Depends how you define size really, as if it was based on support then we'd be right up there, but unfortunately it isn't. We do have a huge tradition, unfortunately this stems back more than 50 years. Along with a lot more clubs as well.
What a lot of our fans don't seem to realise is they have been spoilt by both Keegan and Robson, and that football started prior to 1992.
Unfortunately at this moment in time I can't say I have an answer to your question, something however I will ponder on my return from the pub either today or tomorrow.
It's refreshing to hear a Newcastle fan say that.
Newcastle no doubt are a very well supported club, but my major complaint about Newcastle fans is when certain Geordies go on and on about how they're the best supported club in England, with by far the most passionate fans, giving reference to the cacophany of noise St James' is every week. They seem to forget the pre-1992 attendances of around 20,000. Not exactly statistics to be proud of considering Newcastle United are the only club in a fairly big city.
My other complaint is the eagerness and anticipation of the 'Geordie faithful' to boo after about 5 games without a win. They're almost City-esque in that respect. A side completely lacking in quality who hasn't won any trophy of note in over half a century booing when their team isn't qualifying for Europe every season.
And as for the 'true support' debate, I reckon there's out of town reds on this board who have been to more United games this season than a lot of Newcastle fans.

I really want him to go and get Huntelaar, saw him play this weekend and thought he was brilliant.
Also heard a few rumors about new signings.
Firstly, Gilberto, a LB who plays for Hertha Berlin. I must say that one surprised me, he's 31 and to be honest he isn't that good, though he would just be a back up player.
Secondly, i read we were interested in going for Henrik Larsson on a similar deal to the one we had last year, it probably wont happen and in a way i'm glad, he was excellent for us last year and we really missed him once he went back to Helsingsborg.
Others were Berbatov obviously but i cant see Fergie splashing out £31m or whatever for him, he is very good but not anywhere near that good. We have also been linked with Benzema which would be excellent, he is a terrific young player and to be able to chose between him Rooney and Tevez for a place up front would be unbelievable.
But after all that i really don't think we will end up buying anybody in the remaining transfer window, i know we have brought in that Manucho fellow, but i had never heard of him before, anybody know what he is like?
Who does everybody else want to bring in?

Manchester United will resist the temptation to sell Wes Brown before the January 31 transfer deadline, despite the growing danger of losing him on a free transfer at the end of the season. Brown has reached an impasse with the club, who have refused his demands for a contract extension worth £55,000 a week, but, despite firm interest from Everton, Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United, Sir Alex Ferguson, the manager, will not sell.
“We did turn down an offer from Newcastle a couple of weeks ago,” David Gill, the United chief executive, said. “But it’s unlikely that a team would come in and offer something substantial for him when he is out of contract in the summer.
why arent we securing Wes' contract? He's done well to fill in for Nev.

Saha's goals mission
Louis Saha is determined to fire United to glory this season and finally overcome his injury nightmare.
The Reds' striker has started just eight games this season after being dogged by setbacks throughout the campaign. He did, however, make a successful return to goalscoring form during United's Boxing Day victory over Sunderland.
And despite missing out the Reds' 6-0 victory over Newcastle last weekend, the 29-year-old says he is now ready to put his injury problems behind him and make an important contribution to the Reds' cause.
"It's great to score goals. I'm a striker and that's my job and now I want to concentrate on scoring more goals for the team," he told United Review.
"I'm very hard on myself and always want to do better, so I'm not very satisfied with how the season has gone so far on a personal level.
"I know I can do better, and hopefully I showed that against Sunderland. The manager's always shown a lot of faith in me and that gives me a lot of confidence.
"I'm definitely getting there [with overcoming injuries]. I played two full games in a row over Christmas and that was the first time I'd done that for a while.
"So things are improving and I'm looking to play even more. My target now is to stay fit and keep finding the back of the net."
With United well placed in the league, through to the knock-out stages of the Champions League and into the fourth round of the FA Cup, Saha believes 2008 could be another successful year for the Reds.
"We think it'll be and we hope it'll be, but we have to make sure we finish the season well," he insisted. "From this point, we have to be very clinical in terms of results."

Stars to ditch fancy boots
Manchester United stars will ditch their fancy boots for next month’s derby with City as a tribute to the Munich air disaster victims. Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and Rio Ferdinand have all asked their sponsors for black boots to mark the 50th anniversary of the tragedy. A United source said: “It was the players’ idea. They are aware of the significance of this game.”

Cristiano Ronaldo's mum has said that it is her dream to see her son one day play for Real Madrid and if he does move then she will go to the Spanish capital too.
Dolores Aveiro revealed her passion for Los Merengues during an interview with AS at her home on the island of Madeira, describing the club as the best in the world.
In a statement, she claimed that she would not be able to rest until she had seen her son play in the all white of Madrid.
"They are my favourite team, the best in the world," she said.
"If one day he were to leave England then I would really like to see him go to Madrid.
"I would not like to die without seeing my son playing there, then I could go knowing that my dream was fulfilled."
Nothing imminent
While rumours and reports have linked Ronaldo to Madrid in the past, Dolores understands though that no transfer from Manchester United is imminent.
"Maybe he cannot go now, but perhaps in a couple of years," she continued.
"If he moved to Madrid I would go and live with him there. I love that city."
According to AS, Ronaldo's career has been guided by his mother as she advised him about his early choices and told him to go to Sporting Lisbon and not Benfica.

This is the only season (since we have been in the competition) that we have not meant Barcelona and there is still time for that to happen.
Liverpool are a different animal in the Champions League, you won't realise unless your team plays them.
We've also had Milan, Arsenal, Porto (twice) and Valencia (twice) during our short history in the competition. This year we have to play in the last 16 Olympiakos.

Ronaldo has scored a few goals past the Gooners in the past, so I'm not overly worried. Plus, if he turns up in the other 32 games of the League season I won't argue ;)
I always thought it would be worse if someone didn't turn up to the smaller games.
He might not play well but he gets it done, a goal and an assist against Arsenal away without playing well is good enough for me.

Ronaldo, what can i say, absolutely brilliant.
Very impressed with all the defence today, and after a poor performance from Evra at the weekend it was great to see him play as well as he did, Rio too was brilliant, Rooney was impressive shame he didn't get a goal and i was very impressed with Anderson once he came on.
Spurs again this weekend, should be interesting as they will have a few new signings playing that day.

I've watched Ronaldo take freekicks and I know the secret to his technique. He hits the ball on the nozzle (the place where you pump it up). This makes the ball change shape and affects it's spin and flight, causing it to travel very unpredictably. It often fails, but when it works, the results can be spectacular.
Whats your opinion mancunians?

As LostGalactico said, the nozzle thing is nothing new. They were showing the technique he used over & over last night, a funny half step on the toe of his boot. Looks od, but if it works...
Big part of his technique is power. On his day he is one of the purest strikers of a ball since Sir Bobby.

he's scored from memory already 3 free kicks this season, we were lucky for him to score 3 all up since he started a while back.
Scholes was brilliant in the first half yesterday but I don't think he's quite match fit yet as he started to fade in the second, great to see him back though. Carrick looks much better when Scholes is playing too.
I thought Nani was pretty good last night, he hasn't started much but he didn't do his future chances any harm. I like the way he is basically copying Ronaldo on set-pieces, boots, etc.

Agreed. Carrick does look at his best when Scholes is playing. Especially when he's been subbed to allow the ginger ninja on.
Sorry, but i just don't get the whole Carrick thing. He was above average in a weak Spurs midfield, and now he's below par in a decent Man U side. I keep hearing about his 'great distribution', but i've yet to see any.
Anderson or Scholes with Hargreaves (despite my reservation, the fella's doing well) tucked in behind is the wasy to go.

I just think hargreaves is proving to be better in the DFM role. More solid.
I would definitely have Hargreaves and Scholes when everybody is fit but I think Carrick is good enough to start for us if we need him to. Don't forget that last season it was him and Scholes in centre midfield for most of the season.
I agree with part of what ficklered said. Carrick is a good squad player. He is not in the same league as Cesc Fabregas, let alone Paul Scholes. He definitely isn't worth the 16-18 million quids paid for him. There are so many better players out there that we could have had for that price.
Also who is the player with Tevez in that picture?

Get out.
Carrick is a brilliant player.
Anybody who knows how a team functions can see that Carrick has been absoloutley instrumental in United's metamorphasis from a squad of talented individuals to a very strong team. He was the only meaningful player United signed in 2006 and the transformation from looking woefully far behind Chelsea to a team capable of being crowned the best in the country is no fluke. He was a key player in us winning the season last year, and the only thing he suffers from is seemingly a lack of confidence in his own ability.
It's a glowing reflection of current prosperity on the pitch that Carrick is merely one of four top class central midfielders we have at our disposal.
Get out.
While I agree with Meyyappan, in no way is Flamini better than Carrick. At least not technique-wise

Maybe that's because he is a DMF and Carrick isn't.
I can see us dropping points away at Spurs this weekend, they're in good form at the moment and have sorted their defence out since we played them last week. I reckon a 1-1 draw.

After all this time and we still aren't sure exactly what Carrick does or what he is meant to do. He isn't a DMF and yet he isn't attacking because he doesn't score goals. His passing is generally short and simple but hardly incisive. He basically does very little in my view.
However saying that he doesn't do anything wrong and he is a good squad player. Having him has definitely made the squad very strong so it's not the case like a few years ago when we lost scholes or keane to injury there was no one to replace them. Hargreaves, Scholes and Carrick are all very strong (or maybe solid in Carrick's case) in central positions so we're always sorted there. And no need to bring on Fletcher which is the best part.

Carricks passng is far from poor. Last year everyone was saying how he was worth the money, but now it seems everyone has changed their mind, despite him doing alright so far this season. I'm here to stick up for him http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/4997/armsfoldedgv6.png
We shouldn't really be playing a DMF in most home games anyway, so I'd play Carrick for home games and Hargreaves for away games and CL matches.

Ronaldo at Arsenal before Man Utd
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and Man Utd winger Cristiano Ronaldo
Wenger has established a superb record for spotting talent
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has told BBC Sport he was interested in Cristiano Ronaldo before the winger joined Manchester United in August 2003.
Wenger believes the Portuguese winger Ronaldo signed for United due to the club's links with Sporting Lisbon.
Wenger said: "He was here much earlier - he could tell you that if he wants.
"Manchester United had a partnership with Sporting Lisbon when United assistant coach Carlos Queiroz moved and that made it very difficult."
Wenger refused to elaborate any further when questioned about Ronaldo's time with Arsenal.
"I don't want to create any story that isn't needed," the Frenchman told BBC football correspondent Jonathan Legard.
606: DEBATE
Your thoughts on Wenger's revelation
Ronaldo has been in sensational form all season, scoring 27 goals as well as setting up countless others for the Premier League leaders.
Since joining Arsenal in 1996, Wenger has established an unparallelled reputation for identifying and buying Europe's finest young players.
You know i always thought about it. how come wenger never knew about ronaldo if he has found so many other excellent young players?well who knows we could have a similar player in the upcoming years.:D

Original?

if you were top flight footballers woudl you invest in the housing market?
If I were on the sorts of wages some of the top players are on, I'd look into some of the Wealth Management sectors.
Ronaldo buying a £4m mansion wouldn't surprise me if this is true:
CRISTIANO RONALDO will become the highest paid player in Premier League history with Manchester United ready to offer him a £44million contract.
The Portuguese star, 22, will be presented with a deal worth £140,000 a week that would tie him to Old Trafford until 2014.
That would see him leapfrog Chelsea skipper John Terry, who has a contract worth £130,000 a week. Ronaldo, who has scored 27 goals already this season, would earn an incredible £7million a year with his new deal.
And that would send Ronaldo soaring to the top of the Old Trafford pay stakes ahead of Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand.
Manager Sir Alex Ferguson has only just been given the go-ahead by the Glazer family to break United's wage structure but Old Trafford sources are confident Ronaldo will put pen to paper in the summer.
The winger only signed a five-year deal last season which takes him through to 2012 but Ferguson is keen to reward him for his scintillating form and stunning strike rate that have taken him within reach of George Best's record for a winger of 33 goals in a season.
And United also want to ‘ring fence' the player to keep him out of reach of Real Madrid. Fergie is convinced Real are trying to unsettle his player through ‘leaked' stories in a Spanish sports paper but insists Ronaldo is happy to stay put.
United have also been alerted to the risk that they might lose Ronaldo in two years after a landmark ruling this week by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The decision means that Ronaldo could break his contract with two years remaining by handing over the remaining value of his wages.
That would see him become available in 2010 for a mere £10m as he is currently on £100,000 a week. The ruling means all top clubs will be forced to review the contracts of their stars long before they expire.

God its an absolute joke the amount footy players are on, 140k a week lol its laughable.
Supply and demand in effect, unfortunately. A smart move by United of course, unless the other top players want parity with CRonaldo in which case you'll set the bar for wages higher for players that may come in the future.

While Cygan is definitely crap, brown is mediocre but they are still footballers, you sir aren't therefor you aren't better than them. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
The above rule does not apply to Peter Crouch or Darren Fletcher however.

it would be funny if they bought it from toffs.
Welbeck could make derby bow
United's 18-year-old striker Danny Welbeck could be handed a shock first team debut in Sunday's derby against Manchester City.
The highly-rated teenager has been tipped for a bright future by Sir Alex Ferguson in recent weeks, and the United manager revealed on Friday that Welbeck's first team promotion could be fast-tracked.
"I'm bringing the boy Welbeck in," he told his pre-match press conference. "He'll be involved on Sunday, possibly from the start. We think he's got the temperament."
Welbeck's inclusion in the squad has been prompted by the suspension of Wayne Rooney and, after a hectic midweek programme of internationals, Sir Alex is waiting on the fitness of a number of players who picked up knocks with their countries before naming his side.
"On the injury front, it's a bit difficult to say at this moment in time," he said. "I have to be clear about everyone's fitness before I start thinking about the team. Seven players played 90 minutes for their respective countries, so it's difficult to assess where I am.
"We're going to have to wait until tomorrow to get a real idea of how they are. Some have come back with knocks, some have travelled far distances like Ji-sung Park to Korea and back, so hopefully by Sunday we'll have a team we want."
Wayne Rooney and Patrice Evra are suspended for Sunday's match after picking up five bookings each, while Brazilian playmaker Elano and Croatian defender Vedran Corluka are also banned for City.
I like the sound of this guy, he got moved up to the first team after the Saudi Arabia trip. Haven't seen much apart from when he missed a penalty in the Asia trip.

2-0 Ronaldo and Scholes with the goals

1-1 for me with someone getting sent off. Seeing as Neville is modelling the kit for the derby, does that mean he's gonna start?

No, he is our club Captain so he does all the shoots. He isn't even in the squad i don't think. I too can see somebody getting sent off

Can't be any worse than Louis Saha, surely? I reckon he'll be about as good as Dong Fangzhuo, and will end up having a career at someone like Huddersfield. I'd be very surprised if he gets a start against City though.

Did anybody know that we signed this guy in January,

I think as Corluka is suspened, and they have that Onuha whatever bloke in I think he may play Ronnie there just to see if he can rape him for 90 minutes (and outplay him at football too ;))

How the fuck are we two down?
Nice touch by the City fans, shows they're not all dicks.
Hamann is a dirty cunt and should have been sent off.
Howard Webb obviously liked the odds William Hill were offering on a City win.
That is all for now.
