View Full Version : What's the Hype All About?

I must be the only one that isn't really getting the hype for this game at all. I thought the hype surrounding the likes of Halo 3 was ridiculous but Grand Theft Auto IV seems to have taken the cake with hype.
I've looked on other forums with nearly most threads in the first page being related to Grand Theft Auto IV and people nearly getting sexual pleasures of finding out that the game has been leaked but for some reason, I'm just not really that excited for Grand Theft Auto IV.
I was anticipating San Andreas so much that when my pre-order never came on the day of release, I went to the shop and bought it anyway and selling the pre-ordered copy which came a week later but this time round I have barely looked for anything on GTAIV. I watched the debut trailer on their site when it was first released but that was it. Probably read a few other things here and there but haven't seen any other trailers (Apart from the one that has appeared on TV recently which I just kind of ignore).
I'm not saying the game will be crap and that I will avoid it. I will probably get it eventually but I'm in no rush to buy the game considering I have a shit load to complete but I just want to know if I'm the only one that isn't anticipating it (Apart for people that don't like games very much) and why you are looking forward to GTAIV so much.

To be honest, I'm not all that bothered about whether I get it on release date or not but will still probably play it a bit once it arrives. I tend to just roam about on GTA games then get bored and end up putting in some old school Pro Evo or another game I'm playing a lot at the time.

Man, this game is fantastic, I've always hated the GTA series, but this year Rockstar put together an amazing package, saw the final game at my friend's game store, Limited edition, which includes a bank style safe cage with keys and all, a rockstar handbag, a beautiful art book, a CD soundtrack and the game. This game looks and plays fantastic. Cant wait til Monday.

I've only ever played two games of the series, GTA and Vice City, and the latter I only borrowed for about a week. I enjoyed them, but PES/ISS and Champ Manager has always occupied most of my gaming time.
It's only recently I've decided to branch out to different genres.

Yeah! I knew Welsley Snipes has been avoiding his taxes for ages, why have they only just caught him now?

Is he in the game? :w00t
You're not the only one. I don't really think the GTA games are any good, I only tend to play sports games on my PS3*. Plus I wouldn't have time for GTA.
*Honourable exception goes to Portal, which is just so good it's like being Madonna in the video to Like a Virgin.
Worth a rent, but won't buy it unless it actually meets those silly 10/10 ratings.

Do you rent all games before buying, to make sure they meet their ratings?

I don't hate the GTA franchise. I was going shit crazy when San Andreas was being released but with GTAIV, I just completely forgot about it until like 2 weeks ago. I'm definitely getting the game.

Often leads to the best gaming experiences.
To be honest, I really can't wait till this game is released. PES6 is getting a bit boring now, only play it with my mate every now and then online and COD4 has quite an annoying community to be honest so that's getting tiresome. Really can't wait for such an enthralling single player game.

Took the words right out of my.. ahem.. fingers. They are literally the only two games I ever play too.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not fiending to play the game but I'm never really too hyped about any release as I'm not a huge gamer; but it should be quality.

The problem I have with the game is it becomes boring and repetitive very quickly. It's generally rather easy, it's story is usually quite basic and dull, the graphics are far too cartoony and it requires little to no skill. I like the idea, but I don't feel they've ever executed it particularly well. I'm not planning to get the game, I think the reviews it's got over the years are deluded and the amount of hype is unbelievable.

Have you tried The Getaway?

Have a look at it at least! It's clear from that post you've went nowhere near it and are judging it on the ps2 versions. The graphics are hugely improved. It's got a huge multiplayer option this time round to keep people entertained.

Actually I've looked at plenty of screenshots and a handful of trailers, my housemate may buy the game in which case I'll try it but nothing more. If you think the graphics are good then we must have oppossing tastes, they still look too cartoon-like. I also fail to have belief in the multiplayer, I can only see that falling on it's face if it's a mass-multiplayer.

I'm a fan of graphics in general yeah. I see a big difference though between old gta's and this. That pleases me, couldn't ask for more. They've improved them aswell as keeping that GTA style look.
Multiplayer seems solid just now though. I've read many reviews and seen it in action. definitely something to look out for.

Who isn't a fan of good graphics? It's just while they're better than previous installments (to be expected) I still don't think they're good.

I must say that seeing it in person, the graphics look pretty sweet on the 360 in my opinion. Far superior than older installments and if the usual game play and storyline is there then I expect to be kept busy for the coming weeks.
Graphics are a joy to behold.
The game is looking amazing right now :)
I've played it for about 4 hours straight i think. Had a few goes at the MP aswell. Its a whole new level for GTA! awesome :)

I just pre-ordered the 360 version earlier today and can go and collect it at midnight. My bro says he will come with us so I'll probably just do that.

Yes. I pre-ordered at Blockbusters and picked my copy of it at midnight. I have been playing since and right now almost 8.20 am is the first time I have stopped playing and I will continue to keep playing then go to work at 2pm. Online in this game is great. :D
Hmmm.
My local newspaper even had a piece on GTA
Of course, the words "ultra violent", 'brutal murders' and 'beating hookers' appeared in the piece. Apparently Australia and New Zealand are getting a stripped down version in terms of violence.

I picked up a copy while I was in town (for a fancy meal at McDonalds :erm:), surprised that they had any in I was expecting it to be sold out everywhere. I haven't played it yet but here's hoping it lives up to your expectations rather than my own.

I don't think you'll be disappointed my friend.
On-line looks like it could be a good laugh too if we can get a lot of us together.
Do you rent all games before buying, to make sure they meet their ratings?
No, not at all. But I do rent a fair few before buying them to see if I'll get my money's worth out of them as I can't be pissing away £40 left right and centre.

Played it for an hour, and while I think it's good I certainly wouldn't give it 10/10 so far, some interesting additions and I like the way the phone works but there's still a lot to be done. For example I go on one date with Michelle and then I'm free to drive off in her car?

Yeah I found that strange too, I expected to have to continue on foot after the date, and then I was left in her car to inevitably drive it away badly and cause some pretty bad damage to it.
Niko won't be getting any with that attitude.
Haha. Everyone gives in.
Ahem. I haven't. I have remained on my moral high ground, despite the stuff that's been written on here, I know the GTA series well enough, plus general common sense, to know that it's not worth getting. I find you all inferior to me...
...because they'd sold out at my local ASDA.
