I love Roma because of many things. Their shirt style is my favourite. I just love it. Them on PES5 is absolute peach. They are the only team I've used that remains undefeated. Totti, Montella, Chivu and Mancini are excellent players on the game. I love playing them, they just suit my style.

I also like Roma ofcourse because of some of their players. I'm not a very keen fan, but I know their players fairly well. Totti, ofcourse the Gladiator, one of Italy's finest strikers. Mancini, a Brasilian that I have always rated. Mexes, high blood but a world class defender (France's Future ;)). Chivu, simply energetic. De Rossi, a very complete midfielder. Perrotta, someone who I've adored for some time, even since before the World Cup 02 mind you. Taddei, recently been watching him, and he doesn't seem bad. They've got talent Roma, I like thier squad this season. Hopefully, they could mount another Serie A title challenge, they are pretty good.

I've always quite liked Roma as well, I think I started watching them because when I first saw their crest I thought it was the most bizarre thing ever, so whenever they were on tele I made a point of watching.

Don't forget Alberto Aquilani - Future Italian Star ;)

Roma will win 06/07 scudetto.

I think this season has come a bit too early for them. I think what they have to do this season, is to make sure that they are within 10 points of Inter and Milan, try to get to the 1/4 finals on the Champions Leage and win Coppa Italia.

I think they will be better prepared next season.

:( I looked too late for what time the game was coming on and missed it.

Good result away from home though. I thought that Roma would have trouble travelling, but they have 2 out of 2 so far and seven goals scored. So it is a good start. away.

Still annoyed about the loss to Inter though. If only they tried simpler methods of getting past Inter, then it could have been a different story. But that is in the past, they won big today and now they have to get ready for a BIG match against Los Ches.

Roma chief Bruno Conti says there's young players waiting to follow Stefano Okaka and Aleandro Rosi into the first team.

Luciano Spalletti's team drew government praise today after he fielded nine Italians in his first XI for their win against Parma.

And Conti said: "With just £700,000-a-season we succeed in maintaining 8-9 teams and 250 young players to a level of excellence.

"Now is the moment for Okaka and Rosi in the display window, but soon the turn of Freddi will arrive, Palermo and Marsili, beyond Virga, without counting the best boys who we are developing away on-loan like Galloppa, Greco and Curci."

Excellent news for both Roma and Italian football.

Roma are looking to extend Luciano Spalletti's contract which expires at the end of this season. They are due to present him with a three-year deal which also gives him greater responsibility with control over transfer deals and youth development. The club are also offering a wage rise to £1.6m per season.

Joel

Not a good result over the weekend at all, but a great result in the Champions League tonight!!!

Going to Greece is always going to be hard and hostile, so coming away with a victory was great. Roma should win the return fixture at the Olimpico and Valencia should beat Shaktar at the Mestalla. These results would take both through to the knock out stages.

Next up is Chievo at the Olimpico. It will probably be a tough match, but Roma should have enough to overcome Chievo at home.

Hopefully Udinese can also win at home :D

Joel
25-11-2006, 23:35
I agree Sweey. I thought they wold struggle away from home in Serie A as well, but it is not as bad as I thought it would have been.

The good thing is the team is young and should be back in the Champions League next year. So if they can keep their players, then they will get stronger and stronger.

Away to Sampdoria tomorrow...hopefully they can bounce straight back form their Champions League loss and look to capitalise on hopefully Inter's misfortunes.

Results going their way, Roma will be a point behind both Palermo and Inter - which I would find rather exciting. Sampdoria will be tough having only lost once at home this season - their away form (two points from six games) is what has let them down. Fingers crossed for a Roma win.

I know :w00t

He's playing stunning football at the moment - especially when they use him as the forward rather than pushing him back and using Montella as a striker.

Decided to put it in here.

I am happy that Totti is doing so well now. He got a lot of critism in the World Cup for his performances. But it was clear that he was rushed back and not 100%. I'm sure Lippi realised this and that is why he didn't question Totti's ability.

A lot of people do not like Totti, mostly because his attitude - which was understandable - but now he seems to have finally grown up and is just interested in playing football and leading by example.

I am very surprised that he is doing the business in this 'new' role for him. As a creative player you would not think that he would be able to cope with it, but he gets a lot of help from the midfielders and wingers. They always have options open, because of the movement of everyone.

It's crazy how everythig has changed...2 years ago, they nearly got relegated and last year, I remember before the first Rome Derby, a lot of Roma players had got death threats about losing the game to Lazio...a game which they drew. And then later they went on the amazing 10 match winning streak. This year they are in the Champions League and still in the title race pushing Inter

Long may this continue.

Totti's doing it for Milan and Juventus (anyone but Inter!). At least, that's what I keep telling myself and he doesn't often act like a twat anymore. Was thinking earlier about how he used to be - forget the spitting everyone saw....he used to constantly talk to the referee, complaining about being tackled, about not getting free-kicks, about other players not being booked. All match long. He's certainly grown up, I just hope he continues to do so.

Yeah the dude is a fucking diva, but I don't care because he can produce magic when he is on form. He is probably the best player in the world in his role if he can get his mind right. Totti always plays his best games when he is concentrating on the game and not moaning to the ref or begging for free kicks. I think it's about time he realised his responsibility as Roma's captain and an icon of the club. I just hope that he can keep this new more mature approach to the game.

And yeah, the main reason I'm praising Totti is that he is our best hope in trashing Inter's dreams about Scudetto.

And Sweey I would like to know if you agree about the previous comment I made :)

Do you mean that one? If so, I'd agree. Some would argue about Kaka but he's more of a team player and doesn't like leading from the front as we saw when he and Ancelotti had the disagreement with Kaka complaining of having too much responsibility. Totti relishes the responsibility. His former attitude has diminished the continental opinion on his abilities, understandably in a way. Would love him at Milan in his current form but Berlusconi knows full well that no matter how much he wants Totti he can never get him.

I'm aware it's the wrong thread, but what's Kaka's condition right now? For being a Brazilian player Kaka really knows how to play for his team, and he often does the best thing in a tough situation. However when you are playing for your team you never get that much gloria as the players who take more responsibility. That's why defenders and central midfielders rarely get the recognition they deserve.

And yeah, I think most people in Scandinavia and in other parts Europe ignore Totti's talent because of all the drama and the spitting incident and all that (Poulsen is a dirty player anyway, so I'm not even sure if he didn't deserve it). I agree it's a shame we will probably never get to see Totti playing for another team than Roma because he is treated like a prince there. Francesco is just too comfortable at Roma, that's why I can't see him moving away. Maybe a team like Real Madrid could lay down the money and get him, but that'd just be a great waste.

Fan v Fan: Lazio-Roma

The most hotly disputed derby in Italy returns this weekend as two sides who have been doing extremely well in recent weeks will face each other in what promises to be one of the most entertaining and spectacular derbies of recent memory. Goal.com spoke to Lazio fan MARIO ZIADEH (aka flurffmeister@laziofever.com) and PAOLO DE MENGHI supporter of Roma for their views ahead of Sunday’s big derby clash…

GOAL: First of all, how do you feel about your side's season so far?

Mario (Lazio): We had a stuttering start to the season but so far the season is going well, although it’s been full of near misses, poor finishing and slip-ups to lesser teams, not to mention the Calciopoli points deduction which was reduced later on.

Paolo (Roma): We’re second in the league, competing for the Scudetto, we have reached the quarter finals of the Coppa Italia and more importantly we made it for the first time ever into the last sixteen of the Champions League. What else could I ask for? Oh yes: to win the derby!!

GOAL: What are your expectations from the season?

Mario (Lazio): I will be realistic and say a Uefa cup place.

Paolo (Roma): At least a quarter final spot in the Champions League and the second spot in Serie A would be the most probable outcome, but I want more than that!

GOAL: How important is this clash, in that perspective?

Mario (Lazio): The rivalry between the two squads is indeed epic. Derbies are very important. That's how the passion for the sport grows it just adds excitement to the game. More people come out to watch and more people are interested. And for me this is the game of the season and an important objective.

Paolo (Roma): The derby is always a different story from the league. You might be having the worst season ever, but that does not make you inferior to your opponent in a derby. Grit and character are more important than technique and quality in such matches. So whatever the outcome, it will not affect our objectives for the season.

GOAL: Tactically, where do you think this match may be won or lost?

Mario (Lazio): It will be a midfield battle. If Ledesma and Mudingayi are on form we’ll contain their midfield, but also Mauri will be a major threat on the flank and in the central midfield if deployed.

Paolo (Roma): If our defence continues impressing and conceding very little, as it has done so far this season, then we will not have any problems, and it will be just a matter of how many goals we score.

GOAL: Which opposition player do you consider to be the greatest threat to your team in his clash?

Mario (Lazio): I’d definitely expect me to say Totti, but I wouldn’t because Simone Perrotta is the honored player and Totti is worth nothing without him, if he actually has a worth.

Paolo (Roma): Well Rocchi is a good player and can score and assist his team-mates quite well, so he is my number one concern.

GOAL: Would you want him in your team?

Mario (Lazio): The bench wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Paolo (Roma): We do need a striker up front now that Montella will most surely leave us in January. If he was playing for another team I would definitely want him, but now that he wore those colours, he cannot wear our t-shirt!

GOAL: Who from your team should we keep a particular eye on here?

Mario (Lazio): Goran Pandev. He under performed in the first half of the season but when he’s on form he’s kind of unstoppable.

Paolo (Roma): Totti should be the one but if he does not play, then keep an eye on De Rossi: the best midfielder in Europe!

GOAL: What single thing irritates you most about them?

Mario (Lazio): Getting every season their hopes up winning pretty much nothing, but pretending to own the game and ending far from the top.

Paolo (Roma): The simple fact that they exist! There can only be one big team in Rome, and that’s us!

GOAL: And what do you grudgingly admire?

Mario (Lazio): The loyalty of their fans.

Paolo (Roma): Absolutely nothing!

GOAL: Who is your all-time number one hate figure (or object of amusement) from their lot?

Mario (Lazio): I find their captain, Francesco Totti, to be an arrogant, ignorant coatto and their fans tend to follow in the same vein.

Paolo (Roma): Di Canio but this year he will not be taking part in this derby, but instead he’s playing for some amateur team!

GOAL: What was the best bit of business ever done between the two clubs?

Mario (Lazio): Some worthless primavera players transferred for free to them.

Paolo (Roma): We try to avoid having business with them.

GOAL: What's your fondest memory of past clashes against them?

Mario (Lazio): Last season’s 3-1 when Dicanio scored and celebrated among the Curva Nord.

Paolo (Roma): In the past 5 years we only lost one match against them so it will be more difficult for them to remember any positive results. I have many to choose from, but obviously the first one that springs to my mind is the 5-1 of 4 years ago. Brilliant!

GOAL: What do you think the score of this match will be, and how will it affect your week?

Mario (Lazio): Lazio 2-0 Roma is reasonable, with Mauri Rocchi Pandev tearing those sissies defense apart…Affect my week? Hell no! It will make my month!!

Paolo (Roma): I’m sure we’ll win again, probably 3-1 or something like that. Beating Lazio and getting closer to Inter in the standings would make me extremely happy!

Chelsea vs Arsenal and then a few hours later, Lazio vs Roma, can't wait

Loved it when they did one of those for Milan-Bayern Munich in 2005/06. The Bayern fan said:

"Milan fans think they're a big team but they're not. They're just lucky to have won a competition when they didn't deserve it. Their team aren't good and we're going to prove we're a much bigger and better club than they are."

We won 5-2 on aggregate and missed a penalty.

Both the fans in the above seem self-centred. Still, a good match awaits us tomorrow and I'm praying for a Roma win (coupled with some miracle-working from Empoli).

If he misses the match, it is a huge blow.

For a match as big as this, you need your captain and idol to inspire you on. But I don't want him to be risked incase the injury turns worse. Roma can not go through another period where Totti is out long term like late last season.

I have also heard that De Rossi is a injury doubt too. I think he keeps the midfield organised very well and allows players ahead of him to attack from all different directions, so losing him tomorrow will be another blow.

Neither seem able to grind out results. Roma's play, while amazing at times, breaks down if the flicks don't come off as has happened tonight and against Inter earlier this season. Palermo suffer the same sort of way. Roma don't offer much in terms of aerial threat either.

Roma Complete Tavano Capture

AS Roma have completed the loan signing of Valencia forward Francesco Tavano. The Italian will move to the Stadio Olimpico on January 1 for the rest of the season.

After six months on the fringes of the Valencia first team, Los Che have decided to send the former Empoli forward back to Italy for six months.

The club began to look for loan deals once Quique Sanchez Flores - who looks set to continue at the helm for a while yet - made it clear that Tavano would not enter his plans even in the second half of the season.

Valencia were keen to keep him in Spain so he could familiarize himself with Spanish football, but offers from Deportivo and Racing Santander were rejected by the player and his agent, allegedly over interest from top Italian clubs.

Milan, Inter and Palermo were all reportedly interested, but Roma were the ones who realized the alleged interest with an official approach.

A deal was ironed out quickly at the Mestalla yesterday. Roma will pay his wages for the next six months, and have a purchase option that they can exercise in June, should they be willing to equal what Valencia paid Empoli in the summer.

However, Valencia sporting director Amedeo Carboni was confident Tavano had a future at the Mestalla: "He belongs to Valencia, and we are positive that he will continue, and spend quite a few years with us."

The move will provide Luciano Spalletti with much needed quality cover as Roma push for major honours in the second half of the season.

Don Sweey

Well I've never wanted him at Milan when linked. He'll suit Roma's style more than Milan's, that I have absolutely no doubt about. He could be deployed in Totti's lone striker role without changing the balance of the team - unlike Montella.

Donadoni Set To Call Totti

The national team coach has been impressed with the Roma player's form in recent weeks which has left him at the top of the top-scorer list despite missing some penalty shots this season.

Roberto Donadoni has promised that if Francesco Totti keeps up his current form, he will surely call him up from March, when the Euro qualifiers will resume.

"If Totti continues to have continuity and to offer these performances, inevitably he will be called-up. However, if he decides that he does not want to come anymore, that's a different story.

"Between us there is no agreement. It's a matter between me and him. I have a rapport with all the players, I talk to them and I like knowing their sensations and I do the same with the coaches. In this sense Spalletti gives me a big help."

A player unlikely to be called up in the near future is Cassano.

"He needs to play and to have performances which allow him to be called-up," concluded Donadoni.

Source (http://www.goal.com/en/articolo.aspx?contenutoid=1972 00)

I'm not sure if Totti will accept the call up. Won't be surprised if he decides to call it quits.

Don Sweey
24-12-2006, 19:09
Read that earlier and am not convinced Totti will accept. I think that'll be the last time though - if he doesn't come back in March, he'll retire from international football which will be a shame.

Joel
24-12-2006, 21:54
In a way it would be a shame for him to not wear the Azzurri shirt again, but maybe it is best for Italy to be without him. I mean, he is so successful at Roma, because the team is built around him. Also, now he is playing in that new role, which is bringing out the best of him again.

But the Italian team is not built around him (and rightly so) and he would most likely have to play in the hole behind the strikers and I don't think he has the legs or stamina to play that role any more. So with his inclusion, he may just be holding back the team.

I think it is best for Totti, Roma and Italy, if he retires from International Football. This is just my opinion.

I'd love to see Italy adopt Roma's formation....that's how much I love the way they play.

Chivu to stay at Roma

Cristian Chivu says he has no intention of quitting Roma.

The Romanian captain is set to snub an offer from Real Madrid to stay at the Stadio Olimpico, according to reports in the Romanian press.

Former Giallorossi coach Fabio Capello is understood to be set to raid his old side for the defender in the transfer window with Barcelona and Milan also considering making moves.

But the 26-year-old is instead believed to be trying to pen an extension to his current deal which expires in 2008.

Roma boss Rosella Sensi has confirmed that a row took place between captain Francesco Totti and Brazailian winger Mancini, though has insisted that it has now been resolved.

A frosty relationship between the two players became apparent when Mancini and Totti refused to celebrate goals with eachother during the 2-1 Coppa Italia victory over Parma on Wednesday.

Italian press reports were then quick to link Mancini with a move to Internazionale, though Sensi quickly poured cold water on the rumours.

"There was a misunderstanding between Totti and Mancini, but it only lasted for a day," she commented.

"There is no problem here, so what was written was purely an interpretation of events."

Roma currently lie second in Serie A, seven points behind leaders Internazionale, and have qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League, where they will face French champions Lyon.

Sensi admitted her optimism for the second half of the season, stating:

"I am very satisfied, because the whole team is giving 100 per cent. We must continue to take it one game at a time and do our best at every opportunity."

It seems all is not well in the Roma camp. This is the last thing Roma need. Totti and Mancini are arguably the to two most important players in the team they will need to resolve their differences quickly.

Roma Coach Luciano Spalletti has revealed the bitter feud between Francesco Totti and Amantino Mancini stretches back 18 months.

“There was a clash during a training match at Castelrotto over a year ago and they took the matter into the locker room afterwards,” explained the tactician after it emerged this week that the two players were not on speaking terms.

“I saw it was carrying on and we had a chat, but clearly some rancour remained. I tried talking to them and they kept assuring me there were no problems, but you could see something was wrong.”

De facto President Rosella Sensi claimed that the matter had been “resolved”, but Spalletti hints that isn’t entirely true.

“They were irritable with each other, but the evidence says these are two players who combine well on the field, so I let it run. I have a great deal of faith in their intelligence. They respect each other, say hello and lately even their teammates have started joking about the situation. They’ll sort it out.”

Jake Small
26-08-2007, 22:06
Roma was very very impressive today, especially in the first half. They are looking just as natural as they were when they were at their best last season. Once again -in my admittedly biased view- they are the most entertaining team around.

Hopefully Aquilani isn't hurt badly (I don't think he is)... he was absolutely incredible in the first half.

Totti is playing well, though they say he's in poor form currently, which just goes to show how good he will be once he warms up a little bit. He was taking a few too many crazy shots but we can forgive him for that.

Today he ran up to a contested air ball with a Palermo winger, faked and ran by it, and back heeled it through the air into the middle of the midfield on to De Rossi's foot

Great game, and also the defense was really good which is reassuring. Still I feel Roma are one of those teams (like Milan, which I remember Sweey used to talk about this all the time) who can collapse at any moment and let a team back into it... some kind of cockiness or lack of grit. They play beautifully but they still seem a little bit green somehow.

Hopefully Roma can challenge the title.

It's a shame you missed it, as it was the best match of the year so far that I've seen. Catch the first half if you want to see Roma at their absolute best; it was very exciting, though not so great for a Palermo fan. In the first half Roma had a 90% pass completion rate which, when you consider how offensively they often begin their games and how much one-touching they do...

Second half Palermo got back into it and Miccoli even rang one off the bar. Guily had a couple chances and it was quite funny as on two occasions he engaged in a 30 yard foot race... he is a small guy, felt sorry for him hustling so hard like that because he didn't quite make it either time. Very impressed with his overall effort though.

Brutal game for Roma so far. They have been looking lethargic and rushed (if that is possible) in the first half, inter dominating. And then Ibrah is played clean through, Doni saves, ball goes back to an Inter player who heads it toward the open net... Guily jumps and swats it away with his hand? Anyway red card and penalty, 1-0 Inter.

Not looking good...

Let's see if they have the mentality (and luck?) at this point to bring home a draw.

Jake Small
29-09-2007, 17:54
Yeah. But if there is a silver lining, at least it shows Guily's heart is in it for us..

Totti and Mancini's passing has been bad. Totti is stuck to like glue by Stankovic and often one other player.

Right now Roma are a little bit all-or-nothing, either everything clicks or nothing works, as if they have no 3rd or 4th gear to drop down to. Inter are opposite, and seem to be able to play the easy pass at times and operate with a lot more efficiency.

Barry
29-09-2007, 17:58
Just tuning in at half-time it seems, so far I've been treated with Leverkusen - Bayern and Portsmouth - Reading, both excellent shows so I hope this game follows in their footsteps.

There it is, 1-1. Inter have been slow from the start of the 2nd half, very arrogant.

Roma looking quite poor after the first half of the Lisbon game.

In the box they've been pussyfooting and on the attack they've been rushed and not clicking. They seem to have a serious problem in their inability to slow a game down and play with a more controlled low tempo style. Every pass must be brilliant or it's a turnover. This only works when Totti is playing well and everyone else is on the same page (Totti not playing today, he's still injured).

Anyway Lisbon is totally running the midfield... we'll see how it goes in the 2nd

Whatever they do tonight, I hope they don't collapse.

Roma and Spalletti are still, for me, inexperienced at this level and rely on "lucky" defending which is where Manchester United obliterated them...although Chivu should take a large slice of the blame for that night. Though completely unlikely it'd give me great pride to see Roma win the CL now that Milan have fudged off to the retirement home.

Wow! Good game all in all, Roma are always a bit hot and cold in these types of matches, but they really looked like they knew what they were doing.

Random thoughts-

Mancini looked sluggish and Roma was lacking direct play, great sub in Vucinic.

Roma was playing WAY too cute from out of the defense in the first half. Almost gave me a fucking heart attack with their 1-2's and backheels out of defense... christ. Anyway they were lucky not to be punished.

De Rossi was part of the problem in the first half I think; hanging on to the ball too long, and we were played into trouble, and then stifled going forward. But rather than blaming mistakes credit goes to Real for closing down really quickly on the wingers and ball handler. That said, I thought Totti did a really good job of slowing the play down when Roma was having trouble controlling the ball.

Real played pretty well I thought, and controlled more of the play. If they had more dutch in their lineup they would've probably won :ninja:

Oh, and Aquilani...

Spalletti got the tactics spot on, Roma never allowed Madrid to dominate and have lots of chances, even when Raul equalised, they never looked like throwing it away.

Well Played Roma

I like Aquilani. I want someone with balls like him, to come to Barcelona.

I didn't think Roma were particularly impressive, but they were organized and they took their chances well.

I find Totti to be a frustrating player to watch.

I hope we get and destroy them in the next round. Just so we can show Real how they should have dismantled them. :smug:

Fabrizio Miccoli domination. (love that guy)

Serious ass whooping by Palermo. Better step up your game Roma.

Can anyone who's managed to catch the Roma games so far this season let us know how the new signings are working out? In particular Menez?

Menez looks lively but needs time to settle in properly as not everything is coming off for him. Baptista is inconsistent but again, needs time to settle into the side. I don't think either have been helped by Totti's absence through injury.

Simone Loria, along with the rest of the Roma defence, struggled against Palermo in the 3-1 defeat though you'd expect him to be fairly decent over the season.

Thanks Sweey! Hopefully Roma gets everything rolling soon then.

Dangerous game at Genoa tomorrow, possibly without Totti again as he's struggling to get fully fit. Then you've got Atalanta at home on Saturday, a match you really ought to win.

You know if Motta is starting for Genoa? They'll have a decent sqaud.

Didn't you post some time ago that Thiago Motta went to Genoa or have I lost my mind?

Ah yes sorry. Was thinking you meant Marco Motta who is elsewhere. The Italian media don't believe that he'll even make the bench.

It can't strictly be that because there are no reserve teams in Italy so if you're not playing for the first-team, you're not playing at all.

He's either injured (again) or yet to adapt fully to their system in training.

Probably haven't adapted much to Roma's tactics and Italian's gameplay.

I'm interested to see how long Spalletti will be able to hold on to his job for if things don't change. Already 2-0 down at Udinese.
