So then i will kick us off, what do you guys reckon to our CL draw?

I reckon we should beat porto and i remember when we played them a few years back in the QF (4-0) :D

Porto have got some good players (Deco, Derlei, Benny McCarthy), Man Utd should beat them but they shouldn't be underestimated.

gotta agree with you there they have some good individuals and should not be under estimated but utd should really beat them

Last time Man United drew Porto in the same stage of the Champions League, was a few years back and people were getting worried about them.
United won the first leg 4-0 and David May scored - celebrating like a raving madman! And the second leg was 0-0.

I think all 3 English teams will make it to the next round.

1. Roy is 78 yards away from the referee at Old Trafford and Gary is 65 yards away. If Roy can run at 21mph and Gary can run at 16mph, who will be sticking their vein-bulging forehead into the hapless whistler's face first, assuming Roy does not stop to stamp on an opponent on his way.

2. If one minute of time is taken up in a game for substitutions and one minute for injuries, how much injury time will be added on by the referee if Man Utd are losing at home?

3. Ryan is a Welshman. Express, as a percentage, the number of internationals he has missed on a Wednesday evening compared to the miraculous recoveries he made for the following Saturday.

4. Manchester United are one of the giants of world club football. How many more European Cup Finals have they appeared in than Steaua Bucharest?
(For one extra mark; How many more than Reims?)

4a. How many more times have Manchester United won the European Cup than Nottingham Forest?

5. Phil Neville has 30 international caps. If you take away the number of appearances when he was the only adult male in England who could just about kick the ball with his left foot, how many are left?

6. You are the referee at Old Trafford. How near to a visiting defender does a tumbling Ruud van Nistelrooy have to be to earn a penalty if he goes down in the box? (Note: Round your answers down to the nearest 20
yards.)

6a. Probability. Express the statistical probability of visitors to Old Trafford
being awarded a penalty.
Compare this with the probability of opponents of Manchester United being awarded a penalty home or away, and then discuss if a penalty awarded to Manchester United would be awarded to their opponents in identical circumstances.

7. Mark "The Red" lives in Guildford. How much does it cost for him and his two sons to travel to the Theatre of Silence every other weekend, including limited edition matchday programme, a few drinks and prawn sandwiches all round? How much could he save per week if he watched his local team instead?
(Note: Round your answers down to the nearest thousand pounds).

8. Alex had a hotel room booked in Glasgow for the Champions League Final. How much money did he lose when cancelling his reservation?

9. Ruud is 6ft tall and very strong and fast. How much pressure need be applied to make him tumble over in the opponents penalty area? (Note: Answers must be in lbs per square inch. However, answers such as, 'However much pressure is applied by Ferguson to referees' are accepted.)

10. Alex has won it 1 time, Bob has won it 3. Alex has one, Bob does not. What am talking about? Explain your answer (because nobody else can).

11. Juan is a very lazy boy and often goes missing.
Alex is very cross and wants to sells him. If Juan cost £28m to buy, how much do you think Alex sold him for? How many pennies did Alex lose?

12. What is the total number of chickens counted before they were hatched by Manchester United and their supporters who thought Real Madrid were a pushover.

No, why would I?

I am not a glory supporter, I do not follow the team just because they are playing in the top league.

The daft thing about Man U is, the REAL Man U supporters are some of the best fans in the country. There away following backs this up. The glory hunters and prawn sandwich brigade really let the true Manure fans down.

erm its kinda hard to get to utd games, u either haved to have a season ticket, which is hard enough or be lucky enough that they haven't already sold out on match day, thats why old trafford is always packed.

c ronaldo
12-12-2003, 22:16
i try and go at least once a season, sorry if that not enough but i cant afford a season ticket and 30 odd quid a single ticket is a bit steep for me aswell but one thing i will say is ive nt missed a utd game on telly for the last 2 years, including europe and lg cup

Im not saying its not good enough, its just (and this isnt directed at you), but you often get Man U fans coming on saying "we're the best team in the world ever, such and such is class, such and such is mint, etc", when really they've never seen Manure play before in there life.

So we were sat there watching it and i ask his mate what team he supports and he says he's a utd fan so i was like fair enough, 10 minutes passes and we are still watching the game and he turns round to me and says "how many a side is this?" Thats gotta be the funniest question i have ever been asked by a fellow football fan :D

I know what you mean mate, im from dahn sarf so i quite often see this in the pubs. Best one was a bloke came up to me when we were playing leeds last season when Mikael scored and went "oh who was that who scored?" , "Silvestre" i replied "oh good im glad he scored, he's our new signing isnt he" , hes dead now..... :D

Nobody 'cept united fans quite understand exactly HOW hard it is to get tickets to OT. Assuming that we qualify for CL next season ;) i want to see my first Euro game at OT, no way will i get a ticket face value so i'll have to go to some reseller on the net and we are looking at £90 per ticket and thats before travel and beers. Thank god for pubs with dodgy foreign channels that always show Utd!

I'm not a United Fan, the Hatters are the true team. But I've got a few mates that have got season tickets so I've been to alot of games. The amount of cockney twats that are there is embarrassing, it was really bad when football was the in thing around the time united won the champions league. There was one time I was with my mate and about 30min into the game this guy behind him started to leave, and my mate and a load of other mancs just start hurling abuse at him, saying he's wasting a seat (he was a cockney) my mate says he see's him every home game and he leaves every time after about half an hour. That is what gives Man Utd a bad name, I've been to midweek european games and the atmosphere is electric (and I've seen Real Madrid v Barca at the nou camp.) brings a tear to your eye, not as good as Edgeley Park though.

So what do you mancs think of the impending doom witht the legal fight between JP and Sir A? Sounds like it is getting pretty serious and Fergie might not get a new contract....

MatPhillips
26-01-2004, 19:55
i think if J.P McManus has any business sense he will realise how bad a move getting rid of sir Alex would be. shares would plummet and it might ruin United, so his money he invested goes straight down the pan.

adams9802
26-01-2004, 19:57
But I think bussniss sense has nothing to do with this, its personal and I think JP is out for blood. He earnestly wants to destroy Fergie

MatPhillips
26-01-2004, 20:03
i know that, they have both taken personel issues to work with them, but what i'm saying is McManus should sort it outside of Manchester United, if he takes the drastic action of ousting fergie his business investment will probably cost him more than Fergie wants for the horse!

adams9802

Real, AC Milan, Chelsea, Bayer, Barca, Newcastle etc....

He's tactics are class.
Unfortunately in the market he's inconsistent.

MatPhillips
26-01-2004, 20:12
do you think so? a couple of years ago United were more attacking than Arsenal, they were like a battering ram, he's mellowed in the last 2-3 seasons and gone defensive.

Zizou_Zizi
26-01-2004, 20:15
Wonder why.

From 2001-02, the most goals scored to 2002-03, the least goals conceded. Proved quite a success tho.

On the other hand, Liverpool have turned more attacking, and this is their result.

adams9802
26-01-2004, 20:17
I would say inconsistent is a bit light. I mean he payed 19 mil for Ruud which was well worth it. But the millions that have be burned at OT are unbeliveable. I think alot of the reasons for the attack going down:

Yorke/Cole partnership went to hell
Keane has less mobility thus can't go forward very much. I mean he can still shoot and pass, but he has to get up the park to do so!
Giggs hasn't been his best in the last 1or 2
Veron the new playmaker couldn't play well enough to get into Swansea

adams9802
26-01-2004, 20:18

I know its already been brought up, but it really annoys me so I thought I'd say my bit. Our fans get so much stick for not coming from Manchester and being glory hunters and it's just so unfair. Don't people realises that your team chooses you? I'm a Manchester United fan because my mothers Irish and over there you either support United or Liverpool. I was pretty much told by my family I was supporting United by my uncles who had supported United all through their barren patch. They weren't glory hunters, and neither am I. Its so upsetting as well because Manchester United means so much to me. I always watch United on the tele even if it means not going out that day, and I would travel to every home game if I could (and I live in crappy London) but I just cant get tickets, and even if I could, I wouldn't be able to afford them, and I know that theres so many United fans who would travel even further to see United play. I know all about the history of United and then all I get is bloody goonners coming up to me giving me abuse when they don't know anything about their club.

I agree that there is a lot of so called United supporters who don't know a thing about United and just support them as an easy option, and they give the rest of us a bad name. All I can say is that I was born a Red and I will DIE a Red, even if we never see another bit of silverware for 100 years (god forbid!)

Far too many supporters have absolutely no clue as to what constitutes supporting a club for a reason. Take my friends for example, one supports Man U because his Dad went to college there. Now correct me if I am wrong, but that is not a reason, it's an excuse. Or, another friend who supports Liverpool because his cousin does. Now to me it makes no sense whatsoever to say that. Now my point is, it's very very common in Man U fans for these excuses to be used for supporting a team. It's why I dislike Man U intensely.

And trust me, I am a born and bred Gooner, it will never change. ;)

Ray_H
31-01-2004, 04:23
Yeah and thats great, you were born a bred a gooner, I was born a bred a red devil. Aliright I'm not from Manchester, but how did I know that when I was a toddaler? I had no say in the matter, mainly because of my Irish background. Any one that says you have to support your local team is talking shit. Your team picks YOU! you don't pick them. Even if when I'd got a bit older and United weren't doing well, it wouldn't have changed me supporting United, and it never will. I've always supported United more when things aren't going well and weather we're successful or not has no bearing as to why I support them.

and isn't that one of the perks of being succesful? I mean I really don't see the issue, I've never really connected with the notion that all mancs or most of them are glory hunters, and if they were who cares. And Man United has always been the best supported club in england.

The Vitality

It may indeed be a perk for the "money men" at Old Trafford, but look at it from this perspective. You are going to Highbury, but when inside the ground there is no atmosphere, when would this happen? It would happen when Arsenal dominate Englsih football for years. Now it would incense me to sit around others who are there purely because at that moment in time we are winners. I could not bare that. And I assure you it happens at Old Trafford.

I understand. I guess as gooners it may be hard because no one has ever liked us ;)

I'll admit that ther are a lot of "man yoo" fans who don't know anything about the club and support them purely because they've won a few trophies, i know quite a few. but they give the rest of us a bad name. There are plenty of die hard reds in london who bleed united and will always be behind the team, just as there are up and down the country.

A Chance Switch Opened a Path to United
By JACK BELL

Published: July 31, 2004

AST RUTHERFORD, N.J., July 30 - Serendipity smiled on Jonathan Spector two years ago at a youth soccer tournament in Ireland.

John Ellinger, the coach of the United States under-17 national team, was short of defenders. He looked down his bench and saw Spector, a striker.

"There were a bunch of European scouts at the game, including some from Manchester United," Spector said Friday. "They had come to see some forward from Austria. Just by coincidence, I marked him and marked him out of the game."

So instead of asking about the Austrian, United's scouts went home to England hooked on Spector, the 6-foot-1-inch, 180-pound newly minted defender from Arlington Heights, Ill.

On Saturday afternoon, he will play for Manchester United against A.C. Milan in a ChampionsWorld Series tour match at Giants Stadium. "This is a great opportunity for me, playing with one of the greatest teams in the world," Spector said.

Spector, who played for the Chicago Sockers, spent a year at the United States Soccer Federation's residency camp in Bradenton, Fla., before signing with United in September 2003. He avoided work permit and visa problems because his mother is German, and he holds a German passport.

Last season was spent on United's under-19 team, with only one game on the senior team's bench during an English Premier League match late in the season, a disappointing one in which United slumped to a third-place finish.

Sir Alex Ferguson, United's Scottish manager, brought Spector along for the club's second-straight summer visit to the United States and gave him his first start with the senior team, against Bayern Munich last Sunday before a hometown crowd in Chicago.

"It had special significance because not many players get to make their professional debuts in their hometowns," said Spector, who is taking correspondence courses from Indiana University. "I was anxious and excited, but not too nervous."

He played again in Wednesday's loss to Glasgow Celtic in Philadelphia and was called for a foul on Celtic's Chris Sutton in the penalty area. But Ferguson's confidence in Spector has not been shaken.

"He spots danger very well for a young lad," Ferguson told Sky Sports. "He is very quick and is a good athlete. He has only been with us nine months, but in that time he has made great strides."

Spector's grandfather, Art, was one of the original members of the Boston Celtics, playing in the 1946-47 season of the old Basketball Association of America, the forerunner of the National Basketball Association.

Spector said he really does not miss playing striker. "As a defender I can see the whole field, and I might have a bit of an edge because I still think I have a striker's mentality - I know when they're going to make their runs," he said.

Spector is among a handful of American players with United. They include the starting goalkeeper Tim Howard and the under-19 players Kenny Cooper and Giuseppe Rossi. Rossi is the son of the former coach of Clifton (N.J.) High School, Fernando Rossi, and played with Parma's under-19 team before recently signing with Manchester United.

Ruud and Saha return for United

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson should be spoilt for choice up front in the Vodafone Cup on Tuesday.

Ruud van Nistelrooy is set to face his former side PSV Eindhoven at Old Trafford as is Louis Saha.

Both stayed behind to work on their fitness while United were away on a three-game 10-day tour of the United States.

And in their absence £7m buy Alan Smith staked a claim for regular start with a string of impressive displays.

While van Nistelrooy and Saha have been pencilled in for the start of the tournament, Darren Fletcher and Quinton Fortune are likely to face Urawa Red Diamonds on Thursday.

Ferguson said: "The thing uppermost in my mind is how van Nistelrooy, Saha, Fletcher and Fortune are.

Yeah he aint had many games but the truth is he loses the ball too often and his first touch and finishing abilities are not good enough for our standards.

I bet if wenger had bought him, he would have converted him into a natural right winger by now.

so do you think wenger is a better manager than fergie at this present moment of time cause i do. i think fergie is past it. his big signing this summer is alan smith. alan smith is SHIT.

Chadwick completes Hammers switch

West Ham have completed the signing of Manchester United winger Luke Chadwick on a free transfer.

The former England Under-21 international was unable to win a regular place in the United midfield despite a handful of impressive appearances as a teenager.

Chadwick spent all of last season on loan with Burnley, scoring five goals, and has also had spells with Royal Antwerp and Reading.

His three-month stint with the Royals at the end of 2002-03 season first brought him under the guidance of current Hammers boss Alan Pardew.

Pardew told the club's official website: "I am delighted to have signed a player with great potential.

"Luke did well for me when I took him to Reading and I expect him to become an exciting and important part of the squad.

"He is certainly a player the fans will enjoy watching."

JOE KINNEAR has told Andy Reid that he can do better than Tottenham — and has recommended him to Alex Ferguson, writes JANINE SELF.

Winger Reid, 22, slapped in a transfer request last week after Nottingham Forest rejected a £3million offer from Spurs.

But Forest boss Kinnear, who values Reid at £5m, reckons that his star is destined for one of the Premiership’s bigger clubs.

And he has mentioned Reid’s name to Old Trafford boss Fergie.

Kinnear said: “I spoke to Alex two days ago and he asked me who is my best player and I told him it was Andy.

“I said ‘He’s good enough to get in your team.’ He really is one for the future and there are not too many around like him.”

Reid’s transfer request has been refused by Forest and the player will be in the team which kicks off against Wigan today.

And Wigan boss Paul Jewell has told his side, who just missed a top six spot last season, to look at Forest if they need a warning how success can rapidly turn to disaster.

Forest’s dramatic decline from play-off hopefuls to relegation candidates within 12 months emphasises the dangers facing his side.

Jewell said: “Just because you did well last year doesn’t mean you turn up and everything will happen.”

Speculation is mounting that Manchester United are getting ready to make a late transfer plunge to bridge the gaping hole in their strikeforce.

With leading scorer Ruud van Nistelrooy out for the first month of the season and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer set to miss the whole of the campaign, Sir Alex Ferguson is expected to make an 11th hour bid to bring in new blood.

Everton and England hitman Wayne Rooney would seem the obvious choice, but United could turn their attention elsewhere because of the Goodison Park club's demands for a £30m-plus fee.

Ferguson is more likely to play a waiting game for the 18-year-old, a make him his main target during either the January transfer window or next summer, with Rooney said to be keen to switch to Old Trafford an demanding a get-out clause in his next contract should he agree to stay on at Everton.

Arsenal's Sylvain Wiltord is the latest name to be linked with United while in the meantime Ferguson has blocked all transfer talk involving Uruguayan striker Diego Forlan.

He was said to be ready to move to Spain last week but instead finds himself favourite to partner new-boy Alan Smith as United begin their competitive season on Wednesday night with a Champions League qualifier in Romania.

"Solskjaer is a miss which is why I'm not inclined to let Diego go," said Ferguson. "There has been a lot of coming and going in the last couple of weeks regarding clubs in Spain trying to get him in on the cheap.

"But nothing has really excited us to let him move so since what has happened to Solskjaer and now van Nistelrooy it means he won't be going out now."

What do you think of united apparently bidding for Vassel? We need a striker as a stop gap until Ruud + Saha comes back and its pointless buying a star when they will want to be played all the time and we already have a surplus, especially if we're gonna buy Rooney. However I think we should go for someone like Morienties on a short term loan if possible, it doesn't matter about being cup tied as Ruud + Saha will hopefully be back (or at least Saha) for the group stage. Vassell would just replace Forlan as last choice striker and I dunno how much impression he could make anyway.

We definately need a new striker, there is no doubt about that. Ole will probably never play again and there is no way that Bellion and Forlan are of good enough quality to play for Manchester United.

We've got a lot more to worry about than just strikers. Our 1st 11 is more than capable of beating any team in this league and most teams in Europe. However I dont think anyone can really remember the last time we had our 1st choice 11 available at the same time.

As much as I dont want to say it, players like Bellion, Forlan, Fortune, Kleberson etc just aren't good enough to win the Premiership. Our squad is the least talented of all the teams in the top 3 without a shadow of a doubt.

Lord Shrimpeh
16-08-2004, 19:06
I think the last time we had our first 11 fit was when we were 4 points ahead at the top of the premiership. In my view we should wait and buy Rooney and get a loan in the mean time. We also need quality back up in midfield and defense, especially for Scholes he seems the only creative player we have in central midfield.

Ronaldo could be back early as Portugal aren't faring too well in the Olympics (though he has 2 wc qualifiers for Portugal too) Bellion has shown promising flashes during matches, but I really think Diego Forlan has to be moved on now, as much as he is well thought of by the fans he clearly isn't United quality. Encouraging news about Saha though, some newspapers claim he may be fit this Saturday for the Norwich game.

Chris Eagles' goal was quality too, I'm really impressed with how he has come on over the past few months. Guiseppe Rossi looked quite lively up front too, unlucky his goal was offside, that was a neat finish.

Looking forward to seeing Gerrard Pique soon, I've read good things about him.

I think Forlan is better than Bellion, at least he occasionally scores and he has scored some important goals too. He is still crap though. I never thought there could be a worse striker than Forlan but somehow Bellion is. He ain't that young so he won't improve, he is the pace and acceleration but everything else is crap. I think scoring on his debut is the only thing he has ever done for United, mores the pity.
Portugal are out the Olympics now but I don't think Ronaldo will be coming back soon :( I dunno why he needs a rest, he had quite a lot of time between Euro 2004 and the Olympics and he can't be short of match practice.

united desperately need to buy a midfielder. we dont have a good enough midfield to contend for the title. players like flecher, djemba, phil neville, fortune couldnt dream of getting into the team in 1999, so why are they playing now. this clearly shows we are heading downhill. we needed to buy ronaldinho but didnt. that isnt the problem. the problem is we didnt buy anyone instead.

I dont think Fergie will play him on his first match back. As mutch as I want to see him play Sir Alex willl prob rest him 4 the weekend cos think about it - its only Norwich. We hardly need a full team to beat them ;)

I just hope we can put a few past norwich to give us good goal difference and put us in a remotely good place in the table. I know its early days but we still need to be up there at the top

Portugal may want to hold on to Ronnie because they have two upcoming World Cup qualifiers - I wouldn't expect Sir Alex to play him till after then as he has had practically no rest since last christmas. I think he only had one or two weeks, I think he went into training with the Portuguese squad again pretty much straight away. Given the fact that as a youngster Fergie will wrap him in cotton wool - I don't think Ronnie has had anywhere near the break that Fergie wants. Remember he had two months break in the middle of last season. I could see Fergie reluctantly throwing him back into the team early, especially if our results don't improve. Saha should be there or thereabouts for Norwich though, so that's a plus. It'll be interesting to see how Saha and Smith play together.

They r both fast so they should cause the other teams defence some problems and we all know that smith has a good shot on him (the Community Shield Volley ;) ) and Saha didnt get in2 the French national squad for nuthin so hopefully they should b able to do a good enuff job until Nistelrooy is back.

1 question - WTF did Fergie buy Bellion for??? He is nowhere near gud enuff 2 even challenge for a place in the Man Utd squad and he hasnt shown ny signs of improvement. He will barely even make a mark on the reserve team let alone the first team!!!

Bellion is seen as a long term investment, he has excellent potential and Sir Alex is very pleased at the rate at which Bellion is learning the top level game, if his interviews are anything to go by. Personally I think Bellion is coming along OK.

Smith and Saha are too similar to play in the same team. I think you need a holding forward like Scholes or Nistelrooy. Someone to lay the ball off for them to chase then the holding player can find a good pos. in the box, and we all know how good Scholes and Nistelrooy are at that...

he could........and it'd be so easy, but if Fergie would've bought someone more experienced over someone like C. Ronaldo, he would've deprived the entire world of bringing out such an exceptional talent
he could've bought better ppl at the time of young beckham, giggs, scholes, and the entire core crew of man utd, but Sir Alex didn't, he chose to bring up his own superstars, that's why I respect him so much, and that's the beauty of a club like Man Utd compared to a club like Real Madrid

You take any team for granted and you're gonna get burnt. Lyon will put us up against Giovanni Elber again, and he certainly did some damage when we played Bayern a few years ago. Sparta will re-unite us with Mr Poborsky (who now looks the player United hoped he'd be for them) and going to Turkey is never easy either. I think United will progress but I don't think it's going to be quite as easy as some think.

Strange things can happen, remember their collapse 2 seasons ago? They could have injuries or anything. However at the mo it looks like another Arsenal championship.. if Chelsea play as they are now I can see them drawing or losing and Man U have a lot of catching up to do. Although I can see Man Utd being the msot likely to challenge Arsenal as this same team led Arsenal at Christmas last year, Chelsea we don't know enough about. Playing as they do at the mo they have no chance, whereas we have proof United can up a gear.

Man Utd match - there were like 100 million chances for united to score, funnily their goal came from a bad calll by the ref. Anyway, they did deserve a goal. And they do look terrible with that handicapped team - RVN, Rio, Heinze, Wes Braun, Keane. The combination of silvestre and Oshea was a disgrace. I think that old Fergie has lost it with his choices - he desperatly needs someone to replace keane. Kleberson is totally shite. I don't really think they can pull it this year.
