View Full Version : How do the English treat the foreigners there?
See after completing my first year of Uni, I have sights set on transferring to England for the second year and most likely finish it out there. Now I've seen some remarks on how the English treat their foreigners in the country, which wasn't really positive. Then again, I don't always believe what I read. And it doesn't really bother me on how they'll treat me (Greek) but I am really really curious. See in Greece believe it or not, the Government tend to favour the foreigners more. Let's say there was an accident with a local and foreigner the Greek police themselves will look to favour the foreigner more. In other countries, completely the opposite, you have no chance whatsoever.
So what should I expect living there in England? Will it be nice (I know the football will), how will they look at me, any advantages/disadvantages, maybe some racism? It'll just be nice to know beforehand.

Being Greek, expect many Kebab jokes. Especially if you have a tache.
Seriously, some people are retards and might give you some hassle. Some will welcome you with open arms and feed off your foreign charms.
Most however won't give a shit where you are from as long as you are an OK guy. ;)
UK is ok as long as you can handle the shitty weather and the even worse weather prediction.

We've got enough foreigners in this country as it is. Fuck off.
In all seriousness, you won't have a problem. Most students I've met wouldn't say boo to a goose.

Stella you are so sweet ;)
At least we know you're not racist.... you just hate every fucker equally!! :)

I don't think you'll have any problems at all - the fact you seem to speak English fluently will do you a world of good too.
Try make sure you go to a University based within a good city. That way most wouldn't even look at you twice even if you were green because most decent cities are full of strange, but interesting, people. Britain is full of foreigners so you'll be fine and obviously like in all countries you may come across the odd idiot who doesn't take kindly to your kind, but trust me these people are a minority.
Also British girls are easy ;)

The fact that there's more of you than there are the English will probably help, too.
You also have the precarious "advantage" of being able to go after all the fit Greek birds, most of whom think they're "rudegirls" (i.e. think they're black) and only go for blacks or fellow Greeks.
On the whole, it may depend on what area you're going to - however, you have nothing to fear from the university populace. All students are pussies, anyway.

Am I right in thinking your dad's Spanish, and your mother's English?

If you're going to a decent university then the support you'll get being an International Student will be excellent. Most students won't be bothered either way whether you're from Greece or England as long as you're an ok lad. If anyone is at all bothered I imagine you'll get more people being nice to you than the other way round, and women seem to like European guys.
You'll be in virtually the same situation as anyone joining a University regardless of nationality.

Hmm....
Wouldn't you be placed in a class full of International students? That should help ease the transition right off the bat. Anyway big city uni's are usually packing with foreigners, at least here.
Do the English like Americans?
Also, maybe Its just me but I get a vibe here that Americans love English people. Must be the accent. I love English women. There accents are fucking sexy as hell. Sorry for going a bit off topic.

You should be OK, I can't say that I've ever been the victim of racist abuse. I would say, generally, people are alright with foreigners, I think with so many living in the country, people arent as ignorant anymore. Of course you get the odd idiot, but what country doesnt have those sort of people, and they are in a minority.
One of my friends is an Arab, and has lived here for all his life, and he hasnt been persecuted because of his roots. He is happy here, and I think the same can be said of alot of foreigners that have settled here. There is definatly not a big racism/xenophobic problem in this country, well amongst the general, everyday people anyway.
I have a Turkish Family living next to me and they've had not many problem's at all.
I think you'll be fine, mate. You do get some idiots but then again, don't you get some idiots in every country? Adan seemed to think that you were coming down this Summer and meeting us, or us meeting you .

Classes will most likely be fully integrated. Nikos may, however, find that he is living with other foreign students, assuming he applies for university accommodation rather than private.
As has already been mentioned, there's really nothing to worry about. Inevitably there will be some idiots around (take it from an Englishman in Wales) but the vast majority of people, particularly fellow students, won't care where you're from.

You'll be fine mate, especially in London. People will be interested in you to start with, but your personality will depend on how people treat you.

If they want to live here, don't dress like they are still in their own country(all covered up). And learn to speak our language.
If they do that then they don't bother me and I won't be nasty to them or anything.
Obviously if they are not Muslims etc, and are Spanish, Australian then I welcome them. Because they are all easy to get on with and create no tension from what I've seen.

While I have objections to the fact that Muslim women are often forced to wear certain clothes, I dislike your assertion that the clothes themselves must be removed/replaced in order for you accept them. If you had a brain, you may instead wish to see damaging social constraints - similar in nature to your proposal - scrapped.
Obviously if they are not Muslims etc, and are Spanish, Australian then I welcome them. Because they are all easy to get on with and create no tension from what I've seen.
So you believe that all Muslims are troublesome? What amazing logic backs that up, pray tell? Actually, don't tell. Have a few weeks off.
