LONDON, Feb 20 (Reuters) - Argentina midfielder Javier Mascherano finally became a Liverpool player on Tuesday after the Premier League approved his move from West Ham United.

Mascherano, who had already played for two other clubs in the past 12 months, was given special permission by FIFA for the transfer at the end of last month but the Premier League said on Feb. 1 it would take time to consider the application.

"The Premier League has today confirmed that the application by Liverpool FC to register Javier Mascherano as a player has been accepted," it said on its Web site (www.premierleague.com).

"The Premier League is satisfied that the contractual arrangements proposed by Liverpool are consistent with its rules."

Under FIFA rules a player cannot play competitively for more than two clubs between July 1 and June 30 the following year. Mascherano had already appeared for Corinthians in Brazil and West Ham in England during that period.

FIFA ruled in January that the 22-year-old, who only completed two full matches for West Ham in a total of seven appearances, was an exceptional case partly because the South American and European seasons overlap.

There were no details of the contract agreed, although it has been widely reported by the media to be an 18-month deal

I thought this had happened a few weeks ago? A good signing for Liverpool, he didn't do well for West Ham but I feel he is a quality player and will show this at Liverpool. Unfortunately.

Cant quite understand how fifa have allowed this, its quite a new rule, and the 1st time its put into practice - special dispensation is allowed to break it???!!

Mascherano has the potential to be a great player though, i remember he was top drawer in the WC.

Well I am happy that Liverpool have signed him as he isn't the sort of striker that is going to help them win the league. If Leverkusen don't want him he can't be that good.

He is leaving because he didn't want to sign a new contract, he wants a new challenge.

Oh, I still don't think he is good enough to help Liverpool challenge for honours.

Of corse we can. He's flew with the team and Benitez hasn't ruled out chucking him straight into the action. He only played a few times and was neglected at West Ham it's not like he played a vast majority of the games and I think that's why the FA and FIFA let him join up with us.

Definitely Maybe

I missed the Barca-Liverpool game, but did Mascherano play, and did he do well?

He didn't feature in the game. They used Xabi Alonso and Sissoko in the middle.
