Really sorry lads, I'm sure there's a thread for this kind of thing somewhere, but due to my frustration at scouring Google pages for answers I resorted to this.

Here's the deal, from what I understand, Virgin Media is compatible with Xbox Live, and at home I'll shortly be on 8mb broadband with them (currently only on 1mb ).

What I need to know is the best set up to have, I shelled out £70 on a Belkin router early last year and it was fucking useless, got absolutely nowhere with it and sold it on eBay for about £15.

The modem I use is plugged in via a USB cable if this helps.

I need to know which router to buy and if I should get the wireless adapter too for xbox.

Most of my friends back home have PS3s so I decided to sort out Xbox live 'whenever' but now my pal Sean has got it and is wanting online games so I want to get it up and running asap.

Any help would be appreciated greatly.

Thanks in advance lads.

How close is your 360 to where you will place your router? Wired connections are still preferable to wireless where ever possible, especilly when doing a demanding activity such as gaming.

Do you use a laptop or a PC, if so are they wireless enabled? If not you will have to decide whether to make your PC wireless or your Xbox 360, unless they are both close enough to be hard wired to the router. I would personally recommend the PC/Laptop as it's cheaper and should perform better, particularly if you don't use the PC/Laptop for any form of online gaming.

I'm also assuming you don't live in a particularly huge house, or one with lead lined walls or anything similarly annoying so the routers I'd suggest are:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/103185 - Something along those lines would be the sort of standard you'd need to go for if you're going to hardwire your 360.

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/90827 - Or I expect this would look nicer next to your 360 and perform just as well for you.

I would certainly opt to hardwire the 360 and make my PC/Laptop wireless if I were you from the information you've given.

I am on Virgin and I have a router called Sweex. I have no problems with it but my Xbox and PC are only about 3 foot apart. However if I have both PC and Box on at the same time and I download it can go quite slow.

Lads, seriously thanks so much for your help, I know how irritating it probably gets when newbies ask these kind of questions so thanks a mil.

For the record, I live in a flat, the PC is in the living room and the xbox currently in the bedroom is getting moved into the living room prob tonight. I already have a 15m ethernet cable if thats any use?

That would be fine, just use that to hardwire the 360, making the 360 wireless is expensive and not worth it in my opinion.

Shit. Sorry to bother you guys again, but one of the problems I had before was that my modem is plugged into the desktop via USB, does this mean a router won't work?

If you get one of the wireless modem/routers Original? suggested then you'll be fine. Connect your desktop to the modem/router via Ethernet. (Might need to buy a longer cable depending on your layout)

Bollocks, sorry again lads, but i've connected the router to the desktop by Ethernet cable.

Annoying thing is i can't find any online help that involves USB modems :realmad:

As far as i know i've got all the right kit to 'Go Live' but for some reason I just can't get my head round the thing.

Post modem & router models please.

Router - Linksys WRT54GC

Modem - Speedtouch 330

The problem I think lies with the modem being plugged in via USB port, there is no way to attach it to the router, nor can I find a router that will accept a USB.

I don't normally get so wound up but I'm at my wits end with this thing :crymore:

I'm afraid you'll need to get a new modem with Ethernet connection. I'm not sure what are the best ones are but I use Linksys.
