View Full Version : The best film ever.
I assume that this has been suggested before but I thought I'd ask. What does anyone consider to be the best film ever and why.
I think it is The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. For no partucular reason actually, I just like it.
Hmm, probably Kill Bill or BASEketball if I'm in that kind of mood.
Can't name a just one film, so here's 10 of my favourites, whether any of them actually have any claim to be good films is debateable:
Scarface
Donnie Darko
Pulp Fiction
The Killer
Snatch
Romeo & Juliet
Out of Sight
American Psycho
10 Things I Hate About You
Amelie
There are many more great films of course, but I can't be bothered to list them all, those are probably the ones I find to be the most watchable. Also worth a mention are Clueless, and Bill and Ted.
Party on Dudes
Travis Bickle

The Deer Hunter
Bringing up Baby
Taxi Driver
Apocalypse Now
La Haine
Midnight Cowboy
Manhattan
Godfather parts 1+2
Raging Bull
Mean Streets
Dog Day Afternoon
Platoon
Eyes wide Shut
Clockwork Orange
Romper Stomper
Get Carter
Long Good Friday
Delicatessan
Just a few classics of different genres I think people should see. (I am a R. DeNiro fan.)
I only saw Amelie the other day on Christmas TV, I love the way french films are put together.

I like The 5th Element. Is that good enough to be one of the best?
Can't believe no-one has mentioned The Matrix!!!!!!! (The first film not the crappy sequels)
the matrix was good, but not that good, people seemed to think it was better than it really was. the killer is the best action flick.
Kill Bill was rather good.

kill bill isnt as good as some other films.... namely ones which i missed out before:
seven
american beauty
the lion king!!
Pulp Fiction
The Recruit
Pirates of the Caribbean
The Matrix
Se7en
Minority Report (You are not alone!)
Fight Club
Die Hard 2
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
American Outlaws
U-turn (;))
American Beauty
Ocean's Eleven (the new one)
The Italian Job (the new one)
Goodfellas
Gone in 60 seconds (guess which one)
Shrek (I kid you not)
Frequency
And the most disappointing film ever? "Heat" starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in the same film. Acting was good, just the film in general was shite
Travis Bickle

I can't believe you put the new version of The Italian Job, I bet you thought the new version of Get Carter was good, or what about Will Youngs version of Light my Fire thats 'new'.
Aaaaaaagh, it does my head in. How can you call them the best film ever when there f***in remakes of classic originals.
Don't get me started on the new Oceans 11 or the new Vanilla Sky.
Heat ruled! But the new Italian Job put me on the plane so it was handy for something. Most remakes do suck ass, the new Ring comes to mind.

Actually I haven't seen the old ones so I wouldn't know. I don't think it matters that they're remakes, they were still good films to watch.
Could we do a poll of all the suggested films and give everyone one vote?

theres been a lot of suggestions pig.... that would be a very big poll....
My favourite movies:
Forrest Gump
Scarface
Sleepers
Die Hard 3
Pulp Fiction
Snatch (can´t remember the name of the first movie with Vinnie Jones, it was very similar to Snatch)
I think a "best movie of all times" does not exist.

Am I the only person that thinks braveheart was total crap?
That's your opinion, and I respect that, but I have to say that it is one of the best films off all time.
"Aye, fight and you may die, run, and you'll live... at least a while. And dying in your beds, many years from now, would you be willin' to trade all of that from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take away our lives, but they'll never take our freeeedoooomm!"
Am I the only person that thinks braveheart was total crap?
i agree i thought the point of films like that was to react the past not to takea name and completly change history its utter bollocks!
William Wallace capture Newcastle and masacred English women and children. Newcastle is such a good night out you have to hate him for that.
I agree that Braveheart was complete shite.

Braveheart is crap.
Crap historical detail (Medieval Scots did not wear fucking Kilts!!!)
Crap dialogue
Carp acting
Braveheart is crap.
It is doubly crap because it trivialises one of Scotland's, and I would venture Britian's, greatest sons.

Films that win an Oscar do not win because they are good. They win because the Hollywood cliche votes for them. And that is not just my opinion, it is also the opinion of most of the film organisations and critics.
Why do you think it is the big films that always get an oscar? Great films do not always come in great size.
Why do you think it is always the safe (pro american right) films that get an oscar?
The Oscars are a fraud.
I wouldn't call William Wallace one of Britains greatest sons, maybe most famous. That is probably because i'm English though.

To be chosen out of every film to be made that year to win such a prestigious award must mean the film has done something right. Some of the awards winner's have been classics, and I think Bravheart fits into that category.
On IMDB.com it got an average of 8.3/10, with 70,610 votes, and was 80th in the Best 250 movies ever made. Just because you don't like a film doesn't make it crap.
Most films that win an Oscar are boring dribble. I totally agree that an Oscar doesn't mean good film. Braveheart is so overhyped and historicaly inaccurate to boot. It tried a little too hard to tug on the heart strings in my oppinion.
The shit strings maybe.
Has anyone seen Cold Mountain? I'm goin to see it next saturday and was wondering what everyone thought.

how can u say it sucked. it was better than the first imo.

Well ive seen the trailers, and that looked quite good, but ill rent it and see for myself
Celtic420
11-04-2004, 07:44
don't waste your money. bad jokes, a weak plot and talentless female lead make for a bad movie. the trailer has 90% of the cool parts of the movie, what a letdown. i think the biggest problem is that the conflict between will smith and martin lawrence seemed contrived. it felt like they were yelling at each other for no reason and that made it alot less funny.
I can't believe people mentioned The Killer, talk about a BAAAD movie. after the terrorists burst our the windows of the hospital that they took over to shoot the SWAT guys who are repelling down the side of the building holding babies, i lost all ability to take The Killer seriously.
outside of those alot of good movie have been mentioned.
My Picks:
Fight Club
Tombstone
Donnie Darko
Waking Life
Dazed and Confused
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
*cough* Pulp Fiction *cough*
I liked Bad Boys II. It's one of those easy to watch films where you can just sit back knowing you don't have to concentrate that much, you're guarenteed great effects, action sequences with a little comedy on the side. If you take films like this seriously, you'll think they're crap.
Harry-Kewell

Bad Boys 2 is another sequel that should’nt have been made. The movie was 2 hours and 30 minutes long, and the plot was nonexistent. The action is way over the top and overall, all this movie contains is senseless violence, explosions and bad jokes. If you want to have mindless fun, then watch this. If you want a real move, then find something else.

Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs are both excellent Quentin Tarantino movies. As for Kill Bill, well I didn’t like it at all and I for sure won’t go see Volume 2 when it comes out. I might rent it later when it’s out on DVD though. Volume 1 wasn’t anything special. It’s way overrated and that’s solely because it’s a Tarantino film.

i loved fight club... it is awesome... i studied it at school and i love it...
as for kill bill.. i thought it was good.. but if it wasn't tarantino it would not have been as good..
Ghostbusters!! Yeah, it doesn't get any better than that baby!
Kill Bill vol 1 was fantastic, easily one the top 3 movies I watched last eyar (probably pipped at the post by the quintessential, and most excellent LOTR conclusion).
Vol2 on the other hand, well, it kinda sucked. I would have preferred to have sat for ~5 hours and watched them one after the other, and not with a 6 month break. But regardless of that, KB2 was inferior to the first in almost every way I thought. Far too much monologue, far too much chatter, and all the fight scenes (except for the 'L and B' fight scene, which was awesome) were ordinary, especially when compared to the 'Crazy 88' fight in the first one.
Back on topic, anything made by Paul Verhoeven (Total Recall, Robocop and Starship Troopers) is a winner by me also. His subtle commentary on society in his movies is sensational. "Do you want to know more?"

Bladerunner, pulp fiction and fifth element.
The Fifth Element is class. Chris Tucker steals the spotlight from the movie. All the scenes in which he appears are real funny, the character he plays ‘DJ Ruby Rhod’ is hilarious. Gary Oldman also stars and he never disappoints.
Oldman, in my opinion, is the best actor on the planet. My favourite anyway. He’s got the ability to transform himself into any type of role and he acts with perfection. Most of his movies are great. The roles that he accepts are always somewhat unique choices:
JFK – Lee Harvey Oswald
Bram Stoker's Dracula – Dracula
True Romance - Drexl Spivey (a Rastafarian lol)
Leon - Agent Norman Stansfield (a corrupt cop)
Air Force One - Ivan Korshunov (a Russian terrorist)
Interstate 60 - O.W. Grant (a genie)
He is going to star in the next Harry Potter and the Batman movie. That’ll give him some recognition he deserves.
Some of my fav films eva are:
Lord of the Rings tilogy
BASEketball
Silence of the Lambs
The Shining
Jerry Maguire

Schindler's List and The Pianist are excellent war movies in my opinion. I'm surprised that they're not on your list. Haven't you seen them?

Yeah, I’ve got a list compiled up of my favourite films. It’s saved on my computer. I’m planning on getting all those movies on DVD. I have about half of those thus far.

Premise - The film is adapted from the autobiography of Wladyslaw Szpilman, a Polish Jew who detailed his survival during World War II. A composer and a pianist, he played the last live music heard over Polish radio airwaves before Nazi artillery hit. During the brutal occupation, he eluded deportation and remained in the devastated Warsaw ghetto. There, he struggled to stay alive even when cast away from those he loved. He would eventually reclaim his artistic gifts and confront his fears, with aid from the unlikeliest of sources.
Thanks Mr. Kewell, sounds good.
Another classic i missed off my list: Good Morning Vietnam, with Robin Williams.
I have a lot of favourites. Can't decide on one. I'll just list what I can see in my collection from here, they are all great to me. In no particular order.
