That's a good team in my opinion. I always worry a little though when I see James in goal!! He is our best option, but he just seems a little too adventurous and/or relaxed when he plays! The rest of the squad just ooze quality. I just don't know why we can't seem to win a major tournament. I think it must be a mental thing/organisation thing because the raw talent is there. Could it be the league schedule? The fact that they hardly ever get to meet up and play as a team?

You can have all the stars in the world, but if they don't know how to play together, it won't work.

F***in love England though! We may not have won anything for a while, but we are still very good.

That is pretty much the team I think is best too. Is that for a flat or diamond midfield?

Maybe Robinson will challenge for being keeper though as I think he is good and young (although I am a little biased by how great he is in PES2!).

I think England can do well when everyone plays well, such as beating Germany 5-1 and so on.
But they need to have everyone fully fit (unlike in WC02), especially Beckham, Owen and Gerrard. And maybe a left footed midfielder would improve the situation.

The average age of the team is quite low (now that Seaman and Sheringham are gone) so once more of them gain some European experience then the future should be bright.

I do think the English Premiership has too many teams in it and reducing the number (by maybe 3 or 4) would help England and the English teams in Europe a whole lot.

Maybe they are predictable in always playing 4-4-2.
How's this for an alternative?
Maybe it's more adaptable.

Isn't there a right back in the whole of England that is better then Gary Neville? He's always good in Man U, but always seems a little nervous(?) or unsure during England games.

Any ideas who can fill his boots?

Good to see Butt in there. He is a highly underrated player that does well in almost every match he plays in.

I am also a Vassel fan mostly because I love his speed. He is a lot faster than Owen and Rooney put together.

Is J.Terry really good enough to start for England? Not a statement, just a question!

Zygalski

I do agree with the use of Terry or another CB who is either good or playing well.

It would be good to play any 2 out of Owen, Vassell and Rooney with the odd one coming on as sub and causing panic for the opposition.

I don't think Beckham can play at wing back any more.
He is more useful at getting in those through balls and crosses which is why he would do better in the middle.
Plus if he is running up and down all the time, he will be less effective at what he does best (passing and kicking people!).

Someone like O'Shea could play wing back on the right so who is English and like that? Parlour maybe?

This formation brings up another problem, doesn't it?!

Englands best team would be:

Robinson

Mills Terry Campbell Cole

Joe Cole Gerrard Dyer

Scholes

Rooney Owen

Great combination of youth and experience, and also alot of class.

Terry in for Neville.

Jenas in for Dyer? Or who else there?

The reason I didnt put Rio in is because I dont think hes earnt his place. His form this year for united hasnt been 30m worth,.

Zygalski
01-06-2003, 00:48
Rio was an automatic choice for most people, however well or badly he was playing for Leeds.

He has contributed to improving United's defence from 'very dodgy' to 'very dodgy but the best in the league table'.

He may not be worth that much but that was only the amount Leeds were willing to sell him for so you either take it or leave it.
He is at a good age and with more potential yet so it was a good gamble to take.

Would you say Buffon is worth his value?

Gooner 4 Life
01-06-2003, 12:19
Buffon is easily worth his value. He has saved them so many times, won them cups, got them to finals, that hes probably made more money for Juventus than they paid for him. Hes class.

Zygalski
01-06-2003, 15:29
Would have expected him to do better on Wednesday night though.
I'm not sure about this but how was his World Cup?

Gooner 4 Life
02-06-2003, 20:55
How could Buffon do any bettr on wednesday, he made a world class save from Inzaghi, didnt conceede in normal time, + saved 2 pens, what more do you want!

buffon is well worth his value ! and i thought he was supurb in the final

Best keeper by far

Zygalski
03-06-2003, 15:35
It could be argued that Dida was the better keeper in the final as he did better in the penalty shoot-out.
He wasn't bad for his value.

What more do I want? To win the match maybe?

real11
03-06-2003, 15:43
Dida is a great penalty saver but overall is still way behind Gigi

Voltz

Yeah but Buffon still isn't worth that much! It's ridiculous, no one is worth that much, but especially a goalkeeper when you can still get a good quality goalkeeper fairly cheap who is young and can get better. All that money they spent on Buffon could of gone into improving other things at the club, which may have helped them to win the Champions League!

Buffon is a young keeper. Juventus didntt really need that much when they bought buffon only a keeper. And waste of money, coming from a spurs fan whos team spent 8.5m on a 28 year old poor defender and 4m on a 30+ poor german. Look at ur own team 1st.

Gooner 4 Life, someone else is allowed to have an opinion without having to be ridiculed about the status of their own team.
Try to stick to the point being made.

If you need to change the subject like that, it suggests you don't have much of a case for defending your point of view which I don't believe.

You began by making a good point but went downhill by choosing to attack rather than defend.

I must agree with this team, Zygalski. We're sure to beat anyone...especially if we're fielding 12 players!!!!

No player is worth what Juve paid for Buffon but they paid it. His value should not be held against him as " for the worlds most expensive keeper......he should be the best". This can be laid at Ferdinand, Crespo, Mendieta, Veron, Heskey, Collymore......
The fees paid were surely due to the selling clubs' wise dealings.

Mumpleaser

Yeah, get rid of Butt and we've got a lean mean attacking machine! But then we'll only have a 3 man defence. Can that be done?!!

Ask Sven!:p

Reckon that I would keep Butt and jettison Gerrard for the time being going on form. Also would play 4-4-2 and have a tight-ish diamond. But England need to have 3 formations that they can rotate with at will. El Tel's Xmas tree, the above and 3-5-2 for my money. But we've never really been comfortable with 3 CBs

Zygalski

Oh well, my master plan for england success has been spoilt by those damned kids again.
Well-spotted.

OK then, take out Dyer and shuffle Cole back into a back 4.
Sorted.
