View Full Version : Arsenal
So far Wenger, Cole, Vieira, Edu and Reyes are all leaving in the summer, so it seems we wil have to do a lot of rebuilding ;)
Well... the press were already announcing bergkamps retirement back in 2000, and as far as I can remmeber there has always been talk of Viera leaving the club...
edit: ...so I mean to say the press is full of .... ;)
It's almost like that last friends season... ow no wait... just one more season... ok ONE more.... ok this REALLY is the last one.... Ow ok we're finished...it's all over now... we're done with.... and here's Joey!!!
LOL...I think I read an article comparing Wenger with Ferguson - Wenger has had about half the time to come up with the goods, with a team that was "smaller" than Tottenham eight years ago...not fair definitely to say Wenger's time has come.
Well, let's just get on with the season and beat ManU to second place...that would be a great finish!
Latest news from ESPNSoccernet..
The Gunners have been linked with two potential summer transfer targets.
Arsenal are among a trio of Barclays Premiership sides reportedly eyeing Verona's star youngster Valon Behrami.
The Gunners have also been suggested as potential suitors for Stuttgart midfielder Alexander Hleb.
Hleb's agent, Niki Spilevski, believes Arsenal are keen to take him to London.
'Arsenal have made an enquiry,' says Spilevski. 'He has a top contract but who knows what will happen with regards to Arsenal?'
Hleb, 23, is contracted to Stuttgart until 2008.
Behrami, 19, is regarded as one of the most exciting talents outside of the top-flight in Italy this season and has been linked with a move to Juventus.
Anybody know of this Behrami fella? Another prospect?!?

Valon Behrami plays for Verona, but is co-owned by Genoa, and his contract is up in the summer, so he will be available on a free. Good to see we are after a playmaker.

A trio of Premiership sides are ready to move for Verona's star youngster Valon Behrami in the summer.
Tottenham, Liverpool and Arsenal have all sent scouts to watch the 20-year-old midfielder, who is co-owned by Genoa but playing in Verona.
Behrami has been one of the most exciting talents outside of the top-flight in Italy this season - and has regularly been linked with a move to Turin giants Juventus.
However, skysports.com understands that English clubs are in pole position to snap up the Serie B star.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is believed to have taken a personal interest in the talented play-maker - and it is The Gunners who could well make a concrete bid.
Behrami is out of contract in the summer, so would be a financially attractive proposition - although the player's age may persuade Liverpool and Spurs from bidding.
No. Not another youngster who "could be good". I want someone with proven results.
Hleb - yes.
Ballon - No. I might be whipped when he'll play for the scum and be amazing, but that's it. I don't want another youngster. What's wrong? What about Emre? Recoba? Vincent Kompany? (he's a youngster but he proved his shit).
AND WHAT THE FUCK - why can't we firstly look out for a decent goalie?

Yeah, the Wenger rumour it's ridiculous, but it's silly season in the press so expect more retarded reports like this to come about.
I heard the supposed quote by Essien, but the way it was worded, he may have been asked ''would you like a move to Man Utd?'', just as was the case with Gattuso. Man U do not have the money to buy Essien this summer in any case, they would need to make a lot from sales to even consider bidding for him if their director David Gill is to be believed. Another major plus point about Essien is he can perform fantastically well at centre back aswell, so he would be a superb signing for us.
So far Wenger, Cole, Vieira, Edu and Reyes are all leaving in the summer, so it seems we wil have to do a lot of rebuilding ;)
The latest name to that list seems to be robert pires the mirror reports that wenger will keep hold of vieira but sell pires who i thought has had another decent season if he scored a couple more goals he'd be third in thje premiership goalscoring rankings and yet they all say he's had a poor season

I can't see us selling Pires. His 32 now, so we wouldn't be getting much of a deal for him, and his still a special player, so selling him wouldn't be the wisest decision.
By his standards, his had a poor season, but his managed to score a fair few goals, so his got something to point to with pride.
I think one key player may be sold this summer. Edu and Pennant will leave, and Lehmann aswell most probably, and maybe one from Cole/Reyes/Vieira but I can't see it being anymore than that. There is no reason for a complete exodus of talent. We still have a great future ahead of us, and it will be hard not to improve and get better from now on.

I am not sure if cole will go, but if he does go 2 chelsea (your rivals) it will be a big blow. I can see Vieira there next season (every summer he gets linked to real but nothing ever happens) Maybe reyes will move but i cant see arsenal recouping all of what they paid 4 him. Pires has being okay, he seems 2 score quite a lot of goals 4 a midfielder.

Cole will not go to Chelsea. After all that's happened, there is almost no chance of that happening, unless both Chelsea and Cole have a death wish.
Reyes I believe has cost us £12m so far, and the rest of the money was dependant on goals, appearances and European success, so I think we can easily get all the money we paid for him back if he wants to go in the summer. Personally, I think he will decide to stick around for a bit longer, at least until next January, if not the end of next season, to see if he can start to enjoy life in England.
Pires' goalscoring record for a midfielder is untouchable. During the 49 game unbeaten run, he scored 23 goals! Considering he was on the bench for a few of them games and injured in others, that is quite unbelieveable. This season however he has not been the same, but i'm confident we will start to see the old Pires back soon. Henry, Vieira, Bergkamp and the like get most of the credit for our flowing football, but for me, it's Pires who puts it all together. Tony Adams believe Robert Pires is our most important player, and I think he could be right there.
Morientes19

more important than Henry, Vieira or campbell.
I didnt feel Pires had a bad season at all: He just didnt play as much as he should have cause Reyes was playing from the left midfield a lot of times...
I guess Wenger only looks at someone age, instead of the fitness and impact... He did the same for a bunch of years to Bergkamp, keeping the old guy on the bench so the kids could have a try...
I think the best player should always play, regardless his age.
btw: I'm not a Pires fan, but I certainly rate him higher then Freddie...

Robin reliant bags the 3 points for the Arsenal
Blackburn 0-1 Arsenal
Robin van Persie scored the only goal of the game as Arsenal beat a stubborn Blackburn side 1-0 at Ewood Park.
Arsene Wenger was without the likes of Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry and Robert Pires for the match, and his intended substitute eventually settled the match in their favour.
Van Persie was only included in the starting XI after Freddie Ljungberg twisted an ankle in the warm-up but he proved to be the match-winner with his goal just before half time.
Rovers began brightly with a good early chance flashing across the six yard box, but Arsenal soon got into their stride with some smooth passing moves.
Van Persie had a good chance on ten minutes after Cesc Fabregas chipped a neat ball through, but Brad Friedel came out to get a touch on the ball and snuff out the danger.
Morten Gamst Pederson then tested Jens Lehmann twice in quick succession, as the German had to palm away his dangerous corner, before a powerful header from the Norwegian was plucked out the air by the Gunners keeper.
Dominic Matteo injury woes continued when he had to be replaced three minutes before half time by Nils-Eric Johansson.
Things got even worse for Blackburn just a minute later when van Persie produced a polished finish to put the champions ahead.
Ashley Cole did superbly coming in from his left wing position, and turning sharply before slotting a ball through to van Persie, who produced another drag-back and neat turn, which saw the Dutch striker clear and he skipped around Brad Friedel before slotting home into an empty net.
Wenger's men could have doubled their advantage barely a minute after the interval thanks to a mazy run from Fabregas which saw the diminutive Spaniard dance into the box from nearly his own half.
Fabregas failed to get a shot in, but the ball fell for Jose Antonio Reyes to shoot goalwards and force Fridel into a smart save.
Another superb flowing move from Arsenal almost produced a second goal on 67 minutes with Reyes the architect on the right - supplying van Persie who spun quickly before curling a shot that came off the bar.
Reyes fired in a low shot just a minute later that Friedel had to get down quickly to save, as Arsenal turned the screw.
The Gunners failed to extend their advantage, and Rovers almost drew level eight minutes from the end when substitute Brett Emerton raced clear down the right before firing a shot just wide of Lehmann's far post.
The decision to add five minutes of stoppage time to the end of the match did little to soothe Arsenal's nerves, and Rovers wasted a glorious chance to grab a last minute leveller when Steven Reid fired wide.
That puts us back up to the 2nd, for a few hours at least. Hard fought win today, and a good rehearsal for the FA Cup Semi-Final, which will be the far more important result.

I saw the match and it was a comfortable victory for arsenal maybe they could have scored more but a good victory none the less good warm up for the FA cup tie and the victory helps keep a little bit of pressure on Man utd and maybe chelsea
Comfortable? Ha! Nerve-racking as usual...I think we didn't control it as much as we could have. Gave the ball away a little too easily...and forwards/mid-field never hampered the blackburn defense much....no pressure on the opponents. But every time we got the ball, there was a Blackburn player almost on top!
Anyway, credit to VP...he did the job and didn't sulk! Good stuff...he's learning!

Yep, fair dues, van Persie paid us back with a van-tastic goal yesterday, and with a little bit of persie-verance he could be a top player for us.
I can see the semi-final being a similar story, with Blackburn pressuring us whenever we get the ball, but we seem to be coping and adapting better to the same old crap we have thrown at us. Fingers crossed, Arsenal will be victorious in the Semi-Final aswell.
Good goal by Parsley. I'm sorry, but I can't help it, I just don't like the kid. Too many missed chances when we needed someone who can concentrate. I saw a similar quality with Zlatan playing v. Real Madrid. A lot of effort, a lot of work, good skill and technique, but not that coolness in front of goal that others posses. Like the French Duo, for instance (Henry and Trez).
I want some good shopping in the summer. That's what I want.
Maybe this will help Golan...some more rumours!! From Skysports
Meanwhile, Wenger has been linked with two players on the continent as he assesses potential reinforcements for next season.
With doubts persisting about the effectiveness of Manuel Almunia and Jens Lehmann, Lille goalkeeper Tony Sylva has been put forward as a possible signing.
AZ Alkmaar defender Jan Kromkamp has also been mooted as a target to provide competition for Lauren at right back.
Arsenal are monitoring Nigerian starlet Oluwasegun Abiodun who plays in Norway for Ham-Kam.
The powerful 20-year-old striker is hot property in Scandinavia and has already been the subject of unsuccessful bids from Ham-Kam's Norwegian rivals Rosenborg and Valerenga since joining last summer.
Abiodun originally sprung to prominence as Nigeria won the African Under-17 Championship in 2001, before helping them to the final of the World Under-17 Championship against France later that year.
His displays in those tournaments won him a move to Israeli outfit Maccabi Haifa where he linked up with compatriot, and current Portsmouth star, Yakubu Aiyegbeni.
Abiodun played in the UEFA Champions League during his time at Maccabi, but endured problems after the departure of Yakubu to English football and opted to move to UAE outfit Al Wahda.
After a short spell in the Middle East he returned to Europe with Ham-Kam where he has caught the eye of a number of European teams with his displays.
The player's agent Tom Poldner insists that Arsenal, Anderlecht and Feyenoord have all watched the youngster in action, but is not looking to secure a move in the near future.
Poldner is adamant that the African should remain in Norway for the current season at least before considering a move to one of Europe's bigger leagues.
"I have told Abiodun to just think about Ham-Kam as long as he is in Norway," he told Hamar Arbeiderblad.
"It is there he will get the best support and development. Anderlecht and Feyenoord are very interested.
"Arsenal have also studied him, but I feel it's best that he play out this season at Ham-Kam.
"If he does play well, he can be sold at the end of the season."

Doesnt bother me if he goes through 100 more, as long as players like Fabregas, Flamini, Senderos, Clichy, Toure, Aliaidere, Quincy, keep coming through.
Wenger is the master at scouting young players, something Arsenal have advantage over United and Chelsea who seem to scout plyers by reading the newspapers.
Crikey...how many times do peopel want to report this is the press...still so many SENSATIONAL headlines that don't relate to the content that well...bah...
Reyes speaks of Real Madrid desire
MADRID, March 23 (Reuters) - Arsenal forward Jose Antonio Reyes has again stated that he would not rule out a possible future move to Real Madrid.
'It's clear that any player in the world would like to play for Real Madrid,' the Spanish international told a news conference at the national team's training base in Las Rozas. 'It's a very big club and you should never close any doors.'
The 21-year-old, who joined Arsenal from Sevilla for an initial fee of £10.5million in January 2004, has been linked with a move to Real after reports surfaced about him struggling to adapt to life in England.
'The more people talk about this the worse it is going to be,' he said.
Although when pressed on the matter he added: 'First the two clubs would have to reach a deal and then they would have to agree a price. But that is nothing to do with me.
'All I am thinking about is playing and I've got a representative who deals with that sort of thing.'
Last month Real Madrid denied that they were planning an exchange deal for Reyes that would involve England striker Michael Owen moving to Arsenal.

REYES PLEAS FOR MADRID MOVE
Arsenal striker Jose Antonio Reyes has admitted he hopes Real Madrid make an approach for him so he can end his "unhappy" spell in England.
The 21-year-old former Seville forward told Spanish newspaper Marca he has struggled to adapt to life in London and revealed that he would "love" to complete a move to the Bernabeu.
"It is obvious that when Real Madrid want a player, they get him. I hope now they are making an effort to get me, that they are watching me and speaking to my club and that Arsenal don't give them many problems," said Reyes.
"It is obvious that I am not happy and that I have not adapted. I have told Arsenal that I am unhappy and that I have not adapted to the language or the climate and I think that is vital for me.
"I have spoken to the Arsenal chairman and the coach (Arsene Wenger) and I have told them everything."
Reyes - who moved to Highbury in January 2004 - also heaped praise on Spanish giants Real Madrid.
Wanderley Luxemburgo's men are on the verge of going through a second consecutive season without a major trophy despite boasting the attacking talents of Ronaldo, Raul and Michael Owen.
"They have the best players in the world, you have to tell it as it is. Everyone would want to play for Real Madrid," Reyes added.
"I am pleased that the Madrid supporters, at least, would also like to see Reyes wearing their famous white shirt.
"I think that it is important and an honour that the fans like me. If things work out, it would give me extra motivation.
"I would love to play for Real Madrid, but at the moment I am with another club and they have to come to an agreement.
"If Real Madrid are interested, they have to speak to Arsenal, if they do that, I am certain they will come to an agreement."

we have the cash this summer its just a question of where does Wenger want to spendand with the possibility of Bergkamp not coming back I think that up front is place that needs to be strengthed espcially if we lose Reyes. No idea why anyone is commenting on reports from Marca, the newspaper is full of bollocks.
This is the paper that said that Vieira had signed for Real Madrid, along with Henry back in 2003.
The paper is full of bollocks, read the article again, and just take all the quotes by Reyes, ignore all the bollocks outside of it.
Prime example here:
Arsenal striker Jose Antonio Reyes has admitted he hopes Real Madrid make an approach for him so he can end his "unhappy" spell in England.
Find me one quote where Reyes has ever admitted he wants Real Madrid to buy him. You'll be hard pressed, because he has said no such thing.
He has agreed to a prank phone call that he would like to sign for Real Madrid, yes. But he has not admitted that he wants Real to make a bid for him.
Its just a serious twist of words, come on guys, you should know better by now ;)
However, if Wenger does sell Reyes, it wont bother me as long as we get our money back for him. Besides, could pick up Owen in a part deal. Rather Owen than Beckham, as Arsenal are not suited to crosses, although his long balls behind the defence for Henry could be useful, but besides that, he is getting too old.

I'm not interested in either, although I'd prefer Beckham over Owen. Owen isnt all that good (anymore). We have good strikers already...
Owen instead of Reyes would be a bad trade...
I'm not really interested in ANY of theReal Madrid squad, actually...
I'm not sure if Arsenal could use a 'prima donna' in their squad.
As I said, we only need a few good new center backs which shouldnt be to hard (that bayern defender has shown interest), Chiwu might be interested, and there are other names around who are linked witha possible arsenal move.
And we need a good goalkeeper.
Plus possibly a new good central midfielder. The rest is just 'extra'

Yeah, but to be fair, and having seen the foul/bust-up, there really wasnt all that much going on. Should have been a yellow, nothing more. But yeah Van Persie is kinda beginning to build a bad reputation with all these shite sending-offs... which is very sad since he's a player that really doesnt need to do it...
(for those who didnt see it: van Persie wanted to get the ball of an opposing player to take the free kick quickly, guy was holding it in his hands, led to a lil bust-up)
Bah..too bad...

So, Robert Green could join Arsenal in the summer. The rumours have been going on for a while now, so what do you Arsenal fans think of it? From a Norwich point of view, I wouldn't be too sad if he goes, Ward and Gallacher are good back ups and get a few million to spend elsewhere, probably the defence.

I'm not a big fan of Green, so hope he doesn't join us,. There have been loads of rumours about that Carlos Kameni will sign in the summer, who is a better keeper in my opinion, but i'd still much rather Frey or Hildebrand.
Talking of Norwich, Nigel Worthington is desperate to keep David Bentley on-loan next season, but I can't see that happpening, I think he will have quite a few games in an Arsenal shirt next season, especially if Reyes heads back off to Spain.
Kameni is a great shot stopper, probably better than Green, but Kameni makes much more errors. And I doubt Bentley will stay next season, because Wenger has told him he has a future at Arsenal. But Arsenal were linked with Green earlier in the season, and a rumoured makeweight was Bentley for another two years or something like that.
Mmm...still strange that Stuart Taylor still not given a chance...even Almunia has had a spell. Given Lehmann's inability to punch clear etc...come on GOD (Mr. Wenger)...ha!

I wouldn't mind seeing Frey join he is rumored to be leaving Parma this summer and Wenger has always liked Frey. I'm not a huge fan of Green hope we don't get him to be honest.
Bentley will prob go back to Norwich on loan that will help him for the future.
But will Wenger want him playing in the Championship? Because I'm afraid that is where we'll be next season. And what is so bad about Green? Does anyone rate him?
Oh dear, oh dear!
You can't sell out tickets to the FA Cup semi-final! Tickets are now on General sale (http://www.arsenal.com/article.asp?article=263708)
Come on you non-attendees! Now's your chance! (international fans excluded obviously!)

ARSENAL will offer Gilberto Silva a new contract this summer - but David Bentley has warned he is not afraid to quit Highbury.
Gilberto made his comeback in the 4-1 win over Norwich last Saturday after being ruled out since mid-September with a back injury.
He has 12 months remaining on his current deal but Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is keen to secure a three-year extension for the 28-year-old.
Wenger said: "We will try to extend Gilberto's contract.
"He has a great presence in midfield and you could see that against Norwich. He certainly knows the job.
"We want him to stay and we want him to be part of our future. We will sort that out in the summer.
"He has recovered completely from his back injury and that will not be a problem for him now."
While Gilberto's future seems assured, homegrown ace Bentley admits he will turn his back on the club if he is not given a chance.
The 20-year-old, currently on a season-long loan with Norwich, warned: "I don't want to be playing reserve team football anymore and I won't be playing for the reserves next year.
"I love the club and the fans, I grew up watching Arsenal.
"But at the end of the day if I'm not going to be given a chance for whatever reason then I'll have to go somewhere else, and I'm not fazed by that.
"I'll speak to Arsenal and see what they have got to say, but maybe my future lies somewhere else.
"At Arsenal no one is guaranteed to play every week, but I just want to be given a chance to play every week.
"If I'm not being successful on the pitch and the manager doesn't pick me then fair enough. I'll be the first one to hold my hands up. "
I can see Gilberto Silva being another Donato or Mauro Silva type player, and staying at Arsenal until his in his late 30's.
I'm sure Wenger is a big fan of DB Jnr, and he will get a chance in an Arsenal shirt soon enough.
Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger has stated that he never believed Spanish international winger José Antonio Reyes ever wanted to leave Highbury, despite heavy speculation that the winger was unhappy in London.
Wenger said: "When I asked him what he had said it was always far different from what it said in the newspapers.
"If he says 'I'm flattered by the interest but I'm happy at Arsenal' and you cut off the second part of the sentence, you'll get what you want."
Wenger believes Reyes' words were simply translated badly.
"There was never a statement made in England to an English journalist," he said.
"It was always a statement made to a Spanish journalist and translated by a guy who sent it to England.
"That is why I never gave it much importance."
Spanish winger José Antonio Reyes has indicated that he is happy to remain at Arsenal. The Spain international has been the subject of intense speculation since the turn of the year after twice claiming he wanted to join Real.
"Joining Arsenal was the best decision I've ever made," affirmed Reyes.
"There's been a lot of talk that I want to join Real Madrid this summer but the truth is that I'm happy at Arsenal.
"I still expect to achieve more success and win many more titles here.
"But nobody must forget that Spain is my country and Real Madrid are the best team there.
"So, if they want me, it's understandable I'd think about it seriously.
"But my future lies here. It's a matter for Arsenal to decide and they'll have to speak to me and Real Madrid if there's genuine interest."
I would say the same to you I am sure were you in the FA Cup Semi, but alas your £200 million is allowing you to only challenge for 3 trophies still (one of which you've won).quit your moaning

Another good win. Since Senderos had been at centre back, I believe we have 6 clean sheets out of a possible 7. 6 consecutive wins in the Premiership now, let's hope we can get on a roll and have a good end to the season. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink missed two great chances to level for Boro, shame, couldn't have happened to a nicer person. He'll have a sleepless night :)

Reyes/Edu/Ljungberg return
Arsenal have been given a timely lift ahead of their FA Cup semi-final against Blackburn in Cardiff on Saturday.
Both Jose Reyes and Freddie Ljungberg look certain to be fit for the match after starting the week as injury doubts.
Striker Reyes went off at half-time during the 1-0 win at Middlesbrough four days ago suffering from a dead leg. But he was able to resume training yesterday and will be ready for Cardiff.
Ljungberg missed the game last weekend after picking up a hip injury but he was due to train today and, like Reyes, is likely to be fit to face Blackburn.
With Dennis Bergkamp proving his fitness at Middlesbrough after a calf problem, and Sol Campbell now recovered from an ankle injury that has kept him out of first team action since the start of February, manager Arsene Wenger will have close to a full squad from which to select.
The main notable absentee is French defender Gael Clichy, who is out for the rest of the season with a broken bone in his foot
http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/sport/football/articles/17891436?source=Evening
Arsene Wenger will make a late decision on whether to recall Sol Campbell for Arsenal's FA Cup semi-final with Blackburn Rovers.
Campbell has missed the past two months of the campaign due to an ankle injury but is closing on a first-team return.
The centre half has played twice for the reserves since returning to training and is in contention for a spot against Rovers on Saturday.
But Gunners boss Wenger is toying with the idea of sticking with the partnership of Kolo Toure and Philippe Senderos at the heart of the defence.
Wenger feels the duo have played solidly of late and concedes that Campbell is not yet 100 percent fit to figure at The Millennium Stadium.
"I have not decided yet," Wenger told the club's official website about Campbell's possible participation in the semi-final.
"I will see. You can't say Sol is 100 percent but the second [reserve] game was much better than the first.
"There is still time. I must think carefully because he is not completely fit yet and we have defended very well recently."
Wenger, though, will be boosted by the return of Freddie Ljungberg, who missed last week's win over Middlesbrough due to a hip injury.
Jose Antonio Reyes is also fit, along with Edu, but Mathieu Flamini, Manuel Almunia and Gael Clichy will be missing for the tie with Blackburn.
Fingers crossed he'l make his return. I have a feeling he will do. It will be good to see how successful the Campbell and Senderos partnership can be for the remainder of the season.
Ljungberg seeks new deal
Fredrik Ljungberg has revealed talks over his contract extension are ongoing and hopes he can remain at Arsenal beyond 2006.
The Sweden international star still has over a year to run on his present deal, however The Gunners are keen to secure his services for the long-term.
Ljungberg, who arrived from Halmstad in September 1998, is happy in London and is keen to commit to the Highbury outfit.
"We're talking, and hopefully I'll sign a new contract. That's my goal anyway and obviously I think the club's as well, so we'll see," he said to Sky Sports News.
"I want to stay. I've been in London for such a long time.
"I've always said that if the club want to develop like I want to as well, then I want to sign and want to stay."
Despite this season's failure in the UEFA Champions League, Ljungberg believes the squad are as determined as ever to succeed in Europe's premier club competition.
"If we bring in some new players in the summer we're definitely going to try to do better in the Champions League and stuff," he added.
"I think there are a lot of players here that really want to win."
http://skysports.planetfootball.com/Article.asp?id=269995
I hope Freddie gets a new contract, he deserves one. His goalscoring record for a midfielder is fantastic. He may not be as talented as Reyes or Pires on the wings, but the effort he puts in can never be criticised, and the number of important goals he gets for us is astonishing.
Hughes' admiration
Mark Hughes smiles at the thought of Blackburn enjoying the sort of troubles currently enveloping Highbury. "I hear Arsenal are in crisis," said Blackburn's manager as he contemplated Saturday's FA Cup clash in Cardiff. "Second in the league and in the semi-final of the FA Cup! But that is the height of the bar they have set themselves.
"They have great players like Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira and they have fantastic talent around them.
They have won things as a team and now they expect to win games rather than hope to win them."
Hughes, a combative striker who won the FA Cup four times as a player, is not the sort of man to enter a match in hope rather than expectation.
But he faces a tough task if his side are to derail Arsenal and their manager Arsene Wenger, who is bidding for his fourth FA Cup triumph.
"I admire the manager," said Hughes, who this season took Eddie Niedzwiecki from Highbury, where he was reserveteam coach, to Ewood Park as first-team coach. "Eddie talks in glowing terms about 'The Arsenal'. They do things the right and correct way. There is a way to be as a club and that is how you treat people, how you go about your business and have a bit of class when you need to have it.
"Arsenal have certainly got that. A lot of that stems from the manager you have in place."
Contrast that to Hughes's feelings for one of his old haunts, Chelsea, where he made 123 appearances as a striker scoring 39 goals.
In February Jose Mourinho's side beat Blackburn 1-0 in a controversial match at Ewood Park when goalscorer Arjen Robben broke his foot following a challenge by Aaron Mokoena.
Then at the final whistle, Hughes was furious when Mourinho ignored the traditional handshake with the opposition manager and danced in front of the travelling fans as if the title had been won.
Both sides were later fined by the Football Association for failing to control their players during the badtempered clash. Chelsea's antics did not go down well with Hughes, who was also annoyed by accusations his side were a team of spoilers.
That slur has stuck. The latest addition to the queue of detractors is Sir Alex Ferguson following Blackburn's gutsy goalless draw at Manchester United this month.
"People's perception of us changed because of the Chelsea game," said Hughes. "Views were shaped after that - wrongly, I feel. So much emphasis was put on the Robben injury which was just a mistimed tackle. You see them time and again. Chelsea have been involved in games when they happened.
"This is only my view and people at Chelsea may say it is completely the wrong view but I just felt we played very well in that game.
"We have Pro-Zone stats from every game and apart from the one that counts at the top of the page - the score - we beat them in every aspect. And we missed a penalty. Bear in mind they had beaten us very comprehensively at Stamford Bridge 4-0, I just felt maybe they thought they were going to get criticism for the way they performed against us.
"It was a little bit smoke and mirrors. I may be wrong and I may be out of order but that was my take on it."
Hughes won't worry too much about his team's image if they beat Arsenal. Any manager who picks the abrasive Robbie Savage must have a thick skin.
Providing Savage has recovered from a groin injury he will play in midfield on Saturday but it is another area of the team that concerns the manager.
"Goals have been the problem," said Hughes. "We will always create chances but we haven't taken them. We have lost Matt Jansen and Jay Bothroyd this season and Jon Stead is having a difficult time. We have had to patch Paul Dickov up for the last three months and just send him out." Blackburn trail Arsenal by 34 points in the Premiership but Hughes believes his men can overcome the odds at the Millennium Stadium.
"It is a one-off and it is in a competition that has been kind to me over the years," he said. "Most people think of it as a distraction but we feel it has helped us. Underdogs? Yes, we are. But this is the FA Cup and it is based on upsets and it is the kind of game that gets the juices going."
Hughes knows class when he sees it :)
Alexander Hleb speculation
VFB Stuttgart have insisted that they will try to keep talented midfielder Alexander Hleb at the Gottlieb-Daimler Stadium.
The Belarus international has attracted interest from The Premiership with Arsenal keen to take him to England.
Arsene Wenger has been following the playmaker for more than two years and failed in a bid for his signature last summer.
23-year-old Hleb - who recently extended his contract with Stuttgart until 2008 - has been capped 10 times at international level by Belarus.
Hleb's advisor Uli Ferber claimed that Arsenal scouts were watching the youngster during Stuttgart's 3-0 defeat of Schalke last weekend.
It has been suggested that Hleb has a clause in his contract which would allow him to leave the Swabians in the summer for a guaranteed transfer sum, news which is bound to alert interested clubs.
"We don't even think about letting him go," said Stuttgart's director of sport Herbert Briem, who expressed that Stuttgart coach Matthias Sammer sees the Belarusian as a key player in his plans to build for the future.

The French star has picked up a groin injury in training and will not travel with the rest of the squad for Saturday's game at The Millennium Stadium.
"Henry is out with a groin problem," confirmed Arsenal chief Arsene Wenger.
"It is an inflammation of his groin. We have to check that by scan to find out how long he will be out. He could be out for a few weeks, he could be out for a few days. It could be quite serious.
"It is a big blow. We wanted Thierry with us but on the other hand we have to focus on the strengths we have and make sure we have enough to go through."
Wenger also revealed that Sol Campbell will not be risked in Cardiff.
"Campbell practices and is close to full, full competitive fitness, but he is not involved." said Wenger.
"I feel Sol is ready to play but needs a bit more physical work from next week he will be ready.
"Apart from that we have Mathieu Flamini who is out and that is it apart from the long-term injuries like Gael Clichy."
I stil think arsenal will go through to the final and win the FA cup but its a big blow for arsenal nonetheless and rather worrying is that speculation that he may not be back for the chelsea game :(

That's very bad news. We are in for one hell of a battle tomorrow, and i'm not taking anything for granted, I think it's going to be very tough. Without Henry, that's going to make it twice as hard. However, Pires and Ljungberg are in good goalscoring form, and with Bergkamp and Reyes up-front we shouldn't be lacking any attacking threat, so fingers crossed we'll have enough to beat them, and avoid some injuries.

you say avoid injuries but blackbrun are vvery fond of resorting to bully boy tactics in matches, top of the most fouled league, did you hear how much mourinho complained about it after chelsea played blackburn ?
Do you have any hopes of arsenal winnning the league again ? as i still have a small glimmer of hop especially if arsenal can beat chelsea and teams like man utd, newcastle and bolton( :( ) can do arsenal some favours

That's exactly what I mean. They are a very physical side, so we have to make sure we are ready for a battle tomorrow, but hopefully we'll avoid any long-term injuries to players that may result in them missing key games later in the season.
As for the league, we have no chance realistically. If the Man Utd v Chelsea game wasn't re-arranged, i'd say there was still a slim chance, as I could see them possibly losing 2 on the trot to Arsenal and Man Utd, which would leave us 5 points adrift, with them facing a couple of other tricky fixtures, but with how the fixtures have worked out now, we have virtually no chance realistically. Chelsea are getting a full 7 days rest, while we have 3, so it will be tough beating them now, but Blackburn is the most important game, so we just need to focus on winning that and just see what we can do in the league.

I think it's a scandal, Fabregas not being nominated. Obviously i'm biased, but I think he should have won it, let alone be nominated. I can't think of an Arsenal player this year who has performed better than Cesc, and while we may have had a disappointing campaign, we are still ahead of Man Utd, who managed to have 2 players nominated. Ronaldo has been inconsistent, as has Downing, while Fabregas has been superb for the majority of games. For a 17 year old his talent is unbelieveable, and it won't take a personal award to show that to people, but he was certainly deserving of one in any case.
Prediction: 2-1 to Arsenal after extra-time. I think Reyes will take Henry's place.

whats your thoughts on comments made by jermaie pennant ?
Pennant revealed he had held talks with Arsenal to discuss his future and admitted his lack of first team chances at Highbury made up his mind to move on.
"We discussed my whole future, the time I've been at club I got some things off my chest and it was a good meeting," Pennant told Sky Sports News.
"I'm going to be here till the summer then see what happens.
"I've heard Birmingham and Arsenal have agreed a fee.
"I'm here to do a job and I spoke to Arsenal had a good talk; I felt I did my best at Arsenal and if it didn't happen then I've got to look elsewhere.
"If you're going to take a young kid away from his hometown at a young age, he's got ability then stop him playing his football and give him limited Premiership football he's going to get frustrated and he might start to go off the rails if you're not careful and if you don't tell him you will get your chance or anything like that.
"If you're not playing and all you want to do is play football it's very difficult to deal with."

Jermaine Pennant is a twat. He blames Arsenal, yet we gave him more than enough chances, but he was a liability. If he really believes it was Wenger who wrecked his Arsenal career, then he is an even bigger knob than I first thought. I'd like to say I wish him the best, as I rate him as a right-winger, and had hoped for a few years he would be a success at Arsenal, but he is un-professional and hasn't changed at all, even after Wenger offered him lifelines on more than one occasion.
Well whaddya know... RVP with an amazing brace. Too bad he caught Todd's elbow in the last minute. Damn Blackburn play rough. Should've seen a red one in that match. But all in all, like Wenger said, any other year, any other league, 70 points and this year's performance were very good. Too bad Chelsea were that solid. We showed today that without Henry and Sol we can still deliver.

Agreed.
Good to see RVP show what he can do with the ball at his feet, as opposed to how well he can walk down the tunnel after a red. But i'm really happy with Senderos' performances recently. Campbells' return will be great, but in his absence young Phillipe has done very nicely, i.e. plenty of clean sheets.
For all Chelsea's strengths, they've been more than a little lucky this season. Bayern should have put them out of the CL, and they were more than a little lucky to get a point at Highbury a few months back, so i think, injuries permitting, we have a good chance against them this coming week.
That'd be a great message to send out to those smug bastards, not to mention those Manc bastards for our clash in the FA cup final. Revenge will be ours! I hope.

Yeah, Phillipe Senderos has been a complete revelation recently. His starting to show why he is often hyped up as one of the best young central defenders in Europe. We don't even look like we need Sol Campbell back, so rather than rush him back into the team when his not fully fit, I hope we wait for the right moment to bring him back into the team. Then, i'd like to see us play Senderos alongside Sol, with Toure at right back instead of Lauren.
Since Gilberto Silva's return, Patrick Vieira's performances have been magnificent. His starting to get back to his sublime best, which is great news. I feel for Fabregas, as he has been fantastic this season, but it's obvious that Vieira prefers experience alongside him. It is re-assuring that we have 2 phenomenal talents in Fabregas and Flamini ready to step into the team when we need them, and both have great futures ahead of them.
I've long been a fan of Robin van Persie, and was confident he would show his talent for Arsenal this season. While he has been quite inconsistent this season, he has shown some brilliance at times, and his partnership with Henry looks far more promising than Reyes'. I think RVP could be a real success at Arsenal. He has much more talent than most give him credit for, and i'm hopeful that under Wenger we could see him turn into a real star.

Yeah having Gilberto back is great. I always gave the guy a hard time, but having seen us in his absence, not to mention watching what Makelele has done at Chelsea this season, it's really made me realise how amazing he is.
Reyes didn't have a great game, but big deal, thanks to others he didn't need to give one. He's got a massive future too, so i'm happy to sit back and wait. Also i don't think that Bergkamp will get his contract extension, due to him keeping out players like RVp, Reyes and Aliadiere. In a way I hope i'm wrong what with him being so good and all, but i do want to see more of the young guns.
Trezeguet targets Gunners move
Juventus striker David Trezeguet wants to team up with fellow French forward Thierry Henry at Arsenal.
The 27-year-old Trezeguet and his France team-mate Henry have discussed the possibility of playing their club football together.
Trezeguet admits he relishes the prospect and is convinced he will get his wish.
'It would be nice for me to play in England,' Trezeguet told The Sun. 'Why not? I have a perfect understanding with Henry.
'Sometimes when we talk, we would love to play together in club football. I'm sure it will happen one day.'
Yeah...Gilberto makes things solid and well done Senderos..might lack pace...but hey...he's getting better.
Wow...Trezeguet??!

Trezeguet is not the player he was 2 years ago. Re-uniting him with Henry at club level could possibly resurrect his career, but i'm not sure Wenger would be interested in him. I can't see him joining Arsenal anytime soon.
Pardon me but that's the striker we need. I mean, we have great passers, great dribblers, the best wing work in the world, but not a single surgical finisher. With Dennis being tired, and Henry not your classical finsiher, but more of a creative striker, plus the fact that him and Trezeguet already know each other and won't have all the problems adjusting, it's a perfect match.
I think we need a new striker to play along side Henry, i think Trezeguet would be a decent aquisiton.
Reyes- Hasnt cut it.
Bergkamp- Too old now.

'People' have been saying Bergkamp is too old for over 5 years now... and yet the last few years he has kept playing his best football, being extremely important for Arsenal, and is still very fit today. He's also extremely important in the side, always creating lots of chances (there's a big difference in Arsenal's performance depending on if he plays or not), and is also a kind of leader-figure within the group.
I say, as long as he's still as fit and good as the other players, keep him! Even a 35 year old Bergkamp is better then 99% of the players playing in the PL today...
This is also a guy who has taken extremely good care of his body over all these years, never rushing back from injury, let alone smoking and/or drinking... so I doubt his body is already wasted... :)
It would be a shame if he'd be forced to quit the game, as he's still so incredibly good, and still seems to deal with top-level football very very well...
Obviously, (and we have had this argument before) you don't watch enough Arsenal matches, or that your admiration to the menace had drove you mad. The only thing I'll agree to is that there is a whole lot to admire, but now let's get down to the facts:
1. He'll be 36 in a few months.
2. For god sakes he's a striker, not a defender. This means there are a few things that are lost with age. Like accelaration, stamina, general health and constitution. You could see, and not for the first time, that he's holding his side around 60th minute or so. You don't see Henry doing that, now, do you?
3. Probably the smartest footballer around. I'll give him that. Best vision, best understanding. That's a lot - for a great manager. You can clearly see that in the first 45 you have one Dennis, and in the 2nd half - a shadow of that player. He can't trap simple balls that McNugget from divison D traps easy enough. Plus when he's tired, his passes seem to go nowhere.
Anyhow, I know that you think he's the next best thing after Cruyff. Well he was. 4 years ago, maybe. But that's not really my point. My point is your exaggerations. Wild wild ones, too. I wouldn't go through the trouble if you were like "Yeah, I think he should still play" but saying something like "he's better than 99% of the EPL players" is utter bullocks. I like your posts, don't be one of those who, in order to prove their point, need to stress it beyond reasonablity. It weakens it.

Gollan, buy a clue mate. You sayin dennis weren't superb last season or the season before that or the first half of this season for that matter? Four years ago was when dennis wasn't on form, he didnt hit form untill the end of our last double winnin season and since then he's been as good as he was before his off seasons (99/00,00/01). Alright he tires after 60 mins but that should be wengers que to take him off and bring some1 sharper on, of course he's going to be tired because like you said he's 36. We owe it to him to give him another year, and have one more push with him and the likes of pires and to a certain extent Sol who may not cut it in another few years time for the treble that wenger deserves.
on another note. Why can't Arsenal play like they did yesterday night in europe? we did exactly what we should be doing against the likes of munich. We were patient we were solid and we seemed up for it. And i think all the people who slag of Gilberto(which i hold my hands up to doing) have had there eyes opened to the fact that he plays a big role in the starting XI.
I think that's about it and oh yeah up the cottagers on Saturday!
Yeah I agree, Wenger's got something annoying in him being late for subbing players.
Also agree on the form last night vs. our form in Europe. All in all, no one can convince me that Chelsea are a better football team. They were more motivated and were luckier throughout the season, no disrespect to them winning the EPL. Oh and Gilbo is class. I think that finally Arsenal can start playing in 2 methods. Our problem was that we were too wingy. Pires, Freddie, Reyes. Even Henry, not your classic center forward. Now all of the sudden - Pat, Gilbo AND Cesc - that's a midfield, mind you.
it just gives out the sad table. If it was on purpose, than you did it in a very cool manner. If not, re-post the link.

The Frenchman is still refusing to openly throw in the towel in the title chase even though Chelsea can clinch their first championship for 50 years at Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.
With the harsh winter weather affecting pitches in England, Wenger believes his team's passing style has been crucially affected this season.
"In November to January, I feel that you cannot play with the same quality of passing as you can in March or April as the grass and pitches are not as good," he opined.
"You need perfect pitches to play how we did against Spurs. Otherwise, you lose a fraction of a second and the opponents can recover in time."
The Gunners showed flashes of the brilliance that carried them through the entire 2003/2004 campaign unbeaten when defeating neighbours Tottenham 1-0 on Monday night.
However, there will surely be few complaints when Chelsea deservedly lift the title after a remarkable first season under Jose Mourinho.
The Blues have lost only once in the league, at Manchester City, and sit 11 points clear of Wenger's men at the top of the table.
I hated it when I read it. This is the sort of things I don't want the manager of the team I support to say. FFS you're Wenger, not Ferguson.

If all the other crap written by the reporter with it is dismissed, I see nothing wrong with what Wenger has said. Unless he has missed out a vital quote, I do not see him saying ''this is the reason we lost the title''. The imbecile reporter is trying to make Wenger look like a sore loser, using poor excuses for not retaining the title, yet just days before he praised Chelsea and admitted they deserve to be Champions.
''However, there will surely be few complaints when Chelsea deservedly lift the title after a remarkable first season under Jose Mourinho''
Well obviously not, since he has already proclaimed Chelsea as deserving Champions! :realmad:
Media. Burn all of them. I bet an alien from out of space looking at us would say that media, trying to sell, causes more than 50% of the problems on this planet. On the other hand, it probably helps solve a lot of them too.

Closer to a hundred percent i think. Those bastards.
It would be cool to burn them all, we could use copies of the drivel they publish to really get the falmes going, throw the wankers on and then grab some marshmallows and tell ghost stories round the fire long into the night.

Just the tabloid press, broadsheet press are good writers who don't waste their time and rob and deceive their readership with products of their imagination.
^^^
Yeah. But on the other hand, the effect tabloids have on the course of things is minor compared to the broadsheet press. It's a paradox, really, to expect an objective report from a human being. There's always more than one truth, more than one story, and the way the media chooses to describe a situation usually determines the way things are going to go. It's like a "Back to the Future" idea - a journalist covering an article could very much influence the course of later events, and sometimes the way people perceive past events as well. On the other hand, like one of the greatest of the 20th century said, "Sunlight is the best Antiseptic" (L. Brandeis), so many things, being out in the open, are being taken care of.

Out in the open is one thing, but it rarely happens without a certain slant or persuasion attached to it.
Ignoring my earlier post, I do agree with LiamK that it is largely the tabloid press that contributes to our problems, but I think it's short sighted to say that broadsheets are a completely different race.
As you say Gollan:
There's always more than one truth, more than one story, and the way the media chooses to describe a situation usually determines the way things are going to go
A paper such as the Telegraph may paint a very different picture of a story to that of the Guardian or Independent, so grouping all the broadsheets together as a 'force of good' is a little silly.
For me though the most annoying figures are those like Max Clifford, Piers Morgan and publications like Heat magazine. If we could do away with them, then life would be much better.

West Brom 0-2 Arsenal
Scorers: Van Persie, Edu
That's an 11th clean sheet out of a possible 12  Our defence has improved to such an extent i'm not sure where it needs improving over the summer. Kolo Toure is now back in great form, and Senderos looks immense. We are know seeing why so many top European clubs were after him. Ashley Cole and Lauren are solid at full back, and Sol Campbell cannot even get back in the team. Even Jens Lehmann has now cut out the mistakes (*touch wood*) and is in excellent form. :D
It's obvious now just how important G.Silva is to us, the invisible man makes all the difference
Possible areas of improvement over the summer?
For me, it would be a new keeper, ideally Hildebrand or Frey. Although Lehmann is in good form for us currently, we cannot have the worry over him making mistakes in key games next season.
A goalscorer to take the burden off Thierry Henry. Van Persie and Reyes are both performing well now, and Quincy and Lupoli look good prospects, but they won't get us 20+ goals a season, so someone like Alberto Gilardino would be fantastic. I think we should forget about signing SWP, he would cost too much, and I think David Bentley has a big future at Arsenal, and he can play left wing, right wing and up-front. Lastly, maybe a centre back to provide competition for Kolo, Big Phil and Sol; Dellas would be good, and we could pick him up for free. That could leave us with enough money to sign a 'superstar'
Post-match quotes:
Arsenal centre-back Philippe Senderos believes his side fully deserved their 2-0 win against West Brom on Wednesday
Goals from Robin van Persie and Edu sealed the victory at The Hawthorns, with Senderos impressing at the back.
Senderos told Sky Sports: "I think we were very serious at the back, we had to be more patient in the first half but in the second we tried to play our game and I think we deserved it in the end.
"We know it was a team that has to stay up and play until the end, we were ready at the back and scored the opportunities we had."
The win keeps the Gunners in the driving seat for a second-placed finish this season, but Senderos added: "We don't really care about the others but you want to win every game until the end.
"I think it's a team effort, we did very well to keep a clean sheet again and we have to congratulate the other players."
Senderos could be picked ahead of Sol Campbell for the FA Cup final, but he insists: "I don't think ahead, I think of the next game, which is Liverpool next weekend. We have to keep going."
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger was impressed with the Baggies, who remain in the bottom three with two games remaining.
Wenger added on Sky Sports: "In the first half it was a very difficult time. In the second we had a bit more space. Overall I feel if we don't concede goals we have the patience which we didn't always have.
"We want to grow as a team and get better and better. I feel we are achieving that but after the Manchester United game we had six points from six games and Chelsea made 16, that was the difference.

That won't happen. His not needed, and it's probably just an attempt by Wenger to get back at Real Madrid for the amount of times they have openly come out in the media expressing an interest in our players.
He would be a pointless signing as we would need to then get in a target-man, as his crosses would be useless without someone who can provide an aerial presence in the area.

Couldn't agree more.
It's not only the problem of having to adjust our tactics to accomodate him, but also our mentality. Beckham brings with him vast amounts of attention, invariably of the wrong kind, and it's just not what we need.
And as for him being a good merchandising prospect, well i'd rather just find some chinese hot shot and attract a fan base over there with him. So in summary he would bring little if anything to Arsenal.
For me, it would be a new keeper, ideally Hildebrand or Frey. Although Lehmann is in good form for us currently, we cannot have the worry over him making mistakes in key games next season.

Yeah the defence is looking good again, and it's largely down to big phil. Hopefully this could have the added advantage of making Wenger realise that he has some wonderful players already in his youth team that he can give more responsibility to, i.e. Bentley like you say reyes9, therefore taking a lot of pressure off of his shoulders in the summer.
I'd love to see the superstar be Rosicky. He could fill Bergkamps' place in the whole with great skill / ease. The guys young, he's got a great range of passing and a fearsome shot. He really has everything that Nedved has, and given time could match, or even surpass, his countryman.
As for the other choices you stated I agree with the defence, although I really don't know much about Dellas aside from his great performance at EC2004. If he's like that for Roma then he's the man.
I'd love to see SWP at Arsenal, but i think Wenger will only go for him if someone else does. But Bentley and SWP as the future wide men of Arsenal would be beautiful.
Gilardino would be immense but i can't see him leaving Italy. I think AC will pick him up. But if we get Rosicky then i'm fine with that, even though he may not contribute as many goals.
And obviously Hildebrand or Frey would be very nice indeed. But then again when is Wenger ever going to give Taylor a real chance? I'd like to see him given the #1 jersey next season, and Wenger get first refusal on one of the other 2. If Taylor turns out to be crap then buy one of them in January.

I also think Gilardino will end up at one of the Milan clubs, but hopefully we'll at least make an effort to sign him.
I'd love us to pick up Rosicky, but where would you play him? He has improved defensively and can now provide more of a physical challenge, so could probably play alongside Vieira, but then with G.Silva, Fabregas and Flamini already competing there, maybe putting him in the Bergkamp role would be more appropriate and suited to his style of play?
Good work in finding a clear pic adds102, I quite like it, it's better than I expected, so I'll definitely be buying it.

^ Exactly.
My main reason for wanting Rosicky is simply to deny all other clubs his signature. I know it's selfish, but I rate the guy incredibly highly, so if he were to line up against us, i.e. for ManU or Liverpool, i'd be scared of what he could do to us. I think we could accomodate him, but maybe i'm wrong about that. Maybe just another consistent goal scorer is what we need. Ah whatever, Wenger will figure it out.

There's been rumours of Rosicky joining Juventus.
It makes sense. Rosicky and Nedved are great friends. He would like to go where he can fit in easily and have someone to teach him the language. Who at Arsenal knows Czech?
I hope he goes to Juventus. As martin said, i rate him very, very highly. He's like Nedved, except quicker and a better dribbler.
On the topic of Bergkamp, i think they need to replace him.
I think they should go for someone like Del Piero.
You may say "but he's past it" but I was watching the Juventus - Inter game(Original? reminded me of this). A 50 yard pass out of defence is heading for Del Piero, who is running in the same direction as the ball. He sticks his heel out and flicks it on 20 yards, straight to Zlatan's feet. Think about that for a minute. Had that been Ronaldinho, we wouldn't hear the end of it.
Del Piero has still got it. Look at Zola. He looked done, then he went to England and became a born-again player. I think Del Piero should move away from Italy to England, maybe Arsenal, like i said. They're crying out for a replacement for Bergkamp. Del Piero isn't that old remember.
I want to see him succeed. I just think his future is over at Juventus. He should prove he's still got it, in England. Think what that could do for the Azzuri. His confidence skies again. He starts to play for Italy the way he used to play for Juventus. And Italy have a talismanic figure to lead their way, instead of scummy Totti.

Exactly. Figo was struggling to be any good in front of all his countrymen in EURO 2004, so I really don't want him to be coming our way. Let Bolton take him. I want to see us use Bentley, but if we do make a major signing in the wide areas then it'll hopefully be SWP. Now that guy is good, forget about Figo.
I don't know if Vieira will stay, but i thinkhe'd be crazy not to, as we're finally going to be shelling out loads. We've achieved a huge amount with very little so, given an extra boost like that, the possibilties are endless. We really could bring Chelsea crashing down, show them who the boss is. Why anyone would want to leave us is now is unimaginable.

Arsenal 3-1 Liverpool
Fantastic first half display from the Gunners, in which we made the Champions League finalists look 2nd rate, as Pires, Reyes and Fabregas in particular toyed with the Liverpool defence. Vieira was immense in the middle once again, but I think Senderos should take the M.O.T.M. accolade once again. He is just as solid as a rock. I can't see Sol Campbell making the team for the Cup final, as Senderos and Toure look like they've been alongside one another for years. We conceded our first goal in 9 hours today, and even that was very unfortunate. It was very arguable whether it should have been a free-kick and Gerrard's shot diverted off Fabregas into the corner. The young Spaniard needs to learn to be more brave in those situations, he did a similar thing against Charlton earlier in the season when El Karkouri's long range effort flew past him. Apart from that, it was another brilliant performance by our young star. He outshone Gerrard and Alonso for most of the match.
We took our foot off the pedal in the 2nd half, and Liverpool dominated possession, but Reyes and Pires looked very lively and set us off on some dangerous counter attacks. All 3 goals were excellent; Pires with a delightful free kick over the wall, following a horrible challenge from Hamann on Vieira. Hamann should feel himself lucky not to have recieved a red card today. Reyes played well again, and scored a very good goal, taking the ball past a few Liverpool players before planiting the goal through Dudek's legs, and the last goal was a tremendous move which Fabregas finished off neatly. Earlier in the game, we almost scored what would have been one of the team moves of the season, as Lauren hit the underside of the bar, following great passing and movement.
We have almost almost guaranteed the 2nd spot now, as we are 6 points above Man U with a superior goal difference.
Ratings:
Lehmann - 7.5 Made a brilliant double save from Gerrard and Kewell and marshalled his defence well.
Cole - 8 Solid at the back, and very good going forward. Never look too troubled.
Toure - 8 Showed pace and power to get back on two occasions when it looked as if Liverpool might be in.
Senderos - 9 Man of the match. Another great defensive display. Kept Baros and Cisse at bay.
Lauren - 7.5 OK in defence, but looked very dangerous going forward, unlucky not to score when his shot hit the underside of the bar in the first half.
Pires - 8 Very good display. Fantastic free-kick, he should be allowed more of the free-kick duties.
Gilberto Silva - 6.5 Cruised the first half, but wasn't as effective as usual in the 2nd at breaking up the oppositions attacks.
Vieira - 8 Dominated the midfield fir the majority of the match. Coming back to his best.
Fabregas - 8 Fantastic vision and good running, full of energy. Capped off his performance with a lovely team goal at the end.
Reyes 8- Very dangerous, was a thorn in the side of Liverpool. Good goal.
Van Persie - 7 Not at his best, but showed some nice touches and control.
Subs:
Bergkamp - 7 Lovely pass for the final goal, showed some good skill.
Edu - 7 Nice passing towards the end, he will be a fantastic pick-up.
Aliadiere - 6.5 Lively

Well said a nice little spirit lifter. We're having a very nice build up to the Cup Final. Freddie is gonna have a bit of a fight to get his spot back...
Funny how Alonso complains about Gudjohnsen diving, then blatanly falls to the ground.
He probably recieves harder nudges walking down the street.

Had Riise converted that glorious chance he had in the first half, the game might have gone differently. Our defending was pretty woeful in the first period, to be honest. In the second half, however, we were like a different team. We totally dominated, we made Arsenal look like an average side and I thought they were lucky to get the win. We had numerous chances and we limited them to only a couple. Unfortunately though, they took theirs and we never took ours.

Sounds very much like a summary of Liverpool vs. Chelsea to me.
Lets try not to be too forgetful shall we.
