Yep, especially that Boro usually cause United trouble when they're playing at home.
Keyser Soze
05-04-2008, 19:36
Knowing you lot at the moment though, you'll probably breeze through them 4-0. I don't know, this United side is unpredictable - but they don't look like slipping too much tbh.
vanNistelrooy
05-04-2008, 19:41
As long as they don't go 1-0 up. They usually make it difficult for us when they do.
Hopefully Silvestre comes in for Vidic, or Brown moves to CB with Hargreaves filling in at RB.
Keyser Soze
05-04-2008, 19:44
O'Shea looked perfectly capable at CB to be fair though. I'd have him in the defence - either at RB (with Brown in the centre) or CB.
skullverine
05-04-2008, 19:46
Not too sure about Silvestre though. I don't think that he can last 90 min at the moment.
We would probably see Pique coming in for Vidic.
vanNistelrooy
05-04-2008, 19:49
I'm still not 100% confident with O'Shea. Before he got injured, Silvestre was impressing me.
My god anyone but Pique.
I too am slighty concerned against Boro.
I wouldn't mind seeing the back 4 we played for the majority of the match
My god anyone but Pique.
Pique isn't as bad as you think, he's had some good performances this season.

Champions League, Roma being one of them. He's got talent and he's proved he can play at the top level.
We always have a tough game against Boro, from the past 7 games against them, think we've won 3, they've won 3 and 1 has been a draw so it just shows how tight it history says it should be. However I've just got a funny feeling that we'll play them off the park, and cruise to a 3-1 victory.
I'm always scared when we play Boro, though like Tom, I think we'll win 3-1.
Edit: Why isn't Gerrard on the diving list? Oh I forgot, English players don't dive.
lol, just seen it Jin.

Ronaldo stepover, one notes, has evolved way beyond its original form. It's now only a couple of hand movements short of a charleston. Soon, one assumes, it will include elements of the cha-cha, the Watusi and the Funky Gibbon.

Park was awesome when he came on.
If Rio can make it for the Arsenal game, I think we can say they are officially off the pace.
Chelski away to Everton two days after their CL game could prove vital.
If Rio isn't fit for Sunday, Adebayor could have a field day.
I think Everton is our only hope of Chelsea dropping points before playing us.

Yeah same here. And I feel kind of greedy thinking like that, but with them being in the lead and having that chance at the end, I can't help but feel a bit disappointed. Ah well, all I wanted this morning was them to drop at least two points, so I should just be grateful.

Tevez didn't do too bad, I didn't understand why he got subbed off but glad he did Park was superb.
Newcastle almost got a point at SB earlier in the season (and should have but for the most blatent offside goal of the season), so I understand your point. Just depends if we both get through to the CL semis, which we probably will, as we'll have to rotate players to keep everyone fresh as can be.

I think, that because we have the 2 goal lead and we have such a big game at the weekend, Ronaldo and Scholes will be rested, normally i'd say Rooney aswell but he is hardly ever rested, i also chose Pique ahead of O' Shea because Fergie was saying that he thought Pique was brilliant at the weekend, which was news to me i must say.

my reasoning would be that Arsene would have to rest players for this weekend after the gruelling schedule...flamini injured is a bonus. And that i really do not want liverpudlians to assume this sort of god given right to 'dominate' Europe by featuring in potentially a 3rd final in 4 seasons, when they have been poor in the league.
Yeah those clashes are dull but i think Cousin Avvy's men now has enough bollocks about them to finish of liverpool should they turn up at the bridge playing like they did for the first 20 minutes yesterday.
EDIT:
Papers: Vucinic warns Ron
09/04/2008 10:44
We’ll kick you out of it, Ron
Angry Roma will target Cristiano Ronaldo tonight for his first-leg showboating. The Italian club want revenge after Ronaldo helped Manchester United to a 2-0 win in Rome last week. Striker Mirko Vucinic rapped: “He can obviously dribble but he takes it too far and we have told him that.” Ronaldo put United in the driving seat for tonight’s Champions League quarter-final return at Old Trafford. But Vucinic said: “We have to be angry after what happened last week. If we didn’t come here feeling angry it would be a waste of time.”
Sports Reporter, The Sun
Meanwhile, the Daily Mirror reports how the Ronaldo debate took an interesting turn yesterday when Roma manager Luciano Spalletti issued an apology to the Reds winger for comments made by his player David Pizarro following the first leg.
The same newspaper publishes Sir Alex Ferguson’s praise of Ronaldo’s recent “outstanding” form and the manager's dismissal of the idea that Paul Scholes might be handed the captain's armband tonight to mark his 100th European game.
fuck off vucinic...
I don't see how they could use such a title, when it has no quotes of Vucinic saying these things.

united occasionally play good football. 90% of the time they get played off the pitch by everyone and then out of nowhere ronaldo will score from 5 yards out or a set piece (most of his goals) and then everyone will say how well they've done even though they have been appalingly poor the whole game. example everytime they have played liverpool liverpool have been by far the better team in every sence and have tonnes more chances but then man utd score a tevez 1 yarder and it sickens me to the bone that the team that will win the league hardly ever dominates a game or deserves to win. also against roma away man utd got absolutly played off the park and had next to nothing the hole game and they won 2-0 simply cos roma didnt take their chances and then the peeps have the nerve to say just cos man utd hung on by the skin of their teet the hole game they deserved to win it.

Interesting team selection. In my opinion, it sends out a message that Ferguson thinks the tie is dead.
Van der Sar
Brown
Piqué
Ferdinand
Silvestre
Anderson
Hargreaves
Carrick
Park
Giggs
Tévez
I'm suprised Silvestre is playing but then again Evra is one yellow card away from a supension so I can understand why he isn't risked for tonight.

Regarding the penalty: is it me or did Brown not touch the ball? Mancini took it away from him a split-second before. I knew De Rossi was going to miss. Too often does he go from superb play to a ridiculous moment...would have him at Milan any day though. Thought he might lose his cool after that and elbow someone in the face again.
Roma are playing too much one-touch in attack which is nice to watch but isn't going to get them goals.
It looked to me as if Brown played Mancini's foot on to the ball, rather than actually winning it, so I can see why the referee gave it. No excuse for that dive by Mancini though; it was shocking. Nearly as bad as the penalty.

Spanish reports claim Real Madrid have decided to offer Manchester United a world-record £100million for Cristiano Ronaldo.
It is believed Real told United last summer they would pay up to 120million euros for the Portuguese star.
The Red Devils made it quite clear they had no plans to sell Ronaldo - but the wonderful form of player, which has seen him score nearly 40 goals this season, will prompt a new bid.
Real have made little secret of their desire to lure Ronaldo to the Spanish capital and now La Sexta is claiming that an incredible £100million bid is imminent.
La Sexta - who have the rights to La Liga television coverage in Spain, are said to have close ties with high-ranking Real officials, from where the news on the possible bid have emanated.
However, it is also being reported that despite the huge bid, Real are not expecting United to accept the deal.
The current world record for a footballer is already held by Real, after they £46million to Juventus for Zinedine Zidane in 2001.
Recent speculation intensified after it was reported in Spain that Real's sporting director Predrag Mijatovic met with Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes in London and Rome in recent weeks.

Hargreaves was brilliant today, did he get Man of the Match?
Dunno, but his workrate and quality of passing/crossing was the best i've seen from him. He was immense last night.
Credit must also go to Park & Tevez for tireless running and Silvestre for looking solid on his return (i was glad to see see him at LB though and not CB). Lovely passing move, great cross and sublime header to seal a good win. Who said we can't win without Ronny & Rooney? Must admit that Roma were sub-par defensively though...
Useless twat award goes to Anderson who did fuck all apart from one shot. I don't think i've seen anyone that lazy at OT since Veron.
Nice to see Neville back on the pitch, albeit for only 10 mins. Good respose from the crowd too.

That's harsh, considering how much he normally does for the team, though he could still be doing a bit more if he tried.

I hadn't really thought about it, though that was probably because I'd forgotten that he was on the pitch. Hargreaves was very impressive last night and I thought Silvestre looked excellent for a player who hasn't played first team for a long time. I've not always been a big fan of Silvestre, but when he's at left-back he tends to play well (compared to his performances at centre back.) It's great to have him back as we've been without a left-footed left-back to provide cover for Evra.
By the way, how great has Van Der Sar been for us? His decision making and kicking is probably the best I've ever seen from a keeper. He's not a bad shot stopper either.
Predictions for Arsenal on the weekend? I wouldn't be surprised if us and Chelsea both dropped points.

I personally think Hargreaves should be first team instead of Carrick. Carrick does bugger all despite what people say and Hargreaves works his socks off for the team and has great delivery from set pieces and crosses.
I think we'll draw with Arsenal and Chelsea will win. It's squeeky bum time! I still think we'll win the league though. Chelsea will drop points somewhere but it's unlikely to be Wigan at home, as much as I love the pie-eaters. I actually think we'll beat them at home, we'll be up for it, we're good at smashing records (Arsenal unbeaten run), Chelsea will get nervous and Grant will fuck something up.
Phatmann
10-04-2008, 12:22
I think you're being a little harsh on Carrick there. His passing is usually excellent and he works hard for the team. Before last night I hadn't been too impressed with Hargreaves' recent performances and I can't agree that Hargreaves should start ahead of Carrick. Some games Hargreaves looks a world class defensive midfielder, and on other occasions looks like a headless chicken. Anyway, I think there's a place for both in the first team with a midfield trio of Carrick, Scholes and Hargreaves, with Rooney, Ronaldo and Tevez up top.
Park has been class in the past few games, he's really stepped up. Silvestre looked very good considering his injury and I would go with him at centre-back on the weekend if Vidic isn't playing.
How great was it to see Neville back.
EDIT: I'm with Phat here, Hargreaves had a month earlier in the season where he looked like the best player on the park most matches but he has been pretty hit and miss the rest of the season, mainly down to small injuries.

Easily done eh! Good performance marking the centre circle though...

Should beat Arsenal 2-1. Going for Adebayor or Diaby to open the scoring, Ronaldo equaliser just before half time, with Ronaldo scoring from a dubious pen late in the second half.
Edit: As per my earlier post, Silvestre LB only. His heading is not 100%. Pique, O'Shea, Brown - in that order.
As for Chelskum... can't see the piemen getting close. Easy win.
I would not be happy to have Silvestre at centre-back. I'd probably prefer Brown there to be honest.
The only reason I would go with Silvestre is because he has more experience, which could help against Adebayor. I really don't care though as there is barely any difference between the two, I think Pique would get destroyed by Adebayor though.

I agree that Pique would be the wrong choice against Arsenal, but I have a bad feeling that Fergie will pick him as he won't want to rush Silvestre back and will give him the odd start here and there for the rest of the season. I also can't see Neville starting, and Brown will most likely stay at right back. So the centre-back partnership will most probably be either Ferdinand-Pique or Ferdinand-O'Shea. :(
O'Shea I wouldn't mind as he likes a battle but I fear the Pique vs Adebayor would be like Senderos vs Drogba all over again.
Tbh I would be satisfied with a defence of,
Brown, Rio, Silvestre/O'Shea, Evra. Would be great if Vidic was fit to play though.

How are people feeling towards the game as we draw closer? I honestly do not have a clue which way the match will go, so another draw is my first thoughts. I want Ronaldo to bring his A game, but if anyone does it's more likely to be Rooney. We pretty much NEED to win this.
Phatmann
13-04-2008, 01:18
It's one of the few times that I'm not that nervous before a match with Arsenal, and that worries me. The trouble is that a draw isn't really good enough as it'll mean we have to basically win every other match, including Chelsea away. I'm hoping that the absence of Flamini will give us the edge, but if Silvestre starts at centre back, I can see a silly mistake costing us the game. Draw is what I say, but that's more because I can't decide rather than I think the match will finish 0-0, 1-1, etc.
I'm pretty much the same as Phat, I'm (weirdly) quite confident. I feel we might just have the edge as they have Flamini out and even though we are missing Vidic, Adebayor isn't playing at his best at the moment. But even so it could quite easily go either way.
I would love to see this team out tomorrow as a 4-4-2,
VDS
Brown
Rio
Silvestre
Evra
Ronaldo
Scholes
Carrick
Nani
Tevez
Rooney
But I'm expecting 4-5-1/4-3-3 with Rooney, Ronaldo and Giggs (I would rather it was Nani) switching as the front three. If we're going to play that formation I would rather go with Carrick, Scholes and Hargreaves and give Nani, Ronaldo and Rooney freedom to do what they do best.
Like I said though I'm expecting Giggs to play even though he has not been up to much recently. If I was pushed to predict a result I would go with a 2-1 win for us.
EDIT: Just read that Tevez is unlikely to play as he is knackered and Hargreaves might be having an operation on his knee in the summer to try and sort out the problem he has had with it for the past few seasons.

He can hardly be expected to dribble through defenses every week, especially Arsenals. True sometimes he tried and failed but he looked threatening when he could run at them. I wish people would leave off him not being a big game player, he plays in a way that can't be replicated in this kind of game but as he showed against Roma he can deliver when it matters.
No-one expects him to, but he was invisible once again - apart from his amazing step-overs in the the corner on the 94th minute (which by the way, I'd have liked Hoyte to take a chunk out of him then). Rooney's not expected to "dribble through defenses every week", but he still consistently delivers against the big boys in the Premiership.
And if Zissou is insinuating that Lamps isn't a big-game player, then he's obviously letting his hate for Chelsea get in the way of common sense/knowledge. Ah well, ignorance is bliss eh?

T'is true. I don't expect him to be fantastic every week (that would be unrealistic and stupid), but he so rarely turns up when the real heat is on (bar that particular game where Roma forgot to defend).

For someone who plays in a position where you see the ball as much as Lampard does, he fails to impress me in the big games. And like Ronnie, needs a penalty or a tap in to become noticed.
I'm just getting slightly fed up with people picking on the one player all the time. Other players today didn't turn up but they don't get a mention. Gallas for example, has been poor this season (well at least the second half of it) but people still hail him as a "class defender". Same goes for Toure, who has gone down hill.

Rooney's a different type of player to Ronaldo and as much as I love him he doesn't always deliver the goals (like Ronaldo does) instead he delivers attacking threat, teamwork, great passing etc. That's not what Ronnie is about so it's not a comparision. We don't need two rooneys... (although on second thought that would be awesome) By the way, that penalty was an awesome one under pressure.

I don't quite understand what Lehmann was complaining about when the ref said it had to be retaken? :erm:

Ye hes been with the team for his whole carear he deserves to be played.
So we should still be playing Phil Neville and Nicky Butt? No thanks. Brown is decent but not as good as the rest of the team. I'd keep him but just cos he's been knocking around a while doesn't give him a god given right to play. Would you ship Rooney and Ronaldo out for not being here their whole career?

Ferdinand was fucking brilliant again, apart from leaving the ball for Adebayor mind.
I thought Scholes had a very off game, constantly giving the ball away which isn't like him at all, some good came out of that though as Anderson was terrific when he came on.
VDS was great again today, the two best saves were from our own defenders efforts though
Rooney is just amazing, never stopped running and working the defenders, gutted he didn't score though.
Zizzou, Almunia injured his wrist apparently.

Sorry, it's naive of me to think the "best player of the world" should show up in big games.

Way to COMPLETELY miss the point. Although I agree, the penalty was beautiful.

Of course it is unfair to single out Ronaldo for criticism, but a player with his capacities should turn up once in a while in the big games. I would agree that all the other games are just as important if we are talking about the league but it would be a testament to his abilities. He can do better, if he's any kind of sportsman he knows it.
Van Persie didn't turn up either.
On the other hand Ferdinand was excellent and Van der Sar had some good saves. He'll win us the title this summer

Aluminium had a knock and dented.

It'll probably depend on the European Championships. If Torres gets Spain far he'll probably take it, although Ronaldo will obviously have an advantage before the tournament as he's score more.

Still, if he's turning up in 70-75% of our games this season I'm not going to argue. Think about other players in his position and think how well they do over the season, let alone in big games?
Like I've said a lot lately, Rio has improved so so much. Seems to have got rid of that complacency. Edwin, well. He's saved us so many points since he joined the club, it's funny.

Stop using that argument. Other players in his position aren't being hailed the best in the world. No-one's debating that he's not class, I just find it hard to swallow the best player in the world rarely shows up to big games.

The thing is Ronaldo not turning up in big games has been something that's being thrown around since he joined, way before he was hailed as "world class".
At the end of the day he scored one and helped his team to a 2-1 win, I'm not gonna argue with that.
I couldn't give a shit if he's the best player in the world. Our record against the big teams is amazing so if he doesn't turn up we must be at our best when playing with 10 players. It's pretty blatent he gets targeted by the big teams and while they do that, it gives the rest of the team more space, him just being there causes problems for the opposition.
He's playing for Man Utd and I wouldn't swap him for any other player on the planet, that's all I care about.

How comes Ronaldo was only on the pitch for the penalty? Didn't see him much before and after it. :erm: Strange.
ah the jokes are even more subtle...my answer would probably be burnout after 38 goals in the season..
EDIT: and the title is 'Best player in the world' over 12 months..not just the odd handful of games against big teams. And i beleive its also fair to say the amount of attention the defence gives him is a testament to his attacking threat.
Ronaldo will have his chance to really show his worth, in the Camp Nou.
Gallas for example, has been poor this season (well at least the second half of it) but people still hail him as a "class defender".
I think Gallas more than proved he is a class defender, when he was forced to play as left back, and managed to excel in that position, when he's not even a lefty.

Of course he is a good defender. A short-term dip in form doesn't suddenly make him anything less.
Hargreaves's free kick was stunning, no keeper would've saved that imo. Hopefully he gets a run of starts come the end of the season, he has been left on the bench too many times for my liking.
Evra also impressed me today, as always his attacking play was good but he also defended well. We need the same performance against Barca, he's our hope of stopping Messi.

Unusually for me yes, i am scared, despite the shit run your on and the injuries you have and have had, it is just like us to fuck up.
We did it last year against Milan, also we are always the team who players find form against, like Alves for Boro the other week and i can see Henry doing the same.

Bit disrespectful.
Evra he has been one of the most consistant performers this season, his position is guaranteed every game. I can remember worrying when Heinze left, but now I realise it was a great move.
I see Rio, Vidic, VDS, Ronaldo, Scholes, Rooney and Evra as the players who are definitely in the starting eleven of our best side, at the moment we have the right back, centre midfield, left midfield and striker positions up for grabs. Hopefully Neville will make the right back position his own again, Hargreaves and Carrick can battle it out for the other centre midfield position, Nani should be taking over from Giggs in the next season or so and Tevez is there for the striker but I would like to see another come in and Saha leave.

Certainly is. Okay, I can understand his dissapontment, but hey, it happens.
On the whole we were lucky. Had Adebayor actaully managed to make good contact with any of his efforts (barring the use of his arm which was certainly a good contact!!) then I think the game would've been over by half time. As it was, it was a better 2nd half with a much improved performance by Anderson after last weeks debacle.
Apart from the pen & a little showboating at the end Ronaldo was nigh on useless. Hargreves on the other hand was a monster again! Another well taken free kick.
Looking forward to the game at Sandford Bridge now, especially if the title is sealed there.
As for Barca... well, gonna be tough, especially the first leg. Got my fingers crossed that with Puyol missing we should be good enough to get at least one away goal.
