if tevez is the mystery solitary signing that sir alex harped about then hes not that mysterious.

Gill said the Tevez deal won't be completed until after the transfer window has closed. So I doubt it is.

I saw this on ManUtd.com,

Sir Alex Ferguson has earmarked a host of his promising youngsters as future Old Trafford stars and hopes to see them make significant progress over the coming season.

A number of the young players have impressed during United's pre-season trip to South Africa with Chris Eagles, Lee Martin, Tom Cleverley and Fraizer Campbell all finding the net.

Assured displays from Brazilian midfielder Rodrigo Possebon and Belfast-born defender Craig Cathcart during Saturday's Vodacom Challenge final victory have given Sir Alex further cause for optimism.

"They are all at a good age in terms of us judging them," he said. "Most of them have been out on loan and done well.

"Jonny Evans had a good spell at Sunderland and was instrumental in them staying up. Campbell was instrumental in bringing Hull up.

"Lee Martin has been unfortunate with injuries, but he showed what he can do by setting up the first goal [against the Kaizer Chiefs]. He has potential.

"Cathcart is looking much stronger and the intention is to put him out on loan this season. Possebon will stay as he has potential for first team football, while Cleverley is just a young lad and has time on his side. All the young players have good potential."

I hope to see some more of Possebon tonight against Pompey as he looked good in spells yesterday. I guess Evans will just take Pique's place in the squad and I think Campbell will be given a first team spot too but will be behind Tevez, Rooney, New Signing?, Saha? (if fit) in the pecking order.

Didn't realise we were playing Pompey tonight. I'm guessing most of the players who started yesterday won't be starting today? although I saw on the news that Rooney will be playing despite having a dead leg.

Possebon looked ok; seemed to be playing quite deep at times but he rarely gave the ball away which is good. Hopefully we'll see more of him tonight as that was the first time I've ever seen him. By the way, is the match gonna be on setanta or sky sports at all?

Nope, it only on MUTV. I will be looking for a stream as I don't have the channel. Neville, Silvestre, Scholes and Tevez have all been confirmed to be starting by Fergie. Danny Simpson really impressed me yesterday, I would like to see him loaned out to a Premiership side to see how he can do.

I'll probably be picking up the home shirt since we're keeping it for next season, plus I haven't got any recent shirts. I'll be getting it with the Moscow Final embroidary in the chest centre with Giggs 11 on the back.

As for Berbatov, I honestly can't see us getting him anytime soon, possibly in the January market since Spurs have already sold Keane.

Players such as Scholes, Giggs, Neville etc don't have much left in their careers so it's the perfect time to pay tribute to them I reckon instead of getting the likes of Ronaldo etc.

I was in the South Stand too, there was even a bit of singing in the South Stand which was great, surprising too but I guess when one person starts, everyone does. :D

Atmosphere was decent, especially for a pre-season friendly/testimonial. Although to be fair, it didn't seem like a friendly at all, both teams were really going at it. Tevez could have probably walked for grabbing the Espanyol player's neck it looked like. As for Scholesy, well he was just downright hilarious the whole game, the amount of trademark tackles he put in, he should have been sent off 2 or maybe even 3 times over. :chanlaugh:

Was quite emotional when everyone was singing "Ole" etc though, knowing that it will be his last ever appearance in a red shirt. Everyone was obviously prepared for it, and expected it, but you can't really prepare how you will feel on the day. Just watched a video of Ole braking down in an interview, and it's quite sad to watch in a way, really hits home that his time at the club as a player is over.

Ole Interview (Norweigen) (http://tv2sporten.no/fotball/england/article2108212.ece)

As for the performances, I was definetely impressed with Vidic who won every single header he went for again, looked as solid as he ever has. Nani looked like his confidence is growing and he was constantly causing trouble down the flank, although he delayed his cross a few times which was a bit annoying at times. I was liking the look of Frazier Campbell when he came on mind, very aggressive and was willing to prove himself, even scoring an excellent goal thanks to a beautifully weighted pass from Giggsy. Ole came on to a crazy reception as you'd expect, and done alright, had 2 cracking shots with his left foot, if only the Espanyol keeper read the script properly, would have been very fitting if they had went in. Either way it was just a joy to see Ole on the pitch again with a smile on his face.

Ole was the perfect professional, a gentleman and he knew the importance of this club, and never put himself above the club. Sitting on the bench for so long would infuriate many players, especially of his class, but he loved the club which is rare with footballers nowdays and his emotions will always show that. Ole Gunnar Solksjaer can't even be classed as a "footballer" to be fair, he can only be classed as a legend.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is set to miss the start of the Premier League season on 17 August after picking up a virus.

The 22-year-old contracted the mystery virus on United's pre-season tour of Nigeria and has not trained since.

"I doubt Wayne will be fit for the start of the season," said United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

"It's a virus he picked up in Nigeria and it's not a nice one. He's not been back in training yet."

Ferguson revealed Rooney's illness was diagnosed by the club's own laboratory.

Honestly don't think Gibson is at the right level yet after seeing him at Ole's testimonial. He didn't really do anything significant and he looked to be wandering a lot of the game, there were a few moments where he was on the Left side despite playing Right-Mid. Just wondering, since we had a similar situation with Adebayor. Do you think Ronaldo deserves to be accepted back in the team so easily? Reckon Ronaldo will get a frosty reception if he returns?

Question every United fan has been wondering themselves. To be honest, every United fan I know has said they'll refuse to sing "Viva Ronaldo" anymore and I feel a similar way. He doesn't deserve our energy or our breath at the moment from the way he has acted. Although I do think because this was all done in public, the media have overhyped it to the point of seriously influencing everyone's opinions on the matter. Ronaldo won't be available to play for about another month as he's injured so maybe that will give him a chance to "ease" back into the team.

I honestly don't know how we'll all react, there will obviously be some who will boo him, and I imagine a small crowd may still cheer him. We'll just have to wait and see. I don't think I can bring myself to cheer him anymore though, not sure if I'd waste my time booing him either, would rather use that energy to sing for players.

I see Fergie's said we may not buy anyone in the transfer window after all. It's hardly a shock, but I am disappointed there won't be at least 1 new fresh face we can get all excited about. We don't need to spend cash unnecessarily, but we've still not acquired the 'missing link' in our attack; the 20 goals a season striker. I can't say I've seen the lad play a great deal, but I can't believe for one minute that Campbell could fill this role. And if you think we'll have a strikeforce of Tevez/Campbell with none on the bench at the season opener, it is an area that needs addressing.

Unless there's still faith in Dong :|

Hunter
06-08-2008, 21:38
Giggs has had more than enough experience playing the role just behind the striker. He even did so in the Ole testimonial which leads me to believe that Fergie is preparing him to play in that position at the start of the season. We could definetely get away with playing Tevez up top with Giggs sitting off him, or if that fails, the simple 4-5-1 with attacking wingers will surely prove just as penetrating.

I'm by no means stating that we should chuck Campbell in at the deep end, I said I believe he should get his game in the charity shield. However he's good enough to play some part in this season, and now would be the perfect opportunity for him since we have several strikers injured.

Sir Alex Ferguson has been accused of lying over Wayne Rooney's mystery illness.

The Manchester United striker has been ruled out of the opening matches of the new season with a virus that Ferguson claimed had been contracted during the club's brief trip to Nigeria two weeks ago.

"It's a virus he's picked up in Nigeria, I believe, and it's not a nice one," Ferguson told reporters on Tuesday.

But Ferguson's comments have sparked outrage in the country, with Bassey Ndem, an organiser of the tour, telling The Sun: "They did not catch it in Nigeria.

"It's a lie from the pit of hell and it's sad someone had to go to that length to degrade Nigeria. Rooney only sat in his hotel room. He was in Nigeria for less than 24 hours."

United have yet to release any details about Rooney's illness, other than insisting the forward was not suffering from malaria.

In his press conference, Ferguson claimed that the only medication the United party took before the trip were anti-malaria tablets, although it has since been reported that they were also given injections for yellow fever and hepatitis.

When he's got his head up Campbell can finish, given adequate chance he could be a 20-goal-a-season man.

Former Manchester United starlet Ben Collett has been awarded over £4million in compensation after a tackle ended his career.

The High Court in London awarded the 23-year-old the sum which took into account his possible future earnings.

Collett suffered a broken leg as an 18-year-old during a reserve match with Middlesbrough in May 2003 after a tackle from Boro's Gary Smith.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson gave evidence in the case confirming he could have made it at the top level in the sport.

"I thought the boy showed fantastic focus, a great attitude to work hard and they are qualities to give any player an outstanding chance in the game," he said.

Collett would have been offered a professional contract in July 2003 after starring in United's youth side and the court heard the player's career earnings could have exceeded £16million at an average of £13,000 if he had played until he was 35.

Mrs Justice Swift confirmed the eventual figure could be more than £4.5million - which will be paid by Middlesbrough's insurers.

If we can get him cheap, we may as well since we're in the middle of a striking crisis at the moment and looks like Wayne Rooney is going to die anytime. Although I've no idea whether Henry's heart would be in it after becoming an Arsenal legend, would be like Scholes signing for Liverpool, would his heart be in it ?

Honestly though, I think we could probably sign a better suited striker, however I wouldn't say no to a cheap Henry. Frazier Campbell deserves his chance though, so now should be the perfect time for him.

Manchester United are believed to be on the brink of signing Tottenham Hotspur striker Dimitar Berbatov.

Spurs have been holding out for a fee in the region of £38million for their star striker, but it is thought they have now reached agreement with the Premier League champions on a £28million deal. Spurs are closing in on a replacement signing and have also been boosted by the form of 13-goal striker Darren Bent in pre-season.

The Bulgarian has been tracked by United for months and their conduct had angered the White Hart Lane club, who believe the Red Devils were pursuing a public transfer campaign. United were reported to the FA by Spurs but it is likely any deal would see this complaint withdrawn.

Reports suggest the 27-year-old could be a United player by the time the Premier League kicks off this weekend, with some claiming he was at United's Carrington training ground for talks on Tuesday.

Berbatov has made no secret of his desire to move to Old Trafford, something which has frustrated bosses at Spurs who felt he should have shown more loyalty, and he has been criticised for his lack of application since returning from the summer break. It will come as a second blow in a matter of weeks after Robbie Keane insisted to be given permission to move to Liverpool.

Zenit St Petersburg forward Andrei Arshavin and Spartak Moscow star Roman Pavlyuchenko both remain at the top of coach Juande Ramos' wanted list, and the sale of Berbatov could free up enough funds for the Russian strike pair to be reunited in north London. West Ham United striker Dean Ashton - reportedly told to shed pounds by England coach Fabio Capello - has also been tracked, but a move for David Villa would appear to be doomed to failure.

Berbatov has scored 27 Premier League goals in 63 starts since moving from Bayer Leverkusen but his time at the club has been dogged by transfer rumours and questions over his commitment.

United, meanwhile, have apparently failed with a bid for Valencia's attacking midfielder David Silva - according to the player's agent.

'Manchester United made an offer for David Silva, but this has been turned down by Valencia,' Julio Llorente said. 'Silva doesn't want to play in England because he is happy at Valencia.

'His family are settled and if he was to move it would only be to another Spanish club, like Real Madrid or Barcelona. David Silva will start the new season at Valencia.'

David Silva's agent has told Sky Sports News that Valencia have turned down an offer from Manchester United.

England League champions United have been linked with a £20million bid for Silva as Sir Alex Ferguson looks to add to his squad before the close of the transfer window.

Domestic rivals Liverpool have also been mooted as admirers of the Spain international, who impressed during his country's successful Euro 2008 campaign.

Reports have suggested that the winger could be sold to ease Valencia's financial problems, with Barcelona also linked with a bid.

Silva has admitted that he has 'no desire' to move to England and would prefer to join Barcelona, if he were to leave Valencia.

And, despite acknowledging United's offer, the player's agent Julio Llorente has confirmed the 22-year-old wants to stay in Spain.

"Manchester United made an offer for David Silva, but this has been turned down by Valencia," Llorente told Sky Sports News in a statement.

Quite right. I think this is a Veron/Forlan/Kleberson signing for United. Looks a great idea on paper but Berbatov is a brilliant team player and I don't rate United as a team. They rely on individuals to win games, but different types of individuals to Berbatov. He has great skill and awareness but that's only useful if he is given the ball, and Spurs were built around him whereas United will not be. He'll be good for 12 goals next season maybe, but personally I think Saha was a great option from the bench.

Spanish giants Real Madrid are believed to be set to make a €25million (£20million) offer for Ajax striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

Real manager Bernd Schuster is keen to bolster his frontline ahead of the new Primera Division season.

Holland international Huntelaar has been linked with a move away from Amsterdam ArenA, with a number of top European clubs, including Manchester United, reportedly interested in his services.

However, it appears that Real are set to attempt to land the 25-year-old after Schuster indicated to the club's hierarchy that he desires another striker in his setup.

Meanwhile, reports emanating from the Spanish press have suggested Chelsea target Robinho has been told he will not be leaving Bernabeu this summer.

It is claimed that Robinho would consider a transfer to Stamford Bridge but Real president Ramon Calderon has informed the Brazilian that the club have no intention of selling.

Rooney ready for United return

Manchester United have been boosted by the news that Wayne Rooney is fit for the start of the England League season.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has declared the striker ready for Sunday's Old Trafford curtain-raiser with Newcastle, live on Sky Sports 1.

The England international missed the last two weeks of United's pre-season preparations for the defence of their top-flight crown after picking up a virus on the club's tour of Africa.

However, Ferguson now looks set to name Rooney, who has returned to training with the Red Devils since last week's Community Shield victory over Portsmouth, in his squad for the visit of Newcastle.

"Wayne is fit to play on Sunday," said Ferguson.

http://img.skysports.com/08/07/218x298/Rooney-Wayne2_1046806.jpg

"He has trained all week. We took him down to the Community Shield last Sunday and he did some work for us then.

"From then on he has been progressing really well."

However, Ferguson remains tight-lipped over reports that United are on the verge of completing a £25million move for Dimitar Berbatov.

Rumour is rife that the Tottenham star travelled to United's training ground on Friday to undergo a medical.

But, when asked about Berbatov, Ferguson has declined to comment, saying: "I have nothing to say, absolutely nothing at all."

Meh, not gonna fret too much as similar thing happened last year and we coped. Just unfortunate against a team we should have pasted. That ratfaced fella for them looks decent, works well for the team.

Hopefully Tevez won't be missing for too long, and/or we sign Berbatov soon as Rooney needs a quality striker up with him, not someone who has potential.

Agreed. Frustrated at the result but looking at the preseason results, it is hardly surprising.

Been to the game today a freebie so i wasnt turning it down. United a lacking something maybe its Ronaldo, Nani, Tevez or a striker but you the european champions cant afford to play Fletcher but in fairness he playerd well. O'Shea is total shit along with Fletcher. Campbell looks like one for the future. Jonas Gutierrez and Collocini are good buys IMO. Nothing but a scout mission for my today :ninja:.

vanNistelrooy
17-08-2008, 19:54
Campbell does look like he could be good, but we should have another class striker we can play ahead of him.

Hopefully SAF pulls his finger out and signs someone pronto.

Carrick going off was a blow to us. We never really got going from that point and if we had we would have probably run out convincing winners.

Like I said, hardly worth getting upset about as it's still a better start than last season.

Berba confirms United 'dream'

Tottenham star Dimitar Berbatov has confirmed that joining Manchester United is his 'dream'.

Sir Alex Ferguson is keen on landing the Bulgarian striker and has been chasing him for most of the summer, but as yet no deal has been agreed between the two clubs.

Tottenham boss Juande Ramos left Berbatov on the bench for their opening day defeat at Middlesbrough, and there was a distinctly mixed reaction from the travelling support when Ramos brought him on.

Now Berbatov has admitted that moving to Old Trafford would be a 'dream' move for him.

"I'm now in Tottenham but no one can disagree with me wanting to follow my dream," said Berbatov - who insisted he was not annoyed at being left out of Spurs' starting line-up at the weekend.

"I'm not angry about the decision of Juande Ramos to name me as a substitute. I'm not crying.

"I only show my emotions to my close friends and family.

"But if I was laughing when I was on the bench, people would say I was an idiot.

"I noticed that Eric Cantona never smiled but I don't know if anyone ever asked him why he didn't look happier."

Berba's agent Emil Dantchev admitted he was hopeful a deal could be struck this week.

"We have two weeks until the end of the transfer window. I think this will be the most important week," he said.

Campbell looked canny today chaps, very dangerous at times. Spiderman was immense, fuck me, what a guy, not just the pace and flair but the work-rate as well, what a debut that was.

Yes, Campbell looks like a talented player. But I think he really needs to 'bulk up', he really couldn't keep up with the pressure applied by Newcastle defenders. The same goes for Possebon, who had clearly stayed away from any form of physical challenge, he used his pace and technique instead.

Spiderman?! Fuck me, the man was awesome last night! Incredible work ethics, he was all over the pitch. He easily outpaced Rooney, as well as some other United players.

I think Rooney had a decent game, could have been better but he really wasn't bad. I felt his shooting was off at times.:erm:

On the whole, I'm not that disappointed, we had to deal with a few injuries and Newcastle came to get a result and that they did. ;)

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has confirmed Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been approached as the man to coach an all-British football team at the 2012 Olympics.

With England's capital London staging the prestigious Games in four years' time, their organising committee are keen for the host nation to have a presence in the football competition.

Brown has confirmed talks are underway to discuss the possibility of a Great Britain football team in 2012, which would be the first time a composite British squad will have entered the Games since 1960, with possibly Sir Alex at the helm.
Informal talks

Lord Sebastian Coe has held informal talks with Ferguson over the role, although Brown has confirmed an official approach would need to be made should the GB football team be given the green light.

Premier Leaguer duties are unlikely to be an obstacle for Ferguson as he is widely expected to retire as boss at Old Trafford at the end of this season or the next - a minimum of two years before the tournament.

"When the Olympics are held in Britain and there's a football tournament where the final is going to be in Britain they want us to have a team in the competition," Brown told Sky Sports News.

"At the moment in Beijing we don't have a team. No men's team and no women's team. When it comes to London I think it's important that there is a team.

Talks with Fifa

"So I've been talking to Fifa, The Football Association and Sepp Blatter and he's going to try and make it possible for us to have a team at the Olympics.

"Then we'll talk to the other football associations and we'll see who wants to be part of this and maybe we'll get a manager that everybody is happy with.

"I know Sir Alex Ferguson has been approached by Seb Coe. These are things that are possible. Alex Ferguson has got to be formally approached of course.
