So does anyone think Wenger will bring in any more signings before the window closes? I personally would be happy if he bought in maybe a winger
Dragonfly

It doesn't look like anyone else is coming, but it never does. Someone will probably end up joining, but I haven't got a clue who it could be. A winger would be nice though, but that looks less likely because of the Ljunberg situation, or did he actually ask for his contract to be bought out so he could leave on a free?

http://home.skysports.com/list.aspx?hlid=477659&CPID=103&clid=3&lid=&title=Gunners+move+for+starlet s
Arsenal are understood to have struck deals for South American starlets Angel Di Maria and Pedro Silva.
The news has emerged via Spain, as The Gunners have already agreed a deal with Salamanca to take the two teenagers on loan - in a similar move to the one which saw Mexican Carlos Vela move on a temporary basis last season.
Gilles Grimandi, one of Arsene Wenger's most trusted scouts, cast his eye over both and is understood to have given glowing references.
Di Maria (pictured) is very highly rated in his homeland and is part of the Argentina Under 20 squad which has made the semi-finals at the World Championship in Canada.
'The Little Angel', as he is known, has scored two goals in four games and is one of the stars of the tournament so far.
It is now understood that Arsenal have brokered a deal with his club Rosario Central and the 19-year-old will link up with The Gunners later this month.
However, because he does not meet work-permit criteria - he is ready to spend the season with Salamanca, who are more than happy to take the left winger following Vela's successful stay at the club.
Di Maria will also have company in the shape of Pedro - a 17-year-old forward from Brazil.
Pedro is currently with Figueirense - who Arsenal have had talks with about a co-operation agreement.
Pedro has already made his first-team debut and was first spotted by Arsenal's South American scout Sandro Orlandelli some months ago.
Some reports claim Pedro has already had a trial with The Gunners, and he now seems to have done enough to earn a move to North London - but he is also set to spend the season in Spain.
Salamanca are hopeful of confirming the arrival of both players later this week.
I've heard about the Di Maria story for a while now but I must say I'm pleased its true. From what I've seen of him (and it's more than YouTube compilations!) he looks a talented player. I can't pretend to know much about Pedro however.

I think the club has a say in the shirt colours, not the sponsors.
Home kit = red + white.
Emirates colours = red + white.
The club did however have an all white shirt for two seasons, like over 60/70 (or even 80) years ago.

Stella Artois

Yea, but all Nike do is (on the whole) make a huge template for the basis upon which each kit will be made. Colours to them aren't exactly a factor, are they?
I've heard the Emirates company weren't happy with the ThinkIsrael.com advertising boardings either, despite what they said in public.

Watched the second half of the game using a WMP stream. Eduardo da Silva was lively when he came on late into the game, and showed some good touches. Adebayor and Van Persie linked up quite well on a few occasions. Armand Traore was decent, some exciting runs down the left flank and he's improving defensively.
I hate both the new kits. I'll never support having any type of white kit. I don't care if we had a white kit a few hundred years ago, yellow is our away colour, and it should be kept that way.

Wenger staying or going has sweet FA to do with Kroenke. There's been speculation in the past and he's always gone on to sign a new contract, even without the talk of investment existing.

I doubt much would change to be honest. Yes he would want his money back, but he wouldn't do it in a way where he "bleeds us dry", it's most likely going to be how things currently are; not a huge amount of transfer funds being made available in the long-run (new chairmen tend to splash the cash early to gain favour from the fans[cynical view] or to try to buy trophies, ergo more prize funds so he can pocket some cash back quicker and also slightly increase the transfer fund[less cynical view]), and ticket prices will still be high. There's something else I was thinking of, but it's left me. :erm:

meself n dundons were having a chat bout this earlier- the takeover would, in all likelihood, result in Dein returning and business gets back to normal, which would also increase the chances of A.W. staying.
as for the increased funds, i'm sure there would be some available, but as usual they wouldnt be spent (not in a big way anyway).
also, has anyone noticed that A.W. has not filled the position of director of football (or whatever it was he wanted); is this an indication that he knows whats going on behind the scenes and is just biding his time til Dein resumes his old role?!
whats the story now with the board - are tehy still sticking to this 'no selling our shares for at least a year', or is that now off the table??

Bernie Ecclestone is open-minded about the possibility of a takeover bid for Arsenal.
Following reports claiming American billionaire Stan Kroenke is ready to launch his own attempt to gain control of The Gunners, Ecclestone has also been linked with an offer.
The Formula One supremo has confirmed he has not held talks with the Premier League club regarding any bid.
But Ecclestone conceded that he would be open to an approach from Emirates Stadium, if the deal represented good value.
"I don't know too much about that, actually," Ecclestone told Reuters in response to reports he is lining up a bid for Arsenal.
"It's good if somebody is saying that, because maybe I will be approached and maybe it will be cheap.
"I'll buy anything if it's cheap enough.
"If somebody offers me something that I think is good value, I'll have a go."
Ecclestone also feels the departure of former vice-chairman David Dein, who was keen for Kroenke to be more involved in the club, was 'unnecessary'.
He added: "I talked to David obviously when they chucked him out, which I thought was a bit unnecessary."

I don't understand your logic. You're against the idea of foreigners owning your club but happy to have a team full of foreigners? :huh:My sentiments exactly.
Not only is the current Arsenal team made up of foreigners, but the official name of the home stadium is licensed to a Middle-Eastern Company for the next 14 years!!
I really don't understand why Arsenal supporters are so adverse to foreign ownership. It hasn't exactly done Man Utd or Chelsea any harm.

Chelsea isn't really a good example because Roman hasn't really run it like a real club would run. I very much doubt that if Kroenke took over that he'd invest several hundred million pounds of his own money entering the club. There might be an increase in the transfer budget, but not to that extent. And it's a bit too early to say that it hasn't done Man Utd any harm after just two years. There's plenty of damning articles about that discuss the debt that Glazer's brought on the club and just how problematic it could prove to be for them.

Kroenke doesn't have £600m from his pockets to purchase Arsenal. He will obviously borrow that money. I'm completely sure he would place the debt on the club, possibly further increasing ticket prices to the stadium.
I'd rather wait a few years till our current debts are cleared than have Kroenke taking over. The ONLY benefit Kroenke may bring is transfer money, but seeing as we will soon become of the richest clubs in the world (according to some members of the Arsenal board), there is absolutely no point.
Well....not much point speculating guys. Anyway...money makes the world go around....until it happens I won't worry...and come on...people do invest in GOOD things....not just for money...sometimes for pride...sometimes for fun!
Who knows? If I had the $$$ I would buy Arsenal because I love it...and don't want things to change in philosophy etc.
At the end of the day..I am interested now in how the new team dynamics work etc. Looking forward to the next game...then the Emirates Cup and Ajax thing. All good indications of how the season might go.
Good 3-0 win over some Turkish team no one's ever heard of today. Van Persie scored twice and Theo got the other

Eduardo came on for the last 20 minutes vs Genclerbirligi and looked quite lively, reacting quickly to near post crosses and showed some tricks down the right wing before crossing in.
This kid looks very good; I think he would play very well with Van persie as they would play plenty of one-twos and they are both left footed and can use their weak foots well.

Freddie Questions Gunners
Freddie Ljungberg has questioned Arsenal's ambition after leaving the club for West Ham.
The Swede, who was the club's longest serving player prior to his move to Upton Park, felt the time was right to move on after nine years in North London.
Ljungberg admitted the departure of Thierry Henry played a part in his decision to leave and he also questioned the club's failure to match his own ambitions by bringing in new players.
"Two years ago when I signed my last contract we talked a lot about the future and about bringing great players to the club," said Ljungberg. "Despite building the new stadium we wanted to stay top in England and do well in Europe.
"For me that didn't really happen.
"I stayed because I wanted to stay loyal to Arsenal. But when Henry left this summer it felt like the end for me unfortunately.
"I felt like all the unbeaten players (from Arsenal's 'invincibles' of 2003/04) had left. I wanted to be loyal but I felt like it was the right time.
Despite his doubts over Arsenal's plans for the future, Ljungberg admitted it was a wrench to leave the club.
"I've been there for nine years, almost 10 years," continued Ljungberg.
"It's a big thing for me and I feel it in my heart a little bit.
"When I spoke to the boss, he wanted me to stay.
"But at the same time, I feel it had to be something very, very special for me to leave.
"I want to go forward and, with the people I have around me, I think it's going to be really good."

I think he's trying to put his departure down to our "lack of ambition" just to divert attention from his obvious fall in form and knowing that he won't be getting that many games next season. The comments are a little bitter, but I don't think he's been to out of order there.

Injury prone, 70k+ wages, past it..
Wenger made a good decision in selling him. Hopefully Wenger will now get a good winger to replace him.
Though I'd like to thank Freddie for his contributions to this club, mainly in 2002 where he won the Player of the season award.

I believe he could of still done a job for us if the man stayed fit but he is very injury prone and has put down two bad back to back seasons so I suppose it makes sense.

Hang on: RVP's got an excellant left foot on him: couldn't he play down the left and adebayor and eduardo up front. And then rosicky could play in thre center.
Something like this:
-------------------------Gilberto------------------------
---------Cesc-------------------------RVP--------------
-------------------------Rosicky------------------------
---------Adebayor--------------Eduardo-----------------
Eduardo looks like a great finisher, but until he proves it in the Premiership, van Persie is your best finisher. So you would just be wasting him, by playing him on the left.
He's more comfortable on the right anyway.
RvP played on the left last season in a 4-3-3, he was crap and duly never played there again. end of.
I like Freddie and still do, but he was past it and was costing us far too much money. At least Arsene HAS to buy another winger now (I hope:erm: )

I wouldn't be overly confident of Wenger signing another winger. Hleb and Walcott can both switch over to the left flank if necessary, and it seems highly likely that Eboue will be spending more time on the right wing. I do hope we sign a top quality winger, but won't be pinning my hopes on it.
As for Ljungberg, he's been a great servant for the club, but is well past his sell-by date and offers very little to the club, so it's about time he moved on. It's a shame, however, that he feels the need to be so pathetic and come out with such foolish remarks. Who does he think he's kidding?

I seriously can't see past Toure.
Overall I'm willing to give it another season of blooding in what could be considered nOObs, but I'd like to win something in the meantime if that was at all possible. Bottom line should be our best 11 can play and beat any other side on the day regardless of the competition. Only thing is keeping everyone fit and not relying too much on the younger ones for long periods like last season.
Scarface
24-07-2007, 01:25
I'm quietly confident for next season. This underdog tag may suit the youngsters. As you've said, on our day we can beat any team, and we outplayed almost every team we came up against last season, with our finishing constantly letting us down, so hopefully we'll put that right and show more consistency in front of goal. Not having such a high level of expectation for a change may prove beneficial.
Those 2 young South American players who were said to be joining - Angel Di Maria and De Pedro - will not be. It was another hoax, this time by Arsenal Shorts.
Pedro wasn't a hoax, it was confirmed on Salamanca's website that he was joining them on loan from us, Di Maria was the hoax.

Don't know is it's as simple as that mate, I know where you're coming from going by last year but this is a new season.
Hleb I'm sure will of done some shooting practice
Rosicky is world class and the man just had no luck last year
Theo will be 100 times better I'm confident of that
Eboue will do a job if needs be, he's a nature runner with the ball and if anything will be a good option if we're looking at grinding out a result or keeping a lead.

I think the reason why we finished 4th in league last season was because we weren't settled into our new stadium due to the size of the pitch compared to the small highbury pitch. Also, yeah we conceded some very early goals and lost to the mediocre teams like Sheff Utd and West Ham. We made up for it slightly by having a great record against the other top 3.

Like Dragonfly...people do think there is a lack of depth. Give the young guns a chance too but experience counts in many cases (silly free kicks, stupid fouls, etc etc). I'm with Gunnerblog though...and think maybe some young players like Mark Randall will step up a bit and surprise people.
I'd like that extra backup though, not necessarily BIG players...but good players who can add something to the squad anywhere, but I suspect it may be the wings that Arsene targets.
We'll see...30 odd days to go to the end of the transfer window...not long to the first matches of the league....should be an interesting start to the season and some quality pre-season matches in the Emirates + Amsterdam cups...very yummy! Wish I could watch them all!

I know some of you may shoot me for this, but I have to agree with Wenger here. I personally feel Gallas the ingredients to become a great captain. He doesn't sulk like Henry, he is a winner and is a lot more vocal than Gilberto and Henry.

If Cesc were a couple of years older, I'd have said him without a doubt. However, given he can be a bit immature, I'd go for Gilberto too.

I agree with Wenger when he says a centre back is a better option for captain but I don't like the idea of Gallas he just doesn't seem commited to the club. Maybe Toure but I don't know how his communication skills are on pitch, for now i'd keep Gilberto as captain, everyone looks up to him

Gilberto would be good as he has shown last season, but I don't like the fact his captaincy means he must stay on the pitch - there were times where he was shifted to central defence so the likes of Diaby or Denilson could play, and we had better options on the bench like Senderos.
Gilberto at CB was a disaster.

Considering we've made money on transfers this year and you'd have to go back about 5 years for us to have spent more than we've received, I'd personally say our finances haven't exactly been on a level that compares with our league position year in, year out.
That said I'm not complaining, but its boring when people laugh at us for finishing fourth (United fans usually), when their club is then able to spend £50m + on players, whilst we use revenue we've made to buy players.

This is something I do find annoying, United fans are bad enough, but Chelsea fans taking the piss is something else. A little jovial banter is one thing, but a fair few seem to act superior. When each team plays their best football, Arsenal are certainly the most entertaining.

I'm just going to go through a few of the plus points, I'll stop when I get bored or can't think of anything else.
Clichy: Looked excellent and covered every blade of grass on th pitch TWICE!!!
Eboue: Was excellent getting up and down and proved way more effective going forward then Sagna, but we all knew that already. Think the competition will be good for him, last season he started getting a bit big for his boots and was turning into a bit of a cunt.
Diaby: Showed great feet and won a lot of ball, can't understand what he's doing on the wing but I'm sure the boss knows better.
Denilson: Reminds me of Fab in his first full season after Paddy fucked off, he's world class and will be excellent this year.
Hleb: Took a lot of players on whenever he was given half a chance, he's the best ball carrier in the squad and if the cunt will just lean how to let one fly he'll be one of our best players.
V.Persie: Had a quite game but looks sharp, he has nothing to prove imo.
Flamini: Looks like he'll be filling in the gaps again this season, I always compared him to Phil Neville, every squad needs one.
Bentdner: Maybe the best thing to come out of the whole game, he'll give us options and as scrappy as his goal was it lifted a weight off my shoulders which I have been carrying around for a long time.
