I’ve been using Yahoo widget for the last few days and have found a couple of promising football widgets.
The first is SoccerStats http://widgets.yahoo.com/widgets/soccerstats it gives you the latest scores from loads of leagues. It’s easy to use and updates every few seconds or depends on how it’s configured. It has features such as, how many cards have been issued, how many free kicks, corers, offsides, fouls, saves, possession and shots on goal.
When a player scores or gets booked you can click on that player’s name and get some more info. It also has an option to show the line up but I’ve not got this to work yet.

There one annoying thing; it insists on showing me the scores from most of the leagues, even though I untick the leagues I don’t want.
It monitors leagues and International matches.
It can also give betting odds but I can’t get that to work.

European Soccer Championship 2008; this widget will display the latest scores when the championship starts in the summer. Its looks great, shows flags for each country in a cube form.
Shows the tables on a transparent back ground, when you click on a flag the corresponding table appears but it clearly cannot be properly tested until the summer.

There are a few more Football widgets on both http://widgets.yahoo.com/widgets and http://www.widgetgallery.com but these are the two I believe have the best potential.
If you find another that you like please let me know.

I’ve already posted a thread on a Firefox add-on that does the same thing but the benefit of widgets are; they will not crash your browser or slow your surfing.

You will need the Yahoo widget engine to use any Yahoo widget.

So is Yahoo Widget or FootieFox better?

It’s down to personal preference.
Firefox add-ons (if you have too many) will slow your browsing and eventually crash your browser and make it unusable.

Yahoo widgets are completely separate from your browser and will not affect it.
The added bonuses with widgets are that you can place them any where on your desktop, it’s easier to switch them on and off, you don’t have to restart the widget engine each time you want to use a new widget and they look great.

The more widgets you have; the slower the widget engine will run.

I once had about 20 Firefox add-ons with 12 enable and because of this my browser would crash anywhere from every 20-40 mins every time I use it.
I now have only 4 add-ons ad I don’t intend to install any more unless it’s essential.

If I can find a widget that works as well as the FootieFox add-on; I will get rid of FootieFox.

Ok I should stick on FootieFox then as I don't have much add-ons on my browser.

Wasn't a widget something that could be found in the bottom of a can of Boddingtons, advertised by Jack Dee signing many years ago?
