After seeing all of the images and video I think it is safe to say that there is nobody which is exclusively to blame. The Roma fans started it but it is not as if this doesn't happen in most games, even if it is not to this scale. The United fans shouldn't of reacted in the way they did as there was nothing they could do apart from throw bottles and smack the plastic barrier. The Italian police shouldn't of reacted so harshly but you can understand why they did after all of the stuff happening around the time of the policemans death.

Basically everybody had a part to play in a situation which was always a possibility after that warning was sent out to the United fans.

As shown from the clips a women is pushed by one of the police for no apparent reason, then that guy gets hit on the head for no reason the Itallian police are complete cowards, a policeman was killed yes but it wasn't exactly English fans at that time it was a match between two Itallian teams..

Anyone can beat anyone on their day I believe, I remember we got battered about 3-0 of York once at Old Trafford I believe. It may have been 5-0 actually, my memory is rather stale. But I think you get the idea, despite United being a very good team, great this season in fact I still imagine Roma or AC Milan for that matter being challenging.

muhahaha

I can understand the Italian police using brute force and physical power if necessary. However some of the beatings they dished out simply cannot be defended, they cannot even be understood I'm afraid. Hitting someone on the head 7 times with a baton despite the fan already lying on the floor is absolutely pathetic, cowardess and inexcusable. The policeman could have killed him, it really was that stupid. I could understand the police hitting the troublemakers as they would soon fleet back but to continuously pummel helpless fans is atrocious. Fans now have dislocated shoulders, broken bones and bloodied faces.

True, maybe I should of specified that I believe they were right to react to the United fans but they definitely went over the top. I've just seen one video which shows one of the policeman hit someone, the person then tries to crawl away but the policeman grabs him and drags him back and hits him again. It is disgusting and shouldn't be tolerated but what I meant was that you can't blame them for reacting.

Fair enough mate, I agree.

But as Badgerman has previously said: such stadiums appear to be a deathtrap for fans, and a haven for violence.

All in all, most Italian fans seem like Ultras, which means that the actual ultras must be real horrid forms of life.

Those stadiums do seem a bit unplanned. If the section which the United fans were in was totally full then I wouldn't of been surprised if there was deaths. I mean if the police had rushed in and tried to beat the fans people would of been everywhere and there could of been trampling. I definitely think that the stadiums need to be looked at.

I hope you're right mate. After thinking about it throughout most of the night, I do expect to continue in this competition and get to the next round. However, I'm not sure whether it'll just be 1-0, I have a feeling we may win 2-0. We'll be throwing absolutely everything at them and they'll crack I'm certain of it.

I'm pretty confident we can get a goal, when Rooney was getting amongst their defence they looked very dodgy and Rooney had a few good openings and Ronaldo had a good chance at the start of the second half. We are missing Scholes but Roma now have Perotta banned and he is as important to them as Scholes is to us.

I think it is a case of who gets the first goal. If Man U scores first, then I think they will go through with relative ease, but if Roma scores first I think it will go to extra time...then it is anyones game. I can't see Roma winning over the 90 minutes.

Click (http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/news;_ylt=AiGnaCTaxHuHb7H4VFf9 SIwmw7YF?slug=reu-championsromaviolence&prov=reuters&type=lgns)

ROME, April 4 (Reuters) - Manchester United fans and Italian police clashed during the halftime break at the Champions League quarter-final with AS Roma which the English side lost 2-1 on Wednesday.

Television pictures from Rome's Olympic Stadium showed Italian police wading in and flailing at Manchester United fans with batons with several United fans bleeding profusely from head wounds.

The trouble inside the stadium started a minute before halftime, when Rodrigo Taddei put Roma ahead and the rival supporters started to trade insults and throw objects from one section of the ground to the other.

One policeman was shown raining blows on a supporter who was lying motionless on the ground, and the pictures evoked memories of the 1970s and eighties when crowd violence and hooliganism was rife at European club matches.

A Reuters photographer saw one Manchester fan lying on the ground with blood coming from his forehead. The man was led away from police by other supporters.

A Roma fan who was in the stadium said the police made two charges against the English fans apparently in response to the throwing of missiles.

By the start of the second half the violence had calmed down.

An official at San Giacomo hospital in central Rome said one United fan had been admitted with a stab wound to the abdomen.

His condition was not critical but he would have to remain in hospital for at least one day, he told Reuters.

Italian news agency ANSA reported earlier three Manchester fans were later taken in handcuffs to the stadium's police station.

One of them was described as having a large head wound.

United fans were kept in the stadium for around 90 minutes after the end of the game before being escorted away.

As well as serious trouble at Italian grounds this season which peaked with the death of a policeman in Sicily, there was also trouble when Manchester United fans travelled to France to play Lille at Lens in February.

United had written to their travelling supporters earlier this week warning them to take extra care from Roma's "ultra" fans while in the Italian capital.

Man United are likely to go through anyway - they got the vital away goal. Roma bottled it yesterday. They should've won at least 3-1 at their own ground. The tie should've been wrapped up. If they couldn't do that, then I can't see how they're going to secure a win or perhaps even a draw at Old Trafford.

Then again, Man united have hardly been inspirational in the Champions League.

Some good and bad news for the weekend. Evra is back in the squad but Park isn't back. Hope fully with Evra back Heinze will go into the middle with Rio and Wes Brown will go to right back. It is going to be a hard game down at Fratton Park and with Chelsea playing before us they could really put the pressure on, hopefully Chelsea will drop points though as they've got Tottenham.

True, they also had to play the FA Cup replay against Chelsea 36 hours after the Reading game.

Here's the squad for todays game,

Van der Sar, Kuszczak, O'Shea, Ferdinand, Brown, Heinze, Evra, Ronaldo, Fletcher, Scholes, Carrick, Giggs, Richardson, Eagles, Rooney, Smith, Solskjaer, Saha, Dong.

Personally I would like to see the same team as the one which played Roma, Solskjaer deserves another start as he was one of the best players in midweek. Can't see it happening though as Saha is basically fully fit. Evra's back thank god, hopefully O'Shea won't start.

-------------VDS---------------
Wes------Rio-----Gabi------Evra

Oh, and don't mistake "luck" for "quality".

United losing this game seems to be the highlight of your season. Pretty sad really.

I was pointing more at their luck, but I didn't expect someone like you to get that ;)

Our luck?

You mean the same luck that had our goalkeeper's skull crushed, our best defender and leader injured for a long time and not being able to use our most creative players (J.Cole and Robben) at the same time?

You are right I was shit at Maths but that is hardly relevant. What I was getting at is them winning 6 will be enough to win them the Title in my opinion.

As I said in the Chelski thread the long you stay in the cups the better. Your lack of squad depth and over reliance on your "old" players will be your down fall.

Ferguson wanted to rest Giggs today for that reason, he would have loved to have given Scholes a chance to come off with about 15 mins.

He knows what I know and what anyone with half a brain knows. Chelski are warming up and you are winding down.

Ferguson has lost the plot. First he said Scholes should not have been sent off in the roma game (HAHAHA) he virtually assulated Totti with the second tackle and the first one was just idiotic. Now he leaves out key players for a game it was clear they were going to struggle in. I looked at the run-in and portsmouth away, was the hardest. Win that and you are home. Lose. and it gets interesting. I hate Chelsea, but i hate man u even more so i want Chelsea to win the prem, Liverpool or roma for the CL, watford or blackburn for the FA cup and spurs for the UEFA cup.

Wow, whatever your name is (Liverpool fan) you seemed like this is the highlight of your season. Which is remarkably sad.

As for the game, the only players who actually wanted to win were Rio, Gabby and possibly Rooney, along with Smudger coming on later. I thought the combination of O'Shea, Richardson and Fletcher was terrible enough but when Giggs came on he had a case for worst player. His passing was equivalent to that of Van der Sar's awareness lately. He only played well for maybe 5 minutes towards the very end, otherwise he was shockingly shit. Van der Sar can just stop being a pratt as well, an experienced world-class goalkeeper turns into piss overnight it seems. If we had Foster back I'm sure he would get his game next Premiership match. We need Vidic and Neville back, possibly Evra too as without all them our defence were shaky as fuck. Worse than a Watford backline, and Middlesbrough stuck 4 past them yesterday.

PS: Has anyone received their Roma tickets yet ? United appear to be fucking everyone about, or at least us.

It just depends on what you like, The Bishop Blaize has cheaper drinks than a lot of match-day pubs. However it's a modern-looking pub instead of the old traditional pubs, it just depends what you like. There's also a place across the bridge called "Lime", I haven't been in there myself but it looks alright. It always appears packed so it could make for a decent atmosphere before the game.

Finally got my Roma ticket, but because United have been so late with this, we're having to pick them all up just outside the ground I guess. But thanks to United being morons with regards to these Roma tickets, my mate now can't go it seems.

I was talking to my Grandad earlier today and he was saying that our game against Boro on the 21st April maybe pushed back. I can imagine this being mayhem if so, because our Chelsea match has already been rescheduled due to the Champions League and what not.

:w00t

As long as Totti and Perottat are not playing I am happy.

United and Arsenal are tipped to rival each other for the signing of French international winger Franck Ribery this summer.

The Marseille winger has openly voiced his desire to feature in the Champions League next season, and he may depart France to realise his ambition.

The Daily Mirror expects Ribery to command a fee of around £13million, with long-term admirers United and Arsenal the main contenders for his signature.

Rumours persist that United are set to renew their interest in Tottenham's Bulgarian international striker Dimitar Berbatov when the transfer window re-opens.

The on-song forward was linked with United before signing for Spurs last summer, and the player himself claimed there was strong interest in his services from Old Trafford.

Martin Jol has voiced his intent to keep hold of Berbatov beyond the end of this season, but various tabloids continue to link United with a summer bid in the region of £19million.

Berbatov joins long term targets Owen Hargreaves and Nani on Sir Alex Ferguson's supposed shopping list, while Mikael Silvestre and Wes Brown continue to be linked with Newcastle.

I like the news of Ribery(perhaps our new number 12 or 17). I'd prefer him over Nani(even if he's Portuguese) because he's got more experience which will help us for the following seasons and because he can play on both the right and left sides of midfield and forward wings.(LMF,RMF,LWF,RWF) He's good at tricks too, so is Nani but I still prefer "Scarface". There's also a young guy from Marseille, name's Samir Nasri( He's French although his first name is muslim) He plays very well both for his club and the France Senior National Team.

And I think we'll need to get in a new defender after offloading "Alien-head" and "Brownie".

I can say that our attack force is pretty good(apart from the fact that Ole will retire this or next season),
We've got:
1. Wayne
2. Saha
3. Smudgy
4. Dongy
5. Ole
6. Rossi

If Ole and Smudge are leaving it leaves us to 4 which is alright but then IF, only if Rossi goes on loan again, we can get a forward on loan, someone like Guddy or buy a young attacker like Babel from Ajax(don't think he'll be expensive.)

Concerning our midfield problems I still maintain that we must get some one like Sneijder, Kevin Nolan or someone in the mould of Viera or Roy Keane.

De Rossi scored a great volley - I could watch it over and over again and it still would look good. Both of Carrick's goal weren't too bad either.

Marvelous in every way. A glorious example of counter attacking football with pace and precision. What better way to beat an Italian team (albeit one that doesn't exactly play like the Italian stereo type).

Well played Smiffy, put pressure on the centre backs constantly and Fletcher stopped the midfield from settling into any kind of rythm.

Recon a wager was agreed during the match between the lads to see who could chip the keeper, Rooney from half way line, Smith edge of area and Oli left foot later on.

I haven't seen Sky Sports yet but they usually just pick the most dramatic interviews to twist things it has to be said.

I was right next to everything flaring, whether I missed anything I don't know, but I strolled into it all at around 6pm I think. From what I saw mate, the Roma fans were certainly the more imposing of the two sides. They charged down us first, and that's when loads of people backed into the Megastore and what not. Then something on the far side happened and I'm not sure whether it was Roma or United fans, but there were hundreds sprinting somewhere. After all the taunting from both sides and gestures, it all started to kick off with about 50 United guys rushing towards the crowd of Roma fans. They soon seemed to back away though after Roma started through bottles and other shit. Soon after the Police arrived, yes, the Police were barely there when it was all happening. The Police were shite as well, they seriously hadn't really turned up until it was beginning to die down.

What I didn't like to see was some from the Roma section I believe hurling bottles and what not at the Police horses. I don't think the Police did enough though to really squash the mayhem, they just stood around for the most part. They may not have beaten anyone to death but they were fairly late to get into the action.

I don't want a hostile reply from you though mate, since it seems it's being kicking off in this thread lately. I'm just saying what I saw, as I was literally yards away from the scenes.

It was undoubtedly the best game I've been to, it had absolutely everything needed to create a quality match. I certainly don't condone violence or hooliganism but I think the early sparks and scraps helped build a better atmosphere in and around the ground. The place was buzzing throughout the game and it's definetely safe to say we got the upper hand on the Roma fans when singing for the majority of the match. I believe this is the first match I've ever been to at Old Trafford where pretty much the entire ground has been singing and what not. It proves that Champions League nights are incredibly special, they always have that extra something to take a game from great to extraordinary. The whole place was rocking on a lot of occasions, it was incredible to be a part of.

When we first got our tickets at the Office, they said "North East Quadrant Tier 2" and I thought lord, it might be a graveyard night. And when I was strolling up to my area, I saw some padded seats nearby and again thought - graveyard. But, shockingly, everyone seemed to be going for it, standing, jumping, singing, it was something special. I haven't even got onto the game itself yet either.

I loved the fact we were going into the game 2-1 in a way, because we had to come out of the blocks with aggressive attacking football. That we certainly did. Smudger was superb, constantly closing down the Roma defence and forcing them to play panic balls. It was the perfect example of defending from the frontline. Fletcher also played top draw, and he chased every ball down and helped open up the play along with Carrick and Giggs. There was always that extra pressure of Carrick to score more this season, and recently he's been answering the critics so I couldn't be happier. Both very well taken goals, especially the second, it was an absolute beauty. The first was nicely comforted into the net, but with so little power the keeper should have at least tried stretching for it, although his view may have been blocked, I don't really know. Ronaldo again was shining extremely well, in the opening few minutes I was unsure whether it was going to come off for him tonight. However he just outdid himself with the performance, he was unreal. Even the many tricks he was trying in the latter stages were being pulled off well.

It was good to see Van Der Sar being the controlling goalkeeper we all know him to be. Plucked several crosses out of the air with ease and made one or two decent saves when called upon. Overall though, his job wasn't too difficult considering we raped Roma. I honestly can't say any one of our players last night played poorly, or even average. On another note as well, the Referee had a very solid game, allowing free-flowing football and making the correct decisions 95% of the time. He should be chuffed with his performance, I'm sure he slept easy on the night.

The scoreline was astonishing, it felt so good sticking it to the horrible Roma fans. I'm still dumbfounded by the brilliance of the performance and 7-1 victory. The football on show was class A, we probably could have beaten any side in the world last night from by playing like we did. It felt quality being involved in the night, and I'm sure I won't ever forget this match. I'd also like to point out Sweey, you were right, you posted saying United would win easily. I doubted that and stated it'll be a struggle, I guess I was wrong. Not only did we slaughter them, we did it without the likes of Vidic, Neville, Scholes, Saha which is even more respectable. They're 4 very key players to our success this season, this just epitimises the spirit of the team. I do feel that the crowd last night were the 12th man though undoubtedly, the noise generated was amazing and I haven't witnessed anything like it.

Bayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer admits his club could be tempted to sell midfielder Owen Hargreaves when the transfer window opens.

United have been consistently linked with a move for the England international and allegedly still have an offer on the table for his services.

Beckenbauer told German television channel Premiere: "If it is right there is an offer of 25-30m euros (£17-20m), then I would seriously consider it.

"I think the board also think this way to satisfy the needs of the player."

Hargreaves has openly voiced his desire to move back to England on several occasions, with Sir Alex Ferguson making no secret of his admiration for the 26-year-old.

Just been reading about this, I wouldn't mind getting him but for £20m it would be extortion. I would think £8m would be a fair price but as he is English his price was always going be bumped up.

I suppose that Ferdinand could go DMF but I wouldn't want to break up a great partnership and I can't see it happening.

Once again maybe a few seasons ago Gudjohnson would of been a good buy but he is getting on in years and what we really need now is a poacher. I am confident that once we have Saha, Smith and Rooney all fit and then maybe get another young striker then our attack will be strong enough.

As I said earlier, Ryan Babel, Klaas Jan Huntelaar or Chinedu Ogbuke(He scored 8 goals in his last 8 games, according to Wikipedia) would be good choices.

Then we'll need one winger IMO either Frank Ribery or Nani would be fine and a good centre-midfielder, i.e Wesley Sneijder, Kevin Nolan or Nuri Sahin.

And I'm pretty sure we'll get 3 of these players(SMF,CMF,CF) for no more than 25 million pounds, i.e the price we were going to pay for Hargreaves.

As you have noticed I mentioned 3 Dutch guys. It's nothing racist, it's only the fact that they are great young players. Given the good coaching, advice and guide they'll become world-class.
