View Full Version : Blu Ray Requirements

I'm set to purchase a Playstation 3 this Friday and was contemplating picking up a few Blu-ray Discs to go with it. I was browsing ebay earlier getting ready to import There Will Be Blood and thought I may as well get the Blu-Ray version as I've been hearing the quality is top notch.
However my old man who manages a Curry's store was telling me something along the lines of that despite it being superb quality I wouldn't get the very best out of it as my tv does not have the highest requirements.
Would it be advisable for me to get some or should I just stick with my PS3 for games and wait until I get an actual Blu-Ray dvd player downstairs when they come down in price.
Thanks in advance
Blu-Ray will be a noticable improvement on a HD screen, but to be honest i'd stick with DVD's at the mo. The PS does a reasonable job of upscaling & DVD's are considerably cheaper. The extra features on Blu-Ray discs will only amuse you for a short time anyway.
Personally i'd say only go for Blu-Ray if you are a serious film addict, have sufficeint disposable cash & a large Plasma or LCD hooked to 7.1 surround.
Lastly, most Blu-Ray films won't be region free...
Blu-ray films are pretty expensive aswell , in my local Woolworths they were like £22 each film..

I'd go along with what Fick suggested, though I'd go further and add that a number of films will not be particularly worth the Blu-Ray treatment. There Will Be Blood is one film that will look far better and allow you to appreciate the brilliany cinematography, however something like The Shining would probably be no better experience regardless of the equipment you use.
Therefore as they are currently so much more expensive to buy, I'd not only worry about the technical requirements, but also the type of film. Currently, despite having a PS3 and 32" Samsung HDTV, I've not found a blu-ray I'm willing to purchase over the DVD.
I bought my father a blu ray title for his birthday, it was expensive, but I would only consider buying them on the regular (over DVD) if there were more titles and they were a bit cheaper, both of whch will happen in time.
Im sure theres some PS3 deals out there which allow you to purchase 2 blu ray films for free when you buy it. Saw that kind of thing in a few well known stores yesterday.

Yeah DVDs look pretty damn good on the PS3. Everything is nice and sharp.

The reason why the picture quality of DVDs look better on a PS3 is because the PS3 has a built-in Upscaling DVD Player.
Stand alone Upscaling DVD Players themselves are very hard to find and are more expensive than your Regular DVD Players.

Has anyone experienced 7.1 sound? I'm looking to purchase a 7.1 system if it's noticeably better than 5.1.
