Anyone else got this?

In the last week my internet dies from 4pm to about midnight and doesn't load pages at any faster then 5Kb/s which is infuriating to say the least. On top of that it doesn't even fully load pages and sometimes just won't open pages at all. However after midnight its fine and theres absolutely no problems. Its really getting on my tits.

I get that too sometimes, but I think it's because loads of people share the same bandwidth.

What ISP are you with?

Traffic shaping. If you download a particular amount in a day, your bandwidth is significantly reduced during peak hours.

Virgin Media through the phone line.

I used to have Virgin Media through cable in my old house and I know they halved my speed from 2Mb to 1Mb during the day which they eventually told me would happen but 1Mb is enough however the non cable broadband is awful and this problem has only cropped up this week but I know a lot of people who have been affected by it. Theres no way my speed is above 56K just now.

Maybe they're installing those new fibre lines (?) that have been mentioned in the news recently. Apparently they enable you to receive up to 100mb.

We'll probably get ripped off where those are concerned. A(n up to) 100mb line that fails to deliver until years down the line when they're all on the verge of being fined by the regulator for false advertising/enforced capping followed by more traffic shaping at a guess.

I'd love to be wrong.

Virgin Media ADSL have got a very bad reputation. Why did you sign up with them?

Their cable service is much better (or so I've heard). But even with their cable service they've started to throttle recently. They've always throttled their ADSL service.

Most Virgin Media ADSL customers believe that Virgin don't even know how to provide a good service on an ADSL line because it isn't a technology they're familiar with. And besides, most of Virgin Media's Broadband revenue comes from their cable service not their ADSL service. I think it has come down to which one Virgin considers higher priority and I guess it's not the ADSL service.

I had NTL through the cable for 5 years without any problems. Well I did when they started halving my speed during the day and telling me 4 months after it happened but I moved house and there was no cable available in the area and I didn't think there would be that much difference between the two services but clearly I was wrong. Before this week I was getting okay-ish speeds suring the day nothing as slow as it is just now so I don't know if this is something that kicks in after a while.

I was thinking of moving to Virgin Media ADSL myself back in September as well because of their cheap prices - I almost fell into that trap. But then I looked at the ISP review websites and saw that they were rated as one of the worst ISPs for ADSL but the reviews for their Cable Broadband service were good.

Next time, when you're looking for another ISP, have a look at all of the ISP review websites and the thinkbroadband.com forums as well before making a decision about which ISP you want to sign up with.

They should be able to give you an idea as to which ISP are the best ones to go for in your area. This is how I avoided going with Virgin Media ADSL. I decided to sign up with Be* instead and have been relatively happy with them.
