10 (Realistic) Predictions for PES 2009

I’ve been covering Pro Evolution Soccer online for the past 6 years now and Konami can be pretty predictable - so here are my best educated guesses for what we are likely to see.

PES 2009 WILL BE RELEASED IN OCTOBER
Forget all the rumours you may have heard about there being no Pro Evolution Soccer until next year, PES 2009 will be released in Europe during October 2008.

PREMIER LEAGUE TEAMS WILL NOT BE EDITABLE
I think this is something that has been coming for a while. For the past few years the Premier League has been getting on Konami’s back more and more about the Option Files that end up floating around the web and, more importantly, eBay. I dare say EA are not too happy about it either given there ‘exclusive’ deal. So I think it’s quite likely that PES 2009 the kits, at least, will be locked down for the Premier League teams.

THERE WILL BE ONLY TWO LICENSED PREMIER LEAGUE TEAMS
At most! Konami have to buy these licenses individually from the clubs, and I believe they are allowed a maximum of 2… until the ‘exclusive’ deal EA has with the Premier League expires in 2010 when the rights will be up for grabs again. Don’t be surprised if the licensed teams are Everton and Aston Villa.

PENDULUM WILL PERFORM THE INTRO MUSIC
PES 2008’s choice of music was questionable to say the least. I don’t have a problem with choosing the Kaiser Chiefs, but the song just didn’t work. Something with a bit more kick to it will be introduced for PES 2009. Pendulum, best known for their hits ‘Granite‘ and ‘Slam‘, have already had their music appear in Motorstorm on the PS3 and Dance Dance Revolution Universe on XBox 360.

ONLINE MODES WILL BE IMPROVED
This goes without saying. Konami know that unless online is ten-times better than it was for PES 2008 that they are in BIG trouble. I expect there will be online leagues, or at least knock-out cup contests, and the lobby system will be modified to be similar to that of PES6.

UNLIMITED AMOUNT OF SAVED REPLAYS
No idea why you can’t do this alread.

MASTER LEAGUE TO FEATURE MORE INTERACTION
They took a step in the right direction with PES 2008 by introducing things like ‘Player speaks about recent form’, but this can, and needs, to be taken a lot further. Around 5 years ago Konami made a joint announcement with SI Games that PES and CM would be joining forces - what the hell happened to that? I don’t see any Football Manager features currently in PES, do you? But for PES 2009 I forsee the ability to interact with players such as praising them for recent performances, resulting in their moral going up. Too much of this though and other players will become disheartend. Newspaper reports linking you to certain players will require a response from you - this will make negotiations with the player in question easier, or harder, depending on how you handle the report.

YOU WILL BE ABLE TO STAND CLOSER FOR THROW-INS
Why can’t you go within 10 yards of a person taking a throw-in at the moment? I think Konami will finally see sense in the new game and allow players to go as close as they like (well, closer than 10 yards anyway!).

REFEREE’S WILL BE MORE INTELLIGENT
I think one of the most disapointing aspects of the PES 2008 gameplay was the fact the referees often spoilt the game. You would see red for a perfectly good tackle, while a last man lunge would be punishable with only yellow. Advantages will be re-introduced properly. They seemed far less realistic in PES 2008 than they did in PES6. Unless I’ve somehow missed it, referee’s won’t go back and book a player after allowing play to continue following a rough challenge. This will be addressed for PES 2009.

PES SHOP to re-introduced along with welcoming the BUNDESLIGA BACK
The PS3 version has been a major disappointment for me. Though not very important, the PES shop is a good addition and little things purchased from it helps the game overall. (e.g - able to unlock a team w/legends). The German league has to be back, licensed or not, it's a well-know league and it's got many good teams/players in it. PES 2008 just didn't feel complete missing out on a league such as the Bundesliga.

EMIRATES STADIUM added
Or any major stadium in Europe for that matter (CSKA Moscow, Stade Gerland etc.). Almost all the top 3-4 teams in the big leagues have their own stadiums, Arsenal's should be included.

EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR as STAR COVER a possibility
The guy has been having a fantastic season so far and while a cover is not the reward he deserves, it'll certainly be a big bonus. However, I believe Torres can win more sales.

EGYPT ADDED in favor of ISRAEL or just added into the game w/out DELETING
Can't deny but being the Champs of Africa twice in a row (beating Ivory Coast and Cameroon in the finals) certainly merits a place in the most popular football game available for the fans.

Arsenal - Tottenham (though I guess they might not want Spurs two games straight)

Villa - Birmingham

Newcastle - Sunderland or Middlesbrough

Don’t think I need to elaborate on this one.

1 - Konami will Re-Introduce the good old PES Game Play as a Next Gen Feature. And of course many PES Fans will think it is a Next Gen Game.

2 - Konami will also Re-Introduce the old Editing Mode.

3 - The same Old Issues will remain; Lack of licenses, Unedited Classic Players + Crappy Online Play.

4 - PES 2009 will have the Same Exact Skills/Stats that PES haves since 2004.

5 - If Konami does indeed accomplishes good Graphics and Game Play; PES Fans will be satisfied, although PES 2009 would still be far from Next Gen Gaming.

Bottom Line - PES 2009 will use the same exact Skill and Special Abilities System that PES has been using for the last 5 years now - In other words, Konami will use the same Old Gen stats system for PES 2009. Therefore PES 2009 will still be far away from what the PS3 can really offer.

First thing you mention is it will be released in October. Now call me a cunny but I believe if it isn't quite ready then just delay it. Now sure it may be a pain in the arse and Konami will come under immense pressure but all in all we would prefer a polished and finished game rather than a half arsed next gen rush like 6 and 2008. I certainly could wait a few additional Months in exchange that the game is finished. The new Uefa game isn't too bad and I think they are slowly eclipsing Konami.

Also one thing that totally gets my goat is when you watch a replay from a Master League game it reverts to default kits. Why? On the old games it doesn't happen. Truly daft.

That replay thing really annoys me too. The kits and names don't revert to the defaults when playing a friendly, so I don't know why it happens in replays.

I know these are more demands than predictions, but I would also like them to bring back the ability to play with the aged ML team in exhibition games.

It seems as if Konami have built up a section of Fans who they now think are fans forever but the way they are carrying on is upsetting many a person and making them leave the PES franchise behid. 2009 has to be fucking incredible or else I will lose my patience.

-More Cup Tournaments
-Improve ML a bit more, like if a club rejects, then why they rejected you.
-Better Licenses Teams for the English League
-Bundesliga, why this was taken out of 6 and 2008 i don't know
-Refeeres better
-Online Play improved


I think the front cover could include 3 or 4.

my predictions and opinions:

1. Possibly either Man City, Aston villa or Everton to be licensed - Konami really need to get them licenses coz everyone is very dissapointed, when the chance does come i think konami will go stingy again, ruin our bloody game and not have the EPL registered

2. More countries will be registered such as Cyprus (please!), Egypt etc - Konami also really need to get more countries registered, there is no fun in playing with the same country teams over and over again.

3. Online play will improve - because Konami know this year they really shitted the game up and alot of people were pissed off by the laggin and stuff like that

4. Lower divisions will be added - this would also effect master league eg start in division 3 and build popularity and get through the divisions to become the greatest team in the world

5. Master league will change a lot - same structure i think but you will
be in interviews and pick what decision kinda like Smackdown vs Raw 2008 where in story mode there are choices on what to say, and what you do say affects your team and negotiatons. Also i think they will bring the master league traning back (previously was in PES6).

6. Gameplay will improve drastically - Konami need to up their game badly, you have to admit Fifa beats PES2008 on tricks but Pes2008 just wins the battle by the gameplay, movement on the pitch, and skills by playing it. But if konami dont get anymore tricks they will lose the majoraty of gamers next year.
i dont think a lot of people are satisfied with the tricks , there is only stepovers, flip-flop, rabona, the maradona turn and afew dummees.

7. More modes - i think konami are also lacking modes, like Hitmanuk2k said they joined forces and there has been no new modes or anything,
they should have like indoor mode, manager mode etc

Basically Konami really need to improve the game next year and put alot of effort into it.

2. The controls will be identical, bar a new gimmick like Super Horror Dirty Tackle or Vinnie Jones NutGrab etc
3. Two licensed Premier League teams - at a guess, Portsmouth and Everton (oh the joy!)
4. No change to Master League
5. No new game modes
6. About five new International teams - such as Egypt (I don't think they're on)
7. No new club sides barring those who've been promoted
8. No revolutionary unlockables (ie just legends and crap stuff like footballs)
9. Sorry I'm running out of things to predict, it's all gonna be the same
10. Goalkeepers might not be retarded this time mind, if Konami have actually played their own game that is.

Anyway, in terms of predictions, I think we will see either two of the 'big four' licennsed, or two out of Everton, Man City, Villa or Pompey. It won't be Newcastle or Spurs, because its just been us (unless Mickey Owen has some long standing affiliation and pulls some strings) and it won't be the mackems because they're too rubbish.

The Master League will depressingly stay the same I reckon. The only real way to improve it is by having second-tier teams in my opinion.

Hopefully defending AI will get better, but I'm not holding my breath. If there was a way to implement the man marking system from the Wii on to the other consoles then I think we'd have a cracking game on our hands.

How long has this game been online and yet still no options to set up a league online.Thats what football's all about isnt it,playing a league or knockout cup online would add so much to this game.I heard a rumour of an indoor mode for the next pes so dont get your hopes up for anything special.Another rumour i heard was there was a big bust up with the konami team as whether to have monkey or donkey head as an unlockable!No wonder the last game was unfinished :P

What i would like to see in PES 2009 are the German, Russian, Australian, Scottish Premier, English Championship and Japanese leagues. Flares being thrown onto the pitch, crowd trouble, mass brawls between players and coaching staff, the occasional streaker who is quickly covered up by the police. Also players ripping their tops off and diving into the crowd after scoring a last-minute goal just to get booked by the ref.
