Im going into Peterborough tomorrow to spend some unearned cash, but one thing I really need is a long ethernet cable. Im not buying online, cause... im just not, and im having some real trouble finding any stores that could possibly sell the cable.

There's many shops so there will be many choices, I just need to know where to head for first because im sure some of you will have come across a few shops which sell them. Thanks if you can help me, I kinda need a quick reply.

How long is long? What sort of shops do you have local to the area? PC World? *spits in disgust*

Well 20ft wont do the job, it'd be tight, so the next level up I guess, 50ft, whatever.

The shopping centre has a fair few electronics stores but they're the kind of stores you'd think would sell the cables, but in the end dont, like Currys, Dixons etc. Tell me if you think otherwise though. PC World and the like isnt too far, well its not near the shopping centre, but meh.

PC World do ethernet cables up to and possibly in excess of 50m. Currys and Dixons while electrical tend to be more TV-based rather than computer hardware/networking which is where they're much less likely to have cables. Probably worth having a quick check if they're close. I wouldn't have thought you'd have a massive issue getting the cable to be honest, but I might be wrong.

If it were an area I knew well, I could suggest others but that isn't the case.

Yeah well it is an issue really, im caught in two minds as to what to do.

Actually this really is pissing me off now, think im definately going to have to trek up to PC world. Thanks

I was thinking of running a long ethernet cable from my pc, up through the attic and down to my room, instead of forking out for a wireless connection. Which option would be reccomended?

A long ethernet cable is usually a reasonable price but I'd say wireless on the basis of it not having a wire running about the place and I'm extremely happy with my wireless network.

It depends on a lot of things: what length of ethernet cable you need and what sort of price you can find one for in the first instance. Wireless can involve router settings if you need to reboot or limit the number of concurrent connections which really isn't difficult to understand but are a tiny something you won't have to deal with, along with additional security, when using a hard connection.

Cheers for the info man. I'll probably end up setting up a wireless connection eventually.

Wired is always > Wireless.

If you can run a cable without too much drama I'd recommend it.

In terms of Speed + Stability + Reliability + fuckers leeching/trying to hack into your wireless net.
