Now growing up we all have our heroes, our players we emulate in the park or at least try our best to. Growing up for me that man was always Roberto Baggio. Every week as a young 'un I always looked forward to Football Italia' on a Satuday morning and the matches on a Sunday afternoon so I could catch of a glimpse of the likes of Baggio and George Weah playing their trade, week in, week out.

For me I'd struggle to think of a better European player I've seen during my time of following this beloved game that's for certain.

Wrote off so many times during a career of sheer magical moments. For one who should have never even played after suffering an horrific knee injury while playing for Vicenza and it was a mircale he ever managed to recover. Seemed to perform at his best at clubs after being written off.

AC Milan discarding him only for him to join Bologna and finish the season with 22 league goals, then for Inter Milan to sign him, then yet again for him to be discarded by Marcelo Lippi once again.

This led to the final chapter in his career, becoming an absolute legend at Brescia, scoring 46 goals in 100 games and assisting countless others. Despite the fact he was 37 and still proving to be a top class performer at club level, many Italian fans clamored for a recall for him at Euro 2004, sadly this was not to be.

What more can I say about a true hero of mine? He really was a marvel to watch, the best number 10 I've definitely seen in the classic role off the striker.

A lovely compilation Jonny. Baggio was such a great player and I consider myself lucky to have the chance to see him play live. Hopefully if I get a ticket I'll be able to go to the Desailly charity match.

Beautiful compilation lad, a splendid blend of wonderful music and the greatest ever player* at his best. As you said the startling thing is his ability to be so breathtaking, even though he had numerous 'career ending' injuries. His professionalism and personality just adds to his greatness, the character he showed in games was unbelievable. Baggio had everything, touch, vision, finishing and a glorius footballing brain, he didn't need stepovers he just strolled past defenders like they weren't there. This was in a period that Serie A was as hard to score in as it's often made out to be. He had a strike rate that is impressive for an out and out striker, but for one who plays off his front man it's amazing.

Having seen the man play is one reason to love football...

I can't watch it  I hate bloody streaming Youtube videos :realmad:

The man was an utter genius - the only player I have ever hated and thne grown to absolutely love. My reasons for hating him, though, were that he was the focal point of the Juventus attack in the early 90s and their driving force so, as a Milan fan, I didn't like him for the fact he was so brilliant for our biggest rivals at the time. He had everything and he somehow got better and better as his career went on. His elegance and magnificence are still missed in Serie A - so much so that two different clubs have tried to entice him out of retirement before now. His influence over Brescia late in his career was remarkable and the contrast in their results when he didn't play absolutely astonishing. I can't speak highly enough about this most absolute legend that I am so lucky to have seen play football for over ten years. There even came a point when, if I couldn't see Serie A highlights in full, I'd find a way to turn on just to see the Brescia highlights if he had played, even if he hadn't scored or managed an assist.

How I miss him :crymore:

Graceful and elegant players are so scarce nowadays. I've seen far too less Serie A in those days as I was young and Dutch - hating the Italian style being so much the mode then.

Only one person was paid off to miss a penalty then,

Legend. True class player. Saw most of him in his Brescia days, and was still a stand out at that age and in not one of the 'big' clubs.

All I can say is I miss the days when these guys were around. Football isn't what it was 10 or so years ago. :(

Would have him over any player in this current era!

Good job Jonnyboy. :)

My faviourite clip from Baggio wasn't actually one where he scored. It was when Italy were playing Ireland in the World Cup, Paul McGrath (Amazing player) tackled him, the ball went to another Italian who chipped it to Baggio again who went for a volley but McGrath headed it away before he could, then McGrath took a volley full on in the face from another Italian shot.

The goal with 1:02 left on the video epitomises the guy. Incredible imagination and flair with the technique to bring about the ideas he had. There are very few players like him nowadays, although Totti who is not as good does have a touch of Baggio about him.
