courts until they are declared right, even if that costs them the relegation to the amateur leagues.

looooooooooooooooooooool, it's great to see how you manipulate the brits into thinking that porto are shitty cheats.
first of all, none of the acusations against porto have been proven, second benfica's chairman (yes the comunist peasant with a moustache) has been recently involved in "apito dourado", because if you like rumours there are lots for benfica
benfica has never been able to cope with porto's rising as the best portuguese club, it's quite sad actually, go shag a sheep benfica rednecks
I'm neither Portuguese nor a Benfica fan. Your comments are a disgrace as they would be from a blind Porto fan. I don't like any of the big three, but alongside my great likeness for Boavista is my utter contempt for dirty, filthy Porto.
GhOsT, thanks for the info :). Gil Vicente should bite the bullet, do they honestly believe it is worth the risk of being relegated further? Silly.

Yes, I think that they should bite the bullet. They are being pathetic now, and because of them the portuguese teams probably won't play in the european competitions this year. If that happens I hope that their president (Fiuza) gets raped by the entire mozambican national team in a dark alley.

Today 4 games were played:
Estrela da Amadora - Porto
Porto won in Estadio da Luz against a very weak Estrela da Amadora by three goals, who were scored by Rui Duarte (own goal), Raul Meireles (fantastic goal) and Lucho.
Belenenses - Vitória de Setúbal
Belenenses played their first game of this year's Liga (due to "Caso Mateus") and the result couldn't be better: a two nill victory over Vitória de Setúbal, with Zé Pedro and Roma scoring the winning goals.
Académica - Naval
Académica were surprised by Naval in their home. Lino scored in the first half for Académica, but Naval only needed three minutes in the second half to score two goals (Nei and Lito) and steal the three points from the home team.
Paços de Ferreira - Marítimo
Paços de Ferreira defeated Marítimo by 2-1. Ronny was the man of the match, scoring two goals, and became the top goalscorer of the league. The right back Briguel scored Marítimo's goal.
Tomorrow will be played the last game of the fixture: União de Leiria - Beira Mar.
União de Leiria - Beira-Mar
The final score was 2-2 in a match spoiled by the referee. Beira-Mar were winning 2-0 until the last 10 minutes with Wegno and Vasco Matos scoring the goals. Sougou scored after a fantastic sprint in the left (with a little help of Alcaraz though). But in the 86th minute, the same Sougou dived in the penalty area, and the referee awarded the penalty for the home team. The keeper (Danrlei) saw the second yellow, just minutes after Beira-Mar's third substitution. Wegno (who scored the first goal) took the goal-keeper gloves and failed to save the penalty. Then, in the 90th minute, Vasco Matos (Beira-Mar) and Tixier (União de Leiria) saw the red card, and in the 92th minute Valdomiro (Leiria) elbowed Torrão in the head, with the linesman seeing the whole thing and ignoring it.

Nice style ;)
Porto were always going to win at Estrela de Amadora so that wasn't a surprise at all. Have Sporting looked good so far?
Last year Porto lost against Estrela. I think the final score was 3-1, and the referee invalidated a clean goal for Estrela. And as they played in Benfica's stadium, I was expecting a surprise from Estrela.
Sporting had a great a great pre-season, winning a spanish cup (against Sevilla and Huelva) and a portuguese cup (winning Benfica by 3-0 and Deportivo by 1-0). They did well against Boavista, and they won for the first time ever in the Choupana, so I think they are looking good.
And 2 teams will be relegated this season.
Three portuguese teams played yesterday and tonight in the Champions League. I'm going to give you a quick review of their matches:
Sporting - Inter
Sporting won 1-0 in their home. With a far less experienced team, they managed to beat a galactic Inter, with a great goal by Caneira. They will certainly cause damage in this group, and in my opinion they will fight for the second place with Inter.
Best player of the match - Miguel Veloso.
Players to look out for in this year's CL: the youngsters Yannick Djaló, Nani, Miguel Veloso, João Moutinho and Custódio and their top goalscorer Liedson.
Porto - CSKA Moscow
I didn't see this game, because all my family supports Benfica and we saw their game instead. But of what I heard, they missed a lot of chances, including a ball that hit the post. They are in a tough group, but if they work hard, they can qualify for the last 16.
Best player of the match (from what I heard) - Anderson
Players to look out for in this year's CL : Anderson and Lucho Gonzalez (both were aproached by Barcelona this week).
F.C. København - Benfica
A really boring match. Story of the match: the two teams played for the draw. Benfica only had one good chance to score, when a ball hit the post. It's really hard to tell if they are going to qualify for the next round, but I think that a Benfica in top form can fight with Celtic for the second place.
Best player of the match - It's hard to choose, because all the 22 players in the pitch played pretty bad. But if I have to pick one it would be Hutchinson.
Players to look out for in this year's CL: The wingers Manu and Paulo Jorge; "Il Maestro" Rui Costa and the right back Nelson.
Tomorrow it's time for the portuguese teams in the UEFA Cup to shine. Braga will play against Chievo Verona; Vitória de Setúbal will play against Heerenveen and Nacional will play against Rapid Bucharest. Although I didn't see any game of Rapid and Heerenveen this year, I think that both will have no problems with Nacional and Setúbal, because they are very weak this season. In my opinion, Braga will be the only portuguese side to qualify for the next round.
UEFA Cup games involving portuguese teams:
Rapid Bucareste 1 - 0 Nacional
Sp. Braga 2 - 0 Chievo Verona
V. Setúbal 0 - 3 Heerenveen
As I predicted, Braga are probably the only portuguese team that will qualify for the next round, although Nacional still have a very remote chance of doing it. Braga scored in the beginning of the first half and in the last minutes of the game, by Paulo Jorge and Wender (penalty), and the best player of the match was Maciel. Vitória de Setúbal can kiss the UEFA Cup goodbye.

Check the previous one too where they have three losses ;) Gotta love the website or wherever else you get that table from :D
Three portuguese teams played in the CL this week, and the results couldn't be worse. Porto and Benfica lost against Arsenal and Manchester United, and they both have 1 point in 2 games. But Sporting managed to get a draw in Russia against Spartak Moscow, and they are now in second, with 4 points, behind Bayern who got 6. I think they have a very good chance to get to the next round, and in my opinion they are the only portuguese team that will do it.
Tomorrow are held the UEFA Cup games, and three portuguese teams will play:
Chievo - Braga
Heerenveen - Setúbal
Nacional - Rapid Bucharest
Braga won the first match against Chievo by 2-0, and I think they can get through to the group stage. Nacional lost against Rapid Bucharest in Romania by 1-0, but they won their first game in the league this weekend, so maybe they can manage a win in their stadium. Setúbal have the hardest task, because they lost in the first leg in their home by 3-0, and they are playing really bad this season.
Congratulations to Braga, for qualifying for the group stages of the UEFA Cup. The other portuguese teams didn't do so well: Vitória de Setúbal and Nacional were eliminated, by Heerenveen (agg:3-0) and Rapid Bucharest (agg:3-1).
Finally some good news for the portuguese league: Gil Vicente decided to appear in the next game after the decision of a civil court. They missed 3 matches in a row, and if they missed this one they would be relegated to a lower division. This might be the end of Mateus Case.
This weekend we have good games: Braga recieves the leader Porto; a clash between two historic clubs (Boavista and Belenenses) and Sporting receives Leiria, who are always tough to beat. Here is the full list of this weekend games:
29-09-2006
Naval - Beira-Mar

A good week for us! First, a win over Chievo to qualify for the UEFA Cup, and then a victory over the leaders. Great exibithion last night by all the players.
Can you tell me the site from where do you take the Serie A table? Because my sources are always wrong.

Sometimes I feel like Tom Hanks talking to a volleyball  .
Our league has always a new name each year, which can be very annoying. This year the league is sponsored by Bwin, hence the name Bwin Liga.

A volleybal
If I'm not mistaken Braga is playing AZ Alkmaar for the UEFA Cup. Sevilla looks the strongest, while I can't judge Grasshoppers(1st is Swiss Ligue) and Liberec(2nd in Czech league).
AZ is strong, in particular in the UEFA Cup where they rarely lose. What do you think Ghost?

Ah, I see.
I think Braga have a good chance to get trough to the next round, barry. We'll play against the weakest teams in our home, and against the big ones away. This could be an advantage, because the weakest teams are our main opponent, and if we manage to win both games, we can get at least the third place, leaving Sevilla and AZ fighting for the first place. What do you think?
By the way, here is the complete group:
Sevilla
AZ
Grashoppers

Knowing AZ they'll probably grab the homegames by the throat, and usually they don't have too much trouble away although that's when they are weakest.
I wouldnt be surprised if they came out on top, although they seem a touch out of form at the moment.
Our first game is gainst them in Holland. I hope they won't recover their top form until then.
By the way, congratulations barry and Sweey for becoming administrators.
Here are some news to keep this thread alive.
Gil Vicente have opened up disciplinary proceedings against their Angolan player Mateus (the player who gave the name to the big scandal in Portugal), who did not return to training Tuesday after international duty in Angola at the weekend. However, António Fiúza, Gil's president, is not worried because he already talked with his agents, who said that he will return soon.
Herminio Loureiro, the new Liga president, said that he will create a league cup. He also said that he wants the professionalization of the referees in Portugal.
Yannick Djaló and Miguel Veloso will renew their contract with Sporting until 2011.

Naval at home won't be easy. GhOsT, are we generally playing two in attack (Fary and Linz) and two wingers or just one centre forward (presumably Linz) and flooding the midfield with five?
I think that they are playing with Linz on the front, with Zé Manel supporting him and Grzelak on the right wing. Then they have Tiago, Lucas and Kaz on the midfield and Ricardo Silva, Cisse, Mário Silva and Helder Rosário in the back. As usual, William is the keeper.
Don Sweey

Good old William! :D Any idea how Cisse is doing? He was regarded as having a lot of potential.
I really don't know, because I don't see every Boavista game. But I guess he's doing alright.

I'm really happy with how Linz has been doing this season. One of the better aspects of our team.
Do you think anyone will realistically be able to stop Porto from winning the title? I personally don't, they seem too strong in every department.
I think that all candidates can win the league this year. I'll give you a brief analysis of the 4 teams:
-Porto depends too much on one player: Anderson. If he gets a serious injury or if he leaves the club in January, Porto will be in deep trouble.
-Sporting have a pretty good team. They only lost one game, against Paços de Ferreira and that's because they were clearly robbed. Paços' goal was scoared with the hand and the referee should have given 1 or 2 penalties to Sporting.
-Benfica have the same problem as Porto: they depend too much on Rui Costa. With him, they always make a great exibithion, without him they play like shit. I'm not seeing them winning this year.
-Braga have a great team on paper, but they are out of form at the moment. In my opinion, they aren't performing well because they have a lot of pressure on their shoulders, as they are considered one of the favourites to win the league this year, which didn't happen in the previous years.
I hope this answers your question.

I was hoping you wouldn't mention the Naval defeat. I watched Jesualdo Ferreira on the Porto bench last night, smiling each time things worked out and couldn't help but think about what he would have brought us at Boavista this season and how much of a major coup he was before Porto got their grubby hands on him.
I saw the second half and Naval dominated, Boavista players looked like they were lost. We are going to play against Naval in the next weekend and we must play really well if we want to beat them.
About Jesualdo and his career in Boavista, I reckon that the only thing he could do this year for them was a good run in the Portuguese Cup, as they have a mediocre squad with few options available on the bench. As for the league, maybe he could get a 4th place. He is a good coach, but he doesn't do miracles ;)
Don Sweey
18-10-2006, 16:41
 true, our squad looks weak all over. Aside from Linz and about four others, I'm not particularly confident in what we have - but then as I don't get to see us play a lot that could just be me.
The ones that impressed me the most were Linz, Kaz and Grzelak. I need to pay more attention to Zairi, as he seems to be a good player too. But I'm really deceptioned with Ricardo Sousa, as I thought he would be the same from Beira-Mar, where he and Fary were in more than 50% of the goals.
Oh, and it was Cisse that scored the own goal against Naval ;)
Don Sweey
18-10-2006, 17:19
Bloody Cisse :( and Rosario was dismissed as well. Kaz looks impressive :D
I like Fary although he's no Elpidio Silva....
Elpídeo Silva...one of the best strikers Braga had in the last 15 years. Athough he played really well at Boavista, he definitely reached his peak in Braga. I remember when he was one of the most feared forwards of the league.
Sporting lost by 1-0 against Bayern, although they dominated the match. Schweinsteiger, who scored the only goal of the match, was sent off still in the first half.
Tomorrow, counting for the UEFA Cup, Braga will have a hard test against one of the favourites to win the group, AZ. I wish the "arsenalistas" good luck.
My mom and dad are fans, so they're going to the game. I'll have to catch in on TV probably, since Ajax doesn't have to play. Any predictions mate?

Sorry but I didn't see your message until now. Before the game I thought that we could get at least one point. I think the result was unfair, and I still think that we could better.
We lost 3-0, although the result is a bit deceiving, as we didn't play that bad. AZ scored the first goal in the end of the first half (but their player was in an offside position), and then they just took advantage of two counter attacks. What are your thoughts on the match barry?
You have a dangerous team, you had some dangerous counters or would be- counters and plenty of threat. The scoreline doesn't show a true reflection of the game, I agree. Only the last 15 minutes they sealed the game.
Anyway, a good win for AZ. I wouldn't worry too much about Braga, AZ always puts in good results in the UEFA Cup certainly at home. Braga will advance I say.
I'd really want to believe that, but in the UEFA Cup we always have trouble with the "smaller" teams.

Come on Sporting! :ninja: Nacional will be tricky visitors...hopefully we can get our act together and push up the table.
Nacional are weaker this year, so they shouldn't cause any trouble to Boavista. Sporting have a pretty good chance to win this sunday, as Anderson is injured. I predict a 2-1 win for Sporting.
Don Sweey
21-10-2006, 19:57
Weaker than last season yet leading us 2-0 already :crymore:
EDIT: We look absolutely awful. 3-0 to Nacional now - needed Linz to score that penalty in the first half. Mario Silva's sending off at the start of this second half hasn't exactly aided matters either.
0-4 :shocking: . I never thought that Nacional would win, nevermind for such a big difference. And it could be a lot worse for Boavista; Nacional could score at least 6 or 7 goals if they didn't miss the opportunities they had. Cisse scored another own goal. It looks like you jinxed him.
Boavista coach Zeljko Petrovic was sacked this weekend due to bad results. It's confirmed that their next coach is Jaime Pacheco, who led them to their only title.

It's hard to remember that we beat Benfica 3-0 at the start of the season. If we hadn't, we'd be completely screwed in the league at present.

Thanks man, we're definitely going to need it, because we have 6 injured players. Two or three more and it would be like playing FM
Braga won by 4-0 in a game where we could have scored a lot more. Now all we have to do is getting the 3 points from Grashoppers and we should be able to progress to the next round.

Braga's coach Carlos Carvalhal left the club yesterday for personal reasons. Manuel José, Al Alhy's coach, has already turned down the chance of signing a deal with the "arsenalistas".
I found a image of Yannick's agression:
http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/5362/sportingbragaagressaopaulosant os06112006ko1.jpg
I'm trying to find a video of it, because in the replay you could clearly see that he had the time to avoid the contact, but instead he intentionally stretched his leg to kick our goalkeeper. I hope he gets a heavy punishment for this action, as Paulo Santos could have picked a serious injury.
Don Sweey
08-11-2006, 20:36
That looks nasty. Who do you want as your new coach at Braga?
Anyone but Peseiro  Seriously, I don't know. When we got rid of Jesualdo, there were rumours about Peseiro, Manuel José and Cajuda, but they are all unavailable now. If I could choose any coach, available or not, I'd pick either Jesualdo Ferreira (duh) or Jorge Jesus.
I forgot to mention earlier that Carlos Carvalhal is heading for Beira-Mar.
Don Sweey
08-11-2006, 21:43
Doesn't everything just reaffirm your initial belief that Rodrigues made a mistake allowing Jesualdo Ferreira to leave?
I guess you can say that, although I don't know who is Rodrigues. The news that Jesualdo Ferreira wouldn't sign a new deal with Braga caught everyone by surprise, as he was doing a terrific job with them. And it seems that this may be the ending of an era, as Artur Monteiro, who was in the club for 9 years, resigned his position as executive director of the Sporting de Braga SAD.

-To replace Carvalhal, Braga hired Rogério Gonçalves, who did a great job with Naval this year. Jorge Costa, former Porto centreback, is Braga's new assistant manager.
-Benfica are to enter the Guiness Book as having the highest number of fee-paying associate members in the world:160.000.

Portuguese football is making me sick more and more...now José Veiga (former FIFA agent and Benfica director) was accused of moving some money with Joao Pinto's transfer to Sporting in 2000. Fact: Joao Pinto was released from Benfica, then he signed for Sportng for free, wich means that "no money" was involved in the transfer.
Since Veiga arrived at Benfica, he was attacked a lot of times, and always from the usual suspect. This case was never known before, but suddenly, justice re-opened it.
There is some scum out there (Sweey, you know who's the guy i'm mentioning, right?) that have a lot of corruption cases to be solved, and God knows how, they never get solved. Imagine, the police had a warrant 1 year ago to get the SOB to answer some questions in the station, and guess what? the cunt was in Spain, taking a walk....that bastard have connections all over the country, in very single department!
It is clearly a campaign to put Benfica down, but they won't succeed!

Nice to see you posting on this thread Pichichi. I know what you are trying to say, because my dad and grandad are diehard Benfica supporters and they blame Pinto da Costa for every problem that Benfica have. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to defend him. It's known that he is a true mobster. I'm just trying to say that sometimes, Benfica fans tend to overreact a bit and start blaming everything on Pinto da Costa. I hope you start posting more on this thread, as this seems like I'm doing a monologue here, with Sweey occasionally commenting his club's state (which ain't great at the moment  )

There aren't any news, because the portuguese media is convinced that only 3 teams play the league. It's very hard to find information about any other club except Porto, Benfica and Sporting, even in your local area. For example, here in Braga there are more people who support Benfica than Braga.

Speaking of Amoroso, Tochaman! can enjoy his immense talents and goalscoring qualities at his very own Corinthians now :/
 Milan must have been really desperate for strikers at that time. I don't know why they love Mantorras. I think that it was Koeman who once said that he would loan Mantorras to Braga, but Benfica fans almost organised a riot to keep him. It was in that moment that they started to hate him.

Mantorras was really a great talent, but then he got that serious injury (similar to Ronaldo's) that screwed his career.
About Miccoli, it's tough to swallow but we have to overcome the odds, and beat sporting and United at old trafford.

Typical of our season really. Belenenses have moved ahead of us in the standings which isn't good news as we're getting closer to the relegation zone and playing poorly.

I think Moutinho was tempting him earlier that tackle, and that's the only reason that i can see, because Nuno Gomes is one the few loyal players that i know.
Despite that, i loved it...i really dislike that dwarf, and i don't know if you have ever noticed, but i think he is a "covered" dirty player, because he makes a lot of dangerous tackles, but somehow, no-one notices that.
Yeah, I've noticed that. And speaking of getting away with dangerous tackles, how come Sporting's Yannick didn't get a suspension? Did you see his agression on Paulo Santos? He could have picked a serious injury.

I don't even want to talk about Braga vs Boavista. Two penalties not awarded to Braga, first Boavista goal was born in a clear foul commited by Grezlak over Luis Filipe and João Pinto was wrongfully sent off. However, I admit that he awarded an unfair penalty to Braga. A great game ruined by a really poor exhibition by the referee, which affected more our side.

Atlético shocked the country by defeating Porto in Estádio do Dragão. David was the hero of the afternoon, by scoring the only Atlético goal that kicked the current cup holders out of the competition. Besides Porto's elimination, there was only another surprise, with Marítimo being eliminated by Penafiel. As for my team, we started to lose, but a fantastic goal from Wender, a cracker from Cesinha and a hat-trick by Zé do Golo put us in the next round.

A new face in this thread :w00t I didn't see Sporting, but it is said that it was a very dull match, with few opportunities and a very poor football. They looked really promissing in the pre-season, but they just can't perform regularly in the league.
This year there's really no one capable of stopping Porto. Unless something awful happens to them, they are going to win the title with at least a 10 point gap.

What is worrying is that even performing really bad this season, Boavista are only 8 points away from Braga. I hate our new coach, even more than Carlos Carvalhal. At least with him we played atractive football.
Ah, I see the Bwin Liga started again, any major transfers?
Yeah, back again after a ridicular stop. There aren't many news on big transfers, if that's your question. Kikin Fonseca left Benfica for Tigres, only after 4 months in Portugal; Alcides left for PSV (but I guess that you already knew that); Romagnoli will leave Sporting for San Lorenzo and Braga bought two U-20 brazilian internationals (Edgar and Andrade) and Alberto Rodriguez. Mainly transfers out, as you see.
Then there are the inevitable rumours, such as an eventual Sporting's offer for Claudio Lopez for 6 months, Ricardo Costa being loaned to Mallorca, Beto and Moretto leaving Benfica and Beira-Mar buying German Lux (yes, the argentinian international  )
Now I remember Sweey asking about Boavista transfers, and I read in a newspaper that they can't buy anyone because they still owe money to some ex-players, like Martelinho. I guess that you have to get used to the last spots of the league

I'm starting to get a little concerned about Braga. I'm not talking only about the results, but in terms of exhibition too. I know that any 2nd league team can surprise a 1st league one, like Atlético did to Porto or Maia did to Aves, however they generally just capitalize one opportunity, they don't even try to play equally. But that's not what happened yesterday, as Pontassolense played almost in the same level as we did, and they didn't even play well.
Our new coach, Rogério Gonçalves, has failed to impress me thus far with his "let the time pass, because we'll score in the last five minutes of the game" tactic, not to mention the "I only need to replace one of my players in the 85th minute, no matter how awful are we playing", that may well have resulted in a mid-table team like Naval, but is definitely not what a team capable of fighting for the title needs.

That's sad to note :(. Still, Boavista march on for an eventual defeat! :w00t
Boavista's game was very close, with Penalva do Castelo wasting a lot of opportunities and Boavista hitting them on the counter-attack. At least this is what I understood for seeing the match highlights. But there are two positive aspects for Boavista coming from this game: Fary is recovering his old form (he scored two) and Cisse is scoring in the right goal for a change. These could be important factors for your game against Sporting, especially Fary's good form, as Boavista are to dependent on Roland Linz to score.

O Sp.
Interesting article (if you understand portuguese) taken from "Record" about Braga's deals over the last couple of years. It talks about how we buy cheap, young and unknown players to sell them at high prices, some of them becoming leading stars for several teams, like Tiago for Lyon, Ricardo Rocha for Benfica and Nunes for Mallorca. Many of these transfers also include a percentage of the next sale clause, which allowed us to win around one million Euros only in the last year. The latest example of the success of this clause can be seen in Rocha's transfer to Tottenham, which earned us 750.000 Euros.
The article also mentions examples like Madrid, who arrived to Braga for a fee of 30.000 Euros and is now evaluated in 5M, and the most recent case of Diego Costa, who arrived from a brazilian club last summer and was sold to Atlético Madrid for over 2.5M.
This type of business proved to be highly successful, not only for the amount of cash that keeps entering our pockets (we made a profit of 15 million Euros only in the last 3 years), but also for the success of the team. Let me just remind you that Braga were a team with very low goals before starting this type of business. It's visible the way we evolved in the last 3 years: from a team whose main aim was not getting relegated to one whose main objective is to win the title.

I don't know if I'm more pissed with the fact that referees keep making mistakes that affect our results (again another penalty stolen) or with our extremely poor exhibitions. At least something good happened in our game (if you can call that a football game), and its name is Andrade. He shined by scoring a direct FK and almost netting another two. Excellent set-piece taker with great technique, I sincerely hope he starts in our next match instead of João Pinto.
And now to please Mr. Barry here are the latest news of our transfer market:
Porto - Renteria and Mareque from Internacional and River Plate respectively joined the Portuguese champions.
Benfica - They guaranteed Derlei on loan until the end of the season, whilst they loaned M. Fernandes to Everton. Ricardo Rocha was sold to Tottenham.
Sporting - There are not many news about them, because one of their president's electoral promise was to keep their most valuable players.
Braga - We signed hot prospects like Andrade, Alberto Rodriguez and Diego Costa, although the latter is going to join Atletico Madrid in July.
Boavista - Boavista denied the rumours that they couldn't buy any players and confirmed the signings of Livramento and Kazimierczak.

Ah now I see the picture in terms of the Portugese league. You both support Italian teams as well don't you?
Braga from the results I have noted they seem to have solid results especially at home!
Boavista I think I saw a bit of their match against V. Setubal...I wasnt impressed

As Sweey said, I support Sporting Braga (also known as "os arsenalistas" due to the resemblance between Braga's and Arsenal's kit) and Sweey supports Boavista (aka "os Axadrezados"), although I believe he has a soft spot for Penafiel. And about the portuguese translations, no problem :)

 thats how you spell it. Wow and what does shorla mean(again no idea of the spelling) Something like tired or crying? And can you understand spanish as you speak portugese?
Quaresma get sent off and good is he as a player? I saw him roast Arsenal at porto but thats just 1 game!
(I know a million and 1 questions)
It's ok, you're bringing life to this thread. I think you meant "Chorar", that means crying. And yes, I can understand castellano and a bit of catalan.
About Quaresma, he's a great winger although a bit temperamental sometimes. Most of Porto's goals are a result of his trademark assists (crossing with the outside of his foot).

Is there any transfer rumours concerning him? Or is he going to stay on at Porto next season?
